“Thy Kingdom Come”: Catholicism And The Nueva Canción, 1966-1982, Elizabeth Turnwald Apr 2018

“Thy Kingdom Come”: Catholicism And The Nueva Canción, 1966-1982, Elizabeth Turnwald

Honors Theses

Within Latin America’s tumultuous political atmosphere during the 1960s through the 1980s, a grassroots musical genre called the Nueva Canción emerged. Meaning “new song,” it sought to unify the poor and marginalized through a combination of folk influences, indigenous musical styles, and politically-charged lyrics. Although they achieved similar commercial success to U.S. contemporaries such as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and Joan Baez, the folkloristas [folksingers] of the Nueva Canción often incorporated references to and elements of Catholic liturgical practice. Considering the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and the advent of a Latin American Liberation Theology, the time was ripe …

The Misspent Youth Of South Dakota Native American Students: An Analysis Of The Gear Up Grant Program In South Dakota, Anna Madsen Apr 2018

The Misspent Youth Of South Dakota Native American Students: An Analysis Of The Gear Up Grant Program In South Dakota, Anna Madsen

Honors Thesis

The State of South Dakota has a significant educational achievement gap between Native American students and non-Native students. In 2005 and 2011, the State of South Dakota submitted successful applications to receive the federal education grant GEAR UP. The specific goal of the GEAR UP grant was to increase the number of Native American students who entered and succeeded in postsecondary education. After Scott Westerhuis tragically murdered his family and committed suicide in 2015, the conflicts of interest and mismanagement of the GEAR UP grant by the Mid-Central Educational Cooperative became apparent. The aim of this thesis is to define …

“The Moral Equivalent Of War”: William James’S Minor Variation On Common Themes, Marilyn Fischer Apr 2018

“The Moral Equivalent Of War”: William James’S Minor Variation On Common Themes, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Unlike other scholars who interpret William James’s “The Moral Equivalent of War” in light of the author’s other writings, I read the essay as James’s contribution to conversations being held within the pre-World War One international peace movement. The essay shares the vocabulary, images, and patterns of reasoning widely employed by others in the movement. James’s analysis of violence described a standard frame of mind at that time. Like many of his contemporaries, he assumed that war had contributed to social cohesion and strenuousness in the past, but that this was no longer the case. Like them, he assumed “civilized …

My Lover Is Mine And I Am His--The Grazer In The Lilies: A Philosophical-Literary Reading Of The Song Of Songs, Leslie Fuller Apr 2018

My Lover Is Mine And I Am His--The Grazer In The Lilies: A Philosophical-Literary Reading Of The Song Of Songs, Leslie Fuller

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the thesis that the Song of Songs is love poetry that portrays two lovers who are entirely dependent upon each other in constructing their self-identity. Examining the Song in this way illuminates the centrality of their relationship and the specific ways in which it contributes to the self-construction of each lover. The literary methodology of poetics with particular attention to dialogue serves as the backbone of the project. To this are added philosophical developments, primarily from Kenneth Gergen and Judith Butler, concerning the interpersonal construction of the self to further explore the intertwined lovers. The interpersonal characteristics …

Click, Clack, Moo Marxism: Recognizing Theoretical Frameworks, Lana Williams Apr 2018

Click, Clack, Moo Marxism: Recognizing Theoretical Frameworks, Lana Williams

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The challenge of engaging students in disciplinary theory has always been somewhat daunting for most professors. The introduction of theoretical concepts from primary readings is fundamental in this endeavor, but how do we get students to engage with the materials in a more critical and, in some instances, timely fashion? Critical literacy should go beyond primary literature and also be about questioning practices that keep particular structures of knowing, believing, and being in place. In practice, this can be accomplished through building critical literacy skills by recognizing theoretical frameworks in non-traditional contexts. The assignment provided here outlines one way in …

Science At Engineer Cantonment [Part 5], Hugh H. Genoways, Brett C. Ratcliffe Apr 2018

Science At Engineer Cantonment [Part 5], Hugh H. Genoways, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Long’s Expedition was the first party with trained scientists to explore the American West in the name of the United States government. Historians have not been particularly kind to the expedition. William Goetzmann described the party as “A curious cavalcade of disgruntled career officers, eccentric scientists, and artist-playboys, . . .” Hiram Chittenden believed that the expedition of 1819 had failed, and that “a small side show was organized for the season of 1820 in the form of an expedition to the Rocky Mountains.” However, recent papers by Genoways and Ratcliffe, and others conclude that both biologists and historians have …

Who’S Your Perfect Person? A Study About Dating And Dating Factors, Jessica Allen Apr 2018

Who’S Your Perfect Person? A Study About Dating And Dating Factors, Jessica Allen

Honors Thesis

This Honors Thesis discusses the historical and present-day patterns of dating and dating factors. Dating has evolved throughout the years, and the factors women seek in potential partners have also shifted. The question this Honors Thesis plans to examine is; what are the current factors women seek in potential partners, and what possibly could have caused the various shifts in dating factors. These questions are examined by researching historical surveys and patterns from the 1930s to present-day. Starting in 1930, the thesis looks at the factors women in college looked for in a potential partner. The goals of dating or …

Exploring The Relationship Between Students' Perceptions Of The Jesuit Charism And Students' Moral Judgement, Scott Swenson Apr 2018

Exploring The Relationship Between Students' Perceptions Of The Jesuit Charism And Students' Moral Judgement, Scott Swenson

Doctoral Dissertations

Jesuit education has long focused on developing leaders of conscience, competence, and compassion. There is a gap in the literature examining if aspects of the Jesuit charism influence moral development. The Ignatian Identity Survey (IGNIS), and the Defining Issues Test – 2 (DIT-2), were administered to seniors at an all-male Jesuit high school. The IGNIS was used to explore students’ perceptions of five aspects of the Jesuit charism: 1) Openness to growth and educational excellence (OGEE), 2) Religious education and formation (REF), 3) Collaboration (COL), 4) Faith and justice (F&J), and 5) Active Reflection (AR). The DIT-2 was used to …

Expressive Enlightenment: Subjectivity And Solidarity In Daniel Garrison Brinton, Franz Boas, And Carlos Montezuma, R. Arvo Carr

Publications and Research

This chapter explores the expressivism of Franz Boas’s anthropological and linguistic thought, and situates Boas in a late-nineteenth- century cultural and intellectual milieu in which the theory and practice of self-expression took on unprecedented significance. Boas’s expressivism had deep roots in German intellectual culture, but was also influenced in surprising ways by his experiences in the Americas, in particular by the “philosophy of expression” espoused by Daniel Garrison Brinton, to whom Boas paid tribute in a 1899 obituary. Yet the history of Boas’s expressivism goes beyond intellectual history and the transmission of scholarly theories among European and Euro-American academics; for …

Exploring Multi-Sensory Curriculum Development: Grades 3-5 Science In A Virtual Environment, Terilynn Stackhouse

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The capstone thesis uses a qualitative research approach to explore the question: What are virtual tools and multi-sensory strategies that can be integrated into curriculum development to support the engagement of learners in science in grades 3-5 in virtual learning environments? The author chose this topic to find and to apply multi-sensory strategies, including technology-rich approaches, in virtual education, and developed a new curriculum unit using current sensory-rich technologies. The goal is to enhance and enrich curriculum, and thereby to increase student engagement in the sciences. Applying these tools in virtual education and using multi-sensory approaches can lead to new …
