Examining Sense Of Place For Marginalized Communities In Community Gardens, Jocelyn Rodriguez Mar 2018

Examining Sense Of Place For Marginalized Communities In Community Gardens, Jocelyn Rodriguez

University Honors Theses

This paper critically examines community garden relationships with particular reference to marginalized communities in Portland, OR. The objective of this study is to explore how gardeners feel about their gardens, why they feel that way and to determine what that garden space does for them. I will discuss the demographics of the neighborhoods the gardens are in to identify the hardships their residents face. Through interviews, I examine relationships participants have with community gardens as spaces that are currently being held by marginalized communities with a sense of place framework.

The Greek System And The Influence Of Cal Poly’S Students Towards Campus Administration, Austin Park Mar 2018

The Greek System And The Influence Of Cal Poly’S Students Towards Campus Administration, Austin Park

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will portray how Cal Poly’s Greek life systems as well as the regular student body have influenced the university’s present policies of alcohol and other misconducts. It will examine the history of some fraternities who have received serious punishments due to their actions which resulted in the expulsion and dissolution of their organizations. However, in efforts to maintain stable relationships with Cal Poly and the residents of San Luis Obispo, it is common for fraternities and sororities to participate in local and national philanthropic services in order to maintain stable relationships through philanthropy. Since the 1970s, fraternities as …

Affirmative Action And Bolsa Família In Brazil, Beatriz C. Vigil Mar 2018

Affirmative Action And Bolsa Família In Brazil, Beatriz C. Vigil

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Bolsa Família is an antipoverty program that has gained a great deal of recognition in Brazil, while affirmative action is a controversial race based program with less political support. Affirmative action in Brazil though is usually framed in nonracial terms, specifically in the most important piece of Brazilian affirmative action legislation, the Lei de Cotas Sociais. Conventional wisdom is thus an artifact of discourse, for both programs are framed in universalistic terms, but disproportionately benefit AfroBrazilians. A word frequency analysis of newspaper articles is conducted to examine the media’s framing of affirmative action and Bolsa Família. The investigation demonstrates that …

“If I Were You”: Tego Calderón’S Diasporic Interventions, Petra R. Rivera-Rideau Mar 2018

“If I Were You”: Tego Calderón’S Diasporic Interventions, Petra R. Rivera-Rideau

Faculty Research and Scholarship

In 2012, reggaeton artist Tego Calderón released a music video for his song “Robin Hood.” The video tells the story of a man who aids a group of undocumented Dominican immigrants to Puerto Rico. Through a close reading of “Robin Hood,” this essay argues that Calderón establishes connections between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans through an understanding of their shared marginalization as black subjects. This has important implications for African diaspora theory, which has typically neglected Puerto Rican and Dominican engagements with blackness. Calderón disrupts two common assumptions about Puerto Rican and Dominican racial politics: first, that Puerto Ricans and Dominicans …

Am I Good Enough? Dealing Pastorally With The Shame Of Women In The Amalgam Of Korean Confucian And Christian Culture, Sarah Ahn Mar 2018

Am I Good Enough? Dealing Pastorally With The Shame Of Women In The Amalgam Of Korean Confucian And Christian Culture, Sarah Ahn

Seminary Masters Theses

In this paper, the literature review of shame is examined: the definition of emotions, the relationship between shame and the self, the definition and characteristics of shame alongside with guilt, the social nature of shame, and the female quality of shame. After examining the previous attempts on shame and its relationship with culture, this paper argues how shame functions, particularly in Korean culture, employing a cultural-anthropological, a societal-anthropological, and a Korean native-psychological approach. Furthermore, the paper explores the relationship between shame and Korean women in the amalgam of Korean Confucian and Christian context. The negative and positive roles of shame …

Linking Ecotourism Livelihood Strategies To Post-Displacement Homemaking In Internally Displaced Communities In Southern Nepal, Sophia Graybill Mar 2018

Linking Ecotourism Livelihood Strategies To Post-Displacement Homemaking In Internally Displaced Communities In Southern Nepal, Sophia Graybill

