Survey Of Research In Multiculturalism In Expressive Therapies, Christine Yerrakadu
Survey Of Research In Multiculturalism In Expressive Therapies, Christine Yerrakadu
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis literature review defines and explores the issues concerning multiculturalism in the field of expressive art therapies. Many authors have stated the need for multicultural education and self assessment of the clinician. Personal identification of the client should take precedence over generalization of world cultures. Self-assessment of the clinician is needed in order to examine possible personal biases. Awareness of multiculturalism is only the first step, and further exploration into education and skills using the expressive art therapies would hone multicultural competencies.

Navigating Rough Waters: Public Swimming Pools, Discrimination, And The Law, Steven N. Waller Ph.D., Jim Bemiller Jd
Navigating Rough Waters: Public Swimming Pools, Discrimination, And The Law, Steven N. Waller Ph.D., Jim Bemiller Jd
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Historically, swimming pools have been a focal point of racial tension. Discrimination and segregation are inextricably tied to the history of public swimming usage in the United States. Pools are public spaces that are physically and visually intimate. History has revealed that both de jure (enacted through the law by the government) and de facto (occurs through social interaction) discrimination have contributed to segregatory practices in the United States. The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to examine the social pattern of discrimination that has stymied the growth of swimming in communities of color in the United States; and …

Harmonies And Dissonances: The Relationship Between Values Taught And Values Experienced In Three Values-Oriented High Schools, Barbara Merson
Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative study examined the relationship between values taught and values experienced in three values-oriented high schools, i.e., high schools whose educational philosophy and objectives include an emphasis on specific values. The research questions focused on description of values taught and experienced within the schools, the perception of leaders and teachers about this relationship, and the theories of action developed by school leaders and teachers to enhance the relationship. Primary data sources included interviews with leaders and teachers, observations of classrooms and public spaces, and document reviews in each school. Data were analyzed both within each school and across the …
Intellectual Philanthropy: The Seduction Of The Masses, Aurélie Vialette
Intellectual Philanthropy: The Seduction Of The Masses, Aurélie Vialette
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
What's in a nineteenth-century philanthropist? Fear of an uprising. But the frightened philanthropist has a remedy. Aware that the urban surge of the working-class masses in Spain would create a state of emergency, he or she devises a means to seduce the masses away from rebellion by taking on himself or herself the role of the seducer: the capitalist intellectual hero invested in the caretaking of the unpredictable working class. Intellectual Philanthropy examines cultural practices used by philanthropists in modern Iberia. It explains the meaning and role of intellectual philanthropy by focusing on the devices and apparatuses philanthropists devised to …

Comparison Of Two Ancient Dna Extraction Protocols For Skeletal Remains From Tropical Environments, Maria A. Nieves-Colon, Andrew T. Ozga, William J. Pestle, Andrea Cucina, Vera Tiesler, Travis W. Stanton, Anne C. Stone
Biology Faculty Articles
Objectives
The tropics harbor a large part of the world's biodiversity and have a long history of human habitation. However, paleogenomics research in these climates has been constrained so far by poor ancient DNA yields. Here we compare the performance of two DNA extraction methods on ancient samples of teeth and petrous portions excavated from tropical and semi‐tropical sites in Tanzania, Mexico, and Puerto Rico (N = 12).
Materials and Methods
All samples were extracted twice, built into double‐stranded sequencing libraries, and shotgun sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500. The first extraction protocol, Method D, was previously designed for …
Essential Air Service: A Lower Rung On The Pilot Shortage Food Chain?, Michael Peck
Essential Air Service: A Lower Rung On The Pilot Shortage Food Chain?, Michael Peck
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The Essential Air Service (EAS) program, established in 1978 by the federal government as a temporary measure designed to help remote communities cope with the impact of airline deregulation, subsidizes flights to certain destinations that would not otherwise have ready access to commercial air service. The airlines participating in this program fly relatively smaller aircraft and have traditionally hovered at the lower end of the salary scale. Their pilots are, nevertheless, subject to the same flight experience requirements as the major carriers. The national (or perhaps international) pilot shortage has caused some EAS carriers to abruptly terminate service leaving the …

