The Conquest Of Pus -- A History Of Bitumen, Creosote And Carbolic Acid, Charles T. Ambrose
The Conquest Of Pus -- A History Of Bitumen, Creosote And Carbolic Acid, Charles T. Ambrose
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
In the Western world from antiquity on, open wounds were treated topically with petroleum-derived substances, such as bitumen, asphalt, pitch, and tar. The immediate aim was to stifle bleeding and ease pain but a potential benefit was preventing local corruption with pus formation. In the early 19th century, creosote was recovered from bitumen and found to reduce suppuration. Carbolic acid was later isolated from creosote and recognized as an underlying active agent. In the 1860s, carbolic acid was first employed by Jules Lemaire to treat local skin infections and later by Joseph Lister to prevent the suppuration in compound fractures. …

Improving Health Through Diet And Exercise In Children, Elaine Rush, Tara Coppinger
Improving Health Through Diet And Exercise In Children, Elaine Rush, Tara Coppinger
Publications
We know that nutritious foods and quality physical activity are two of the fundamental needs for normal growth and development of children. Food based dietary guidelines and physical activity recommendations have universal evidence base but the teaching of fundamental movement skills is limited without support. Given the importance of prevention of childhood obesity the distal drivers also need to be examined including poverty. Interventions trialled in carefully controlled conditions while shown to have efficacy are not effective in the real world. There is a need for more research and rigorous evaluation of interventions in combinations of settings and with innovative …
Examining How The Cd5 Co-Receptor Alters T Helper Cell Activation In Response To Bacterial Infection, Garrett Hamblin, Scott Weber
Examining How The Cd5 Co-Receptor Alters T Helper Cell Activation In Response To Bacterial Infection, Garrett Hamblin, Scott Weber
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Properly functioning helper T cells are crucial in a response to an infection. The adaptive immune response is orchestrated by T helper cells and their function is dependent upon interactions between the T cell receptor (TCR), peptide MHC (pMHC) and co-receptors. Upon TCR interaction with a foreign antigen, a calcium signaling cascade is initiated, which determines T cell activation, survival, proliferation and differentiation. CD5 is a T cell co-receptor that is a negative regulator of T cell activation. T cells with higher CD5 expression respond better to foreign antigen than those with lower CD5 expression. Cell-surface expression of CD5 is …
Synthesis Of A Novel Bicyclic Scaffold Inspired By The Antifungal Natural Product Sordarin, Yibiao Wu, Chris Dockendorff
Synthesis Of A Novel Bicyclic Scaffold Inspired By The Antifungal Natural Product Sordarin, Yibiao Wu, Chris Dockendorff
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
A simplified bicyclic scaffold inspired by the antifungal natural product sordarin was designed and synthesized which maintains the carboxylic acid/aldehyde (or nitrile) pharmacophore. Docking studies with the target for sordarin, the fungal protein eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2), suggested that the novel scaffolds may bind productively. A densely functionalized chiral cyclopentadiene was constructed in 8 steps and utilized in a Diels-Alder reaction with acrylonitrile. The resulting [2.2.1] cycloheptene was transformed into a scaffold possessing vicinal carboxylic acid and nitrile groups, with orientations predicted to provide high affinity for eEF2. The synthetic approach disclosed here sets the stage for a renewed …

Little Lasting Impact Of The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum On Shallow Marine Molluscan Faunas, Linda Ivany, Carlie Pietsch, John Handley, Rowan Lockwood, Warren Allmon, Jocelyn Sessa
Faculty Publications
Global warming, acidification, and oxygen stress at the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) are associated with severe extinction in the deep sea and major biogeographic and ecologic changes in planktonic and terrestrial ecosystems, yet impacts on shallow marine macrofaunas are obscured by the incompleteness of shelf sections. We analyze mollusk assemblages bracketing (but not including) the PETM and find few notable lasting impacts on diversity, turnover, functional ecology, body size, or life history of important clades. Infaunal and chemosymbiotic taxa become more common, and body size and abundance drop in one clade, consistent with hypoxia-driven selection, but within-clade changes are not …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Controlled Nitric Oxide Release From S-Nitroso-N-Acetyl-D-Penicillamine Covalently Linked To Polyvinyl Chloride (Snap-Pvc), Sean Hopkins, Megan C. Frost
Synthesis And Characterization Of Controlled Nitric Oxide Release From S-Nitroso-N-Acetyl-D-Penicillamine Covalently Linked To Polyvinyl Chloride (Snap-Pvc), Sean Hopkins, Megan C. Frost
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most widely used polymers in medicine but has very poor biocompatibility when in contact with tissue or blood. To increase biocompatibility, controlled release of nitric oxide (NO) can be utilized to mitigate and reduce the inflammatory response. A synthetic route is described where PVC is aminated to a specified degree and then further modified by covalently linking S-nitroso-N-acetyl-d-penicillamine (SNAP) groups to the free primary amine sites to create a nitric oxide releasing polymer (SNAP-PVC). Controllable release of NO from SNAP-PVC is described using photoinitiation from light emitting diodes (LEDs). Ion-mediated NO release is …

