Building Bigness: Reputation, Prominence, And Social Capital In Rural South India, Eleanor A. Power, Elspeth Ready
Building Bigness: Reputation, Prominence, And Social Capital In Rural South India, Eleanor A. Power, Elspeth Ready
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Anthropologists have long been concerned with how reputations help people gain the support of others. Here, we study the support ties among adult residents of two Tamil villages, asking how reputational standing in each village mediates access to social support. We find that a reputation for influence has the weakest effect on support ties with others, while a reputation for generosity has the strongest. Further, a reputation for influence is not associated with greater connections to people of “high position” outside the village. Given the weak effects of a reputation for influence, we turn to a network measure of social …

Modest Dress As Literacy Practice In English-Speaking Conservative Mennonite Groups, Megan Lois Mong
Modest Dress As Literacy Practice In English-Speaking Conservative Mennonite Groups, Megan Lois Mong
Theses and Dissertations
English-speaking conservative Mennonites exercise a distinct set of dress practices that are not often understood by people outside the community. Advances in New Literacy Studies pave the way to understand their dress practices as a type of literacy. Multiple literacies work together to inform conservative Mennonite dress practices. One of these literacies is the reading and writing of religious texts. A second literacy is a form of heritage literacy where clothing functions as a multimodal text. Conservative Mennonites use their clothing to codify their Christian identity, gender roles and church affiliation. They intend their clothing to represent who they are …

"I Refuse To Die": Exploring The Relationship Between Spirituality And Persistence Among African American Ph.D. Students And Graduates, Kerley Perminio Most
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
African American doctoral students experience the highest levels of attrition (60%) in the nation and the most social and academic challenges in higher education. Concurrently, research supports that African Americans are among the most spiritual people in America. This study applied hierarchical logistic regression to investigate the relationship between spirituality and persistence among African American doctoral students (N = 179). Tinto’s model of attrition, a systematic framework to predict degree completion based on suicide theory, was employed. Reliable instruments, the Institutional Integration Scale and the Spirituality Scale, were utilized. Results revealed that (a) different levels of spirituality were related to …

Political Power In The Peripheries: The Paramilitares From Magdalena Medio (Colombia), 1978-2003, Nicolás Guillermo Velásquez Hernández
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores the political discourse and military behavior of the “paramilitares” right-wing militia as well as of the local political alliances that sponsored and initially controlled these militias in the Magdalena Medio region, a rural periphery in Colombia, during the last decades of the 20th century. Previous literature explains these right-wing militias simultaneously as reaction of rural elites to the incapacity of the Central State to monopolize political violence and as the consequence of the rural elites fear of an agrarian reform. Yet, from a tradition Weberian perspective, it is impossible to present the state as both capable and …

“It Is Hard Right Now”: High School Educators Working With Undocumented Students, Carolina Valdivia, Marisol Clark-Ibáñez
Latino Public Policy
This project began with an interest in learning about the experiences of educators working with undocumented high school students in San Diego County. The backdrop for this study is the current anti-immigrant climate, specifically targeting Latinx undocumented immigrants. Educators in the San Diego County are working in a context where immigration authorities are deporting their students’ family members. Our aim is to begin painting a picture of who these educators are and some of the practices they employ to support their undocumented students. We hope our findings will begin to support educators and in turn their students.

Western Champa people are part of Cambodian and they moved to Cambodia because of the Vietnamese began to build their strength and suppress them to the neighborhood country. Although their kingdom were originally in Vietnam and some of Champa people/Eastern Champa still live and thrive there, and some of them were recorded to speak Austronesian language. Therefore their language is slightly similar to Bahasa Indonesia and both languages are categorized as Malayo-Chamic. Two similarities of these languages that will be further discussed in this research are the words boh [b?h] and talai [t?la?] for buah [buwah] and tali [t?li] that …

