Stigma At Every Turn: Health Services Experiences Among People Who Inject Drugs, Catherine E. Paquette, Jennifer L. Syvertsen, Robin A. Pollini
Stigma At Every Turn: Health Services Experiences Among People Who Inject Drugs, Catherine E. Paquette, Jennifer L. Syvertsen, Robin A. Pollini
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Background—People who inject drugs (PWID) encounter varying forms of stigma in health services contexts, which can contribute to adverse outcomes. We explored the lived experience of stigma among PWID to elucidate pathways by which stigma influences health care access and utilization. Methods—We conducted 46 qualitative interviews with PWID in California’s Central Valley between March and December 2015, as part of a multi-phase, multi-method study examining implementation of a new pharmacy syringe access law. A “risk environment” framework guided our data collection and we used a deductive/inductive approach to analyze the qualitative data. Results—Participants repeatedly cited the impact of stigma on …

#Parlezvousfemme - A One-Woman Show, Victoria G. Lindbergh
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
#parlezvousfemme is a one-woman show set in 2018 that reimagines the lives of several infamous French women. Each character approaches modern life differently based on her given circumstances and reveals several universal truths about being a woman in today’s society. The famous military leader Joan of Arc is a 19-year-old youtuber criticizing the far-right for using her as their symbol, while revolutionary Olympe de Gouges is a modern-day women’s rights activist. Marie Antoinette is a housewife being interviewed by Vogue and scientist Marie Curie hosts a PBS telethon and addresses the lack of women in science. Designer Coco Chanel is …

Grandfamilies In Vietnam: Grandparents’ Engagements In Grandchildren’S Academic Performance At School, Nga Thi Ngoc Nguyen
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In Vietnam, the number of grandparents who become full -time surrogate parents to their grandchildren has significantly increased. When parenting is left to grandparents, they play the same role as biological parents. They significantly affect the educational functioning, developmental outcomes, and well-being of their grandchildren. Using data from in-depth interviews with 16 participants who are raising their grandchildren, the current study provides insight into children’s education in the grandparents-headed households in Vietnam. The more grandparents are involved in their grandchildren’s educational process, the more likely their grandchildren are to achieve academic success. I have found that there is a strong …

Health Fetishism Among The Nacirema: A Fugue On Jenny Reardon’S "The Postgenomic Condition: Ethics, Justice, And Knowledge After The Genome" (Chicago University Press, 2017) And Isabelle Stengers’ "Another Science Is Possible: A Manifesto For Slow Science" (Polity Press, 2018), Scott F. Gilbert
Biology Faculty Works
Personalized medicine has become a goal of genomics and of health policy makers. This article reviews two recent books that are highly critical of this approach, finding their arguments very thoughtful and important. According to Stengers, biology’s rush to become a science of genome sequences has made it part of the “speculative economy of promise.” Reardon claims that the postgenomic condition is the attempt to find meaning in all the troves of data that have been generated. The current paper attempts to extend these arguments by showing that scientific alternatives such as ecological developmental biology and the tissue organization field …

It has been a commonplace among anthropologists since Malinowski that during the performance of traditional stories the listening community experiences the primordial past when the gods still appeared freely to humans. Significantly, this involves not a return to the past, but a return of the past. The Odyssey not only depicts its own hero as a character from the heroic past, in which the gods were intimately involved with the heroes who fought at Troy, but also as one who brings the past with him when he returns home to an Ithaca that represents a greatly diminished present. In so …

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
The 2017-2018 Editorial Collective is pleased to present the 27th volume of disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory.
Over the past year, we have compiled an exciting collection of interviews, scholarly articles, poetry, and fiction that explore the volume’s central theme: “Archives.” Archives are dynamic constellations of absence and presence, ghosts and ghouls, dust and the digital. As such, discussions of archives stretch into multiple schools of thought and practice, raising questions about power, knowledge, memory, community, and social justice. The works collected here, each one employing its own theoretical and methodological approach to archives, contribute to these important …

I See What You Say: Influential Nonverbal Signals Of Frontline Employees On Customer Outcomes, Shuang Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
This research aims to investigate the influential nonverbal signals of frontline employees on customer outcomes. Frontline employees play a vital role in initiating and maintaining customer relationships. The interactions between customers and employees influence not only the immediate reactions, including both affective and cognitive responses, but also customer outcomes, like purchase intention, satisfaction, perceived service quality, and positive word-of-mouth. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies are employed in this dissertation.
Previous studies examined the effects of employee nonverbal signals on customers’ cognitive responses, but limited research has been done on the affective responses of customers. Affect-based trust, positive affect, negative affect, …
