The Right To Education: An Analysis Through The Lens Of The Deontological Method Of Immanuel Kant, Kavana Ramaswamy Jan 2018

The Right To Education: An Analysis Through The Lens Of The Deontological Method Of Immanuel Kant, Kavana Ramaswamy

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

The framework of categorical imperatives is one of the most famous deontological theories of rights that have been formulated. The framework has often been used to justify human rights policies all over the world. While they have been subject to several criticisms over the last two centuries, some of these include improvements to the original framework. This paper analyses the framework of the categorical imperatives and suggest certain modifications to improve internal coherence.

The paper then seeks to apply this framework to the right to education, a right that is under fire in the conservatively-charged political arena today. This is …

A Study Of The Relationships Among The Transformational Leadership Practices Of The Michigan High School Principal, School Culture, And Student Achievement, Delores Michelle Starks Jan 2018

A Study Of The Relationships Among The Transformational Leadership Practices Of The Michigan High School Principal, School Culture, And Student Achievement, Delores Michelle Starks

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The continuing demand for greater accountability and improved student performance are critical concerns facing education in the 21st century. Federal and state mandates have been issued to ensure that all students achieve mastery of curriculum objectives. This quantitative study examined the relationships among student achievement as measured by the overall student proficiency in science on the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) Test and teacher perceptions of transformational leadership practices of Michigan high school principals and school culture. A correlational research design was used for this study. A total of 157 teachers, representing 147 unique high schools completed an …

The Archaeology Of Native American Persistence At Mission San José, Lee M. Panich, Rebecca Allen, Andrew Galvan Jan 2018

The Archaeology Of Native American Persistence At Mission San José, Lee M. Panich, Rebecca Allen, Andrew Galvan

Faculty Publications

Archaeological investigations at Mission San José in Fremont, California, have revealed large areas of the mission landscape, including portions of two adobe dwellings in the mission’s Native American neighborhood. Preliminary synthesis of previous and ongoing research at Mission San José focuses on the implications of archaeological evidence for understanding the persistence of indigenous cultural practices under missionization. Materials considered include flaked stone artifacts, shell and glass beads, modified ceramic disks, and faunal and floral remains. Our findings suggest that native people rearticulated various practices within the mission, but did so in ways that were consistent with existing traditions and cultural …

Perturbations Observed In The Orbital Elements Of The Spectroscopic Binary 57 Cygni, Kenneth W. Mclaughlin, Janak Panthi Jan 2018

Perturbations Observed In The Orbital Elements Of The Spectroscopic Binary 57 Cygni, Kenneth W. Mclaughlin, Janak Panthi

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We present spectroscopy that confirms periodic Doppler-shifts along with photometry that reinforces a lack of eclipsing in the double-lined spectroscopic binary 57 Cygni. Our spectroscopy concentrates on a range encompassing H-alpha and the helium 667.8 nm line, where we find Doppler-shifts of both stars resolved in the helium line but less so in the broader H-alpha profile. Although we find the radial velocities derived from both lines reasonably consistent, we retained only the helium-line derived velocities for sinusoidal curve-fits to the orbital dependence. The fit-amplitudes specify the ratio of the stellar masses as 1.03 ± 0.05, in agreement with previous …

Case Study: Hearing The Collective Student Voice In Online Courses, Caroline Mcgowan Jan 2018

Case Study: Hearing The Collective Student Voice In Online Courses, Caroline Mcgowan

Technical Communication Capstone Course

This paper argues for gathering the collective student voice in the online classroom. Combined with the observations of an impartial student (one not working for a grade), this non-evaluative formative assessment could be used to improve online teaching and learning. With the continued growth of online education, including entire programs, student voice programs should also be used in online classrooms. This paper outlines a two-part methodology for gathering the collective student voice in face-to-face classrooms and how it was modified for use in online classrooms. The online methodology includes a checklist (included in the appendix) and an individual electronic questionnaire. …

