Laboratory Materials Recycling Policy
Laboratory Materials Recycling Policy
Environmental Health & Safety Policies
To ensure the safety of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis community and outside vendors, all laboratory containers and materials approved for recycling must be triple rinsed, labels defaced or removed, and uncapped before it is placed into one of the single stream recycling containers. This policy was adopted to ensure standardized and appropriate recycling methods throughout the college and college laboratories.
Malaya's Greatest Menace? Slow-Onset Disaster And The Muddy Politics Of British Malaya, C. 1900–50, Fiona Williamson
Malaya's Greatest Menace? Slow-Onset Disaster And The Muddy Politics Of British Malaya, C. 1900–50, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In 1948, a chilling statement from British Malaya’s Director of Agriculture, F. Burnett, made headline news. According to Burnett, unchecked soil erosion across hillside Malaya would soon render the country’s precious agricultural land infertile. Erosion had worsened considerably after the 1880s due to widespread, indiscriminate agricultural and industrial clearing. By the 1920s, it had become a sizeable socioeconomic and environmental issue, thought also to contribute to the scale and intensity of flooding and the likelihood of dangerous landslips. The British Government raised a series of empire-wide inquiries across the first half of the twentieth century, tied to an emerging global …
Trends Of U.S. Agricultural Cooperatives (1913-2016), Iryna Demko
Trends Of U.S. Agricultural Cooperatives (1913-2016), Iryna Demko
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
This report identifies and describes national trends in the progression of agricultural cooperatives since 1913 with an emphasis on 2000s. As the number of agricultural cooperatives in the U.S. has declined, their size, represented by business volume and the number of members, increased. Based on 1976-2016 data, cooperatives’ total assets and equity have been increasing and were projected to grow in 2017. On average, 2% of cooperatives in the U.S. merged or were acquired . Average incidence rates of mergers and acquisitions during 2000-2012 (33 incidences) were lower than during 1980-1999 (83 incidences). Over time, the number of grain cooperatives …
Shadowing Lenders And Consumers: The Rise, Regulation, And Risks Of Non-Banks, Shelby D. Green
Shadowing Lenders And Consumers: The Rise, Regulation, And Risks Of Non-Banks, Shelby D. Green
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Since the financial crisis of 2008, “shadow banking” or financial transactions by “non-banks,” has skyrocketed. Non-banks are not depositary institutions and as such, they roam free, largely outside the purview of the bank regulators. They occupy all parts of the credit markets, from mortgage loan origination to payday lenders. Untethered, they operate without government guarantees, such as deposit insurance and have no access to emergency government lending facilities, such as the Federal Reserve's discount window.
There are both positives and negatives in the rise of non-banks. On the positive side is market liquidity and greater diversity of funding sources for …

Can Genetic Factors Compromise The Success Of Dental Implants? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Joel Ferreira Santiago Junior, Cláudia Cristina Biguetti, Mariza Akemi Matsumoto, Guilherme Abu Halawa Kudo, Raquel Barroso Parra Da Silva, Patrícia Pinto Saraiva, Walid D. Fakhouri
School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
Dental implants provide a predictable treatment option for partial and complete edentulism via the placement of a fixed permanent artificial root to support prosthetic dental crowns. Despite the high survival rates, long-term dental implant failures are still reported, leading to implant removals and additional financial and health burdens. While extrinsic factors that improve the success rate of implants have been well explored, the impact of genetic factors on this matter is poorly understood. A systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted to determine whether genetic factors contribute to an increased risk of dental implant failures. A comprehensive search for peer-reviewed …
Drivers Of Introgression And Fitness In The Saltmarsh-Nelson's Sparrow Hybrid Zone, Logan Maxwell
Drivers Of Introgression And Fitness In The Saltmarsh-Nelson's Sparrow Hybrid Zone, Logan Maxwell
Master's Theses and Capstones
Hybrid zones can provide an understanding of the genetic basis of biodiversity maintenance and as well as insight into how interacting species respond to climate change, and how climate change may alter patterns of introgression. This body of research focuses on dynamics of hybridization between the Saltmarsh (Ammospiza caudacutus) and Nelson’s Sparrow (A. nelsoni) across two populations in the center of the hybrid zone to gain a window into both the evolutionary processes underlying the relationship between these species and the role of climate change and adaptive introgression on the future persistence of the two sparrows. In Chapter 1, I …

