These dictricts were: Doyogena (Hawora Arara and Ancha Sadicha kebeles) of SNNPR from 30 and 31 May; and Menz Gera district (Sine Amba kebele) and Menz Mama district (Key Afer kebele) of Amhara from June 6–7. In Doyogena, the team held the conversations in farmer training centres (FTCs) …
Comparing Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Treatment Effect On Children’S Health-Related Quality Of Life, Yunru Lai
Comparing Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Treatment Effect On Children’S Health-Related Quality Of Life, Yunru Lai
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Surgical excision and laser are the two of the most commonly performed treatments for congenital melanocytic nevi, a type of birthmark present at birth or manifest infancy. Children with small to medium-sized congenital melanocytic nevi on the face and neck may elect treatment. However, there is no evidence-based guideline for the choice of treatment for small to medium-sized congenital melanocytic nevi that considers a child’s quality of life. We propose a non-randomized, open-label trial to compare the functional effect of surgical excision and laser treatment on the holistic wellbeing of school-aged children with head and neck congenital melanocytic nevi of …

Background: Using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach may increase the likelihood of relevance and acceptability of the designed intervention, especially on a college campus. Furthermore, recruiting and training college students to design a social marketing framed healthy lifestyle intervention for their peers will allow the intervention to be tailored to the needs of the campus. Objectives: To describe the process of online-course training college students to develop a campus-based, social marketing health promotion intervention. Methods: Four universities recruited current college students (18+ y.o.) to develop a social marketing and environmental intervention (SMEI), which was completed during a 16-week, online/in-person …

Evaluation Of A Lignin-Encapsulated Nootkatone Formulation Against Tetranychus Urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), Karla M. Addesso, Paul A. O'Neal, Shannen Leahy, Kevin Trostel, Robert W. Behle
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Botanical-based miticides, such as neem oil, are used in organic and conventional agronomic production as part of chemical rotation plans to suppress pest mite populations. Other plant-based compounds such as nootkatone (a component of essential oils distilled from grapefruit, Citrus paradisi Macfayden (Rutaceae), and Alaskan yellow cedar, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis [D. Don] Spach [Cupressaceae]), also may serve as effective organic miticides in crop production systems. We report on a lignin-encapsulated (LE) nootkatone formulation (previously effective at repelling ticks) that was evaluated as a miticide against the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). At an application rate of 1 g/L …
Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
When arriving to a social encounter, how and when can a person show how s/he is doing/feeling? This article answers this question, examining personal state sequences in copresent openings of casual (residential) and institutional (parent-teacher) encounters. Describing a regular way participants constitute – and move to expand – these sequences, this research shows how arrivers display a non-neutral (e.g., negative, humorous, positive) personal state by both (i) deploying interactionally-timed stance-marking embodiments that enact a non-neutral state, and (ii) invoking a selected previous activity/experience positioned as precipitating that non-neutral state. Data demonstrate that arrivers time their non-neutral personal state displays calibrated …

