The A.H. Kotz Unnatural History Exhibit, Marian R. Trainor
The A.H. Kotz Unnatural History Exhibit, Marian R. Trainor
Honors College Theses
An exploration in two parts into the development of a narrative through manufactured evidence designed specifically to encourage the suspense of disbelief. The physical work exists within a faux anthropological museum exhibition focused around a human whose history and existence is entirely fabricated. The structural work is the layers of historical and practical research used to develop the suggestion of reality. The exhibit contains samples of the research, artifacts, and specimens collected by the deceased naturalist August Hermann Kotz, along with his falsified history. The second part consists of an overview of the research process and techniques needed to successfully …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand University Students Recycling Behavior, Vanessa Sonnenfeld
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand University Students Recycling Behavior, Vanessa Sonnenfeld
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Improving recycling behavior is an important means to reducing the ever-increasing amount of waste sent to landfills. When discussing sustainable behaviors, such as recycling, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) can be used to explain why people make the decisions they do. The Theory of Planned Behavior utilizes attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control to be the predictors of behavioral intention. Once we can better explain why students decide to recycle or not to recycle we can utilize this data to increase recycling rates. The Theory of Planned Behavior was used as a basis for this study in order …

Aerodynamic Effects Of A Panel Orientation In Volleyball Float Serve, Sungchan Hong, Byung Mook Weon, Yasumi Nakanishi, Kaoru Kimachi, Kazuya Seo, Takeshi Asai
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to clarify the aerodynamic and trajectory characteristics on four type volleyballs using the wind tunnel experiments and a hitting robot. We confirmed, in particular, that the critical Reynolds number (Recr) changed depending on the ball types and panel orientations. Recr for Mizuno ball (conventional) was determined to be ~2.8 × 105 (Drag coefficient; Cd = 0.16) on panel orientation A and ∼2.0 × 105 (Cd = 0.20) on panel orientation B. On the other hand, Recr for Mikasa ball (Olympic Official) was ∼2.9 × 105 …

Dimensions Of Educational Leadership: Cultural, Ethical, And Moral, Richard A. Gregory
School Leadership Review
Given the current state of affairs in the school districts of America, almost any observer could proclaim that a change in policy and leadership is urgently needed. The national pundits and politicians continue to blame the usual suspects: entrenched school cultures, teacher unions, shortened school years, and administrative bloat, to name a few. National educational leadership organizations (NCPEA, UCEA, and AASA) are hard at work defining a Knowledge Base (KB) for the training of educational leaders of the future.
While this author certainly applauds the efforts of these professional organizations, there are some things that university professors can do within …

