The Poet In Mourning: Jeffers After Una, Robert Zaller Jan 2018

The Poet In Mourning: Jeffers After Una, Robert Zaller

Jeffers Studies

This article explores the impact of Jeffers’ wife Una’s death on the work he completed between the date of her passing, 1 September 1950, and his own death in 1962. First, the history of Jeffers and Una’s relationship is recounted, including the important role Una played in shaping her husband’s public image. The article then turns to Jeffers’ late, post–1950 career, beginning with a prolonged period of grief-induced writer’s block. When Jeffers regained his ability to write verse, it was chiefly through the composition of “Hungerfield,” a distinctive mid-length narrative poem that bears the hallmarks of Jeffers’ earlier successful narratives …

The Effect Of Perceived Risk In Predicting Gift Purchase Intention / Liew Cheng Siang, Cheng Siang Liew Jan 2018

The Effect Of Perceived Risk In Predicting Gift Purchase Intention / Liew Cheng Siang, Cheng Siang Liew

Student Works (2010-2019)

Purchasing a gift could be an extremely stressful task. In the purchase trajectory, the gift-giver not only needs to carefully select the gift but also has to ensure that the gift would evoke positive emotions. This stress could increase considerably if the recipient is a loved one. While there are several reasons for engaging in the gift-giving ‘ritual’, one fundamental reason is its potential to strengthen relationship ties between the giver and receiver. Research on gift-giving has long been conducted in disciplines such as anthropology, psychology and economics; marketing has also weighed into the research more recently due to the …

The Impact Of Humor On Stress Responses During A Listening Span Task, Cynthia L. Stanley Jan 2018

The Impact Of Humor On Stress Responses During A Listening Span Task, Cynthia L. Stanley

Theses

The current experiment examined how humor influences the effects of stress induced by mental workload. Participants completed a Modified Listening Span task (MLS) that was chosen to induce mental workload and measure working memory capacity. Participants also viewed a series of neutral and positive images, one of three videos, completed a workload measure before and after the MLS, and pulse wave amplitude readings were collected throughout the experiment. Participants reported higher workload ratings following completion of the MLS, demonstrating an increased mental workload. Subjective stress ratings and PWA readings were higher following the completion of the MLS, illustrating an increase …

The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman Jan 2018

The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William Dale Schroeder Jan 2018

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William Dale Schroeder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. This is problematic because ideology is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Archaeology’s preoccupation for over 100 years has been the systematic location, identification, and excavation of discrete artifacts; features, and sites; interpreting meanings from comparative studies and data sets; and putting the past in order all while documenting change over time. Historical archaeologist Mark P. Leone identified fences, the Plat of the ideal City of Zion, …

Needs Assessment Of Santa María Zoogochi, Oaxaca, Mexico: Every Day Violence, Inequities In Health Care, And Knowledge Creation/Distribution, Natasha S. O'Loughlin

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this research was to conduct a needs assessment of a remote indigenous community, Santa María Zoogochi, Oaxaca, Mexico. The focus of the needs assessment was on the community’s concerns and suggested solutions to problems they identified. The focus on general community concerns allowed participants to identify immediate needs they found of importance. This research was conducted using the Concerns Report Method (CRM), which is a strategy associated with Participatory Action Research (PAR). This method facilitated community conversations and engaged the community in the research process by incorporating their concerns and potential solutions into a community plan of …

Framings Of Nature In Planet Earth Ii And Wild Safari Live, Joshua Gross Jan 2018

Framings Of Nature In Planet Earth Ii And Wild Safari Live, Joshua Gross

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The percentage of the world’s population living in cities continues to grow, while media technologies become ever more ubiquitous. As a result, the mass media’s role in connecting the general public to the natural world will only increase; the wildlife genre of television may have a particularly large role to play in this regard. Unfortunately, previous authors have argued that the over-dramatized depictions of nature in mainstream wildlife programs may serve to disconnect viewers from the natural world. Scholarship has also not kept up with recent developments in wildlife television, with few authors writing about hugely successful programs like Planet …

Name As Key-Word, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2018

Name As Key-Word, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter Foundation Books

During his famous conversation with Kuki Shūzō, German philosopher Martin Heidegger playfully2 connected the name of Hermes, the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, to the etymology of “hermeneutics,” the formal study of interpretation. In contrast to ancient oracles who acted as simple mouthpieces, announcing divine words verbatim, Hermes took upon himself the additional role of interpreter, commenting on the meaning of the messages in ways that would allow perceptive hearers to act productively.3 Continuing Heidegger’s wordplay,4 Hans-Georg Gadamer elaborated the thinking of his mentor about the role of Hermes:5

“A Promise To Support Us:” Undocumented Experiences On A Sanctuary Campus, Elaine Allard, Jonathan Hamel Sellman , '19, Brandon Torres , '18, Sydnie Schwarz , '20, Freddy Bernardino , '18, Rebecca Castillo , '20

Educational Studies Faculty Works

This exploratory study examines the experiences of undocumented students at Hawthorne College, an elite, liberal arts institution with sanctuary status. Drawing primarily on a questionnaire and qualitative interviews, it considers 1) whether undocumented and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students on a sanctuary campus experience the characteristic psychosocial difficulties that mark the lives of undocumented students elsewhere and 2) the extent to which institutional policies mitigate these challenges. The research reveals that sanctuary is neither a panacea for undocumented students’ concerns nor is it a meaningless symbol. Students are protected from some typical barriers to college success, experience other …

