Preliminary Analysis Of Hieroglyph And Iconography Placement On Freestanding Monuments At Copán, Honduras, Elizabeth Koenen Mar 2018

Preliminary Analysis Of Hieroglyph And Iconography Placement On Freestanding Monuments At Copán, Honduras, Elizabeth Koenen

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This paper analyzes the placement of hieroglyphs and iconography on freestanding monuments at the ancient Maya site of Copán, Honduras. Preliminary spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) highlight two potentially important findings. First, stelae in the main civic-ceremonial precinct (Principal Group), while erected in the most centralized and public location in the city, are not always placed to allow for public viewing of their fronts. Second, differences may exist in the number of logographic and syllabic glyphs used on a object depending on the type of object and its location. Further research and data collection are needed in order …

Breaking The “Fourth Wall” In Qualitative Research: Participant-Led Digital Data Construction, Nettie Boivin, Anna Cohenmiller Mar 2018

Breaking The “Fourth Wall” In Qualitative Research: Participant-Led Digital Data Construction, Nettie Boivin, Anna Cohenmiller

The Qualitative Report

This article reconstructs the typical researcher-participant focus - where the participants are doing for us - instead we followed the participants’ lead in the construction of research. Using a qualitative literacy event case study as an example, we describe how participants unexpectedly co-constructed knowledge through a participant-led digital data collection. In this theoretical article, we provide an explanation of the original study, which used observations, semi-structured interviews, and home visits as a collective qualitative case study on parental participation in social literacy practices. The original investigation led to the important shift that occurred in participant-researcher roles. In this article, using …

A Warden Or A Ballerina: Examining The Relationship Between Gender Socialization, And Occupational Choice Among Prison Wardens And Superintendents, Karen Altendorf

The Qualitative Report

This study explores the career experiences of women who hold leadership positions within the field of corrections as Wardens and Superintendents. Specifically the research seeks to examine the personal biographies of these women in an effort to document life experiences shaping their occupational choices. Twenty nine interviews were conducted with wardens and superintendents from 13 states. Subjects were questioned about family, education, perceptions of occupational choice, and career aspirations. Generational differences exist between female wardens in relation to boarder social trends in gender and occupation. The more support women receive from parents and family to pursue education and careers, the …

Sex Differences In Political Leadership In An Egalitarian Society, Christopher Von Rueden, Sarah Alami, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven Mar 2018

Sex Differences In Political Leadership In An Egalitarian Society, Christopher Von Rueden, Sarah Alami, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

ESI Publications

We test the contribution of sex differences in physical formidability, education, and cooperation to the acquisition of political leadership in a small-scale society. Among forager-farmers from the Bolivian Amazon, we find that men are more likely to exercise different forms of political leadership, including verbal influence during community meetings, coordination of community projects, and dispute resolution. We show that these differences in leadership are not due to gender per se but are associated with men’s greater number of cooperation partners, greater access to schooling, and greater body size and physical strength. Men’s advantage in cooperation partner number is tied to …

Social Science Goes To War: The Human Terrain System In Iraq And Afghanistan, Ed. Montgomery Mcfate And Janice H. Laurence, Yvonne R. Masakowski

Naval War College Review

The twenty-first-century security environment has been characterized by numerous cross-cultural battle spaces, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. Army initiated the human terrain team (HTT) because it needed to address the impact of the human cultural dimension in the combat operational environment. The HTT’s mission was to conduct research (in the social sciences and anthropology) and to advise military commanders about the unique cultural aspects of the local/ regional population. In eleven chapters, McFate and Laurence have compiled an invaluable collection of experiences from the scientists involved.

Playing War: Wargaming And U.S. Navy Preparations For World War Ii, By John M. Lillard, Jon Scott Logel

Naval War College Review

With the Navy’s recent efforts to rein- vigorate war gaming, there has been renewed interest in the interwar gaming conducted at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. In the Naval War College Review, Proceedings, and other maritime journals, war-gaming experts and enthusiasts alike have tried to characterize the nature and value of the Navy’s war games played between 1919 and 1941. John Lillard’s Playing War: Wargaming and U.S. Navy Prepa- rations for World War II is the latest contribution to this resurgence.