Effects Of Gender And Foot Position On Acceleration Pattern Of Knee And Hip Joint During Deep Squat, Jae Woo Lee, Young-Tae Lim, Jong Moon Kim, Woen-Sik Chae, Jung Sung Park, Moon-Seok Kwon
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of gender and foot position on the acceleration patterns of the knee and hip joints during deep squat. Twenty-two male and 10 female collegiate students participated in this study. All the participants performed a deep squat two times in neutral foot position (NFP), with the foot rotated externally by 15° (ERFP). A wireless triaxial accelerometer was attached on the right-side knee and hip joints of each participant. Acceleration data generated in the anterior-posterior (AP), medio-lateral (ML), and superior-inferior (SI) directions during deep squat were collected through the attached acceleration sensor …
All About That Place: The Curious Case Of Bingo Liberalisation In Brazil, Toni Williams
All About That Place: The Curious Case Of Bingo Liberalisation In Brazil, Toni Williams
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Bingo is a form of gaming that is often associated with good works, social services, low stakes entertainment, and working-class sociality. In many parts of the world bingo halls are the province of charities, veterans’ clubs, older women, and families: But not in Brazil. Commercial bingo grew rapidly in Brazil during a decade of legality that ended in 2004. Legal bingo halls employed tens of thousands of people and the game was widely played by middle-class and well-educated Brazilians as well as older working-class women and men. However, the game, or more precisely the bingo halls in which it was …
Risk, Charity, And Boundary Disputes: The Liberalisation And Commercialisation Of Online Bingo In The European Union, Donal Casey
Risk, Charity, And Boundary Disputes: The Liberalisation And Commercialisation Of Online Bingo In The European Union, Donal Casey
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Land-based bingo has traditionally been perceived as a low-risk social form of gambling. The game is often run for purposes of charitable fundraising, and in many countries bingo is associated in good causes and community rather than risk or profit. These distinguishing characteristics have shaped bingo’s regulation in many jurisdictions. However, technological advances have changed the nature of the game as it moved online and challenged traditional approaches to regulation. In this paper, I document the evolution of online bingo regulation in order to explore what we can learn about the changing ways in which states govern speculative play through …
Regulation And Resistance In Canadian Bingo Halls: A Socio-Legal Account, Kate Bedford
Regulation And Resistance In Canadian Bingo Halls: A Socio-Legal Account, Kate Bedford
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Bingo is a key lens through which to explore how regulation shapes (or fails to shape) different meanings of gambling, and by extension the different meanings attached to speculation in everyday life. In Canada, bingo is played in a highly distinctive gambling environment that is now being subjected to more standardised rules, often drawn from casinos. In this article, I consider how workers and players in Canadian bingo halls are affected by shifting landscapes of provincial bingo regulation. By exploring smoking bans and new rules on touching cash, I ask: what is happening to bingo and its distinctive player demographic …

Keeping Chance In Its Place: The Socio-Legal Regulation Of Gambling, Kate Bedford, Donal Casey, Alexandra Flynn
Journal of Law and Social Policy
In the winter of 2010, driving through a blizzard to a research interview outside of Ottawa, one of the co-editors of this special issue—Kate Bedford—slid and spun off the road in her rental car. The interviewee—an 80-year-old man who organized a small weekly bingo game—helped dig her out. Sitting in the community centre with him afterwards, thawing, there was ample opportunity for Bedford to reflect on the diverse meanings attached to gambling and the complex ways in which it is regulated. The interviewee talked about ‘use of proceeds’ forms and validating expenses payments for volunteers, describing a gambling landscape that …

Neighborhood Bystander Intervention In Intimate Partner Abuse: The Role Of Social Cohesion, Jessica Lee Lucero, Jennifer Roark, Andrea Patton
Neighborhood Bystander Intervention In Intimate Partner Abuse: The Role Of Social Cohesion, Jessica Lee Lucero, Jennifer Roark, Andrea Patton
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
This study examines the relationships among individual beliefs about intimate partner abuse (IPA), attitudes about IPA reporting, social cohesion, and the intention of intervening in neighborhood IPA. Data for this study come from a larger cross‐sectional, community‐based study in which participants (N = 1,626) were surveyed face to face using stratified random sampling in targeted communities in a Mountain West state (i.e., drop‐off, pick‐up method) and online using social media outreach in targeted communities. Linear regression results indicated that participants were less likely to intervene in IPA situations in their neighborhood if they held beliefs about the private nature …

High-Precision Lead Isotope Analysis On Modern Populations To Determine Geolocation Reliability, Gennifer M. Goad
High-Precision Lead Isotope Analysis On Modern Populations To Determine Geolocation Reliability, Gennifer M. Goad
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Forensic anthropologists increasingly use chemical isotope analysis in the investigation of unidentified human remains, as biochemical georeferencing continually improves with the development of modern reference data of known origins. Isotope variations in trace elements such as strontium (Sr) and lead (Pb) in human teeth are some of the most useful indicators of past domicile in archaeological research and thus have high potential for modern, forensic applications. In this study, high-precision lead isotope analysis was conducted on 63 modern human teeth, which were previously analyzed for strontium isotopes. The results present new lead isotope data for the following countries: United States …