Learner Power! The Benefits Of Metacognition And Transparency On Education Justice, Insights From Neuroscience Of Learning, Camille O. Nava
University Honors Theses
Emerging understandings from neuroscience and cognitive research on human learning indicate that nearly all people can learn, and that we can do so throughout our lifetimes. Simultaneously, public health research from the late 1990s identified Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This research connected ACEs to incidence of factors impacting children’s development (including cognitive and educational) and possible long-term impairments to life outcomes. Incidence of impact factors is correlated with effects of poverty and socioeconomic status, especially as the experiences of poverty can create neural stress impacts similar as those resulting from ACEs. Specific insights from ACEs-related research identifies developmental impacts to …
Painting A New Narrative: Facilitating The Social Integration And Personal Empowerment Of Schizophrenic Individuals Through Art, Erica M. Vollmer
Painting A New Narrative: Facilitating The Social Integration And Personal Empowerment Of Schizophrenic Individuals Through Art, Erica M. Vollmer
University Honors Theses
In my research I investigate how art can be used to facilitate the self-actualization and social integration of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. Through four in depth interviews with artists diagnosed with schizophrenia, and two interviews with art gallery owners, I examine how social barriers and stigmas regarding schizophrenia can be challenged through creating art and utilizing art spaces. In these accounts, participants provide narratives of resilience through creative expression and the socially transformative potential of community art galleries. I use these personal accounts to expand on the existing discourses of the relationship between art, community, and mental …

Transformation Of Post-Authoritarian Rural Development In Indonesia: A Study Of Farmer Breeder Community Development In West Bandung Regency, Rahmalia Rifandini
Transformation Of Post-Authoritarian Rural Development In Indonesia: A Study Of Farmer Breeder Community Development In West Bandung Regency, Rahmalia Rifandini
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The idea of post-authoritarian rural development is seen as the transformation of rural development since it no longer places the village as an object of development characterized by the demand for the preparation of rural development instruments. However, in practice, the development instruments do not result in the improvement of agricultural and livestock productivity as it happened in Kampung Pasir Angling, Suntenjaya Village, West Bandung Regency, West Java. Using a critical development perspective, the study argues that rural development transformation may apply if not limited to changes in public policy strategies, but rather to the social change in various sectors …

Review Essay: Law And Migrant Labor In The 20th Century: Ghost Workers And Global Capitalism, Ruth M. Gomberg-Muñoz
Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Large-scale movements of workers, production lines, commodities, and centers of power have been integral to capitalist development since its earliest stages (see Mintz 1986; Wallerstein 2011; Wolf 1997). Today, mobility continues to uphold global capitalism in important respects (Sassen 1988). In particular, the capacity to move production across nation-state borders has allowed capitalist industries to take advantage of post-colonial inequalities as they reorganize production in ways and places that reduce manufacturing costs and enhance corporate profit...

An Evaluation On The Policies On Public Health Workers As Health Professionals, Muswandar Muswandar, Purnawan Junadi
Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration
Law No. 36 of 2014 is a comprehensive law for health professionals. In that regulation, all health graduates that wish to practice their trade must have a letter of registration (STR). That policy also separated environmental health from public health. This was the reason why we decided to evaluate the policy that is related to public health professionals. This evaluation was a retrospective analysis that used in-depth interviews and literary research, respectively as primary and secondary data. From this research we discovered that public health graduates is has their own profession. And to obtain the right to practice their trade, …

The Upside Of Down Syndrome: Math Is My Superpower!, Heidi Berger
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
My son Isaac has Down syndrome. He was born in 2015, within a year of me receiving tenure at Simpson College. The experience of being his mother has had a profound effect on me as a mathematician. Having been with him through eleven surgeries over sixteen hospitalizations, I wanted to learn about his medical complexities and, more generally, about coordinated health care for those with chronic illness. To accomplish these goals, I’ve looked to my teaching and research. In the spring of 2016, I designed a sophomore-level mathematical modeling course on the respiratory system. In the summer of 2016, I …

The Situatedness Of Mathematics In Motherhood And Academia, Jennifer Schenk Sacco, Jill Shahverdian
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The authors, a mathematician and a political scientist, examine mathematics, motherhood, and academia, and argue that feminist epistemology is necessary to explain the intersection. Relying on the principles of feminist epistemology laid out by philosophers Naomi Scheman and Marianne Janack, the authors consider how work, the concept of time, teaching, arts and crafts, and decision-making all reveal the situatedness of knowing and using mathematics.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Submerged aircraft are a newly emerging area of study in underwater archaeology. In August 2016, a multidisciplinary team conducted the first archaeological survey of the deep water (829 m) wreck of the ex-USS Independence (CVL22), a WWII era light carrier scuttled off San Francisco after its use as an atomic bomb test target and subsequently as a floating radiological laboratory and training facility. Using the remotely operated vehicles Argus and Hercules, the expedition documented and studied Independence including assessment of a sonar target thought to be an aircraft resting inside the sunken carrier’s forward elevator pit.