Follow The Money And The Research - Engaging Students And Non-Profits With A Grant-Seeking Course, Alyssa Wright
Colloquium on Libraries & Service Learning
Research for Non-Profits is a 300/500 level service-learning course that gives students an introduction to non-profits and grant-seeking while teaching them research and information literacy skills. The final project is a funder research portfolio for a non-profit client with a funding need. This portfolio contains detailed profiles of funding agencies that are most likely to give to the non-profit as well as statistics and research studies useful for writing a grant proposal. As students draft, revise, and polish the portfolios, they hone their research skills as well as engage with larger information literacy concepts, particularly the value of information; information …
Building History: Public History Students Make Community History More Accessible Through Building History Projects, Theresa Mcdevitt
Building History: Public History Students Make Community History More Accessible Through Building History Projects, Theresa Mcdevitt
Colloquium on Libraries & Service Learning
Historic buildings shaped, witnessed, bear evidence of, and can serve as
accessible gateways to the history of a community. They also can
contribute the development of a community’s identity. The case for the
value of aging structures and the task of arguing for their preservation
may fall upon the shoulders of underfunded and under resourced local
historical societies. Public history students and local historical
societies benefit from collaborative service-learning experiences where
students help the historical society document local history and build
their work place skills. Students also gain an awareness of the
importance of the work historical societies do and …
Critical Convergence: Social Justice Pedagogy, Information Literacy, And Value-Focused Assessment Of Service Learning, Nicole Branch
Critical Convergence: Social Justice Pedagogy, Information Literacy, And Value-Focused Assessment Of Service Learning, Nicole Branch
Colloquium on Libraries & Service Learning
Critical approaches to information literacy instruction have developed over the past decades in parallel with service learning that emphasizes social justice and efforts to reclaim assessment of student learning in higher education as an “ethical, value-concerned social practice” (p. 5, Wall, Hursh, & Rodgers, 2014). While arising from similar critiques and concerns within higher education, these complimentary forces have not often intersected. This presentation will share how bringing together social justice pedagogy, information literacy, and critical assessment approaches can elevate all three practices. The presenter will share a successful collaboration between a librarian and a faculty member in a sociology …

Shifting Masculinities From North Africa: In Yasmina Khadra, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Mohamed Leftah And Abdellah Taïa’S Fictions, Melyssa Haffaf
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation concentrates on four texts by Maghrebian writers, published between the late 1990s to the 2000s, and explores the ways in which their fictional narratives portray, articulate and challenge the dominant discourse on masculinity in postcolonial North Africa. The four novels are the following: Wolf Dreams (1999) by Yasmina Khadra, Leaving Tangier (2006) by Tahar Ben Jelloun, An Arab Melancholia (2008) by Abdellah Taïa and Le dernier combat du Captain Ni’mat (2011) by Mohamed Leftah. I demonstrate that despite a strong influence of hegemonic models of masculinity promoted and cultivated during and after the decolonization processes, the masculinities presented …

The Socio-Political Debate Of Dying Today In The United Kingdom And New Zealand: ‘Letting Go’ Of The Biomedical Model Of Care In Order To Develop A Contemporary Ars Moriendi, Rhona Winnington, Eleanor Holroyd, Shelaine Zambas
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Death is a reality of life. Despite this inevitability, death today remains unwelcome and has been sequestered into the enclaves of medical practice as a means of quelling the rising tide of fear it provokes. Medical practice currently maintains power over the dying individual, actualised through the selective collaboration between medicine and law as a means of subverting the individual who attempts to disrupt the contemporary accepted norms of dying. There is, however, a shift on the horizon as to whether we can make the notion of a true choice become a reality in New Zealand. This serves to offer …
Sociocultural Diversity In The Prehispanic Southwest: Learning, Weaving, And Identity In The Chaco Regional System, A.D. 850-1140, Edward Alexander Jolie
Sociocultural Diversity In The Prehispanic Southwest: Learning, Weaving, And Identity In The Chaco Regional System, A.D. 850-1140, Edward Alexander Jolie
Anthropology ETDs
Between about A.D. 850 and 1140, the archaeology of Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico reveals the rapid construction of large communal structures where smaller settlements had existed previously and shows that the locality became the core of an extensive regional system in the Four Corners region of the northern Southwest integrated by formal trails, the circulation of nonlocal goods, and the sharing of ritual items. Researchers vigorously debate the role of increased sociopolitical complexity in this development, but less attention has been given to questions of sociocultural diversity and its impacts.
Guided by previous research suggesting the existence of …

