Tween Tourists: Children And Decision-Making., Bodil Stilling Blichfeldt, Bettina Pederson, Anders Johansen, Line Hansen May 2018

Tween Tourists: Children And Decision-Making., Bodil Stilling Blichfeldt, Bettina Pederson, Anders Johansen, Line Hansen

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Research suggests that children influence family vacation decision-making. However, with few exceptions parents act as respondents in studies of family vacation decision-making and furthermore, children’s role is often defined as a rather passive one. Thus, it is often assumed that although children might explicate wishes pertaining to holidays, they generally submit to whatever choices their parents make. In recent years, marketing researchers have taken a keen interest in the so-called ‘tweens’, people who are 8 to 12 years old and in between childhood and the teenage years. One key finding of research on tweens is that tweens are consumers in …

Unsettling Boundaries: (Pre-)Digital Fat Activism, Fatphobia, And Enclave Ambivalence, Sarah E. Bolden May 2018

Unsettling Boundaries: (Pre-)Digital Fat Activism, Fatphobia, And Enclave Ambivalence, Sarah E. Bolden

Theses - ALL

Grounded in public sphere and platform theory, this thesis explores networked fat activism on Tumblr. The platform is often described as an enclave space: it is a welcoming and secluded site where marginalized youths can interact. Yet fatphobic antagonism frequently disrupts Tumblr’s fat activist network. I argue that the presence of fatphobia on a site described in such utopian terms as Tumblr is unsurprising when considering two factors: platform affordances that de-incentivize trolling from “outsiders,” but do not prevent active Tumblr users from interacting with fat activists; and historical conditions that mark fatness as an ideological “threat” that needs to …

Redefining Home: Understanding Congolese Refugee Community Organization In The Greater Boston Area, Cameron Macpherson May 2018

Redefining Home: Understanding Congolese Refugee Community Organization In The Greater Boston Area, Cameron Macpherson

Theses - ALL

For refugees that have been resettled into hostland nations, the creation of formal refugee community organizations (RCOs) dedicated to assisting immigrants represents a grassroots response to the stresses of migration. Despite their importance to the lives of refugees, RCOs have received little scholarly attention in the United States. Even less attention has been dedicated to studying the role of RCOs for African peoples. This research seeks to address these gaps in scholarship by analyzing community understandings of one RCO, the Congolese Development Center, among the Congolese refugee community located in the North Shore region of Massachusetts. Using qualitative ethnographic data, …

Application Of Game Theory In Studying Subcontractors’ Cooperation In Construction Projects - Joint Resource Management, Reihaneh Samsami May 2018

Application Of Game Theory In Studying Subcontractors’ Cooperation In Construction Projects - Joint Resource Management, Reihaneh Samsami

Theses - ALL

Resource management is one of the most significant roles of every project manager in today’s highly competitive construction industry. One solution to reduce costs of resources is to manage them jointly. Joint resource management is based on cooperation between subcontractors who are seeking a win-win resolution. It is an attempt to schedule the project tasks, enabling subcontractors to optimally utilize resources and minimize their idle times.

Cooperative game theory, describing a series of moves leading to an integrative conclusion, is a powerful tool for studying cooperation between subcontractors. Construction projects are not too different from real games. By using game …

Alaska Native Scholars: A Mixed Methods Investigation Of Factors Influencing Phd Attainment, Alberta J. Jones

Faculty and Staff

This study entitled, "Alaska Native Scholars: A Mixed Methods Investigation of Factors Influencing PhD Attainment," investigates the contributing factors influencing the attainment of PhD degrees by Alaska Natives. Originating from a cross-section of rural and urban Alaska communities and tribal ethnicities, this group of scholars attended graduate schools throughout the country. Today many of these PhDs work in universities, conduct research, and advocate for Indigenous people in various leadership roles, both in and outside of Alaska. This study's assumption is these PhD graduates have gained valuable lessons along their path to success and an examination of these factors is relevant …

Adhd Symptoms, Impulsivity And Entrepreneurial Action Three Essays, Wei Yu May 2018

Adhd Symptoms, Impulsivity And Entrepreneurial Action Three Essays, Wei Yu

Dissertations - ALL

Anecdotal evidence of successful entrepreneurs with ADHD, along with books on the strengths of ADHD individuals, have drawn people’s attention towards the potential benefits of this mental disorder. Instead of viewing those individuals as inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive, the very characteristics may become assets in certain environments where creativity, quick action and experimentation are needed. Entrepreneurship represents such an environment that has been long recognized by scholars and practitioners alike. First, entrepreneurship is an uncertain journey full of obstacles, which requires potential entrepreneurs to overcome the fear and worry and resolve the uncertainty through entrepreneurial actions. Second, compared with existing …

