Many Faiths, One Beginning: Universality In Norse, Maya, Greek And Celtic Faiths
Many Faiths, One Beginning: Universality In Norse, Maya, Greek And Celtic Faiths
Symposium of Student Scholars
Numerous religious faiths have pervaded the world for much of known human history, but these belief systems often have significant variation in their core tenets, especially with those that have no contact. Religions which are in close proximity to one another tend to have some degree of syncretism, such as having comparable deities, due to having some transmission of their cultures. One group of similar base beliefs is the Indo-Europeans, with its members having been studied for parallels before. To contend with these previous studies, this project will look at the beliefs of the Norse, Greek, and Celtic cultures, all …

Kent State And Berkeley: Revolt And Re-Appropriation Of The Multiversity In The Spring Of 1970, Spencer Schwerdtfeger
Voces Novae
During the sixties and seventies, the American university underwent a radical transformation, forever altering the relationship between the students and the administration. This paper seeks to examine the relationship between students and the university at two large state universities, Berkeley and Kent State, and to examine how students at both institutions sought to reaffirm their power and re-appropriate the university in an increasingly depersonalized educational setting. The paper, which focuses on the spring of 1970 and the nation-wide student uprisings, looks at how student activists had both schools, utilized protests, writings, and other means to try and wrest power from …

To do this, librarians are going beyond the numbers, and thinking outside the box to …
Uncomfortable "Comfort Women:" Examining Shame Culture And The Internal Conflict Between Japanese-Americans And Korean-Americans Regarding The Comfort Women Issue, Janice Lee
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
Women's rights are human rights that should be emphasized across the globe. The sexual slavery system that the Japanese Imperial army put in place during World War II, commonly known as 'comfort women,' is now getting international attention. 50 years after the war ended, survivors and former 'comfort women' are now raising their voice and telling their stories. This research paper focuses on the issue of shame culture and how it drives the internal conflict between Japanese-Americans and Korean-Americans today and how this long conflict effects generations today.

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Cultural Expectations And Family Obligations On Latina Women Attending College, Valeria Bielma
M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers
This paper explores the existing research involving the cultural roles, expectations and family obligations that may be affecting Latina college students. Latina higher education attainment rates are significantly lower compared to their female counterparts and this paper seeks to explore how strong collectivist orientations may be contributing to this achievement disparity. Familismo is a cultural value that emphasizes loyalty, reciprocity and solidarity, involves strong identification and attachment to the family, and requires members to prioritize family. Latinas may be prioritizing family obligations or fulfilling cultural expectations over school responsibilities, which could lead to the decision to stop pursuing a higher …

Culture Fever: Utopianism And Pragmatism In Chinese Intellectuals' Search For Modernization, Gao Yijia, Hu Pengbo, Jacob Waldor, Wang Zelin
2018 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
Situating the 1980s Cultural Fever in a global westernization context and as one of the three major waves of the Chinese intellectual movement in the last two centuries, this paper attempts to analyze the complexities and nuances of the cultural reckoning process in the mid-1980s by examining how such process is manifested in academia, a magazine called Reading, a TV-series documentary titled River Elegy (Heshang), and movie Red Sorghum (Honggaoliang). Although different in their schools of affiliation, areas of expertise, and intended audience, in hope of a shared utopian future, Chinese intellectuals in the 1980s carried out their self-proclaimed duty …

From Sezs To Thailand 4.0: Geopolitics Of Borderlands In The Thai State’S Vision, Phianphachong Intarat
From Sezs To Thailand 4.0: Geopolitics Of Borderlands In The Thai State’S Vision, Phianphachong Intarat
Forest and Society
This article uses the case of Thailand’s two economic policies –the border Special Economic Zones and the Thailand 4.0 model, to explore geopolitics of the Thai-Burmese borderland. It also discuss a theoretical gap in accounting the ways in which the state engages with transnational flows of capital and peoples, and proposes to use the concept of ‘border partial citizenship’ to bridge this gap. It argues that the shift in Thailand’s economic policy portrayed the different ways in which the Thai state envisaged its geographical territory in relations to capital and human mobility. In the border SEZ project, the Thai borderland …

Pit Features: A View From Grand Island, Michigan, Emily R. Bartz
Theses and Dissertations
Serving a multitude of functions from subterrestrial cavities of storage, basins for cooking, to vessels that securely hold pounds of rice allowing the grains to be danced upon to thresh, pit features are one of North Americas most common archaeological feature. These constructions are dug to fit a diversity of needs based on the people who manufacture them. By understanding the distinct function(s) a pit or group of pit features played at a site-level, the needs of the people who inhabited that landscape are better understood. The nature of a pit feature is to store something or process a food …

Rubber Plantation Labor And Labor Movements As Rubber Prices Decrease In Southern Thailand, Uraiwan Tongkaemkaew, Bénédicte Chambon
Forest and Society
A decrease in rubber prices can initiate labor migration trends from rubber production to industrial or service sectors, which could further cause labor shortages in rubber production. This case was not studied in the different communities with a long history of rubber such as the center city of southern Thailand. This study analyzes the source of labor and movement of laborers working in rubber plantations in the context of decreasing rubber prices. We selected 3 representative areas, namely rural, suburban and urban communities in Hat Yai district, Songkhla province. Owners of rubber holdings were the target group for the survey, …

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This article examines the journey of Central American and Mexican undocumented immigrants and the realities they had to face through written poetry. By examining this phenomenon, I explain the historical context of what caused the wave of Central American and Mexican immigration to the United States from the 1980s to 2000s. In addition, I focus on the experience of the undocumented immigrant through poetry that was made by both migrants and poets. By focusing on this theme we can understand the root of this migration and its social and economic consequences such as Femicide (violence against women), poverty, and an …
Married Love And Responsible Parenthood: Changing The Discussion On The Ethics Of Birth Control, Hannah Renner
Married Love And Responsible Parenthood: Changing The Discussion On The Ethics Of Birth Control, Hannah Renner
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
The current framework in which The Catholic Church discusses birth control originates within a sexual ethic based on rules Christians are obligated to follow. After a careful, internal critique of the encyclical, there needs to be a change in this framework so that Christian sexual ethics is less focused on the rules and more focused on the values which Humanae Vitae embodies. These values are presently described as the unitive and procreative ends of marriage. However, with a transition from a rule-based sex ethic to a value-based sex ethic, these ends of marriage can be redefined in terms of married …
