Steve Mccurry In India: A Balanced Approach To A Complicated Country, Sam Taylor May 2018

Steve Mccurry In India: A Balanced Approach To A Complicated Country, Sam Taylor

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Steve McCurry has worked as a National Geographic photographer for over thirty years and has captured some of his most important images in India. These two photographic narratives—National Geographic, often criticized for its exotic portrayals of other countries, and India, long subject to Eurocentric perspectives and historicizing—frame McCurry’s effort to present the human condition in the far corners of the world. McCurry exploits these tensions as he seeks a more truthful, accurate, and ultimately complex representation of India and its people. This paper analyzes two of McCurry’s most well-known photographs—Dust Storm (1983) and Holi Man (1996)—arguing that …

Gendered Reproductive Negotiation And Family Formation: Latino/A Parents And Voluntarily Childless Couples In Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, Jessica Lott May 2018

Gendered Reproductive Negotiation And Family Formation: Latino/A Parents And Voluntarily Childless Couples In Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, Jessica Lott

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation explores tensions between the empirical reality that Latino/a birth rates have been slowing in the United States since the Great Recession in 2007 and American discourse that presumes Latinos/as are a fairly homogenous group with “excessively” high fertility rates. This study is an intervention in the literature on Latino/a reproduction that assumes large family size as well as the literature on voluntarily childless couples, who are generally assumed to be Anglo in the American context. I explore these tensions with the case study of middle-class heterosexual Latino/a couples in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. I compare voluntarily childless Latinos/as with …

Treehouses: Civilizing The Wildness Of Men And Nature, Courtney Mckinney May 2018

Treehouses: Civilizing The Wildness Of Men And Nature, Courtney Mckinney

English Undergraduate Distinction Projects

In this paper, I explore how treehouses operate symbolically in tandem with culture. Through an analysis of British and American print culture, I argue that the treehouse building project became bound to boyhood at the turn of the twentieth century as the naturalist movement spread and youth organizations embraced treehouses as part of their vision for the development of boys. Parents and youth leaders intend for treehouse projects to build self-reliance, independence, imagination, and courage in their boys. Congruously, this activity associated with a child’s personal growth takes place in an actual growing organism. I analyze how treehouses juxtapose humans …

Examining Ritual In Dance/Movement Therapy, Jessica Michele Flores May 2018

Examining Ritual In Dance/Movement Therapy, Jessica Michele Flores

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Ritual practices have long been a part of numerous cultures’ history as mind-body actions performed for healing. Modern day rituals can be observed in baptisms, weddings, or funerals. Rituals have also been adapted into various psychotherapy approaches as effective, time-limited transformative additions through Van Gennep’s transition phases among varying populations. Ritual and dance/movement therapy are established as effective healing processes through similar concepts including sociality, dance, non-verbal communication and being body-based approaches. This literature review revealed the inner workings of ritual performance and dance/movement therapy through neuroscience. This literature review intends to present relevant research on the unique molding qualities …

Circus Arts As Expressive Arts Therapy, Anna Meilman May 2018

Circus Arts As Expressive Arts Therapy, Anna Meilman

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This capstone thesis investigates therapeutic benefits of circus arts, such as juggling, trapeze, acrobatics, and more, in the context of expressive arts therapy. Circus arts are inherently interdisciplinary, combining numerous creative modalities together, which makes them ripe for incorporating into intermodal expressive therapy. Likewise, the field of expressive arts therapy was built on a foundation of drawing in diverse perspectives and theories. In this paper, circus interventions are examined through the framework of three methods of engaging in creative therapies, which include arts as healing, arts as therapy, and arts in therapy. Literature reviewed on the subject includes history and …

Dance Movement Therapy With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program: A Method For Engagement, Claude Michelle Aubourg May 2018

Dance Movement Therapy With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program: A Method For Engagement, Claude Michelle Aubourg

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Therapeutic engagement during adolescence can be a major challenge in adolescent mental health. Research has indicated therapeutic techniques designed for engaging clients are often ineffective for adolescents because adolescents bring distinctive qualities to the therapy process that differentiate them from other therapy populations. There is also limited research showing effectiveness of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) with the adolescent population. This capstone will present an adaptable method utilizing dance/movement therapy interventions with participants ages 12-17 in a Partial Hospital Program. The objective of this project was to examine how DMT can improve engagement in treatment with adolescents in a partial hospital program …

An Identity Healing: Socialization And African-Centered Practices With At-Risk Youth, Jessica Shabazz May 2018

An Identity Healing: Socialization And African-Centered Practices With At-Risk Youth, Jessica Shabazz

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

African-Centered practices are being regarded as valuable therapeutic healing methods within the African-diaspora. However, there is limited research that examines the propitious advantages and psychotherapeutic use of Afrocentric movement of two very distinctive, yet possible complementary systems, the Katherine Dunham technique and Kemetic Yoga. The research available on these African-based movement practices recognizes them as holistic and encompassing a mind/body/soul connection. Ritualistic practices in counseling remains a growing interest to mental health practitioners of all cultures, to ensure that clients are provided with an experience of client-centered psychotherapy. Therapeutic African-centered practices align with Carl Rogers’ person-centered approach and the psychotherapeutic …

