"How does one speak objectively, ifwe're talking about someone's comments about sexually assaulting someone? How am I supposed to be like, 'oh, you know, you gotta understand, he's just saying that.' When somebody's not able to condemn white supremacy stuff, how am I supposed to be like 'well, you know, you're entitled to your opinion on that.' Or infowars stuff, where we got people that are denying that shooting massacres actually happened. Like how do I objectively deal with this ifit's nonsense?" —Mr. Holton
In this qualitative study, I find that progressive public school teachers of AP Economics experience …

From The Margins To The Center: Queer And Trans Teachers Of Color In K-12 Public School, Esteban Cabrera-Duran , '18
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Interviews with nine self-identified queer and trans teachers of color (QTToC) address how teachers both work within and resist the reproductive function of schools. Findings suggest that QTToC enter the profession with a set of values and conunitments. The pedagogies of these teachers can have a trans formative effect on the academic outcomes of students and prepare them to be critical of ideologies and systems of oppression. To fulfill this role and conunitment, teachers must have the support of the school context and culture. This thesis adds to the growing body of literature on QTToC and presents a more optimistic …

Confidential Publics: Digital Reconciliation And Queer Muslim Identities, Mariam Mustafa
Confidential Publics: Digital Reconciliation And Queer Muslim Identities, Mariam Mustafa
Masters Theses
In this paper, I trouble constructions of community through exploring temporal spatial configurations of support for queer-identified Muslims living in America. I assert that when community is not something one can physically access, use of the internet to create temporary spaces of community is critical in assessing identity reconciliation between intersectional conflicting identity. As it relates to queer Muslims, where there is a distinct lack of public community, the level of crisis some individuals face is explored through their use of online vehicles to establish social support systems that would otherwise not be available. My paper provides a framework in …
Current Radiation Safety Practices Of United States Dental Hygienists, Kimberly Lintag
Current Radiation Safety Practices Of United States Dental Hygienists, Kimberly Lintag
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine licensed dental hygienists’ current radiation safety practices.
Methods: Data was collected with a 22 item, IRB exempt online survey administered to a sample of 1,500 U.S. dental hygienists who were subscribers of a professional journal. Questions focused on respondents’ use of ADA selection criteria guidelines, policies implemented by their dental practice, and hand-held portable x-ray device use and training. A response rate of 38% (N=566) was obtained. Cross tabulations were obtained using logistic regression and general linear models for significance at a 0.05 level.
Results: A majority of respondents had an …
Eighteenth-Century Forerunners Of Vatican Ii: Early Modern Catholic Reform And The Synod Of Pistoia, Shaun London Blanchard
Eighteenth-Century Forerunners Of Vatican Ii: Early Modern Catholic Reform And The Synod Of Pistoia, Shaun London Blanchard
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of "late Jansenism." Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda - such as an exaltation of …
Deviance Fluidity On The Urban Landscape: Graffiti And Street Art As Non-Normative Placemaking, Alyson M. Mabie
Deviance Fluidity On The Urban Landscape: Graffiti And Street Art As Non-Normative Placemaking, Alyson M. Mabie
Masters Theses
Graffiti is recognized as an illegal deviant act. Sociologically, deviance is defined by the audience perceiving the act, rather than inherent in the act itself. In this context, deviance is subjective and fluid. This paper explores the spectrum of graffiti from criminal vandalism to celebrated art form in the context of its placement on the urban landscape. The fluidity of deviance is reflected in the concentration of different types of graffiti in different locations. The spatial distribution of graffiti writing, street art, and the equally illegal guerrilla marketing stickers, which mimic graffiti placement and street art styles, were collected in …

A Qualitative Study Of Adult Perspectives Of Loyola Marymount’S Summer Arts Workshop, Colleen Stafford
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This research is a qualitative exploration of the impacts of Loyola Marymount’s Summer Arts Workshop from the perspective of the youth participant’s teachers and caregivers. The intention of this research was to compare findings in the literature of similar youth arts programs to LMU’s through examination of a previously unexplored perspective. Data was collected through an arts based focus group as well as paper-pencil questionnaires including both Likert scale and open ended questions. Themes emerged through thorough analysis of all data collected and presented both themes of specific program impacts and opportunities for future program improvements. The findings of this …

OBJECTIVE: In humans, the ontogeny of obesity throughout the life course and the genetics underlying it has been historically difficult to study. We compared, in a non-human primate model, the lifelong growth trajectories of obese and non-obese adults to assess the heritability of and map potential genomic regions implicated in growth and obesity.
STUDY POPULATION: A total of 905 African green monkeys, or vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) (472 females, 433 males) from a pedigreed captive colony. METHODS: We measured fasted body weight (BW), crown-to-rump length (CRL), body-mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) from 2000 to 2015. We used a …

Creating A Data Structure Of Culturally Relevant Literature For Use In Middle School, Courtney Ramirez
Creating A Data Structure Of Culturally Relevant Literature For Use In Middle School, Courtney Ramirez
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question for this capstone is: What tools will help teachers and students access culturally relevant classroom materials for middle school students? It reports on the process of one teacher creating a web-based data structure for categorizing books based on the following categories: race/ethnicity, gender/sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, and nationality. The literature review explores Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP), especially as it relates to literacy, and the need for diversity in young adult literature. The project is heavily influenced by Ladson-Billings’ ideas about culturally relevant teaching practices and literature. The methods used for the creation of the project are …

