The Evolution Of Architecture Faculty Organizational Culture At The University Of Michigan, Linda Mills Jan 2018

The Evolution Of Architecture Faculty Organizational Culture At The University Of Michigan, Linda Mills

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding and navigating the multiple academic disciplines and administrative subcultures, which operate within higher education institutions, is challenging for both internal and external stakeholders who may be unfamiliar with the disparate normative, regulative, and cultural cognitive systems that guide social behavior of each area. Higher education leaders need to understand the cultures operating within the organizational groups and subgroups in order to coordinate, integrate, and foster collaboration toward organizational and institutional goal attainment activities. This case study, which focused on the emergence and evolution of the organizational culture of the architecture faculty at the University of Michigan, provides insights into …

Between Biography And History: Domestic Workers In Contemporary Brazil, Mary Garcia Castro, Maria Das Graças Neves De Souza, João Victor Marques Da Silva

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

This work accesses Chaney and Castro’s (1989) publication about domestic service in Latin America in the 1980-90s as a reference to focus on Brazil’s case. In the period of 1990-2015 there is a highlight on the changes and permanencies in distinct dimensions, such as: analytic marks about paid domestic labor, especially recent contributions about the tie between class and recognition perspectives, and the focus on the intersectionality between race and gender in the class. This article explores life conditions in that period, highlighting advances, especially between 2004-2014. These have been associated with positive, yet incomplete changes in formal job opportunities, …

Dating The Departure Of Lehi From Jerusalem, Jeffrey R. Chadwick Jan 2018

Dating The Departure Of Lehi From Jerusalem, Jeffrey R. Chadwick

BYU Studies

Most Latter-day Saints would agree that the prophet Lehi and his family left their home in Jerusalem and departed into the wilderness in the year 600 BC. This is largely due to the presence of an asterisk in 1 Nephi 2:4, present in every official edition of the Book of Mormon from 1920 to 2012, which alerts readers to a “600 BC” chronological notation at the bottom of the page. However, a number of studies over the last forty years have suggested that 600 BC cannot have been the correct date of Lehi’s departure, preferring later dates anywhere from 597 …

An Egyptian Linguistic Component In Book Of Mormon Names, Eve Koller Jan 2018

An Egyptian Linguistic Component In Book Of Mormon Names, Eve Koller

BYU Studies

In February 2012, while studying the Book of Mormon, I searched in the index of the Triple Combination to clarify the identity of an individual. I came across names starting with “Z” and noticed a pattern—Zenephi, Zenos, Zenock. They looked as though they were composed of scriptural names (Nephi, Enos, Enoch, and so forth) with different forms of a z- prefix that might mean “son of ” or “descendant of.” Later, I noticed the name Cezoram and wondered if it was part of the same pattern, with a variation of the …

Help (Not) Wanted: Neo-Liberal Discourses Of Leadership Against Community Knowledge And Control In Comparative Context, Alice Lesnick, Hannah Bahn

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article compares two neo-liberal education reform activities that are not often studied in tandem: alternative teacher certification in the USA, as explored through Teach for America, and the growing international service learning movement. Guided by the Movement for Black Lives’ call for a world where those “most impacted in our communities control the laws, institutions, and policies that are meant to serve us,” the authors explore the ways in which programs’ neo-liberal justifications obscure the authority, history, and agency of the communities they purport to serve, while convincing people outside of the community that those within are benefitted. The …

Archaeological Investigations At The Old Manse, 2016-2017, Concord, Massachusetts, Alexandra Crowder, John M. Steinberg, Brian N. Damiata, Christa M. Beranek

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

Two phases of archaeological investigations were conducted at the Old Manse in Concord, MA, in advance of a proposed visitor center and other construction activity at the property. In 2016, a geophysical survey was carried out over the parking lot and in the area east of the historic barn location. Although subsequent test excavations had been proposed for the same areas, these were not carried out because the construction project was put on hold. In 2017, five shovel test pits and one excavation unit were excavated in an area west of the current garden in an area that was proposed …

#I🔫U: Considering The Context Of Online Threats, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky, Linda Riedemann Norbutt Jan 2018

