Pentecostalism And Charismatic Movements In Nigeria: Factors Of Growth And Inherent Challenges, Matthews A. Ojo
Pentecostalism And Charismatic Movements In Nigeria: Factors Of Growth And Inherent Challenges, Matthews A. Ojo
The WATS Journal: An Online Journal from West Africa Theological Seminary
Since about 1986, i.e. in the past 46 years and within our own generation, we have witnessed certain fundamental changes in the way Christianity is perceived and practiced in Nigeria, and in other parts ofWest Africa. The most substantial change is associated with a kind of spirituality brought into existence by the rise of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. This new religious effervescence is part of what is generally referred to as the Charismatic Renewal, a revivalist movement within the Christian church with global dimension. From its old form as a sectarian religion in Africa in the early twentieth century, by …
"There Are No Ordinary People": Christian Humanism And Christian Legal Thought, Richard W. Garnett
"There Are No Ordinary People": Christian Humanism And Christian Legal Thought, Richard W. Garnett
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
It seems to me that what my colleague, teacher, and friend, the late Robert E. Rodes, Jr., liked to call “the legal enterprise” is the project of coordinating, structuring, facilitating, and constraining human activities in a way that promotes and secures the common good and, thereby, promotes the flourishing of human persons. This project proceeds from, and depends on, an account of what the human person is and is for—a “moral anthropology.” I have argued elsewhere, for example, that certain “truths about the nature, goods, and destiny of the human person, namely, that we were made by God—whose love …
The Pre-History Of Subsidiarity In Leo Xiii, Michael P. Moreland
The Pre-History Of Subsidiarity In Leo Xiii, Michael P. Moreland
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
Part of the confusion over subsidiarity—but also, perhaps, an aspect of the principle’s richness—is its combination, then, of both “libertarian” and “communitarian” elements. Progress in our understanding and application of subsidiarity will require a careful assessment of these considerations and determining when intervention or assistance [subsidium] from a higher authority is needed and when devolution of responsibility is warranted. More precisely, we will need to determine when authority is properly located at a higher level and when authority is properly recognized in the smaller community. This conclusion, in turn, will require a discussion of subsidiarity’s political theoretical …
Brennan And Brewbaker's Christian Legal Thought: Providing The Foundations For Establishment Clause Understanding, Angela C. Carmella
Brennan And Brewbaker's Christian Legal Thought: Providing The Foundations For Establishment Clause Understanding, Angela C. Carmella
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
Under this approach—which clearly prioritizes the protection of religious exercise as well as the religious messages of cultural and political institutions—it appears that the Establishment Clause plays little or no role independent of the Free Exercise Clause. My question, then, is whether Christian legal thought compels us, or at least supports, such a reading of the Establishment Clause. In other words, does this lack of concern for non-establishment norms inhere in Christian legal and political thought? I look to Patrick Brennan and William Brewbaker’s casebook—Christian Legal Thought: Materials and Cases (“CLT”) —in search of a framework for exploration. …

(Excerpt)
On January 26, 2018, the Journal of Catholic Legal Studies proudly hosted a conference on Christian Legal Thought: Materials and Cases a first-of-its-kind casebook authored by Patrick M. Brennan and William S. Brewbaker. Missional Partnership: Reframing The Concept Of “Placing Membership”, Steve Cloer
Missional Partnership: Reframing The Concept Of “Placing Membership”, Steve Cloer
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
This essay reframes the process of “placing membership” in a local church with the theological concept of missional partnership. A critical review is offered of the organizational procedure of “placing membership,” its underlying theoretical assumptions, and its deficient theological vision. Then, the practice of joining a local Christian community is reimagined in a missional ecclesiology focusing on the key theological strands of spiritual accountability and equipping for mission. The biblical metaphor of “partner in the gospel” is explored as an alternative to “membership” as a way to adequately communicate what joining, entering, and participating within a church on mission entails. …
Implications Of Globalization On Education, Anthropology And Praxis Collaborative
Implications Of Globalization On Education, Anthropology And Praxis Collaborative
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This piece actually began as an assignment in which each of us were to write a paragraph on "education." As I remember it, this led to the idea that we collect them together in a kind of anthology. This was followed by the chain-letter method of sending on paragraph around to each person for comment. The result of that is what you see here.

Organization Of The Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) And Opportunities For Sustainable Development, Matthew Goodlaw, Jessica Nixon, Paul Alexander
Culture, Society, and Praxis
OPEC is in the business of natural resources which inherently connects them to the concept of sustainable development. The main focus of this research is to answer the following question: Does OPEC have the power to implement measures consistent with the concept of sustainable development? During the course of this research, the paper Sustainable Development and OPEC, by Herman E. Daly, was uncovered. Daly proposes a sink tax to be implemented by OPEC. This would act as a global fiduciary which would, in theory, bring the consumption level of oil down to a more sustainable level by raising the price …

City Backdrop: Television And Its Gentrifying Influence On A City's Black Community, Ana Hoshovsky
Pop Culture Intersections
This paper will focus on the issue of race representation in television and its implications to real life communities in the cities featured in television. Scenes from the comedy show Portlandia will be examined to determine the effects the show has on the black community of Northeast Portland, Oregon. Characters from HBO’s Treme will also be analyzed to assess the show’s claim of representing the struggles of locals in a post-Katrina New Orleans. The lack of diverse representation throughout Portlandia’s eight seasons has caused the show to help to fuel the gentrification in the city. Viewers of the show are …

A mirco conference organised my myself and Richard Herriott at Kodling Design School Denmark: the conference discussed: Do designers still believe in the design aesthetic? "1. Designers do not possess the scientific tools to study such questions 2. Designers are not interested in studying such questions (lest an algorithm or a layman become competent enough to take their job) 3. Designers have the intuitive ability to understand form and hence do not need to study it. 4. Designers/researchers may have come to the conclusion that such a study is hopeless because of the so many aspects of form and the …

Perils Of Hollywood Whitewashing?: A Review Of 'Ghost In The Shell' Movie, Kosuke Mizukoshi
Perils Of Hollywood Whitewashing?: A Review Of 'Ghost In The Shell' Movie, Kosuke Mizukoshi
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
'Ghost in the Shell' was first produced as a Japanese animated film in 1995. The movie and its sequels established a cult status due to the philosophical depth in portraying the posthuman condition. It was remade as a live action Hollywood film in 2017; and this version failed at the box office. One reason had to be the “whitewashing” issue – that the female protagonist was played by a white actress in the Hollywood movie, rather than a Japanese character as in the original anime. This review essay critically discusses issues of whitewashing, racial ‘identity’, the shifting identity of the …