Sustainability and Social Justice

National park creation and ecotourism development often cause the internal displacement of local communities and shifts in traditional lifestyles. Loss of the physical and intangible home is frequently accompanied by changes to livelihood strategies that, for generations, supported a critical social order, set of power dynamics, and means of producing life meaning for people. Therefore, communities affected by displacement and confronted by rapid modernization often experience protracted risks and instability. This paper draws on information from thirty interviews in four communities surrounding the Royal Chitwan National Park in Southern Nepal to analyze how resettlement and ecotourism development have affected the …

Gendered Lived Experiences In Urban Cape Town: Urban Infrastructure As Equal Opportunity, Social Justice, And Crime Prevention, Becky Jacobs Mar 2018

Gendered Lived Experiences In Urban Cape Town: Urban Infrastructure As Equal Opportunity, Social Justice, And Crime Prevention, Becky Jacobs

Scholarly Works

The body of 19-year-old Sinoxolo Mafevuka was found in a communal toilet in the Cape Town, South African urban township of Khayelitsha. Sinoxolo had been viciously raped, strangled to death, and her body discarded, with her head under the toilet seat and her genitals displayed openly. Tragically, while Sinoxolo’s murder is a particularly brutal example, using a neighborhood toilet in many informal settlements is an incredibly dangerous activity, and there are estimates that 10.5 million South Africans do not have ready access to toilets. “Women, children and men of all ages are frequently robbed, raped, assaulted and murdered on the …

Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora Mar 2018

Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora

Between the Species

Biophilia, theorized by Fromm, Wilson, and Kellert, is examined as a potential support for a pro-animal ethos. First, I look at the idea and its definitions at the hands of its chief theorizers. Then I investigate how different stages of human cultural development (foraging, pastoralism, industrial agriculture) have influenced different aspects of biophilia—especially as this bears on animal alienation. Finally, I consider possible remedies in the form of renewed patterns of solidarity with other species, one of which transforms Marx’ concept of species-being. The article has ethical implications, but it is essentially a work in philosophical anthropology.

Living In A Gender-Binary World: Implications For A Revised Model Of Consumer Vulnerability, Kim Mckeage, Elizabeth Crosby, Terri Rittenburg Mar 2018

Living In A Gender-Binary World: Implications For A Revised Model Of Consumer Vulnerability, Kim Mckeage, Elizabeth Crosby, Terri Rittenburg

School of Business All Faculty Scholarship

Baker, Gentry, and Rittenburg’s (2005) model of consumer vulnerability outlines the personal, social, and structural characteristics that frame consumers’ experiences of vulnerability in the marketplace. Later applications and enhancements have expanded consumer vulnerability theory. While the theory has been applied in numerous settings, to date it has not been used to examine the ways that gender identity may intersect with market factors to produce vulnerability. Application in this setting also allows for the integration of various model enhancements, and the examination of vulnerability using a more complete formulation of the theory. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews and collages, along with …

Migration From Mexico To The Us: The Impacts Of Nafta On Mexico And The United States And What To Do Going Forward, Ashley A. Elsasser Mar 2018

Migration From Mexico To The Us: The Impacts Of Nafta On Mexico And The United States And What To Do Going Forward, Ashley A. Elsasser

International Review of Business and Economics

Research indicates four main causes for migration from Mexico to the United States: Incredibly high crime rates, unemployment, poverty rates, and natural disasters. The first two are especially important in regards to trade between the two border sharing countries. Since agreeing to virtually total free trade, the United States has been able to take advantage of Mexico in such a way that has created further deterioration of the state. If the government of Mexico cannot resurrect the thousands of personal business that were effected do to NAFTA, the U.S. cannot expect for migration from Mexico to deteriorate or halt. By …

Erasmus Mundus Master Of Bioethics: A Case For An Effective Model For International Bioethics Education., Jan Piasecki, Kevin Dirksen, Hamilton Inbadas

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Designing bioethics curriculum for international postgraduate students is a challenging task. There are at least two main questions, which have to be resolved in advance: (1) what is a purpose of a particular teaching program and (2) how to respectfully arrange a classroom for students coming from different cultural and professional backgrounds. In our paper we analyze the case of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics program and provide recommendations for international bioethics education. In our opinion teaching bioethics to postgraduate international students goes beyond curriculum. It means that such a program requires not only well-defined goals, including equipping students …