The Perceived Centrality Of Spirituality In Athletic Competition, Joel Perttula
The Perceived Centrality Of Spirituality In Athletic Competition, Joel Perttula
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Spirituality, while not visible, is a central component in athletic competition. This study examined the perceived centrality of spirituality in athletic competition among Christian athletes. To do so, a theological understanding of the image of God was developed and considered participant gender, ethnicity, student’s level of standing, preferred sport, and cultural environment associated with the preferred sport for the purpose of identifying the most robust, statistically significant correlate and predictor of the perceived centrality of spirituality in athletic competition. The quantitative study utilized survey research methodology. A total of 65 student-athletes were approached and the first 53 athletes who provided …
The Idea Of "The Criminal Justice System", Sara Mayeux
The Idea Of "The Criminal Justice System", Sara Mayeux
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The phrase "the criminal justice system " is ubiquitous in discussions of criminal law, policy, and punishment in the United States-so ubiquitous that, at least in colloquial use, almost no one thinks to question the phrase. However, this way of describing and thinking about police, courts, jails, and prisons, as a holistic "system, " became pervasive only in the 1960s. This essay contextualizes the idea of "the criminal justice system" within the longer history of systems theories more generally, drawing on recent scholarship in intellectual history and the history of science. The essay then recounts how that longer history converged, …
Principles And Practices For Motivating Youth For Scripture Literacy, Eric D. Rackley, John Hilton Iii
Principles And Practices For Motivating Youth For Scripture Literacy, Eric D. Rackley, John Hilton Iii
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Brother Howard enjoys teaching his students, and his students look forward to coming to class because they know they will learn important gospel truths. But there is a problem: students are not reading their scriptures as often or as carefully as they should. After careful consideration, Brother Howard decides to encourage students to complete their daily scripture reading by assigning course grades based, in part, on how often they read, and giving students daily quizzes that ask them to recall information from their reading. Brother Howard also plans a series of rewards if students complete their reading for a set …
The Heritage-Making Conundrum In Asian Cities: Real, Transformed And Imagined Legacies, David Ocon
The Heritage-Making Conundrum In Asian Cities: Real, Transformed And Imagined Legacies, David Ocon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The process of heritage-making is farfrom straightforward. Defining the meaning of heritage in young nations and citieswhere land availability is limited is a challenging exercise. It often crossesthe paths of history, religion, memory-shaping, development, andidentity-building. It requires fluent communication channels between civilsociety, local organisations and governments. Willingness to cooperate from allthe parties involved is essential; dialogue a must.In land-scarce or densely populated Asiancities, expansion and growth is colliding with the preservation of legacies, thepast and memory. This paper examines regional case studies from Hong Kong,Manila and Singapore, where preservation of cultural patrimony, development anddaily life follow conflicting paths. It sheds …

Humans Forget, Machines Remember: Artificial Intelligence And The Right To Be Forgotten, Eduard Fosch Villaronga, Peter Kieseberg, Tiffany Li
Faculty Scholarship
To understand the Right to be Forgotten in context of artificial intelligence, it is necessary to first delve into an overview of the concepts of human and AI memory and forgetting. Our current law appears to treat human and machine memory alike – supporting a fictitious understanding of memory and forgetting that does not comport with reality. (Some authors have already highlighted the concerns on the perfect remembering.) This Article will examine the problem of AI memory and the Right to be Forgotten, using this example as a model for understanding the failures of current privacy law to reflect the …

Gender And Food Access In Adams County: Food Provisioning, Identity Formation, And Survival, Emma E. Korowotny
Student Publications
This project analyzes food access issues in Adams County, specifically within the setting of South Central Community Action Programs and the Gleaning Project through the collection of individual testimonies. Budget, time, transportation, health, and household composition emerged as common themes that affect food access within this rural community and limit choice and agency, and also serve as a major influence in the process of food provisioning and identity formation, especially in terms of motherhood, parenting, and caregiving. In most cases, due to these systemic shortcomings, individuals and families navigated multiple solutions to these challenges in order to sustain themselves and …
Unmasking Hybridity In Popular Performance, Hannah M. Harder
Unmasking Hybridity In Popular Performance, Hannah M. Harder
Student Publications
This paper explores cultural hybridization in popular music and the eroticization of the exotic eastern aesthetic. Using musicology and anthropology as tools, the paper examines varying perspectives of the artists, audience and marginalized groups. Although cultural appropriation has been used recently as a blanket buzzword in mainstream dialogue, it does provide a platform to discuss complex issues on gender, race and sexuality that has been muddled by colonial mentalities.
Moving Beyond Gender Stereotypes: Reinterpreting Female Celtic Statues From Entremont, France, Kathleen A. Mcgurty
Moving Beyond Gender Stereotypes: Reinterpreting Female Celtic Statues From Entremont, France, Kathleen A. Mcgurty
Student Publications
In the field of archaeology, male bias has been prevalent in both theory and practice. Female Celtic statues from Entremont, France are an example of how this bias can negatively affect the study of past peoples. Male archaeologists who have excavated or studied the site of Entremont have given little attention to the female statues found on the site, despite being a unique find. The few interpretations that they did provide were sexist, and the female statues were treated as secondary to male statues, reflecting the perceived inferiority of women to men in ancient societies. This can lead to not …