The Dilemma Of Humanitarian Intervention: Evaluating The Causes And Consequences Of The International Intervention In Libya Since 2011, Reem Mahmoud
Theses and Dissertations
“At this time of extreme challenges, we must not abandon the responsibility to protect or leave it in a state of suspended animation, finely articulated in words but breached time and again in practice.” António Guterres 2018. Since the 1990s, the international community has utilized a growing range of measures to protect populations from mass atrocities, war crimes, genocides and crimes against humanity; however, the numbers of victims, casualties and human losses are increasing daily all over the world. The international community is still unable to protect civilians most in need and those under real threat, even while applying the …

Using Bone Lead As A Biomarker For Lead Toxicity In Condors: Accuracy Of Portable L-X- Ray Fluorescence (Lxrf) Device To Quantify Lead (Pb) In Condor Bone In Vivo, Emma Wallens
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Our lab has been working on the development of a portable L- shell x-ray fluorescence (LXRF) device to quantify lead in bone in human in vivo. The purpose of this project is to determine the accuracy of the portable LXRF machine in measuring the lead content of condor bones in vivo. While the K-shell x-ray fluorescence (KXRF) machine is the most accurate machine to measure lead content in vivo because it has sufficient energy to overcome soft tissue attenuation, it is not very practical for use in a research lab with animals or for researchers covering a large migratory territory …
Perils Of Hollywood Whitewashing?: A Review Of 'Ghost In The Shell' Movie, Kosuke Mizukoshi
Perils Of Hollywood Whitewashing?: A Review Of 'Ghost In The Shell' Movie, Kosuke Mizukoshi
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
'Ghost in the Shell' was first produced as a Japanese animated film in 1995. The movie and its sequels established a cult status due to the philosophical depth in portraying the posthuman condition. It was remade as a live action Hollywood film in 2017; and this version failed at the box office. One reason had to be the “whitewashing” issue – that the female protagonist was played by a white actress in the Hollywood movie, rather than a Japanese character as in the original anime. This review essay critically discusses issues of whitewashing, racial ‘identity’, the shifting identity of the …
Revisiting The Creation Of Meaning By Media: A Perspective From Japan, Satoko Suzuki
Revisiting The Creation Of Meaning By Media: A Perspective From Japan, Satoko Suzuki
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This paper revisits the role of media in the meaning-construction system. In consumer research, media are often regarded as gatekeepers in the system. This paper focuses on the media’s other role -- as the creator of meanings. In this paper, an interpretive analysis of magazine articles regarding the ‘jibun e no gohoubi’ [self-reward] consumption since 1990 has been conducted. The findings indicate that the media had created the meanings of sacred and profane consumption acts, in the domain of self-reward consumption. In addition, the paper explores the influence of media in liberating and empowering Japanese women.

Does Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation To The Prefrontal Cortex Affect Social Behavior? A Meta-Analysis, Sarah Beth Bell, Nathan Dewall
Does Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation To The Prefrontal Cortex Affect Social Behavior? A Meta-Analysis, Sarah Beth Bell, Nathan Dewall
Psychology Faculty Publications
This meta-analysis (k = 48, N = 2196) examined the effect of transcranial direct current brain stimulation (tDCS) applied to the prefrontal cortex on a variety of social behaviors, including aggression, overeating, impulsivity, bias, honesty, and risk-taking. tDCS showed an overall significant effect on reducing undesirable behaviors, with an average effect size of d = −0.20. tDCS was most effective at reducing risk-taking behavior, bias, and overeating. tDCS did not affect aggression, impulsivity, or dishonesty. We examined moderators such as brain region of interest, online vs offline stimulation, within- vs between-subjects designs, dose, and duration, but none showed significant …