Kinship, Ellen Block Jan 2018

Kinship, Ellen Block

Sociology Faculty Publications

Kinship is a term used broadly in the social sciences, particularly in anthropology, to mean the web of social relationships that make up families. It is a useful framework for thinking about changes over the life span because people’s roles within their families and social networks change as they age and as the social, political, and economic contexts in which they live shift. There are three main concepts that help to explain the importance of kinship across the life span: Kinship is created through practice, kinship is processual, and kinship is inherently flexible. This entry provides a brief history of …

Librarians In The Lead: A Case For Interdisciplinary Faculty Collaboration On Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis Jan 2018

Librarians In The Lead: A Case For Interdisciplinary Faculty Collaboration On Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Assignment design provides a potential niche for librarians to fill in improving research assignments and in providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration on teaching, but this can be difficult work to claim as librarians. In the 2016-2017 academic year, a team of three librarians at Utah State University, a mid-size research university, piloted an assignment design workshop for faculty. Based on a model developed by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), our workshop’s core component was a structured, librarian-facilitated small group discussion among three to four faculty members from a range of academic departments. Interdisciplinary conversation about teaching research …

"Traditioning" Blackness: A Theo-Ethical Analysis Of Black Identity In Black Theological Discourse, Ben Sanders Iii Jan 2018

"Traditioning" Blackness: A Theo-Ethical Analysis Of Black Identity In Black Theological Discourse, Ben Sanders Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of James Cone's black liberation theology in the late-1960s and early 1970s marked both a radical challenge to and a historical transformation of the fields of religious and theological studies. Building on Cone's work, black theological discourse has developed a rich tradition of religious and academic inquiry characterized by its commitment to interpreting Christianity in particular, and religious experience more broadly, from the vantage point of oppressed black people. This dissertation shows that James Cone developed a particular understanding of black identity in his early works and, furthermore, that various scholars have critically engaged this conception of black …

Race And The Society For Historical Archaeology: Steps Toward Claiming An Anti-Racist Institutional Identity, Michael Nassaney Jan 2018

Race And The Society For Historical Archaeology: Steps Toward Claiming An Anti-Racist Institutional Identity, Michael Nassaney

Diversity Learning Communities

Background:

Archaeologists, as social scientists and humanists, are well aware of the ways in which our personal and political lives influence our practice and vice versa. Since the 1980s archaeologists have paid increasing attention to the rationalization of the past and how white privilege, white supremacy, and racial hierarchy structured the material world. Yet less attention has been paid to how these conditions structure our practice. Since the discipline remains predominantly white, it follows that our practice supports and reproduces values, attitudes, conditions, and worldviews that privilege whiteness. If this compromises our discipline and makes us intellectually and emotionally …

From Icon Of Empire To National Emblem: New Evidence For The Fallow Deer Of Barbuda, Sophia Perdikaris, Allison Bain, Sandrine Grouard, Karis Baker, Edith Gonzalez, A. Rus Hoelzel, Holly Miller, Reaksha Persaud, Naomi Sykes Jan 2018

From Icon Of Empire To National Emblem: New Evidence For The Fallow Deer Of Barbuda, Sophia Perdikaris, Allison Bain, Sandrine Grouard, Karis Baker, Edith Gonzalez, A. Rus Hoelzel, Holly Miller, Reaksha Persaud, Naomi Sykes

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Barbuda and Antigua’s national animal is the fallow deer, Dama dama dama, a species native to the eastern Mediterranean that has been transported around the world by people during the last 8000 years. The timing and circumstances by which fallow deer came to be established on Barbuda are currently uncertain but, by examining documentary, osteological and genetic evidence, this paper will consider the validity of existing theories. It will review the dynamics of human–Dama relationships from the 1500s AD to the present day and consider how the meaning attached to this species has changed through time: from a …

Reflections Of A “Pitiyanqui”: My History With Latcrit, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 2018

Reflections Of A “Pitiyanqui”: My History With Latcrit, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

One of our longtime LatCrit leaders in progressive and emancipatory pedagogy, Roberto Corrada (Denver), reflects on LatCrit’s role in awakening and developing his interest in critical scholarship and critical, community-based, pedagogy. In doing so, he also puts on display how our programmatic work, again, twines the personal with the collective, and the human with the intellectual. He reminds us, again, that our work is rooted in difference, and in learning from it.