Sharks and rays are popular species used in wildlife ecotourism and aquariums to educate the public on the behavior, ecology and conservation challenges of elasmobranchs. To understand long-term physiological health and welfare under varying social and husbandry conditions, we developed and validated an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to measure stress/ionoregulatory hormones in managed and semi-free range southern rays (Hypanus americanus). Banked serum and interrenal samples from 27 female rays managed at Disney’s The Seas with Nemo and Friends® and Castaway Cay were used to evaluate measurement of 1α-hydroxycorticosterone (1αOHB) relative to corticosterone (B). Although commercial EIAs are available …

Early Childhood Science And Engineering: Engaging Platforms For Fostering Domain-General Learning Skills, Andres S. Bustamante, Daryl B. Greenfield, Irena Nayfeld
ETSU Faculty Works
Early childhood science and engineering education offer a prime context to foster approaches-to-learning (ATL) and executive functioning (EF) by eliciting children’s natural curiosity about the world, providing a unique opportunity to engage children in hands-on learning experiences that promote critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, persistence, and other adaptive domain-general learning skills. Indeed, in any science experiment or engineering problem, children make observations, engage in collaborative conversations with teachers and peers, and think flexibly to come up with predictions or potential solutions to their problem. Inherent to science and engineering is the idea that one learns from initial failures within an …
Modeling Vocal Fold Intravascular Flow With Synthetic Replicas, Aaron David Terry
Modeling Vocal Fold Intravascular Flow With Synthetic Replicas, Aaron David Terry
Theses and Dissertations
Communication by voice is foundational in our society and many rely on their voices for their occupations. Voice disorders affect a significant number of individuals each year, and diagnosis and treatment improvements are therefore sought via advancements in voice research. Contained in this thesis is a description of work intended to contribute to vocal fold research by using synthetic, self-oscillating vocal fold replicas to study the impact of replica vibration on perfusion fluid flow through the replica. Methods for manufacturing vocal fold replicas containing imbedded channels allowing for fluid perfusion are discussed. Experimental procedures developed for delivering perfusion fluid to …

Pre-Clinical Pharmacology: An Important Aspect In Homoeopathic Research, Pankaj Gupta, E Sundaram, Mahima Sharma, Suneel Prajapati, B Arya, Anil Khurana, Raj Manchanda
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Background: Before the 20th century, research in Homeopathy was limited either for its proving in healthy human volunteers or to its clinical verification/clinical efficacy in diseased individuals. However, in recent years, there has been an increased trend in the number of pre-clinical studies aimed to evaluate the pharmacological activity produced by homeopathic medicines. The objective of this review is to make a systemic compilation of results of experimental pharmacological findings of homeopathic medicines, both in vitro and in animal models, and to present the same in a summarised form. Methods: Articles published up to March 2017 having information of in …

Simmering With Rage: Kitchens And Intimate Partner Violence In Eva Sørhaug’S 90 Minutes, Melissa Gjellstad
Simmering With Rage: Kitchens And Intimate Partner Violence In Eva Sørhaug’S 90 Minutes, Melissa Gjellstad
Languages & Global Studies Faculty Publications
This article examines domestic violence committed by white heterosexual men in a 2010s Norwegian film by a female director. This film stands out for its focus on male perpetrators, not female victims, contributing a fictional presentation of three men who struggle to meet societal norms for parents and partners in the Nordic gender-equal family of the twenty-first century. Eva Sørhaug’s use of cinematic space drills deep to probe the men’s pain, employing both the camera’s perspective and the significance of interiors of family homes to visually assess the male characters as they break. The socially constructed spaces of the kitchen …