How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin” – either a new encounter, or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally-occurring, videorecorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Aims: We evaluated a Selective Bladder Denervation (SBD) device, which uses radiofrequency ablation, for the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome in terms of its nerve denervation, ablation characteristics, and post-treatment healing. Methods: Using the SBD device, eight fresh extirpated ovine bladder trigones were treated (90°C set point for 60 s) and nitroblue tetrazolium viability stained to characterize the ablation. In addition, 12 trigones were treated in vivo with three adjacent ablations and divided into survival cohorts: Day 7, Day 30, and Day 90 to assess the ablations and their associated healing. Results: The ex vivo single trigone ablations had a …
Predictors Of Preoperative Program Non-Completion In Adolescents Referred For Bariatric Surgery, Cassie Brode, Megan Ratcliff, Jennifer Reiter-Purtill, Sanita Hunsaker, Michael Helmrath, Meg Zeller
Predictors Of Preoperative Program Non-Completion In Adolescents Referred For Bariatric Surgery, Cassie Brode, Megan Ratcliff, Jennifer Reiter-Purtill, Sanita Hunsaker, Michael Helmrath, Meg Zeller
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Background—Factors contributing to adolescents’ non-completion of bariatric surgery, defined as self-withdrawal during the preoperative phase of care, independent of program or insurance denial, are largely unknown. Recent adolescent and adult bariatric surgery literature indicate that psychological factors and treatment withdrawal play a role; however, for adolescents, additional age-salient (family/caregiver) variables might also influence progression to surgery. Objectives—The present study examined demographic, psychological, and family/caregiver variables as predictors of whether adolescents completed surgery (“completers”) or withdrew from treatment (“non-completers”). Setting—Adolescents were from a bariatric surgery program within a pediatric tertiary care hospital. Methods—A retrospective chart review was conducted of consecutive patients …
Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: Ii. Wilhelm Reich As Transpersonal Psychologist. Part I: Context, Development, And Crisis In Reich’S Bio-Energetic Spiritual Psychology, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Wilhelm Reich is the focus of this second in a series of papers on a group of independent figures from the 1930s into the 1950s—also including Jung, the later Heidegger, Toynbee, Bergson, Teilhard de Chardin, and Simone Weil—who in the context of those years of crisis articulated overlapping visions of a future “New Age” spirituality that might in some more distant future serve to balance and even transform a globalizing materialism and disenchantment with traditional religion. The later Reich developed a highly original version of a “vitalistic” transpersonal psychology, as his “religion for the children of the future,” which needs …
The Necessary Conversation: Faith To Sustain Teaching Practices, Stephanie Talley
The Necessary Conversation: Faith To Sustain Teaching Practices, Stephanie Talley
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
In this essay, the author raises critical questions about the need for faith-based teacher preparation programs to consider engaging pre-service teachers in conversations about the connection between faith and the ability to persist in the work of teaching. Grounded in the ethic of care, the author suggests educators must begin with caring for self in order to maintain the ability of caring for students. Suggestions for Christian teacher education programs are explored.
Towards A Renewed Theology Of Personal Agency: Origen’S Theological Vision And The Challenges Of Fatalism And Determinism, Bernard B. Poggi
Towards A Renewed Theology Of Personal Agency: Origen’S Theological Vision And The Challenges Of Fatalism And Determinism, Bernard B. Poggi
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
In our own contemporary context, there seems to be nothing more important than for a person to be able to speak about their achievements as being specifically their own. Yet it seems that due to two trends found in theology and science, it is increasingly difficult to talk about individual agency. The first trend which undercuts human agency is found in theological fatalism.1 We will look at the case of theological fatalism found in Islamic thought in the idea of qadar, the power of God by which everything is commanded.2 The second trend comes to us on account …

Epigenetic Biomarkers For Alzheimer’S Disease Using A Transgenic Porcine Model, Yoon Hee Cho
Epigenetic Biomarkers For Alzheimer’S Disease Using A Transgenic Porcine Model, Yoon Hee Cho
University Grant Program Reports
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for approximately 60~70% of dementia cases. AD afflicts more than 35.6 million individuals worldwide and is expected to increase to 65.7 million by 2030 and 115.4 million by 2050 1; AD is a serious public health problem that is causing increased health care costs worldwide. Typically, AD is a relentlessly progressive disorder that initially manifests as severe loss of memory, particularly episodic memory.2 The disorder is not curable at present, and the mechanisms driving development of AD are not fully understood. Therefore, there is an urgent need …

Sex Differences Influencing Micro- And Macrovascular Endothelial Phenotype In Vitro, Virginia H. Huxley, Scott S. Kemp, Christine Schramm, Steve Sieveking, Susan Bingaman, Yang Yu, Isabella Zaniletti, Kevin Stockard, Jianjie Wang
College of Health and Human Services
Key points: Endothelial dysfunction is an early hallmark of multiple disease states that also display sex differences with respect to age of onset, frequency and severity. Results of in vivo studies of basal and stimulated microvascular barrier function revealed sex differences that are difficult to ascribe to specific cells or environmental factors. The present study evaluated endothelial cells (EC) isolated from macro- and/or microvessels of reproductively mature rats under the controlled conditions of low-passage culture aiming to test the assumption that EC phenotype would be sex independent. The primary finding was that EC, regardless of where they are derived, retain …
