Advisor: Dr. Sarika Chandra

Major: English

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Toward a Theory of Work: Personal Responsibility, Self-Regulation, and Identity in the Age of America’s Work Crisis examines how American culture grapples with work in the Postfordist era of production, particularly in the areas of ethnic, working-class, cultural, and literary studies. Specific to these areas are ideas of (personal) responsibility that take shape in concepts of self-regulation invented to function as both a direct and indirect redress …

A Critical Review Of Hardin's Tragedy Of The Commons (1968): A Case Study On The Segara Anakan Community, Cilacap, Central Java, Prihandoko Sanjatmiko

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper aims to provide a contribution to common property theory that has been developed since the 1960s by explaining the dynamics involved in the management of resources that are going through a transition; from being held “in common” to being privately owned or vice versa, through compromises made among the actors in the local legitimacy. This qualitative research was conducted in Ujung Alang and Klaces Villages, Kampung Laut Subdistrict, Cilacap Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The findings of this study indicate that landscape changes can cause changes in the agrarian structure, that is, changes in the ownership of resources as …

Antropologi Biologi Di Indonesia: Sebuah Penelusuran Dan Kemungkinan Pengembangan, Iman Fachruliansyah

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesia has a great diversity of ethnic groups, languages, physical characteristics, and human genetic structures. Various studies of human physical variation and their evolutionary history in the world have received substantial contributions from biological anthropology researches in Indonesia. However, biological anthropology studies in Indonesia are not established or less familiar even among Indonesian anthropology milieu. This condition is reflected in a small numbers of Indonesian biological anthropologists, despite the vision of the founders of Indonesian anthropology that programmed the development of biological anthropology as a part of the anthropology department. This article aims to review the history of biological anthropology …

Reactions Of Adult Listeners To Infant Speech-Like Vocalizations And Cry, Hyunjoo Yoo Jan 2018

Reactions Of Adult Listeners To Infant Speech-Like Vocalizations And Cry, Hyunjoo Yoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Caregiver-infant interaction is critical for cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. This dissertation investigated adult responses to infant speech-like (i.e., protophones) and distress vocalizations in three individual projects. Study1 investigated different timing of caregiver responses to protophones and cries. In order for caregivers to respond differently to protophones and cries, they need to be able to differentiate these sounds. Study 2 and Study 3 projects addressed this issue. Infant recordings from a longitudinal study were used for the dissertation. For Study 1 and 3, all-day LENA home recordings were used, and for Study 2, both LENA and laboratory recordings were …

Place, Identity, And Language Learning: The Transformative Role Of Place-Based English Language Instruction, Daniel Scott Harper Jan 2018

Place, Identity, And Language Learning: The Transformative Role Of Place-Based English Language Instruction, Daniel Scott Harper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the intersections of place and second language learning. Learner identity has been found to be an important construct in second language learning. In recent years, place and space have become central topics in the study of sociolinguistics and identity. One area of place and language that has not been studied in depth, however, is whether place plays a role in second language learning. This study begins to fill this gap by examining the second language learning experiences of thirteen Japanese study abroad students who were enrolled in an eight-week, content-based language course. The content of the course …

Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani Jan 2018

Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recently, it has become increasingly popular among Saudi students to study abroad. There are, for example, currently 58,726 Saudi students studying at the university level in the United States. During their study abroad (SA) journey, when they wish to say something to someone, they need to determine the situationally-appropriate utterances: What can be said, to whom, where, when, and how. From the interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) perspective, the SA context is assumed to provide more opportunities to communicate with native speakers, and these opportunities are believed to lead to pragmatic gains (Kinginger, 2008, 2009).Guided by five research questions, this study investigated …

Contribution Of Inbred Singletons To Variance Component Estimation Of Heritability And Linkage, Lucy Blondell, August N. Blackburn, Mark Kos, John Blangero, Harald Hh Goring Jan 2018

Contribution Of Inbred Singletons To Variance Component Estimation Of Heritability And Linkage, Lucy Blondell, August N. Blackburn, Mark Kos, John Blangero, Harald Hh Goring

School of Medicine Publications

Objectives:

An interesting consequence of consanguinity is that the inbred singleton becomes informative for genetic variance. We determine the contribution of an inbred singleton to variance component analysis of heritability and linkage.

Methods:

Statistical theory for the power of variance component analysis of quantitative traits is used to determine the expected contribution of an inbred singleton to likelihood-ratio tests of heritability and linkage.