The 'Bulgarian Situation': Constructing The Myth Of A 'National Mentality' In Bulgarian Discourse And Its Effect On Agency, Nadezhda Sotirova
Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications
This study examines the mythic form of the ‘Bulgarian situation’,which is evoked and managed in moments of social interaction, and during enactments of oplakvane (complaining) in Bulgarian discourse. Based on ethnographic examination of naturally occurring talk, interviews, and various media data, the article constructs the larger cultural narrative available in Bulgarian discourse, which explains the origins of a national identity, linked to a ‘national mentality’ developed over a historical period. This national identity is constituted communication, and highlights a deeply cultural notion of nationality and biology as intricately connected, and developed in the context of the Ottoman occupation, and the following period of socialism. Such …
Efficient Data Driven Multi Source Fusion, Muhammad Aminul Islam
Efficient Data Driven Multi Source Fusion, Muhammad Aminul Islam
Theses and Dissertations
Data/information fusion is an integral component of many existing and emerging applications; e.g., remote sensing, smart cars, Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data, to name a few. While fusion aims to achieve better results than what any one individual input can provide, often the challenge is to determine the underlying mathematics for aggregation suitable for an application. In this dissertation, I focus on the following three aspects of aggregation: (i) efficient data-driven learning and optimization, (ii) extensions and new aggregation methods, and (iii) feature and decision level fusion for machine learning with applications to signal and image processing. The …
A Network-Based Method For The Analysis Of Use And Function In Stone Tool Kits: Implications For Late Prehistoric Settlement Patterning In Northeast Mississippi, Jason Nathaniel Ervin
A Network-Based Method For The Analysis Of Use And Function In Stone Tool Kits: Implications For Late Prehistoric Settlement Patterning In Northeast Mississippi, Jason Nathaniel Ervin
Theses and Dissertations
A network-based method is developed for analyzing use in stone tool assemblages, where 'use' denotes the tasks for which chipped edges are suitable. Modeling chipped edges as nodes, use-wear and retouch as edge traversals, use-life trajectories of chipped edges as inter-connecting paths, and `tools' as subnetworks over which design tolerances are maintained on edge morphology, the method is an attempt to improve on existing models, allowing for complex, continuous change and multiple uses throughout a chipped edge's use-life. Avoiding analogy-based categories, the method is designed to highlight rather than obscure the possibilities for use and multi-use. Potential for integration into …
Settlement Patterns In Albania From The Iron Age Through Greek Colonization And Roman Integration (1100 Bc - Ad 395), Erina Baci
Theses and Dissertations
The Illyrians were an Indo-European group of people who once inhabited a large expanse of the western Balkans. As interactions with the Greeks and, later, the Romans increased, the traditional way of life and sociopolitical organization of the Illyrians were undoubtedly altered. This thesis takes a geospatial approach in order to address how interactions with other groups of people influenced Illyrian settlement patterns. Specifically, how Greek colonization followed by Roman incorporation affected Illyrian settlement patterns in Albania? Due to its peripheral location in the Mediterranean, Albania provides a unique case study for investigating colonization, integration, and interaction between different cultures.
Petrographic Analysis Of Prehistoric Pottery Found In The Shkodër Region Of Northern Albania By The Shkodra Archaeological Project (Pash), Anisa Mara
Theses and Dissertations
Pottery, as an artifact, is often used as evidence of exchange patterns among groups during prehistory. This research incorporates paradigmatic classification and petrography to answer questions related to provenience, production mode, and exchange patterns of handmade prehistoric pottery from Gajtan, Zagorë, Kodër Boks, Tumuli 088 and 099 in Shkodër, in Northern Albania. Pottery samples analyzed in this study were collected from test excavations by the Shkodra Archaeological Project (PASH). The results yielded evidence that the area has sufficient local clay sources and other easily accessible natural resources to produce pottery in a domestic mode. Gajtan and Zagorë appeared as two …

Petrographic And Chemical Analysis Of Grinding Stones Collected By The Shkodra Archaeological Project, Zhaneta Gjyshja
Theses and Dissertations
The Shkodra Archaeological Project (PASH) took place in northern Albania, particularly in the Shkodra region. PASH focused on analyzing human settlements and social behaviors, from prehistory to modern times. This thesis focuses on the study of grinding stones collected by this project during excavation and survey. This study incorporates macroscopic, petrographic and chemical analyses to source these grinding stones and compares them with sourced samples collected in South Albania to answer questions about raw material selection and social interactions. It was found that, based on their chemical and petrographic properties, grinding stones collected by PASH are different from those collected …
