Two new find sites have been added to the inventory, bringing the total to 19. In addition, two new types have been recorded, each with variants. Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives, Janice Schuster Jan 2018

Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives, Janice Schuster

Library Faculty and Staff papers

The collections that comprise Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives,

covering 1941-1996, include primary sources from the Central

Intelligence Agency’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)

Daily Reports, 1941-1996 and its Joint Publications Research Service

(JPRS) Reports, 1957-1995. The online versions of these sources are

not consolidated anywhere else, making these collections invaluable

for researchers in the various disciplines covered. Weaknesses of the

database include the inability to search across all collections simultaneously,

the absence of help screens, and the inability to export to

bibliographic management tools such as RefWorks or Zotero.

Managing Ambiguous Amphibians: Feral Cows, People, And Place In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson Jan 2018

Managing Ambiguous Amphibians: Feral Cows, People, And Place In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes how a herd of feral cattle emerged in the core zone of Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve and why it still exists despite numerous challenges to the legality of its presence there. Answering these questions requires an analytical approach that begins from the premise that animals, plants, substances, documents, and technologies are active participants in making social and political worlds rather than passive objects of human intervention and manipulation. Drawing together insights from multispecies ethnography, animal geography, amphibious anthropology, and studies of nature protection in former Soviet republics, the author argues that the feral cattle exist because they …

The Representation Of Multiracial People In America With A Focus On Children’S Literature, Janelle M. Barth Jan 2018

The Representation Of Multiracial People In America With A Focus On Children’S Literature, Janelle M. Barth

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Data continues to show that people who claim two or more races are amongst the fastest growing subset of the U.S. population. According to the 2010 Census, nearly half of the respondents identifying as multiracial are under the age of eighteen. This paper examines the representation of mixed race people in America through an historical examination of how they were racially classified, interviews, with a focus on racial identity development, and an analysis of picture books featuring multiracial main characters. While American society as whole is becoming more accepting of mixed race people, there are still considerable gaps in the …

Behavioral Perspectives On Risk Prone Behavior: Why Do People Take Risks?, Shelby Wolf, Daniel Houlihan Jan 2018

Behavioral Perspectives On Risk Prone Behavior: Why Do People Take Risks?, Shelby Wolf, Daniel Houlihan

Psychology Department Publications

Utilizing the principles and concepts of behavioral economics and operant psychology, researchers in both fields initiated the creation of the optimal foraging theory. This theory describes foraging behaviors mostly within animals other than humans. However, within recent empirical studies, optimal foraging theory has been modified to explain risky choices and decision-making processes within the context of risk-sensitive foraging theory for both animals and humans alike. Although most individuals belonging to the homo sapiens species would not like to admit that their behavior is very animalistic in nature, there is a great deal of veracity behind this idea, ranging from explaining …