Results:

In variance component models an inbred singleton contributes relatively little to a test of heritability, but can contribute substantively to a test of linkage. For small to moderate QTL effects and a level of inbreeding comparable …

Mental Health Literacy: The Knowledge Of Mental Health Literacy And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes And Non-Athletes, Danielle E. Schuck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Context: By the age of 24 years, diagnosable mental disorders begin to develop in one out of four Americans (Kaier et al., 2015). Young people also have deficits in knowledge about mental health literacy. This deficiency is one reason why individuals lack the ability to recognize mental illness and the appropriate measures needed to take to seek professional help (Kelly et al., 2007). This study investigates the mental health literacy and help-seeking attitudes of NCAA Division I student-athletes and non-athletes. Objective: Investigate the knowledge of mental health literacy and help-seeking attitudes of collegiate student-athletes and non-athletes. Design: Non-experimental, correlation and …

Becoming A Decolonial Feminist Ethnographer: Addressing The Complexities Of Positionality And Representation, Jennifer Manning Jan 2018

Becoming A Decolonial Feminist Ethnographer: Addressing The Complexities Of Positionality And Representation, Jennifer Manning

Articles

Abstract Organisation and management scholars are often preoccupied with developing, refining and advancing knowledge, and in so doing, the empirical process through which knowledge is advanced can be ignored together with the impact this process can have on participants and scholars. This article draws attention to how management scholars might negotiate the complexities of positionality and representation through an illustrative case: my experience of becoming a decolonial feminist ethnographer. Drawing upon my doctoral research, I share the experience of my ethnographic journey to become a decolonial feminist ethnographer. Developing a decolonial feminist approach to ethnography enabled me to identify positionality …

Risk Governance In Metro Manila: De-Politicising State-Civil Society Relations In Crafting Housing Resilience For/With The Poor, Emma E. Porio Jan 2018

Risk Governance In Metro Manila: De-Politicising State-Civil Society Relations In Crafting Housing Resilience For/With The Poor, Emma E. Porio

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

The 1990s decentralization and democratization movements saw the rise of civil society engagements with the state in crafting/implementing its social reform agenda. Partnership with civil society was the key in making urban governance an effective foil for the rising informality in Metro Manila and other rapidly urbanizing areas (Karaos 2018; Porio 1997, 2004). But the increasing climate disasters (e.g., Ketsana 2009, Haiyan 2013) that inundated millions of urban-rural poor had led to shifting spaces of power (Porio 2012) in state-civil society engagements, revealing the complexities of urban governance in the era of climate disasters and heightened state-capital partnerships. Mayors, for …

Public Health Implications Of Metal Ash Concentrations From Prescribed Burns: A Study Of Open Jarrah Forests, John Edwards Jan 2018

Public Health Implications Of Metal Ash Concentrations From Prescribed Burns: A Study Of Open Jarrah Forests, John Edwards

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Ash is not a homogenous product. It is the solid residue of combustion and contains a complex mixture of chemical products. The fire that produces ash is non-discriminatory in that it will burn anything that is combustible. The ash residue resulting from fires varies and is dependent on its source, and burn characteristics such as the temperature of the fire. Ash comprises particles of carbon, soot and trace elements. Ash presents public health risk to people and communities, through direct and indirect ingestion, inhalation and absorption. The health effects of ash exposure are not limited to symptoms affecting the eyes, …

The Photographic Other: Paradox In The Cathexis Of Longing, Alex Cilla Bradley Jan 2018

The Photographic Other: Paradox In The Cathexis Of Longing, Alex Cilla Bradley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A photographic and written examination of paradox in relation to the photograph

This research aims to illuminate the relationship between paradox and photography, elaborated via Julia Kristeva’s notion of the abject. Paradox is considered in relation to photography in terms of repeated and unresolved debates about the status of the photograph as either an ‘index of reality’ (Bate, 2004, p. 1) or as a sign. The significance of this research lies in its re-motivation of abjection in terms of paradox, not in order to resolve such debates but, rather, to illuminate the importance of such unresolved contradictions in terms of …

Rogue: A Novel - And - Wonderlust: The Value Of Wonder For Readers, Writers, And The Vault: A Critical Essay, Amanda Betts Jan 2018

Rogue: A Novel - And - Wonderlust: The Value Of Wonder For Readers, Writers, And The Vault: A Critical Essay, Amanda Betts

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis consists of an original novel, Rogue, and an exegesis titled Wonderlust: the value of wonder for readers, writers, and The Vault.

Rogue is the second novel of the series titled The Vault, which is a speculative fiction duology for young adults (thirteen and above) with the possibility for crossover into adult readership. Rogue picks up the story of fifteen-year-old Hayley who, after choosing to leave her previous home of an underwater seed vault, finds herself washed onto the cliffs of Maria Island, off the coast of Tasmania. As Hayley ventures further into the terrestrial ‘real world’ …

Remnants Of Us: Collective Dance-Making As Multi-Art Form Praxis, Lucinda Coleman

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Australian dance theatre collective, Remnant Dance, was established with a vision to ‘create, make, connect’ through artistic practice and performances. Remnant Dancers have generated unexpected social networking and community development whilst exploring connectivity through dance in the collective environment. In particular, during 2015/2016, Remnant Dance ventured into ambitious creative territory by inviting 22 artists from the fields of music, contemporary dance, and visual/multi-media arts to collaborate in response to fragments of literary texts, matched with wines. The project, winery psalms–the mixed half-dozen, generated six short, multi-art form pieces which were installed/performed on site at a winery, inviting audiences to …

