The Culture Of Misdemeanor Courts, Jessica A. Roth Feb 2018

The Culture Of Misdemeanor Courts, Jessica A. Roth

Hofstra Law Review

The misdemeanor courts that preside over the majority of criminal cases in the United States represent the “front porch” of our criminal justice system. These courts vary in myriad ways, including size, structure, and method of judicial appointment. Each also has its own culture – i.e., a settled way of doing things that reflects deeper assumptions about the court’s mission and its role in the community – which can assist or impede desired policy reforms. This Article, written for a Symposium issue of the Hofstra Law Review, draws upon the insights of organizational culture theory to explore how leaders can …

Social Position Influencing The Water Perception Gap Between Local Leaders And Constituents In A Socio-Hydrological System, Melissa Haeffner, Douglas Jackson-Smith, Courtney G. Flint Feb 2018

Social Position Influencing The Water Perception Gap Between Local Leaders And Constituents In A Socio-Hydrological System, Melissa Haeffner, Douglas Jackson-Smith, Courtney G. Flint

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

How well city leaders represent their constituents and meet their needs are key concerns in transitioning to local sustainable water governance. To date, however, there is little research documenting the influence of social position between elected leaders who make policy, career staff water managers who design and operate systems and implement policies, and the members of the public whose individual water use behaviors are important drivers of water sustainability outcomes. In this study, we ask: ‘‘How does social position explain variation in water perceptions and concerns between different actors in a sociohydrological system?’’ Using a mixed method approach with survey …

Theoretical Explanations Of Jyoshi Kousei Business ("Jk Business") In Japan, Mutsumi Ogaki Feb 2018

Theoretical Explanations Of Jyoshi Kousei Business ("Jk Business") In Japan, Mutsumi Ogaki

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Jyoshi kousei (JK) means high school girls in Japanese and “JK business” is an umbrella term for commercial activities done by high school girls to provide male customers with sexual arousal. The “JK business” is considered to promote sexual exploitation or sexual assault of minors. Currently, only two prefectures out of 47 in Japan enforce ordinances that specifically regulate the “JK business.” This paper intends to explore possible theoretical explanations of the “JK business” to raise awareness on the issue. Gendered pathways theory and sexual script theory are selected as the primary source of the discussions. Policy implications and future …

The Evolutionary Mismatch Hypothesis: Implications For Psychological Science, Norman P. Li, Mark Van Vugt, Stephen M. Colarelli Feb 2018

The Evolutionary Mismatch Hypothesis: Implications For Psychological Science, Norman P. Li, Mark Van Vugt, Stephen M. Colarelli

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Human psychological mechanisms are adaptations that evolved to process environmental inputs, turning them into behavioral outputs that, on average, increase survival or reproductive prospects. Modern contexts, however, differ vastly from the environments that existed as human psychological mechanisms evolved. Many inputs now differ in quantity and intensity or no longer have the same fitness associations, thereby leading many mechanisms to produce maladaptive output. We present the precepts of this evolutionary mismatch process, highlight areas of mismatch, and consider implications for psychological science and policy.

Strategies Of Salvation: Evangelical Christian Praxis And Sites Of Degradation In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods Feb 2018

Strategies Of Salvation: Evangelical Christian Praxis And Sites Of Degradation In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper demonstrates how disasters create sites of degradation – potent spaces of upheaval and engagement – that are readily filled and exploited by evangelical Christian groups. In doing so, it explores how disasters provide opportunities for evangelical groups to gain a foothold in localities where Christian presence, and evangelical praxis, may otherwise be restricted. Drawing on qualitative data collected in Sri Lanka throughout 2010–2011, two comparative case studies are presented that reveal the strategies of evangelical Christian praxis in and through sites of environmental and political degradation. Specifically, the case studies reveal how evangelical groups pursue ‘outside‐in’ and ‘inside‐out’ …

Migration And Shifting Borders: Re-Conceptualizing Non-Citizens In Turkey, Jessica Zerrin Holle Feb 2018

Migration And Shifting Borders: Re-Conceptualizing Non-Citizens In Turkey, Jessica Zerrin Holle

Theses and Dissertations

In an age of securitization, in which the movement of individuals across borders has become securitized, and in which borders themselves are being externalized in an attempt to curb migration flows, the conventional notion of a static citizen-state relationship within the nation-state system is increasingly becoming inapplicable. Central to this thesis is the question: In a climate of securitized migration, and against the backdrop of the refugee/migration "crisis" has the externalization of EU borders through its migration management partnership with Turkey contributed to or brought about alternative conceptualizations of foreignness, citizenship, and non-citizenship in Turkey? Protection for asylum seekers in …