The Setaweet Way: An Articulation Of Ethiopian Feminism, Samrawit Alemayehu May 2018

The Setaweet Way: An Articulation Of Ethiopian Feminism, Samrawit Alemayehu

Theses - ALL

In Ethiopia, women’s organizing and mobilization is not new, however, outward claims of feminism and vocal allegiance to feminist ideals is a movement that has recently taken traction within the country. Despite following its own timeline, this resurgence in Ethiopia also takes place amongst the feminist movements found in the different nations on the continent. In Ethiopia, this contemporary iteration connects to broader discussions of the significant factors of migration, immigration, globalization, capitalism, modernity, and the new technological age. Subsequently, most of the scholarship pertaining to women’s socioeconomic issues takes the cultural or anthropological mode of exploration. More recently, scholars …

Insist, Persist, And Resist: Feminist Activism And Political Violence In Antioquia, Colombia, Carolina Arango-Vargas May 2018

Insist, Persist, And Resist: Feminist Activism And Political Violence In Antioquia, Colombia, Carolina Arango-Vargas

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation presents a political ethnography of the dynamics of feminist activism among organized mujeres populares –working-class and rural women– in the province of Antioquia, Colombia, and sheds light on the development of political agency and transformation of subjectivity. The study investigates how feminist frameworks enable grassroots women to combat the simultaneous effects of violence, poverty, and trauma by analyzing the processes of collaboration between grassroots and professional feminist organizations and the effects of political violence in their communities. Drawing on political anthropology and transnational feminist scholarship, the dissertation examines these processes against the backdrop of a regional hegemonic project …

Religion In Contemplative Studies, Daniel J. Moseson May 2018

Religion In Contemplative Studies, Daniel J. Moseson

Dissertations - ALL

This project is about the new field of contemplative studies, a field that seeks to use “contemplative” practices, derived mostly (though not entirely) from religious traditions in academic settings, prominently including college pedagogy. First, this project seeks to understand how contemplative studies advocates persuade others (and themselves) that what they are doing is not “religion;” that is, how do they define "religion" in order to situate their own work as non-religious academic inquiry? Second, in the course of my textual and ethnographic research on contemplative studies, it has become apparent that this field adds to the growing rebuttal of religious …

To Plow A Lonely Furrow: Indigenismo And Mapuche Politics In Chile, 1920-1960, Henry John Stegeman May 2018

To Plow A Lonely Furrow: Indigenismo And Mapuche Politics In Chile, 1920-1960, Henry John Stegeman

Dissertations - ALL

This study examines Mapuche political organization in Chile from 1920-1960 through the lens of transnational indigenismo. In that period, politicians, academics and social reformers across the Americas were questioning how to incorporate indigenous populations into modern national states. While many historical accounts of similar phenomena in other countries have drawn categorical distinctions between indigenismo (as a movement led by white elites) and indigenous activism (led by Indians themselves), this work places the two phenomena side-by-side to explore connections between them. That approach shows that collaboration, periodic conflict and strategic alliance making were important components of indigenous politics in Chile. It …

Aging In Harmony: Creating Culturally Appropriate Systems Of Health Care For Aging American Indian/Alaska Natives, Mehgan Gallagher, Bette Jacobs, Nicole Heydt May 2018

Aging In Harmony: Creating Culturally Appropriate Systems Of Health Care For Aging American Indian/Alaska Natives, Mehgan Gallagher, Bette Jacobs, Nicole Heydt

Journal of Gender, Race & Justice

Aging is inevitable—it happens to all of us—but it is not a homogeneous experience. Aging people are among the most vulnerable populations in the world, and thus deserve our care and compassion. This is particularly true of aging American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), who face unique barriers to accessing health care due to geographic constraints, language and cultural barriers, and a lack of infrastructure and resource support. This article examines the availability, accessibility, and acceptability of health care services for aging AI/ANs, with a focus on culturally appropriate care and the role of community health representatives in communities with …

Geographic Variation In Sex Ratios Of The Us Immigrant Population: Identifying Sources Of Difference, Erin Trouth Hofmann, E. Miranda Reiter May 2018

Geographic Variation In Sex Ratios Of The Us Immigrant Population: Identifying Sources Of Difference, Erin Trouth Hofmann, E. Miranda Reiter