Protecting Rohingya Refugees In Asean: The Contested Human Rights In The World Of Na- Tion-States, Nurul Azizah Zayzda
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
This paper departs from the concern that states’ policy towards refugees and asylum seekers around theworld has not necessarily encouraged a true meaning of refugee protection. Instead, the policy related to their situation has been founded on the ba- sis of states’ rights to accept asylum. In consequence, there have been always cases of refugees living in limbo, denied from protection or even deported to their home countries. The fact however needs to be not taken for granted, to be acknowledged as result of construction by wide range of actors; states, intergovernmental states, international non-governmental organizations, individuals, etc. This paper …

Higher Education In Bangladesh: An Inquiry Into Educational Equity At Notre Dame University Bangladesh (Ndub), Subal Lawrence Rozairo
Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated educational equity at the University of Notre Dame Bangladesh (NDUB), a coeducational Catholic institution founded in 2014 in Dhaka, by the Holy Cross Order. Educational equity in higher education is pivotal to advancing social justice in Bangladesh, a developing country with a long history of oppression and social justice challenges. Participants included 3 top university administrators, 20 professors, and 30 minority students selected to via snowball sampling. Open- and closed-ended survey items focused on institutional policy, and on administrators’, professors’, and students’ perceptions/perspectives on educational equity as a dimension of social justice at NDUB. In addition, …
Reflections On Structuralist Narratology, Shouyi Jiang
Reflections On Structuralist Narratology, Shouyi Jiang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The rise of structuralist narratology has its theoretical source and theoretical prelude. Its theoretical source includes Saussure's concern of the language and Russian formalism's attention to "form". Its theoretical prelude includes the concern of 'perspective' in the U. K. and the USA, the contribution to novel theory, Propp's Morphology of the Folktale and the study of Lévi-Strauss's structure anthropology. After the preparations of the above theories, structuralist narratology emerged in France which developed into three research approaches: focusing on the story structure, focusing on the composition system of works and focusing on the function of the narrator. Though each approach …
Thinking About The Coding Process In Qualitative Data Analysis, Victoria Elliott
Thinking About The Coding Process In Qualitative Data Analysis, Victoria Elliott
The Qualitative Report
Coding is a ubiquitous part of the qualitative research process, but it is often under-considered in research methods training and literature. This article explores a number of questions about the coding process which are often raised by beginning researchers, in the light of the recommendations of methods textbooks and the factors which contribute to an answer to these questions. I argue for a conceptualisation of coding as a decision-making process, in which decisions about aspects of coding such as density, frequency, size of data pieces to be coded, are all made by individual researchers in line with their methodological background, …

U–Pb-Dated Flowstones Restrict South African Early Hominin Record To Dry Climate Phases, Robyn Pickering, Andy I.R. Herries, Jon D. Woodhead
KIP Articles
The Cradle of Humankind (Cradle) in South Africa preserves a rich collection of fossil hominins representing Australopithecus, Paranthropus and Homo1. The ages of these fossils are contentious2,3,4 and have compromised the degree to which the South African hominin record can be used to test hypotheses of human evolution. However, uranium–lead (U–Pb) analyses of horizontally bedded layers of calcium carbonate (flowstone) provide a potential opportunity to obtain a robust chronology5. Flowstones are ubiquitous cave features and provide a palaeoclimatic context, because they grow only during phases of increased effective precipitation6,7, ideally in closed caves. Here we show that flowstones from eight …

The Performance Of Memorialization: Politics Of Memory And Memory-Making At The Arthur G. Dozier School For Boys, Kaniqua Robinson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My study examines how religion operates as a form of social control in the politics of memory and memory making in the case of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (1900-2011), a state reform school in Marianna, Florida. Collective memory making is a dynamic process that reflects the social, economic, and political tensions of the present. It is a process most evident during circumstances of reconciliation following conflict, violence, or cases of turmoil resulting in death and in conflicting memories of the experience. Emergence of a dominant narrative about the tragedy or traumatizing event and subjugation of conflicting stories …