Discovering How Dance/Movement Therapy And Movement-Based Therapies Aid Children Experiencing Embodied Grief, Laura Remillard May 2018

Discovering How Dance/Movement Therapy And Movement-Based Therapies Aid Children Experiencing Embodied Grief, Laura Remillard

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Current studies in children’s grief and bereavement suggest that creative arts therapies support children through their healing process after experiencing the loss of a loved one. However, there is not much research to support the use of dance/movement therapy (DMT) or movement-based therapies with this specific population. This literature review explored children’s grief and bereavement and focused specifically on embodied grief--how and where grief is held in the physical body. Furthermore, this literature review expanded more on the use of DMT and movement-based therapies with children experiencing embodied grief, as well as expanded upon body-based approaches to help these individuals …

Make America Christian Again: Christian Nationalism And Voting For Donald Trump In The 2016 Presidential Election, Andrew L. Whitehead, Samuel L. Perry, Joseph O. Baker May 2018

Make America Christian Again: Christian Nationalism And Voting For Donald Trump In The 2016 Presidential Election, Andrew L. Whitehead, Samuel L. Perry, Joseph O. Baker

ETSU Faculty Works

Why did Americans vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential election? Social scientists have proposed a variety of explanations, including economic dissatisfaction, sexism, racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia. The current study establishes that, independent of these influences, voting for Trump was, at least for many Americans, a symbolic defense of the United States’ perceived Christian heritage. Data from a national probability sample of Americans surveyed soon after the 2016 election shows that greater adherence to Christian nationalist ideology was a robust predictor of voting for Trump, even after controlling for economic dissatisfaction, sexism, anti-black prejudice, anti-Muslim refugee attitudes, and anti-immigrant …

Bladelet Polish: A Lithic Analysis Of Spracklen ( 33 Gr 1585 ), An Upland Hopewell Campsite, Tyler R. E. Heneghan May 2018

Bladelet Polish: A Lithic Analysis Of Spracklen ( 33 Gr 1585 ), An Upland Hopewell Campsite, Tyler R. E. Heneghan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis builds upon recent investigations at Spracklen (33GR1585), a small upland site in Greene County, Ohio. The presence of non-local cherts, bladelets, and bladelet cores indicates a Middle Woodland Ohio Hopewell occupation. Raw material sourcing, debitage analyses, and a use-wear analysis uncovered that Spracklen functioned as a logistical hunting campsite. Its people utilized bladelets for butchery and hide-working processes. This information provides new insights into Hopewellian life in the uplands and its place within Hopewell community organization.

Student Perceptions Of Social Justice: Assessing Outcomes Related To An Undergraduate Diversity Course At A Predominantly White Institution, Kelyn Rola

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

Many universities include diversity requirements in their curricula, yet whether students benefit equally from participation in these courses is unclear. The present study investigated the relationship between a diversity course and students’ perceptions of social justice at a predominantly White institution. Perceptions were assessed using the Social Justice Scale (SJS), which included four subscales related to attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention to engage in social justice. Results of a paired samples t-test demonstrated that White students’ total SJS and perceived control significantly increased from pre- to post-course. Likewise, Hispanic students’ total SJS and subjective norms significantly increased …

Life Or Death And Other False Dichotomies: A Theology Of Hospice, Kayla Stock May 2018

Life Or Death And Other False Dichotomies: A Theology Of Hospice, Kayla Stock

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Feelings of fear and failure are often ascribed to death and dying; hospice offers a new way forward. This paper considers fear of death from a personal and evolutionary psychological perspective, then branching into the ways fear of death and death anxiety are made manifest in the health care system. Within the health care system, in particular the biomedical model of health care, death is construed as the enemy, the ultimate mark of failure. In one sense, death is fundamentally unknown, and is therefore naturally fear-inducing. Simultaneously, death is also both singularly and universally knowable; it is the only thing …

Restaurants And Relationships: Varied Experiences With Celiac Disease, Rose Letsinger, Elizabeth L. Stoeger May 2018

Restaurants And Relationships: Varied Experiences With Celiac Disease, Rose Letsinger, Elizabeth L. Stoeger

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

During the summer, we conducted interviews for Professor Hillary Crane with people who had either celiac disease or gluten intolerance. It quickly became apparent that people experience celiac disease in vastly different ways. We cover these varying experiences in terms of symptoms, eating at restaurants, and personal relationships. There are common symptoms associated with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, but most people have just one or a set few of these symptoms. Due to varying symptoms and severity of them, there is no definitive celiac symptom or experience. This is true for social events involving food and for personal relationships. …

Community Engagement Through Academic Museums: A Case Study Of The Linfield Anthropology Museum, Zoya Miller May 2018

Community Engagement Through Academic Museums: A Case Study Of The Linfield Anthropology Museum, Zoya Miller

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

This study investigates how small academic museums, like the Linfield Anthropology Museum, interact and engage with their community. A chronological approach was used, where the way that the museums interacted with the community over time was analyzed, as well as interviews with people involved in the museum, and their perspective on the changes in the museum. This study focused on four exhibits and the shifts in the location of the museum. The museum’s move to a more open, decentralized space created new opportunities for both the museum and its community.

