Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz Feb 2018

Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

This module will enable faculty and students from across colleges to critically examine their own privileges through reading, dialogue, and Learn By Doing activities. The pragmatic focus will be on self-reflexivity and empowering users to wrestle with how their social identity provides advantages or disadvantages in each of their social relationships. Women Agricultural Landowners—Past Time To Put Them “On The Radar”, Peggy Petrzelka, Ann Sorensen, Jennifer Filipiak

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

While women own 25% of the acres rented out for farming, little has been done in terms of federal policy that focuses on these women. In this policy analysis, we detail how (1) lack of data on these women landowners and (2) the invisibility of these women to federal natural resource and agricultural agency staff contribute to women nonoperating landowners (WNOLs) not being on the federal policy radar. We discuss how the persistence of these factors continues to marginalize WNOLs in federal agricultural policy, despite the mandate of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies to be serving underserved populations such …

Together Without Consensus: Class, Emotions And The Politics Of The Rule Of Law In The Lawyers’ Movement (2007-09) In Pakistan, Salman Hussain Feb 2018

Together Without Consensus: Class, Emotions And The Politics Of The Rule Of Law In The Lawyers’ Movement (2007-09) In Pakistan, Salman Hussain

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is an ethnographic examination of how political emotions, historical memory and notion(s) of the rule of law are mobilized in postcolonial Pakistan. It examines how liberal legality (the rule of law, judiciary and courts) and discourses of rights have become popular hegemonic languages for mobilizing political protests and legal claims in South Asia. In particular, the dissertation studies a protest movement, the Lawyers’ Movement for the Restoration of Judiciary and Democracy (2007-09), that was led by the lawyers and their allied educated and professional middle-classes, and investigates how the lawyers successfully galvanized Pakistanis against the then prevalent military …

Smith, Margaret Thompson Drewel, Stephen Wehmeyer, Jason Berry and others, have established a solid foundation for research on African influences and retentions in expressive folk cultures, laying a firm foundation for this project. The author’s insider experiences within the Black Indian tradition are underscored by several …