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper describes geographic variation in the sex composition of the foreign-born population in the US since 1990, and uses Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition to identify key sources of variation in regional sex ratios. We use data from the 1990 and 2000 US Censuses, and from the 2007–2011 American Community Survey, to create estimates of the size and characteristics of foreign-born populations at the level of Consistent Public-Use Microdata Areas. We find substantial local- and region-level variation in population sex ratios, with the highest sex ratios in the South and Midwest. This variation is partly explained by differences in the age- and …

Challenges And Solutions For National Park Service Civil War Sites Working With African American Communities, Rolonda Teal May 2018

Challenges And Solutions For National Park Service Civil War Sites Working With African American Communities, Rolonda Teal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this project were to determine the ways in which National Park Service (NPS) sites with a Civil War component are connecting or not with African American visitors and non-visitors. In order to meet the overarching objectives, two approaches were used which consisted of direct contact with the NPS sites and administering a site-specific questionnaire. Multiple attempts were made to contact 81 national parks, monuments, battlefields, historic sites, and other type park designations. Of the 81 sites, 55 national park units responded to an eight plus two sub-question questionnaire. Interpreters at each site were asked about interpretive programming …

Las Montañas Desheredadas: Lo Fantástico Y Las Hurdes (Luis Buñuel, 1933) Como Docuficción, Mario Sánchez Gumiel May 2018

Un Solo Pie Adentro: Sense Of Community Of Puerto Ricans In Miami, Andrea C. Ruiz-Sorrentini May 2018

Un Solo Pie Adentro: Sense Of Community Of Puerto Ricans In Miami, Andrea C. Ruiz-Sorrentini

Open Access Theses

Transnational migrants’ identities are configured in relationship to more than one nation and are continuously pulled in different directions as old and new members of multiple communities wrapped in a single experience (Aranda, Hughes, & Sabogal, 2014). Particularly for Puerto Ricans in the United States (U.S.), symbolic and cultural bonds are linked to their communities on the Island which require us to expand traditional notions of sense of community as a process and as an enactment of connections between people and transnational social spaces. Therefore, this study explores the ways Puerto Ricans living in Miami, Florida define the concept of …

Invisible In 'The Archive': Librarians, Archivists, And The Caswell Test, Bridget Whearty May 2018

Invisible In 'The Archive': Librarians, Archivists, And The Caswell Test, Bridget Whearty

English, General Literature, and Rhetoric Faculty Scholarship

This presentation, "Invisible in 'The Archive': Archivists, Librarians, and The Caswell Test," was given at the 53rd International Congress for Medieval Studies, on May 11, 2018. It argues that medievalists, and humanities scholars more broadly, have erred in writing and theorizing about "the archive" as an abstract, depopulated space, untouched by human labor and laborers. Building on the work of M. L. Caswell, Eira Tansey, Amy Hildreth Chen, Myron Groover, and other scholars of library and information sciences, it proposes that humanities scholars adopt what I call "The Caswell Test."

Based on the famous "Bechdel Test" for gender representation in …

Speaking Within Subalternity: A Critical Analysis Of Performance Artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena And The Use Of Strategic Essentialism, Paola Martell May 2018

Speaking Within Subalternity: A Critical Analysis Of Performance Artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena And The Use Of Strategic Essentialism, Paola Martell

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project investigates the work of performance artist Guillermo Gomez-Pefia through a postcolonial discourse. This project will be looking at three of the artist's pieces and proposes that though seen as an abstract or avant-garde performer, Gomez-Pefia's these pieces provide a platform for the oppressed who cannot speak for themselves due to hegemony - the subaltern. In the context of Gomez-Pefia's performance art, this theory provides a postcolonial discourse on notions such as hybridity, borders, transculturalism, and other elements of identities found in lafrontera. Ultimately, this project finds that though the subaltern cannot speak, it is through Gomez-Pefia's use of …

Fostering Peace And Leadership: A Project For The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, Tomo Brown May 2018

Fostering Peace And Leadership: A Project For The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit, Tomo Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Black Mambas are members of a majority-female anti-poaching unit in South Africa that preserves wildlife in the world’s most targeted site for rhinoceros poaching. Despite the Black Mambas’ successes, the organization’s director has expressed concerns of a potential leadership issue in the unit, for which he seeks to identify the source and resolve accordingly. To assist in realizing these efforts, the researchers of this project traveled to South Africa and conducted work analysis interviews with 18 of the 34 members of the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data on participants’ perceptions of cultural …
