Cuban Vintage Car Culture, Zachary H. White Aug 2018

Cuban Vintage Car Culture, Zachary H. White

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

The purpose of this research was to investigate the culture surrounding the vintage American cars found in Cuba. Through preliminary research, the researcher determined Cubans are continuing to use these cars as a means of transportation as well as a source of income. They have kept the cars maintained by recycling parts from other cars, tractors, and boats, as well as buying new parts from the black market. Once they have been repaired, many owners around major cities use them as taxis. This is so that the owners can afford to maintain them as well as provide additional income for …

The Relationship Between Positive Thinking, Religion, And Health From The Perspectives Of Arab University Students, Abir K. Bekhet, Israh Sarsour

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background: The population of Arab Americans (AA) in the United States continues to increase in recent decades. The perceptions of AA university students will be of interest as they are younger than any other group in America, but very few studies explore their opinions especially with regards to topics involving religion, health, and mode of thinking as proposed in this study. Researchers have also suggested that a limitation in much of the research that currently exists on the topic of spirituality and religion is that it primarily focuses on Christian samples, and that future studies should include individuals from more …

Zooming Into A Tinkering Project: The Progression Of Learning Through Transitional Objects, Priyanka Parekh, Elisabeth R. Gee Aug 2018

Zooming Into A Tinkering Project: The Progression Of Learning Through Transitional Objects, Priyanka Parekh, Elisabeth R. Gee

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The Maker Movement has been received by the field of K–12 education with great enthusiasm as a way of teaching STEM content to children. We call attention to and identify learning opportunities in children’s projects created in a playful, informal environment with easily available materials. In keeping with research in the field of maker education and learning sciences, we describe tinkering as a constructionist learning activity in which meaning making is captured through transitional objects (Bamberger, 1995). First, we examine one specific tinkering project and identify transitional objects within the project. Next, we discuss the process of meaning making as …

Enhancing User Experience: A Multifaceted Approach To Designing Better User Experiences Using Compassionate Design Thinking, Socially Conscious Design And Psychophysiological Measures, Priya Seshadri

Open Access Dissertations

The goal of this research is to help in creation of better user experience (UX) by enabling engineers and designers to get a deeper understanding of the users by focusing on the users’ needs, emotions, experiences and social issues. The main research question that guides this work is: How can engineers and designers better understand their users to create designs that aim at enhancing user experiences? Understanding the users and UX has many facets and dimensions. The users make decisions based on emotions and experiences, which also determine the value they associate with a design. Experiences are related to the …

Linear Association Between Maternal Age And Need Of Medical Interventions At Delivery In Primiparae: A Cohort Of 21,235 Singleton Births, Pierre-Yves Robillard, Thomas C. Hulsey, Malik Boukerrou, Francesco Bonsante, Gustaaf Dekker, Silvia Iacobelli Aug 2018

Linear Association Between Maternal Age And Need Of Medical Interventions At Delivery In Primiparae: A Cohort Of 21,235 Singleton Births, Pierre-Yves Robillard, Thomas C. Hulsey, Malik Boukerrou, Francesco Bonsante, Gustaaf Dekker, Silvia Iacobelli

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Objectives—We sought to investigate the potential association between maternal age and the need for active obstetrical intervention intrapartum in primiparas. Study design—Observational study over 14 years (2001–2014) of all consecutive primiparous singleton births having delivered at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Hospitalier Sud Reunion's maternity (French overseas department, Indian Ocean). Results—Of the 21,235 singleton primiparous births, there were three significant linear associations between maternal age from 12 years of age to 42 +(all χ2 for linear trend, p < .0001) (a) vaginal deliveries without any medical intervention, (b) rate of cesarean sections, and (c) rate of operative vaginal procedures. These three linear associations persisted when controlling for maternal obesity (±30 kg/m2 ), “heavy babies” (>3.5 kg), and ethnicity. Using maternal age remained significantly an independent risk factor (p < .0001), after controlling for the major confounders: maternal BMI, maternal height, birthweight ≥3500 g, p < .0001. Conclusions—Increasing maternal age has a linear association with vaginal deliveries without any medical intervention, rate of cesarean sections, and rate of operative vaginal procedures. These associations are independent of maternal BMI and maternal height. We currently do not have a specific explanation why younger women appear to be protected from requiring intrapartum obstetric intervention. Nevertheless, these strong facts deserve acknowledgement and further research.

Hearing And Orally Mimicking Different Acoustic-Semantic Categories Of Natural Sound Engage Distinct Left Hemisphere Cortical Regions, James W. Lewis, Magenta J. Silberman, Jeremy J. Donai, Chris A. Frum, Julie A. Brefczynski-Lewis Aug 2018

Hearing And Orally Mimicking Different Acoustic-Semantic Categories Of Natural Sound Engage Distinct Left Hemisphere Cortical Regions, James W. Lewis, Magenta J. Silberman, Jeremy J. Donai, Chris A. Frum, Julie A. Brefczynski-Lewis

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Oral mimicry is thought to represent an essential process for the neurodevelopment of spoken language systems in infants, the evolution of language in hominins, and a process that could possibly aid recovery in stroke patients. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we previously reported a divergence of auditory cortical pathways mediating perception of specific categories of natural sounds. However, it remained unclear if or how this fundamental sensory organization by the brain might relate to motor output, such as sound mimicry. Here, using fMRI, we revealed a dissociation of activated brain regions preferential for hearing with the intent to imitate …