#I🔫U: Considering The Context Of Online Threats, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky, Linda Riedemann Norbutt

UF Law Faculty Publications

The United States Supreme Court has failed to grapple with the unique interpretive difficulties presented by social media threats cases. Social media make hateful and threatening speech more common but also magnify the potential for a speaker's innocent words to be misunderstood People speak differently on different social media platforms, and architectural features of platforms, such as character limits, affect the meaning of speech. The same is true of other contextual clues unique to social media, such as gifs, hashtags, and emojis. Only by understanding social media contexts can legal decision-makers avoid overcriminalization of speech protected by the First Amendment. …

Respect The Land - It’S Like Part Of Us: A Traditional Use Study Of Inland Dena’Ina Ties To The Chulitna River & Sixmile Lake Basins, Lake Clark National Park And Preserve, Douglas Deur, Karen Evanoff, Jamie Hebert

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

For countless generations, Lake Clark has been home to the inland Dena’ina people. This unique and vast fresh-water lake complex sits at the intersection of sprawling tundra, taiga, and jagged cordillera, dotted with villages. Here, village life has been sustained by herds of caribou, shorelines populated by moose and beaver, vast runs of salmon ascending from Bristol Bay, and other natural assets. But the area’s uniqueness extends beyond its abundant natural resources. Also unique is the National Park Service (NPS) unit that has occupied the region known as Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) in recent decades.

The study …

A Filemaker Pro Database For Use In The Recording Of Commingled And/Or Fragmentary Human Remains, Anna J. Osterholtz

CAS Publications

Commingled and fragmentary remains are found in numerous contexts worldwide. These assemblages typically require large scale, long term study to fully extract and contextualize meaningful data. However, when uncovered in CRM and foreign settings where remains cannot leave their country of origin, there is a need for quick, reliable data collection. Presented here is a recording system for use in field- and research-based laboratory settings. Utilizing visual forms and a minimal set of observations for skeletal elements from the cranium to the foot, the database facilitates data collection of fragment identification, age at death and sex estimation, dental observations, trauma …

Thus, the shift to legalization may be accompanied by environmental and landuse implications. Investigating commercial-scale marijuana cultivation, this Article details how, in some ways, legalization can reduce environmental impacts of marijuana cultivation while also examining tricky issues regarding tensions between protected lands and marijuana cultivation. The Changing Tides Of Adoption: Why Marriage, Race, And Family Identity Still Matter, Jessica Dixon Weaver Jan 2018

The Changing Tides Of Adoption: Why Marriage, Race, And Family Identity Still Matter, Jessica Dixon Weaver

SMU Law Review

This essay expounds on the shifting motivation for adoption in the United States using a critical race feminist theory lens to explore how adoption remains wedded to marriage, the control of wealth, and family identity. These three elements have been historically and legally tied to race in that the law was intentionally written to exclude certain persons of color from being able to access marriage or wealth, thereby diminishing their ability to establish family identity.

This essay proceeds in three parts. Part II sets forth an overview of the evolution of adoption by exploring the breakdown of formal adoption and …

Eating In The Archives? A Review Of Archival Outreach And Engagement Through Food History, Kara Flynn

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

For decades now, archivists have been working to make archival spaces more approachable and accessible, especially through archival outreach endeavors. Utilizing food history as archival outreach is a growing trend among archival institutions, as evidenced by the increasing numbers of events, exhibits, and online resources being offered. Food history provides the opportunity to build archival outreach and engagement opportunities by utilizing materials often already in archival collections. These materials open up dialogue and engagement with community members about something they are familiar with, even if they have never stepped foot in the archives. This article will review archival outreach events, …

Coffee, Please?: Sociolinguistic Influences On Politeness Strategies In Making Requests, Amy Burbee

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

In this paper I look at the extent to which factors of gender and context influence linguistic features such as hedging and syntax in indirect requests. I analyzed different features of indirect speech used by participants. I selected a few scenarios that focused on different social aspects where requests would be needed. Responses from men and women were compared to see if the gender of the speaker had any effect on the linguistic features used.