Biographies Of Port-Said: Everydayness Of State, Dwellers, And Strangers, Mostafa Mohielden Lotfy Feb 2018

Biographies Of Port-Said: Everydayness Of State, Dwellers, And Strangers, Mostafa Mohielden Lotfy

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis examined how the social of the city of Port Said has been assembled, and how the spaces of the city have been produced through the practices of the dwellers and the state. I focused on the processes of the making and the transformation of the people and the city in specific moments. I focused on al tahgeer (the forced migration that followed the outbreak of the 1967 war and lasted until 1974), the declaration of the free trade zone in the mid-1970s, and the massacre of Port Said stadium in 2012. The city of Port Said was built …

Deconstructing City Hall Park: The Development And Archaeology Of The Common, Alyssa Loorya Feb 2018

Deconstructing City Hall Park: The Development And Archaeology Of The Common, Alyssa Loorya

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

City Hall Park in lower Manhattan, once known as The Common, has a long history of public use dating as far back as the Dutch in the seventeenth century. As the site has been continually occupied for almost 400 years, it is an integral part of New York City’s only recognized Archaeological District. Over half a million artifacts, numerous structural features, and human burials have been recovered and documented on archaeological projects since the 1980s.

While archaeological work at City Hall Park has been undertaken multiple times by multiple archaeologists, all have been instigated by construction projects. As a result, …

Betty Friedan And Juliet Mitchell: Critiques Of Ideology And Power, Jennie Eagle Feb 2018

Betty Friedan And Juliet Mitchell: Critiques Of Ideology And Power, Jennie Eagle

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My thesis attends to a common thread of critique in two founding documents of “second-wave” feminism: Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique (1963) and Juliet Mitchell’s “Women: the Longest Revolution.” I am interested in the ways in which both foundational texts de-naturalize male supremacy by defining it as ideological. The concept of ideology as employed by three notable social theorists – Marx’s concept of a social mythology disseminated by ruling elites to uphold various forms of hierarchy, operating through internal contradictions; French communist Louis Althusser’s concept of a social practice disseminated by the institutions of civil society; and Michel Foucault’s identification …

Race, Sexuality, And Masculinity On The Down Low, Stephen Kochenash Feb 2018

Race, Sexuality, And Masculinity On The Down Low, Stephen Kochenash

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In a so-called post-racial America, a new gay identity has flourished and come into the limelight. However, in recent years, researchers have concluded that not all men who have sex with other men (MSM) self-identify as gay, most noticeably a large population of Black men. It is possible that a tainted history of Black enslavement in this country that is inextricably linked with ideas of space, surveillance, subversion, and survival inform a Black male’s self-identification as being “on the down low” (DL). This begs the question: What does mainstream society view as gay-ness and how is the DL constructed …

Embody: The Transformation Of Intimate Knowledges Through Generations In Liberal Societies, Lisa Kronberg Feb 2018

Embody: The Transformation Of Intimate Knowledges Through Generations In Liberal Societies, Lisa Kronberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis project aims to examine how intimate knowledges[1] are transferred and communicated between generations in Western, liberal societies. By ‘Intimate knowledges’ I mean to encompass diverse knowledge of emotional intelligence, sexual identity, and gender.

Intimate knowledges evolve with human life circle everywhere and at all times, but in Western popular discourse of today, are treated with confusion and repression; they thus emerge as a “loud display of simultaneously silent sexual desire.” (Fine and McClelland, 2006) I explore this tension through a critical, feminist lens that sheds light on the ways in which political economy creates cultural norms that …

Military Citizenship In The Post-9/11 Homefront, Estefania Ponti Feb 2018

Military Citizenship In The Post-9/11 Homefront, Estefania Ponti

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In discussion with the literature on the treatment of veterans in the United States and the nature of American citizenship ideology, the following dissertation asks how post-9/11 veterans are defining, (re)creating, and contesting citizenship in the contemporary U.S. By studying a localized community of post-9/11 veterans, my dissertation highlights the dilemmas of U.S. citizenship at a time when the U.S. is engaged in a global War on Terror using less than 1% of the U.S. population as paid volunteers. Soldiers and veterans occupy states and spaces of exception, marking military citizens as distinct from civilians. Military citizenship benefits the nation …

Conditions Of Personhood And Property, Zachary James Acree Feb 2018

Conditions Of Personhood And Property, Zachary James Acree

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper seeks to demonstrate that a more robust understanding of personhood both reveals flaws in the underlying assumptions of modern property law, and orients that law to a more just application. To do this, the law needs not only a better definition of what persons are, but also a better understanding of how persons function in their society. First, in order to provide some context to the issues at stake, there is a brief historical introduction to some of the problems that personhood inquiries have faced. After the introduction, this paper is divided into four sections. Part I summarizes …

