A Reflection On The Recent Nigerian Legislation Against Same Sex Marriage Vis-À-Vis Rising Gay Activism In The Western World, Larry O. C. Chukwu
Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law
The Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act recently enacted by Nigeria criminalizes marriage or civil union between persons of the same sex; solemnization of same sex marriage or civil union or witnessing, aiding or abetting the same; registration, operation, membership or support of gay clubs; pub lic show of same sex amorous relationship and related matters. Each of these offences attracts a long term of imprisonment. The Act was enacted in bold defiance of threats of economic and political sanctions by the Western powers against any developing cou ntry that enacts anti - gay legislation. The Reasons For A (Sometimes) Change Of Mind, Imani Beverly
The Reasons For A (Sometimes) Change Of Mind, Imani Beverly
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Often we experience a “change of mind” on some issue for which, at the time it was made, we are certain of its correctness. The central question we investigate in this presentation is: What valid reasons can be made for a “change of mind”? For example, scientific progress is made because older theories are replaced by better theories with the major reason being new evaluations and analyses of data and methodologies. We examine and discuss a broad range of issues for which a “change of mind” provides useful insights on the relevant topics. Examples include the interpretation and appreciation of …

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle looks at how scientific racism, biomedicine, public health, sports, and a nascent bureaucracy intersected in the making of height (human stature) as an important attribute of individuals and populations during the Philippine–American colonial encounter. In relation to the “tall” Americans, Filipinos were depicted and problematized as “short,” and the attention to children’s growth, the rise of sports, and the establishment of a bureaucracy all contributed to making height a measure of health and a parameter of inclusion (and exclusion) in various domains of society.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • ANTHROPOMETRY • PUBLIC HEALTH • COLONIALISM • PHILIPPINES

Strategies For More Inclusive Municipal Participatory Governance And Implimenting Un-Habitat's New Urban Agenda: Improving Consultation And Participation In Urban Planning Decision-Making Processes Through Rapid Ethnographic Assessment Procedures, Sara Gwendolyn Ross
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Based on the findings of an urban legal anthropology project in Toronto, Canada that tracked municipal decision-making practices in relation to development, redevelopment, and heritage preservation in the city and the often unforeseen and unacknowledged effects these can have on marginal, transgressive, and subaltern (subcultural) communities and their community cultural spaces and practices, this article will first turn to a few neighbourhood examples of public consultation processes underway in Toronto and observations of visual (vocal) resistance to faulty consultation practices. These examples reveal some of the realities of public consultation design in Toronto and how it is experienced on the …

Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski
Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski
Charleston Library Conference
University consolidations do more than just affect students and faculty. Changes to the makeup of a campus and the programs available can have a great influence on needed journal and database subscriptions. The electronic resources and serials librarian from Augusta University and the outreach coordinator from JSTOR investigated how the consolidation of two universities with different academic missions changed the usage of their six JSTOR collections. Using data produced by JSTOR in 2012, prior to consolidation, and compiled again for 2016, the authors describe changes in usage, factors that could affect usage, and the implications for future resources.
Computational Evaluation Of The Thermal Performance Of Underground Bunkers: The Case Of Albania, Rudina Breçani, Sokol Dervishi
Computational Evaluation Of The Thermal Performance Of Underground Bunkers: The Case Of Albania, Rudina Breçani, Sokol Dervishi
International Building Physics Conference 2018
The present paper studies the thermal and energy performance and potential adaptive reuse of the lost underground bunkers of Kukës, Albania. The approach is exemplified using a 150-m long cross-section of the underground network selected for the parametric computational simulations. Data regarding local climate, design typology, and building materials is used to generate a finite-element simulation model of the underground tunnels. Different scenarios including insulation of the outer walls, occupancy patterns, and ventilation regimes are tested. The results show that indoor air temperature ranges from 15-18°C during winter and 23-28°C during summer. During January, the temperatures are higher by 3-5 …

Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment Integrating Cultural Value, Ming Hu
Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment Integrating Cultural Value, Ming Hu
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Lack of spatial and temporal flexibility is a well-known limitation of current life cycle assessment (LCA). Exclusion of human and time consideration in LCA can also limit the potential of results. This paper explicitly proposes a dynamic life cycle framework and assessment model and demonstrated the potential importance of the method by integrating the cultural theory of risk. Cultural theory (CT) of risk was developed by anthropologist Mary Douglas and is originally a societal social anthropology approach based on the structure and functioning of groups within societies. Different society produces its own selected view of the natural environment, a view …

How Much Work To Assign In Our Courses?, Jesse Fuhrman
The International Institute for Innovative Instruction Blog
No matter what type of course we are designing, we have to keep in mind how much time we are expecting learners to spend. When thinking about time expectations, there are a number of things to consider, beginning with the expectation set by those who are asking for the course or training module.

Honor And Violence: An Account Of Feuds, Duels, And Honor Killings, John Thrasher, Toby Handfield
Honor And Violence: An Account Of Feuds, Duels, And Honor Killings, John Thrasher, Toby Handfield
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
We present a theory of honor violence as a form of costly signaling. Two types of honor violence are identified: revenge and purification. Both types are amenable to a signaling analysis whereby the violent behavior is a signal that can be used by out-groups to draw inferences about the nature of the signaling group, thereby helping to solve perennial problems of social cooperation: deterrence and assurance. The analysis shows that apparently gratuitous acts of violence can be part of a system of norms that are Pareto superior to alternatives without such signals. For societies that lack mechanisms of governance to …
Trans-Pacific Imaginaries And Queer Intimacies In The Ruins Of Middlesex, Dai Kojima
Trans-Pacific Imaginaries And Queer Intimacies In The Ruins Of Middlesex, Dai Kojima
The Goose
Taking up Roland Barthes’s concept of the “third meaning,” Kojima analyzes the character of Julie Kikuchi, the Japanese American love interest of the grown-up Cal. Taking Julie seriously as a character beyond mere plot contrivance and cultural reference, Kojima invites us to consider the intertwined histories of economic rise and fall, trans-Pacific wars, and other intimacies that Middlesex remains entangled in yet fails to fully acknowledge.
