California Sea Urchin Commission V. Bean, Thomas C. Mooney-Myers Sep 2018

California Sea Urchin Commission V. Bean, Thomas C. Mooney-Myers

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In California Sea Urchin Commission v. Bean, the Ninth Circuit upheld the Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to end an experimental sea otter colony and translocation program. Commercial fishing groups sought reversal of the decision due to their interest in maintaining the translocation program which reduced otter predation on commercially valuable shellfish. While the Ninth Circuit held the group had standing, it then applied the Chevron test and determined the agency’s actions were reasonable.

Comparative Investigations Of Social Context-Dependent Dominance In Captive Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes) And Wild Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Jake A. Funkhouser, Jessica A. Mayhew, Lori K. Sheeran, John B. Mulcahy, Jin-Hua Lee Sep 2018

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Theoretical definitions of dominance, how dominance is structured and organized in nature, and how dominance is measured have varied as investigators seek to classify and organize social systems in gregarious species. Given the variability in behavioral measures and statistical methods used to derive dominance rankings, we conducted a comparative analysis of dominance using existing statistical techniques to analyze dominance ranks, social context-dependent dominance structures, the reliability of statistical analyses, and rank predictability of dominance structures on other social behaviors. We investigated these topics using behavioral data from captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and wild Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana). We used a …

Searching Images And The Meaning Of Alarm Calls, Alan B. Bond Sep 2018

Searching Images And The Meaning Of Alarm Calls, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

The snake alarm call of Japanese tits prompts nesting adults to search for and mob the reptile until it is driven away. From playback experiments, Suzuki (2018) has inferred that the call provides an associative cue, evoking a searching image of the salient visual features of the predator—a novel approach to exploring visual attention and vocal communication in the wild.

Extracellular Interactions Between Fibulins And Transforming Growth Factor (Tgf)-Β In Physiological And Pathological Conditions., Takeshi Tsuda Sep 2018

Extracellular Interactions Between Fibulins And Transforming Growth Factor (Tgf)-Β In Physiological And Pathological Conditions., Takeshi Tsuda

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is a multifunctional peptide growth factor that has a vital role in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, inflammation, and repair in a variety of tissues, and its dysregulation mediates a number of pathological conditions including fibrotic disorders, chronic inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer progression. Regulation of TGF-β signaling is multifold, but one critical site of regulation is via interaction with certain extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironments, as TGF-β is primarily secreted as a biologically inactive form sequestrated into ECM. Several ECM proteins are known to modulate TGF-β signaling via cell⁻matrix interactions, including thrombospondins, SPARC (Secreted Protein …

Tweeting A Social Movement: Black Lives Matter And Its Use Of Twitter To Share Information, Build Community, And Promote Action, Candice Lashara Edrington, Nicole Lee

Faculty Publications

Public relations research has gradually incorporated the study of advocacy organizations. However, little research has focused on social movements in particular. Through a content analysis of all public tweets sent by Black Lives Matter (BLM) over a four-year period, this study examined the message strategies used on Twitter by the social movement as a means to share information, build community, and promote action. Consistent with research on other types of organizations, informational messages proved to be the most common. The study also analyzed the influence that these strategies had on audience engagement in terms of replies and retweets. Findings suggest …

The 'Happiest' Corner Of London: Bethnal Green, 1550-1945, Audrey Lynne Gray Sep 2018

The 'Happiest' Corner Of London: Bethnal Green, 1550-1945, Audrey Lynne Gray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

How is a cultural identity created, defined, and used? In this study, I have traced Bethnal Green’s cultural identity in the period between 1550 and1945. It was a cultural identity defined by poverty, but also by hope; residents were poor but scrappy, able to make do with the worst of circumstances. That cultural identity defined the area to outsiders; it was also embraced by the residents. Following the area’s path from an idyllic and genteel area to an overcrowded slum, I have traced the experience of poverty, and the development and impact of poverty relief, from the perspective of both …

Epigenetics, Heritability And Longitudinal Analysis, Haakon E. Nustad, Marcio Almeida, Angelo J. Canty, Marissa Leblanc, Christian M. Page, Phillip E. Melton