Deliberate Communication With Pictures: A Science Fiction?, Stuart Medley Jan 2018

Deliberate Communication With Pictures: A Science Fiction?, Stuart Medley

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There are assumptions about images and how these compare with words, in terms of what is afforded us in communicating with each other. These assumptions have been limited by religion and economic imperatives in the past, and by education systems that grew out of those vested interests. One way to push past these assumptions might be to imagine a world without writing. Some science fiction examples are examined for their feasibility. In addition, the reader is reminded of humanity’s pre-writing past, and that pictures that survived from then are viewed through our present contextual lenses as containing a child-like view …

Forest Type Influences Population Densities Of Nocturnal Lemurs In Manompana, Northeastern Madagascar, Alex Miller, Harriet R. Mills, Tantely Ralantoharijaona, Nicole A. Volasoa, Chantal Misandeau, Lounès Chikhi, Roberta Bencini, Jordi Salmona Jan 2018

Forest Type Influences Population Densities Of Nocturnal Lemurs In Manompana, Northeastern Madagascar, Alex Miller, Harriet R. Mills, Tantely Ralantoharijaona, Nicole A. Volasoa, Chantal Misandeau, Lounès Chikhi, Roberta Bencini, Jordi Salmona

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Forest loss, fragmentation, and anthropization threaten the survival of forest species all over the world. Shifting agriculture is one of these threatening processes in Madagascar. However, when its cycle is halted and the land is left to regenerate, the resulting growth of secondary forest may provide a viable habitat for folivorous and omnivorous lemur species. We aimed to identify the response of nocturnal lemurs to different successional stages of regenerating secondary, degraded mature, and mature forest across a mosaic-type landscape. We surveyed four nocturnal lemur species (Avahi laniger, Microcebus cf. simmonsi, Allocebus trichotis, and Daubentonia madagascariensis) in four forest types …

On Elemental Phenomenology: Sallis And Dzogchen Buddhism, Schwartz, Michael Jan 2018

On Elemental Phenomenology: Sallis And Dzogchen Buddhism, Schwartz, Michael

Journal of Conscious Evolution

John Sallis’ volumes on the Force of the Imagination (2000) and Logic of the Imagination (2012) constitute, in the field of contemporary Continental thought, a novel philosophical view of the elementals. Tibetan Buddhism has a more than a thousand-year old tradition of teaching about and practicing with the elements. This study is a preliminary exploration of the cross-currents of these two elemental teachings.

Improve Organizational Commitment By Leading Like A Therapist, Anna A. Gibson Jan 2018

Improve Organizational Commitment By Leading Like A Therapist, Anna A. Gibson

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

The 21st-century workplace underemphasizes the importance of relational leadership, at the expense of the bottom line. Although there is a plethora of both popular and academic literature on the importance of good leadership in the workplace, relational leadership techniques have been misunderstood and underutilized. Dynamic psychology theories that emphasize the importance of relationships—such as self psychology—can be used to produce organizational results.

Excavating Race-Based Disadvantage Among Class-Privileged People Of Color, Khiara Bridges Jan 2018

Excavating Race-Based Disadvantage Among Class-Privileged People Of Color, Khiara Bridges

Faculty Scholarship

The aim of this article is to begin to theorize the fraught space within which class-privileged racial minorities exist — the disadvantage within their privilege. The article posits that the invisibility of the racial subordination of wealthier people of color (that is, their marginalization on account of their race) is fertile soil for the germination of post-racialism — the sense that we, as a nation, have overcome our racial problems. The dramatic visibility of the minority poor’s suffering, combined with the relative invisibility of the suffering of those minorities who are not poor, breeds the belief that class is now …

Naming Brazil's Previously Poor: “New Middle Class” As An Economic, Political, And Experiential Category, Charles H. Klein, Sean T. Mitchell, Benjamin Junge Jan 2018

Naming Brazil's Previously Poor: “New Middle Class” As An Economic, Political, And Experiential Category, Charles H. Klein, Sean T. Mitchell, Benjamin Junge

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The early years of the 21st century were historic for socioeconomic relations in Brazil. While long known for stark socioeconomic inequality, the nation became internationally celebrated for its economic growth and successful poverty-reduction initiatives, which together propelled some 35 million “previously poor” Brazilians into what became called a “new middle class.” The apparent rise of this “new” class has generated contentious debates and a range of social science studies in Brazil; yet this literature is little known in the Anglophone academic world. While some have interpreted this demographic transformation as an expansion of the existing middle class, others have questioned …

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis Facilitates Evolutionary Models Of Culture Change, Cameron M. Smith, Liane Gabora, William Gardner-O’Kearney

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) is beginning to fulfill the whole promise of Darwinian insight through its extension of evolutionary understanding from the biological domain to include cultural information evolution. Several decades of important foundation-laying work took a social Darwinist approach and exhibited ecologically-deterministic elements. This is not the case for more recent developments to the evolutionary study of culture, which emphasize non-Darwinian processes such as self-organization, potentiality, and epigenetic change.
