Attitudes Towards Vaccinations In The Minnesota Slavic Community, Maksim Kozak, Hannah Margaret Roy, Rachel Van Heest Jan 2018

Attitudes Towards Vaccinations In The Minnesota Slavic Community, Maksim Kozak, Hannah Margaret Roy, Rachel Van Heest

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of vaccine preventable illnesses is increasing in the United States. Negative attitudes towards vaccinations, or vaccine hesitancy is fueling the decreasing vaccination rates. Ascertaining the level of vaccine hesitancy in susceptible populations is essential in combatting the rise of vaccine preventable illnesses in the United States. Very little research has previously been compiled on vaccine attitudes in Slavic immigrants. Slavic immigrants identify racially as “white” on surveys, masking differences in the Slavic population from the much larger Caucasian population in the United States. In order to better understand the level of vaccine hesitancy in the Minnesota Slavic immigrant …

Branding Factors That Influence Impulse Buying, Talia Fioretti Jan 2018

Branding Factors That Influence Impulse Buying, Talia Fioretti

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

In my thesis paper, I begin by discussing research on branding, such as research on brand personalities, factors that make for a powerful brand, and effects of strong brands. I then discuss research on impulse buying, such as research on internal factors within consumers that can affect impulse buying, external/situational influences that can affect impulse buying, and the effects of product category on impulse buying. I then discuss an original study I ran that explores the relationship between branding and impulse buying. My research suggests that there is indeed a relationship between branding and impulse buying. For instance, the results …

Voices From The Ground Up: Transfer Of Learning Within The Context Of Research And Study Activities, Valeda Dent, Kimberly Mullins, Eamon Tewell, Natalia Tomlin Jan 2018

Voices From The Ground Up: Transfer Of Learning Within The Context Of Research And Study Activities, Valeda Dent, Kimberly Mullins, Eamon Tewell, Natalia Tomlin

University Libraries Faculty Publications

A mid-sized university library system conducted a large scale mixed-methods research project intended to better understand the student library experience and ways to enhance it. One aspect of the project included a detailed and iterative analysis of interview data that yielded emerging patterns of behavior related to research and study activities. Using a grounded theory approach, a qualitative methodology that uses empirical data to generate theory, the researchers developed a construct that some research and study activities are mutually informative and are likely manifested through the process of transfer of learning. The article describes the approach used to develop the …

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen Jan 2018

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Landscape design needs a novel value system centred on human experience of the landscape rather than simply on economic value. Design-oriented research allows us to shift the focus from mechanistic paradigms towards new sense-making approaches that value both the sensual and the cognitive in human experience. To move in this direction, we investigate cultural and natural aspects of sensory experience in rural landscapes, arguing that: (1) rural (non-urban) regions offer diverse sensory experiences for optimising human health; and (2) spatial interconnectedness between rural and urban areas means that healthy rural regions are critical for urban development. Our key argument is …

Music, Myth And Motherland: Culturally Centered Music & Imagery, Sangeeta Swamy Jan 2018

Music, Myth And Motherland: Culturally Centered Music & Imagery, Sangeeta Swamy

Music Faculty Publications

This study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), a music-centered, psychotherapeutic technique that emphasizes socio-cultural context, identity and meaning. The purpose was to examine how participants’ native music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess ethnic identity in a globalized context. Five cisgender Indian men and women from Hindu backgrounds participated in one CCMI session each, including an interview and follow up discussions. The qualitative methodology of portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 1997) was used in this study. The results reveal how CCMI can access the cultural and ethnic unconscious, …

Mourning The Commons: Circulating Affect In Crowdfunded Funeral Campaigns, Tamara Kneese Jan 2018

Mourning The Commons: Circulating Affect In Crowdfunded Funeral Campaigns, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

This article focuses on the role of circulated affect in crowdfunded funeral campaigns, which have attracted little scholarly attention so far. This study is based on content analysis of online campaigns (N = 50) and qualitative interviews (N = 10) with campaign supporters and initiators. Its aim is to connect crowdfunded funeral campaigns to the larger digital-sharing economy. The findings of the study suggest that in order to gather sufficient funds to cover funeral costs, individuals share emotionally evocative narratives and images with their social networks and an imagined Internet audience with the expectation of attracting compassion. The study shows …

Don Carlos Homestead Archaeological Excavation, Christine E. Boston, Michelle Brooks Jan 2018

Don Carlos Homestead Archaeological Excavation, Christine E. Boston, Michelle Brooks

Social and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Research

"The Don Carlos Homestead site is located in the northern part of Moniteau County and was occupied from 1828 to the 1950s by the Don Carlos family, whose heritage traces back to Spanish royalty. All that currently exists of the site includes remnants of the original cellar, a wagon, water pump, and cistern. The land the site occupies has been owned by only two families in its nearly 200 years of occupation, providing ideal circumstances to learn more about the original settler family." --From poster

Interpersonal Violence And Suicidality Among Former Child Soldiers And War-Exposed Civilian Children In Nepal., Anvita Bhardwaj, Christine Bourey, Sauharda Rai, Ramesh Prasad Adhikari, Carol M Worthman, Brandon A Kohrt Jan 2018

Interpersonal Violence And Suicidality Among Former Child Soldiers And War-Exposed Civilian Children In Nepal., Anvita Bhardwaj, Christine Bourey, Sauharda Rai, Ramesh Prasad Adhikari, Carol M Worthman, Brandon A Kohrt

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Suicide risk reduction is crucial for 15-29-year-old youth, who account for 46% of suicide deaths in low- and middle-income countries. Suicide predictors in high-resource settings, specifically depression, do not adequately predict suicidality in these settings. We explored if interpersonal violence (IPV) was associated with suicidality, independent of depression, in Nepal.

Methods: A longitudinal cohort of child soldiers and matched civilian children, enrolled in 2007 after the People's War in Nepal, were re-interviewed in 2012. The Depression Self-Rating Scale and Composite International Diagnostic Interview assessed depression and suicidality, respectively. Non-verbal response cards were used to capture experiences of sexual and …

Orientalism And The Un: Deconstructing The Double Standard In Policies Of Fgm/C, Casey L. Ball Jan 2018

Orientalism And The Un: Deconstructing The Double Standard In Policies Of Fgm/C, Casey L. Ball

2018 Symposium

Female genital mutilation, cutting or circumcision (FGM/C) involves removing or altering the female genitalia. The UN’s Zero Tolerance Policy toward FGM disregards the cultural application of these practices and implements educational programs, while criminally prosecuting those participating in the performance of FGM/C. The UN and associated organizations reference female genital mutilation (FGM), although to maintain objectivity across genital practices, FGM/C will be used in this paper. This paper proposes that the double standard between Western-classified cultures and cultures traditionally practicing FGM/C exists as the international regime of human rights, created by the cultural hegemony, imposes a juxtaposition of acceptable and …