School of Medicine Publications

Background

Longitudinal data and repeated measurements in epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) provide a rich resource for understanding epigenetics. We summarize 7 analytical approaches to the GAW20 data sets that addressed challenges and potential applications of phenotypic and epigenetic data. All contributions used the GAW20 real data set and employed either linear mixed effect (LME) models or marginal models through generalized estimating equations (GEE). These contributions were subdivided into 3 categories: (a) quality control (QC) methods for DNA methylation data; (b) heritability estimates pretreatment and posttreatment with fenofibrate; and (c) impact of drug response pretreatment and posttreatment with fenofibrate on DNA …

Reliability Of Genomic Predictions Of Complex Human Phenotypes, Arthur Porto, Juan M. Peralta, Nicholas B. Blackburn, John Blangero Sep 2018

Reliability Of Genomic Predictions Of Complex Human Phenotypes, Arthur Porto, Juan M. Peralta, Nicholas B. Blackburn, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Genome-wide association studies have helped us identify a wealth of genetic variants associated with complex human phenotypes. Because most variants explain a small portion of the total phenotypic variation, however, marker-based studies remain limited in their ability to predict such phenotypes. Here, we show how modern statistical genetic techniques borrowed from animal breeding can be employed to increase the accuracy of genomic prediction of complex phenotypes and the power of genetic mapping studies.

Specifically, using the triglyceride data of the GAW20 data set, we apply genomic-best linear unbiased prediction (G-BLUP) methods to obtain empirical genetic values (EGVs) for each triglyceride …

Philanthropy At Parkside Elementary School: The Kindness Project, Ron Morris

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Democratic citizenship reflected an underlying philosophy of interactions between competing values such as enculturation, invention, community, individuality, order, and freedom. Students who did not investigate the underlying values of their service learning participated in indoctrination programs an idea repugnant in democratic education. Teachers provided students with opportunities to think and question as they practiced the skills they used as a citizen in the community. Fourth grade students engaged in a service learning project reflected the experience of democratic citizenship. Students navigated these values in service learning project to learn to enrich the commonwealth of their classroom, school, and extended community …

Doing Laundry With B.F. Skinner, Sarah Press Dickerson Sep 2018

Doing Laundry With B.F. Skinner, Sarah Press Dickerson

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I don't mind doing laundry — it's clean and warm at the finish. But what will make me madder than a linen skirt in hot water is finding clean laundry thrown in with the dirty because a teenager doesn't want to take the time to put it away. I try not to take it personally, but I fail. I mean, who raised these hooligans? Aren't millennials supposed to be up in arms about the environment? This is a waste of water, electricity, detergent — and most of all, my time.

Marine Macroalgae: Prospective Hitchhikers Of Ship Ballast, Imchen Temjensangba Sep 2018

Marine Macroalgae: Prospective Hitchhikers Of Ship Ballast, Imchen Temjensangba

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Invasive alien species, on successful establishment, can displace native species. The threat of invasive species arises in view of their ability to outcompete and destabilize native biodiversity. Invasive species are found across all taxonomic groups of plants, animals and microorganisms. The green macroalga Ulva flexuosa has a potential to become invasive and this species was investigated for its hitchhiking potential under laboratory conditions. Zoospores of U. flexuosa were maintained at 4°C for nearly 10 months in the dark. Recruitment potential of zoospores after dark stress was tested in a modified Provasoli medium under optimal laboratoryconditions. The success rate of zoospore …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

We investigated plankton composition and water quality of ballast water from seven international ships docked at Kertih Port, Malaysia. Coscinodiscophyceae and cyanobacteria were the dominant phytoplankton found in ballast water samples, whereas copepod nauplii, Oithona sp., Microstella sp. and Paracalanus sp. were the dominant zooplankton. The densities for both phytoplankton and zooplankton in ships’ ballast and port waters were higher than those of offshore samples. All water quality parameters (except Cr) of port samples were within the safety levels prescribed for ports, oil and gas fields (Class 3) by the Malaysia Marine Water Quality Criteria Standard. The study of fouling …

Biofouling Community Structure In A Tropical Estuary Of Goa On The West Coast Of India, Desai Dattesh V, Krishnamurthy Venkat, Anil Arga Chandrashekar