In Defense Of Openness, Bas Van Der Vossen, Jason Brennan
Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"The topic of global justice has long been a central concern within political philosophy and political theory, and there is no doubt that it will remain significant given the persistence of poverty on a massive scale and soaring global inequality. Yet, virtually every analysis in the vast literature of the subject seems ignorant of what developmental economists, both left and right, have to say about the issue. In Defense of Openness illuminates the problem by stressing that that there is overwhelming evidence that economic rights and freedom are necessary for development, and that global redistribution tends to hurt more than …
Multiaxial Mechanics Of Human Articular Cartilage In Health And Osteoarthritis, Franz Maier
Multiaxial Mechanics Of Human Articular Cartilage In Health And Osteoarthritis, Franz Maier
Doctoral Dissertations
Cartilage covers the articulating bones in all synovial joints throughout the body, providing a wear-resistant, low-friction surface. Complex interactions of solid (collagen and proteoglycans) and fluid (water and dissolved ions) maintain the tissue’s load- bearing properties. Osteoarthritis burdens approximately 20% of the population in the United States, and its prevalence is projected to increase. With progressing disease, the tissue’s constituents alter in composition and structure, resulting in a downward cascade of degeneration. In this work we determined the location dependent multiaxial properties of human cartilage. We found strain dependent anisotropy and significant inter-joint variability in mechanical strength and energy dissipation …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Versus Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing In Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Clinical Trials, Ali M. Khan, Sabrina Dar, Rizwan A. Ahmed, Ramya Bachu, Mahwish Adnan, Vijaya P. Kotapati
School of Medicine Publications
Background
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent in children, adolescents and adults. It can occur alone or in comorbidity with other disorders. A broad range of psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have been developed for the treatment of PTSD.
Aim
Through quantitative meta-analysis, we aimed to compare the efficacy of CBT and EMDR: (i) relieving the post-traumatic symptoms, and (ii) alleviating anxiety and depression, in patients with PTSD.
Methods
We systematically searched EMBASE, Medline and Cochrane central register of controlled trials (CENTRAL) for articles published between 1999 and December 2017. Randomized …

P/Q Type Calcium Channel Cav2.1 Defines A Unique Subset Of Glomeruli In The Mouse Olfactory Bulb, Martina Pyrski, Mahbuba Tusty, Eugenia Eckstein, Livio Oboti, Diego J. Rodriguez-Gil, Charles A. Greer, Frank Zufall
ETSU Faculty Works
Voltage-gated calcium (Cav) channels are a prerequisite for signal transmission at the first olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) synapse within the glomeruli of the main olfactory bulb (MOB). We showed previously that the N-type Cav channel subunit Cav2.2 is present in the vast majority of glomeruli and plays a central role in presynaptic transmitter release. Here, we identify a distinct subset of glomeruli in the MOB of adult mice that is characterized by expression of the P/Q-type channel subunit Cav2.1. Immunolocalization shows that Cav2.1+ glomeruli reside predominantly in the medial and dorsal MOB, and in the vicinity of the necklace glomerular …

Textual Privacy And Mobile Information, Simon Stern
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R v Marakah attempted to resolve the privacy status of text messages under section 8 of the Charter, but offered an incomplete solution because it failed to address the normative basis for protecting such communications. Despite the complexity of section 8 analysis (which itself is a product of multiple and inconsistent tests used to answer the same questions), the privacy of text messages allows for a relatively simple analysis. Normatively speaking, letters, email, and text messages all attract the same basic privacy interest, and should be treated analogously. However, if the police have …
Administrative Constitutionalism And The Unity Of Public Law, Matthew Lewans
Administrative Constitutionalism And The Unity Of Public Law, Matthew Lewans
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Public law scholarship in the common law tradition often aims at elucidating a connection between law and constitutional values like equality, due process, and the rule of law. However, in their quest to reveal the morality of public law, common lawyers often focus their attention on judicial interpretations of constitutional values to the exclusion of other sources of constitutional jurisprudence. The author argues that the traditional fascination with courts as the primary or exclusive arbiters of constitutional values should be tempered and supplemented by recognizing the valuable contributions of administrative officials who interpret and enforce constitutional norms when exercising statutorily …