Exploring Internalized Classism Using The Regressive Model Of Self-Stigma, Johanna Collier Mar 2018

Exploring Internalized Classism Using The Regressive Model Of Self-Stigma, Johanna Collier

Dissertations

A growing body of literature on classism suggests that negative attitudes and treatment based on one’s social class may have wide-ranging impacts on one’s sense of self, behaviors, and well-being. Scholars have theorized that internalized classism may be eroding dignity and contributing to observed health disparities between those of higher and lower social classes, but little quantitative research has explored the subject. The present study attempted to address this gap in the literature by applying the regressive model of self-stigma, a model originally developed for internalized mental health stigma, to internalized classism to better understand how to define and measure …

A Military History Of Japan: From The Age Of The Samurai To The 21st Century, By John T. Kuehn, J. Overton Mar 2018

A Military History Of Japan: From The Age Of The Samurai To The 21st Century, By John T. Kuehn, J. Overton

Naval War College Review

Japan is at an inflection point. Depending on how particular peoples and nations view this enigmatic country, it now either is turning away from rightly enforced demilitarization and back toward the more martial and expansionist policies of its past, or is working to become a security provider concomitant with its economic power.

Facebook And The Intricacies Of Migrant Self-Making Among Ilonggo Ofws In South Korea, Clement C.; Camposano Mar 2018

Facebook And The Intricacies Of Migrant Self-Making Among Ilonggo Ofws In South Korea, Clement C.; Camposano

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle explores the diverse ways that Ilonggo-speaking male Filipino migrant workers in South Korea engage with Facebook. It studies the performance of online identities in relation to the migrants’ realities as social subjects and the technological mediation of the self and reciprocal exchange. It argues that online narratives can highlight facets of offline life that allow migrants a measure of biographical stability amid physical displacement, yet the same conditions create opportunities to negotiate competing online and offline narratives, complicating the illusion of a unified self. Online selves call for the need to reformulate Goffman’s notion of the interaction order. Keywords: overseas …

Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language In Philippine Jawi Script, Isaac; Arabic Donoso

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

From the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century PhilippineMoros increasingly wrote the Spanish language in Arabic script knownas Philippine Jawi. This cultural phenomenon, which went beyond merecode switching, is illustrated through documents found in the NationalArchives of the Philippines, particularly protocols involving the Tausug andMaguindanao sultanates. The use of Spanish in Jawi documents increased, thanks to Zamboanga’s role as a cultural center in the south and Manila’sability to attract sultans politically. Jawi was also used as the scriptin language primers through the strategic work of the Jesuit JacintoJuanmartí, who originated Moro philology.KEYWORDS: ALJAMIADO • SPANISH • JAWI • MORO PHILOLOGY • …

Longitudinal Trends In The Frequency Of Medium And Fast Race Winning Times In Australian Harness Racing: Relationships With Rules Moderating Whip Use, Bethany Wilson, Bidda Jones, Paul Mcgreevy

Sport and Working Animal Welfare Collection

The use of whips in racing is subject to current debate, not least because the prospect that fatigued horses cannot respond renders the practice futile and inhumane. The racing industries maintain whip use is a form of encouragement and that the rules of racing that govern whip use safeguard horse welfare. The current study examined longitudinal trends in the frequency of medium and fast race winning times in Australian harness racing between September 2007 and August 2016 to explore relationships with a series of changes that moderated whip use. The first change, introduced January 2010, moderated whip action so that …

The Interactional And Cultural Pragmatics Of Evidentiality In Pastaza Quichua, Janis B. Nuckolls Mar 2018

The Interactional And Cultural Pragmatics Of Evidentiality In Pastaza Quichua, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This paper analyses the interactional and pragmatic effects of two evidential enclitics in the Pastaza Quichua language of Amazonian Ecuador. Attention is also given to represented discourse in a variety of genres. The overall goal is a better understanding of the perspectival encoding of experience through evidential enclitics and represented discourse, and the role of these devices in articulating concepts of sociability and politeness principles. A broader aim is to clarify how discourse practices making use of evidentiality and represented discourse may clarify Quichua peoples’ understandings of their relationships with each other and with non-human nature. Finally, this paper points …