The Analysis Of The Key Doctrines Of Boko Haram (Jama’At Ahl-I- Sunnah Li Al-Da’Wati Wa Al-Jihad)., Aisha Muhammad Iyawa Feb 2018

The Analysis Of The Key Doctrines Of Boko Haram (Jama’At Ahl-I- Sunnah Li Al-Da’Wati Wa Al-Jihad)., Aisha Muhammad Iyawa

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of Boko Haram has received considerable critical attention. It is one of the contemporary threats of the globe . They created a devastation that is having an adverse impact on Islam and the socioeconomic situation in the region and in some parts of Africa. There is a growing body of literature on Boko Haram, mostly focusing on the political aspects. Little emphasis has been put on the religious approach. This study is important because it will approach the issue from a religious perspective. This will be done by analyzing some of their doctrines to challenge and correct some …

When Two Become One: Reconsidering Marriage As A Sacrament In Protestant Theology, Adam Neal Feb 2018

When Two Become One: Reconsidering Marriage As A Sacrament In Protestant Theology, Adam Neal

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Protestant theology has historically rejected marriage as sacrament, a rejection which continues to resound in the majority of contemporary Protestant scholarship. Yet many, if not most, arguments against sacramental marriage tacitly follow an outline set forward by Luther and Calvin which, if examined with critical scrutiny, is based on a problematic soteriological premise. In light of this, the present study sets forward a comprehensive argument in favor of Protestant theology reaffirming marriage as a sacrament through systematic investigation into the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), New Testament, and Christian history. After developing a critical hermeneutic founded on realist epistemological grounds, a …

The Relative Value And Role Of Copper Within An Egyptian New Kingdom Economic Context: Using Production, Trade And Use Of Copper As Indicators Of Copper's Value, Daniel Johnsen Feb 2018

The Relative Value And Role Of Copper Within An Egyptian New Kingdom Economic Context: Using Production, Trade And Use Of Copper As Indicators Of Copper's Value, Daniel Johnsen

Theses and Dissertations

Ancient Egypt's use of copper was extensive and represented a sizable portion of Egypt's metallurgical focus. There has been limited discussion about the metallurgical technologies of the New Kingdom or the role of copper in an economic context. This thesis examines the modes, methods and technologies involved in copper acquisition, processing and use to ascertain and demonstrate the relative value of copper within the economy of New Kingdom Egypt. It is argued that copper represented one of the greatest and most widely used commodities available to the Egyptians. Various economic theories are also highlighted to compare possible effects of copper …

Incentives Of Violence Dynamics And Duration Of The Syrian Civil War, Mennatallah Fouad Youssef Feb 2018

Incentives Of Violence Dynamics And Duration Of The Syrian Civil War, Mennatallah Fouad Youssef

Theses and Dissertations

For centuries the world has been plagued with conflict and violence that cause destruction, population displacement, famine, hunger and outright chaos. As the image of warfare has continually changed, internal conflict or civil wars became a more common site. With the end of the cold war, the world has witnessed an increasing number of civil strife enticing debates in the study of civil war on "new" and "old" wars and the encouraging theories on civil war onset and duration. The Middle East region is no stranger to the phenomena of civil war with the area itself home to several conflicts. …

Carrying Messages Of "Peace" To The World: Landscape, Discourses, And Practices Of Peace In Hiroshima, Yuichi Yokoyama Feb 2018

Carrying Messages Of "Peace" To The World: Landscape, Discourses, And Practices Of Peace In Hiroshima, Yuichi Yokoyama

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is my exploration of what the landscape of peace, onto which past relevant actors' discourses and practices of peace and my interlocutors' present practices of peace are inscribed, represents and silences, and how my interlocutors, who relate their activities to the concept peace, make sense of the concept peace. In the literature in the field of anthropology of peace, peace has been what is defined by the anthropologists, not by their interlocutors. In other words, the anthropologists' definitions of peace have silenced their interlocutors' understandings of peace. This whole thesis was written as a critique of how these …

Assessing Parenting: Adaptation Of The Home Inventory For Use In Egypt, Khadiga Abdellatif Alsharif Feb 2018

Assessing Parenting: Adaptation Of The Home Inventory For Use In Egypt, Khadiga Abdellatif Alsharif