Where Have All The Falcons Gone? Saker Falcon (Falco Cherrug) Exports In A Global Economy, Paul B. Stretesky, Ruth E. Mckie, Michael J. Lynch, Michael A. Long, Kimberly L. Barrett

Criminology Faculty Publications

Within conservation biology growing evidence of the decline of the Saker falcon (falco cherrug) population has directed attention to the role of the global falcon trade. Here, we examine factors that may explain the global Saker trade using ecological modernization, treadmill of production and unequal ecological exchange as theoretical frameworks. We estimate trends in Saker exports using the most comprehensive measure available – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Trade Database. Our analysis employs fixed effects regression techniques to control for unobserved heterogeneity between nations to isolate the most important drivers of …

Community and Family Health Faculty Publications

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection and causes most oropharyngeal (e.g., throat) and anogenital (e.g., anal, cervical) cancers. Research indicates low knowledge about the link between HPV and cancer among the general population, and similar low knowledge of HPV among individuals diagnosed with HPV-associated cancers. This is important because HPV status can have implications for treatment, prognosis, and future sexual decisions. Using a health literacy framework, this study explored how patients diagnosed with HPV-associated cancers accessed, understood, appraised, and applied HPV information. We conducted 27 in-depth interviews with patients seeking care at a comprehensive cancer center; and …

Notes On The Neutered Mother, Or Toward A Queer Socialist Matriarchy, Teemu Ruskola Jan 2018

Notes On The Neutered Mother, Or Toward A Queer Socialist Matriarchy, Teemu Ruskola

Emory Law Journal

This tribute to Martha Fineman focuses on a key work that, to me, occupies one of the highest points in the intellectual arc of her career, namely her pathbreaking 1995 book, The Neutered Mother, the Sexual Family and Other Twentieth Century Tragedies. Below, I read it from the perspective of queer theory. I first consider its unqualified demand for the abolition of marriage, and then turn to its commitment to refocusing family law on the figure of the Mother¿a predecessor of the vulnerable subject, a theoretical construct that has come to dominate Fineman¿s more recent work.

Opportunity Makes A Thief: Corporate Opportunities As Legal Transplant And Convergence In Corporate Law, Martin Gelter, Geneviève Helleringer Jan 2018

Opportunity Makes A Thief: Corporate Opportunities As Legal Transplant And Convergence In Corporate Law, Martin Gelter, Geneviève Helleringer

Faculty Scholarship

The paper surveys the corporate opportunities doctrine in four jurisdictions: the US, the UK, Germany, and France. Our analysis enables us to trace the development of the doctrine, exposing the way in which certain models of dealing with a particular issue have arisen, and how these models have then spread. Fiduciary duties are often today held out as typical instruments of shareholder protection in the US and the UK, both of which are often held out as model jurisdictions in corporate governance internationally. However, fiduciary duties in these two jurisdictions often operate in strikingly different ways. While the US relies …

Emerging Care Regimes: An Analysis Of The Domestic Labor Market Of Shanghai, Nellie S. Lavalle Jan 2018

Emerging Care Regimes: An Analysis Of The Domestic Labor Market Of Shanghai, Nellie S. Lavalle

Honors Theses

The People’s Republic of China today faces a rapidly growing demand for care. Care consists of childcare, eldercare, and various domestic duties. Due to the increased pressures for dual-earner families and the aging population, there has emerged a significant deficit between the amount of care needed and the care available. In recent years, private employee-based enterprises have risen to a prominent position in the system of care provision. The phenomenon leads to questions of how states structure care provision. This paper seeks to answer two questions. First, what care-regime model has arisen in Shanghai to meet the demands of the …

What The Walls Say: Finding Meaning And Value In Tel Aviv’S Street Art, Rachel R. Bird Jan 2018

What The Walls Say: Finding Meaning And Value In Tel Aviv’S Street Art, Rachel R. Bird

Honors Theses

This thesis explores street art in Tel Aviv, Israel through anthropological concepts of value. By defining street art as an interstitial practice—one that exists between permeable, socially defined boundaries and is characterized differently by different power structures—I attempt to define some of the different regimes of value that apply to street art. Using the emerging market of “street art tours” as a fieldwork site, I look at how street art is presented and re-presented to both tourists and locals. By situating my research in a historical and geographic context, I hope to understand the ways different value schema, from economic …

Drawing Borders: Images, Representation, And (In)Visibility Of Migrants On The Balkan Route, Nora Hill Jan 2018

Drawing Borders: Images, Representation, And (In)Visibility Of Migrants On The Balkan Route, Nora Hill

Honors Theses

This honors thesis in Global Studies explores issues of (in)visibility and representation of migrants travelling along the Balkan Route to Western Europe from 2015-2018 through visual analysis of the images of migrants and borders found in news media, social media posts, art galleries, and on the cell phones of migrants and activists. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Belgrade, Serbia, one of the key nodes of the Route, as well as online archival research, I examine key differences in the ways migrants are represented and examine the power relations that are represented and reinforced through these images. My research is rooted …