Civil War: A Board Game As Pedagogy And Critique, Hugh Mccabe Jan 2018

Civil War: A Board Game As Pedagogy And Critique, Hugh Mccabe

Articles

This paper describes the use of a board game, Civil War, as a learning experience in the context of a course on critical theory. Civil War was created by the Educational Games Company of Lebanon and is set during the 1975-1990 Lebanese civil war. The game functions both as a pedagogical instrument, in that players learn about the situation in Lebanon while playing the game, but also as a form of critique, in that its makers are clearly using it as a means of articulating their lived experiences and challenging the dominant narratives around the conflict. We suggest that the …

Book: Venture Into A New Realm Of Cross-Cultural Psychology Meditation, Mantric Poetry, And Well-Being: A Qualitative, Cross-Cultural, Cross-Disciplinary Exploration With American Secondary And Japanese Post-Secondary Adolescents, Lunthita M. Duthely, Harashita Y. Sunaoshi, Olga M. Villar-Loubet

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Higher well-being correlates positively with multiple psychological and social outcomes, including workplace success and better academic outcomes for students. Poetry and meditation, independently, have been demonstrated in prior studies to increase well-being in a variety of contexts, including physical and mental health challenges. To our knowledge, this is the only published cross-cultural study that merged contemplative practices and poetry within the well-being paradigm, particularly among general, non-clinical adolescent populations. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the use of meditation and mantric poetry in a cross-cultural, educational context. The materials included The Jewels of Happiness: Inspiration and Wisdom …

The Jesus Quotient: Iq -> Eq -> Aq, Jennie A. Harrop Jan 2018

The Jesus Quotient: Iq -> Eq -> Aq, Jennie A. Harrop

Doctor of Ministry

While we have discussed home churches and missional community involvement in recent decades, we have done little to acknowledge that the vernacular Tim Keller calls us to is nearly impossible to achieve in a culture that is deeply entrenched with biblical mythologies. How do we speak without raising walls of assumption, judgment, defensiveness, or anger? How do we assess the criticisms or hurt of others if we cannot identify our own? Jesus did not ponder IQ or EQ. He knew his God-given purpose and emotional character so deeply that he was able to operate out of those foundations without pausing …

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone Project, Elizabeth Sheehan Jan 2018

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone Project, Elizabeth Sheehan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Deforestation negatively impacts wildlife populations, specifically through the establishment of forest fragments – the breaking up of forest into small disconnected patches which increases the edge to interior ratio. Forest fragments are either created naturally or by anthropogenic causes. While both exhibit negative impacts on wildlife populations, anthropogenic edges may more negatively impact an animal population’s group size and sex ratio, which are vital to a population’s reproductive success and survival. The purpose of this research project is to gain insight into the effects of both natural and anthropogenic forest edges on white-faced capuchin’s (Cebus capucinus) group size and sex …

Medical Home Access Effect On Recidivism Rates Of The Inner City Juvenile Detention Population, Gordon E. Duvall

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This is an overview of the DNP project that was used for the writer’s Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. The project focus is the population at Gilliam Youth Services Center, the juvenile detention center that serves Denver County, Colorado. The project’s objective was to provide resources to the residents that are served by Gilliam, in the form of access to a medical home. The assessment attempted to provide data to show that there is a need for an intervention to provide this population with the resources and benefits that the services of a medical home provide.

Archaeological Investigations At The Fort Hill Earthwork Complex, Michael Dodrill, Bridget Coyne Jan 2018

Archaeological Investigations At The Fort Hill Earthwork Complex, Michael Dodrill, Bridget Coyne

Undergraduate Research Posters 2018

Geophysical and archaeological investigations were conducted this past summer at the Fort Hill Earthwork Complex located in the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. Our investigations have not only revealed when the earthworks were created and by which prehistoric culture group, but we also have uncovered data to suggest how they were constructed and for what possible purpose they may have served. In addition, we conducted extensive archival research at several local historical societies and museums looking for previously unpublished information about this site’s initial discovery in the mid-1800s and for any additional information concerning the prehistoric occupation of …