Liminal Spirituality: Why Religion Is Changing And How Churches Can Respond, Savoy Stevens Aug 2018

Liminal Spirituality: Why Religion Is Changing And How Churches Can Respond, Savoy Stevens

Seminary Masters Theses

This thesis examines the dynamic factors influencing religious disengagement in the United States and identifies five best practices for churches interested in responding to the growing number of “nones” and “dones.” Placing religious disengagement within the framework of Christian history, relative to the cyclical nature of religious movements, it confirms the occasion and purpose of the ensuing “liminal spirituality” and explores what many scholars suggest is a new era of Christian history. Factors influencing religious disengagement considered include; the impact of post-modern and metamodern cultural logic, the role of doubt in personal faith formation, the ways in which the Church …

Play And Exhibitions: Expanding Definitions Within Museums, Helena Sizemore Aug 2018

Play And Exhibitions: Expanding Definitions Within Museums, Helena Sizemore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of the utilization of play, as a method for visitor engagement, within the context of the museum. Play, as a method for learning and engagement, is often a contested topic between scholars and practitioners within the museum field. This is in part due to the ambiguous nature of defining play, the ever-present dichotomy between work and play, and the struggles museums find in balancing education and entertainment. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Denver, Colorado names play as part of one of its core values. Using anthropological theoretical and methodological approaches, I examine …

Beautiful Kitsch: Kitsch Tolerance Amongst The Educated, Tiffany D.E. Yonts Aug 2018

Beautiful Kitsch: Kitsch Tolerance Amongst The Educated, Tiffany D.E. Yonts

Action Research Projects

This is an arts-based research project using Rita Irwin’s A/R/Tography methodology to explore kitsch tolerance within an academically educated populace and defend kitsch as a valid contemporary art form. Through the creation of a body of artwork, survey, and conversations with the target demographic, this researcher attempted to puzzle out the relationship between kitsch and academically educated people, a group traditionally not associated with kitsch. I created a body of artwork in an attempt to blur the lines between high and low art using techniques, materials, and subject matter, particularly using a lens of beauty, from both categories to see …

Agreeing To Submit: Authority Constructions In Modern Sunni Islam, Trevor E. Wolff Aug 2018

Agreeing To Submit: Authority Constructions In Modern Sunni Islam, Trevor E. Wolff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the modern age, Sunni communities are often claimed to be in a moment of crisis. However, despite outward arguments about this crisis, Sunni communities are more accurately described as within a state of transformation. By analyzing constructions of authority from Sayyid Qutb, the clerical establishment of Saudi Arabia, and the greater American Muslim communities, Sunni theology is best seen as seeking out methods to transform and re-center authority within Sunni communities.

From Hybrid Space To Dislocated Space: Mobile Virtual Reality And A Third Stage Of Mobile Media Theory, Michael Saker, Jordan Frith Aug 2018

From Hybrid Space To Dislocated Space: Mobile Virtual Reality And A Third Stage Of Mobile Media Theory, Michael Saker, Jordan Frith

Publications

Research in the field of mobile communication studies (MCS) has generally moved away from focusing on how mobile phones distract users from their physical environment to considering how the experience of space and place can be enhanced by locative smartphone applications. This article argues that trajectory may be complicated by the emergence of a new type of mobile technology: mobile virtual reality (MVR). While an increasing number of handsets are specifically developed with MVR in mind, there is little to no research that situates this phenomenon within the continuum of MCS. The intention of this paper is accordingly twofold. First, …

Companion Animal Statistics In The Usa, Andrew N. Rowan Aug 2018

Companion Animal Statistics In The Usa, Andrew N. Rowan

Demography and Statistics for Companion Animal Populations Collection

Early in 2008, a number of organizations and individuals interested in accurate statistics on pet population numbers and trends gathered in a hotel in Houston, TX to review the available data on estimated pet populations and shelter demographics. While the data and analysis below was produced and subsequently added to by just one of those individuals, the following document takes into account the input from those who attended. For example, it was generally accepted that the AVMA pet population estimates from their quinquennial surveys are likely to be more reliable than the biennial surveys used to produce the APPMA demographic …

Report On Owned Dog Population Survey In Lingayen, Philippines, Tamara Kartal, Lynne U. Sneddon, Amit Chaudhari

Demography and Statistics for Companion Animal Populations Collection

The Philippines is among the Southeast Asian countries that has a long-standing problem with rabies. About 200 people die of rabies each year in the Philippines, and most are attributed to dog bite cases (Deray, 2015). The sources of infection of more than 95% of human rabies cases worldwide have been reported to be domestic dogs (Cleaveland, et al., 2006). Focusing on the main source rather than the human population, is therefore, the best strategy to eliminate rabies. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends covering at least 70% of the existing domestic dog population with rabies vaccination in the shortest …

Asset-Based Teaching And Learning With Diverse Learners In Postsecondary Settings, Erika L. Mein Aug 2018

Asset-Based Teaching And Learning With Diverse Learners In Postsecondary Settings, Erika L. Mein

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The demographic composition of students in U.S. institutions of higher education is rapidly shifting. We know that 21st century learners are more digitally adept and more socially, economically, and culturally/linguistically diverse than at any moment historically. The The University of Texas at El Paso's (UTEP) student body reflects these broader demographic changes taking place nationwide: more than 80% of UTEP students are Latina/o, with the majority identifying as bilingual; more than 50% of students are the first in their families to attend college; and roughly half of students are Pell-eligible (e.g., many of whom have annual family incomes of less …