The shift to a more decentralized, open exhibit space has …

A Blessed Event: How Intended Parents Conceptualize Transnational Surrogacy, Elizabeth L. Stoeger May 2018

A Blessed Event: How Intended Parents Conceptualize Transnational Surrogacy, Elizabeth L. Stoeger

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

This study analyzes the language intended parents (IP) use when they disclose their plans to have a child through surrogacy to their friends and family. Through narrative interviews and content analysis of Facebook posts, blog, and chat forum posts, I found that many of the IP narratives, both online and in-person, utilized animal metaphors in explaining surrogacy to family members and young children. Two other elements also emerged: first, that it was important not only what the IPs said when they shared their decision to have a child through surrogacy but also when. Most IPs sought advice as to when …

Relational Spirituality: An Opportunity For Social Work In Long-Term Care, Ann M. Callahan May 2018

Relational Spirituality: An Opportunity For Social Work In Long-Term Care, Ann M. Callahan

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Aim

Sandage and Shults (2007) suggest that “all spirituality can be viewed as relational” (p. 263). Likewise, according to Heyse-Moore (1996), “we exist to relate to each other and if we do not our spirit dries up within us like a desert” (p. 307). Spirituality reflects our “innate human yearning for meaning through intra-, inter-, and transpersonal connectedness” (Belcher & Griffiths, 2005, p. 272). If spirituality is the experience of meaningful relationships, then it is important to understand what relationships are meaningful to clients. These relationships are particularly important in long-term care.

Background

Long-term care involves a network of relationships …

Currents Of Consumption: How National Narratives Of Japanese Cuisine Collide With Localized Forms Of Sushi In Northern California, John Ostermiller May 2018

Currents Of Consumption: How National Narratives Of Japanese Cuisine Collide With Localized Forms Of Sushi In Northern California, John Ostermiller

Master's Projects and Capstones

This paper examines how national narratives of Japanese cuisine collide with the expectations, preferences, and perceptions of American consumers (particularly Northern California). The global economy has benefited the circulation of positive images of Japan managed by the Japanese government, but the commercialization of Japanese cuisine is also at odds with government efforts. In Japan, sushi is often synonymous with nigirizushi: sliced seafood and a daub of wasabi atop vinegared rice. As part of Japan’s washoku tradition, this singular image of sushi (allegedly) reflects the deepest essence of Japanese cultural sensibilities tied to simplicity, perfection, and nature. But in America, consumers’ …

起死回生(Resuscitation): Japan's Search For Machines And Their Meanings, Justin P. Mcdonnell

Master's Projects and Capstones

Japan’s lost decade(s) ushered in a new era of economic and societal malaise, marked by a shrinking population, an increased proportion of elderly people, inequality, neo-nationalism(s), uncertainty, and isolation. This project seeks to understand how Japan is trying to address these issues and reconstruct itself from the lost decade(s) with the use of artificial intelligence (jinkou chihou) and robotics along with the societal implications of this technology. This interdisciplinary research utilizes innovative, historical narratives (Morris-Suzuki,1988, Hornyak 2006), and the socio-cultural milieu of Japan and its traditions (Allison 2013; Katsuno 2010) to further appreciate and acknowledge Japanese perspectives and …

Social Play Predicts Docility In Juvenile Ground Squirrels, James Hurst-Hopf, Scott L. Nunes May 2018

Social Play Predicts Docility In Juvenile Ground Squirrels, James Hurst-Hopf, Scott L. Nunes

Undergraduate Honors Theses

We evaluated the hypothesis that social play behavior influences the development of temperament in young animals, using docility as a measure of temperament. We observed the play behavior of juvenile Belding’s ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi) during the developmental period in which play primarily occurs, and conducted behavioral tests measuring docility at the beginning and end of the play interval. Tests involved handling squirrels and recording their responses. Body mass was a reliable predictor of docility at the beginning of the play period. Rates of social play and maximum distances traveled from the natal burrow during the play interval …

This paper discusses the expansion of Oceania through a Marshallese indigenous lens as a focal point. It explains that decolonizing methodologies allows reclaiming of space for mental liberation and reassurement of constitutional rights. It highlights similar occurrences of decolonization practices meeting resistance in the 21st century all while strengthening the human right argument that no human deserves any less than their fellow human brothers and sisters. It argues that an indigenous imagery can only be viewed through an indigenous lens where the researches’ level of purity is retained and unfiltered. It nevertheless argues that Marshallese ethnolinguistics reveal the same cultural …