Theses and Dissertations

A study of violence against children in Egypt found that in 2014, 93% of children between the ages of 0-14 were subject to some form of violent discipline. While Egyptian law protects children from abuse, in practice it is challenging for social workers and other child protection practitioners to intervene. There is a lack of protocols for home visitation and family intervention, and there are no standardized procedures for assessing parenting practices and determining the safety of children’s homes. The HOME inventory, short for Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment, is a tool that has been adopted internationally and …

Egypt's Desert Paradoxes, Promises, And Possibilities: A Study Of Land Reclamation Policies Along Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, Salwa Yehia Salman Feb 2018

Egypt's Desert Paradoxes, Promises, And Possibilities: A Study Of Land Reclamation Policies Along Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, Salwa Yehia Salman

Theses and Dissertations

In 2016 ‘People’s Right’ campaign, also known as the National Committee for Retrieving Looted State Lands, was assigned to either retrieve or facilitate the formal registration of state lands according to occupants’ personal cases. This study explores the official representations of desert land reclamation, allocation, and distribution, with a focus on the (re-) conceptualization of rights, state territoriality, and sovereignty as a part of an emerging national narrative on state lands and property rights. The study draws on methodological insights in the anthropology of development which employs a Foucauldian discourse analysis to examine ‘development’ and the role of the state …

Foundations And Applications Of Theory In The First Impressions Program, Laura E. Brown, John Mcdonald, Lisa C. Chase, Geoffrey Sewake, Beverly Stencel, Andy Northrop, Ryan Faulkner Feb 2018

Foundations And Applications Of Theory In The First Impressions Program, Laura E. Brown, John Mcdonald, Lisa C. Chase, Geoffrey Sewake, Beverly Stencel, Andy Northrop, Ryan Faulkner

Journal of Extension

The First Impressions program was designed to help communities learn about their strengths and shortcomings through the "fresh eyes" of first-time visitors. This Extension-led community assessment program has been implemented in over 500 communities since the 1990s, yet scant literature exists regarding the program's theoretical foundations or best practices for implementation or evaluation. To address increasing interest in the program among Extension professionals nationwide, we aim to encourage new scholarship regarding the program's use and impacts by providing an overview of how the program works; a discussion of theoretical foundations of the program from geography, urban planning, and psychology literature; …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s History of the Incas (1572). A Critical Study and Annotated Edition.

by Aleksín H. Ortega

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa wrote his polemic and undoubtedly political History of the Incas at the request of Francisco de Toledo (Viceroy of Peru, 1569-1581). Toledo wanted to deliver to the Spanish King a version of Incan history which could subsequently be used as an ideological tool in the search of legal and moral arguments to defend the Andean colonization by the Spanish monarchy. Since his arrival to the Peruvian territories, Toledo embarked on a long personal visit to …

The Shari'a Courts Of Mogadishu: Beyond "African Islam" And "Islamic Law", Ahmed Ibrahim Feb 2018

The Shari'a Courts Of Mogadishu: Beyond "African Islam" And "Islamic Law", Ahmed Ibrahim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation, based on a year and eight months of fieldwork, is a historical ethnography of a Shari‘a-based movement which appeared in Mogadishu, Somalia within a year after the complete disintegration of the central government in 1991. The movement originated when religious authorities and “traditional” elders established centers in various neighborhoods in Mogadishu to deal with the vacuum of power after the fall of the state. Since Shari‘a structures of authority and discourse were integral to the formation and functioning of the centers, they became known as Shari‘a courts. My work on the Shari‘a courts intervenes in the literature on …

Balancing Entertainment And Learning In The Popularization Of Mathematics: The Seven Light Bulbs Problem, Man Keung Siu

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Popularization of mathematics plays a significant role in drawing more “friends of mathematics” from the public, which is important for the healthy and prosperous development of the discipline. The issue of a suitable balance between entertainment and learning is constantly on the minds of those who put effort into this task. This article discusses this issue in the context of mathematical museums and describes a simple problem involving seven light bulbs to illustrate its main points.

Indian Dalits And Hindutva Strategies, Seth Schoenhaus Jan 2018

Indian Dalits And Hindutva Strategies, Seth Schoenhaus

Denison Journal of Religion

“Indian Dalits and Hindutva Strategies” by Seth Schoenhaus, ’18. The author tracks the evolution of India’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party alongside Scheduled Caste (specifically Dalit) self-conception to elucidate the BJP’s strategies to attract Dalit voters, who have historically not been receptive to the BJP’s muscular Hindutva thrust. Importantly, appropriating and recasting the Hindu story of Lord Ram in a nationalist light and engaging in historical revisionism regarding Dalit communal leader B.R. Ambedkar has proven vital in engaging with the Dalit electorate. These methods, combined with lingering sentiments of Sanskritization in many Dalit communities and increasing stratification with higher rates …