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Biofouling community structure was studied in a tropical monsoon-influenced Mandovi estuary in Goa, west coast of India. Monthly, seasonal and yearly observations on biofouling on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) panels immersed at subsurface water level were recorded and photographed from May 2012 to September 2013. The barnacle Balanus amphitrite was the dominant fouling organism followed by calcareous polychaetes. The settlement and recruitment of barnacles took place year-round, with the exception of July 2012 and June 2013 (monsoon months). However, their peak abundance was observed during the later months of monsoon (August and September). Polychaetes were dominant during late post-monsoon and pre-monsoon …

© 2018 Elsevier Inc. The present study explores alternate pericyclic chemistries for tethering amine-terminal biomolecules onto silver nanoparticles. Employing the versatile tool of the retro-Diels-Alder (rDA) reaction, three thermally-labile cycloadducts are constructed that cleave at variable temperature ranges. While the reaction between furan and maleimide has widely been reported, the current study also evaluates the reverse reaction kinetics between thiophene-maleimide, and pyrrole-maleimide cycloadducts. Density Functional Theorem (DFT) calculations used to model and plan the experiments, predict energy barriers for the thiophene-maleimide reverse reaction to be greatest, and the pyrrole-maleimide barriers the lowest. Based on the computational analyses, it is projected …

Role Of Reporting In Compliance Monitoring And Enforcement Of Ballast Water Management, Mapari Kaushal E., Krishnamurty Venkat, Anil Arga Chandrashekar Sep 2018

Role Of Reporting In Compliance Monitoring And Enforcement Of Ballast Water Management, Mapari Kaushal E., Krishnamurty Venkat, Anil Arga Chandrashekar

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The Decision Support System (DSS) for ballast water management in any given port is dependent on the availability of information on ballast water carried by a ship in advance. Collation of information through Ballast Water Reporting Forms (BWRF) has been adopted by several countries. This paper provides a comparison of the reporting forms adopted by some of the countries and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recommended BWRF. The manually submitted reporting forms have several limitations and India has developed a self-validating Electronic Ballast Water Reporting Form (e-BWRF) to overcome such issues. In addition, the possible direction for reporting in the …

Numerical Modelling Of Ballast Water Dispersion In Different Bioregions Along The Coast Of India, Babu M.T., Sudheesh K, Vethamony P, Anuvindha S Sep 2018

Numerical Modelling Of Ballast Water Dispersion In Different Bioregions Along The Coast Of India, Babu M.T., Sudheesh K, Vethamony P, Anuvindha S

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Aquatic organisms and pathogens may become major threats to the coastal and marine environment when introduced into a region beyond their natural distributions through ballast water (BW). Coastal currents induced by tides and winds, especially ebb currents, may facilitate the spread of these marine organisms along nearshore and inshore areas. Numerical modelling of hydrodynamics is an effective tool to track the dispersion of these organisms in the receiving water body through BW release. Particle transport models can be used to track the advection and dispersion of these organisms. Alternatively, the difference in salinity of the BW and coastal waters can …

Fouling Polychaetes In Tanjung Priok Port Of Jakarta, Indonesia, Hadiyanto Hadiyanto Sep 2018

Fouling Polychaetes In Tanjung Priok Port Of Jakarta, Indonesia, Hadiyanto Hadiyanto

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Fouling polychaetes in Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta and their status were studied in order to update the list of marine alien species in Indonesia. Polychaetes were collected using six PVC panels that were submerged at a depth of 0.5 m over three months in Jakarta Bay. Polychaetes were identified to the lowest taxon possible based on characteristics of external morphology. The geographical distribution of identified polychaetes was then determined based on taxonomic literature in order to justify whether they were native or alien species for Indonesian waters. Twelve fouling polychaetes belonging to nine families are reported here. Of these, nine …

Challenges In Managing Marine Bio-Invasions Via Shipping In Singapore, Sing Lim Chin, Tan Koh Siang

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The economic, social and environmental impacts arising from the transfer and establishment of non indigenous marine species (NIMS) mediated through ship hull biofouling and ballast water discharges in the coastal marine environment require a regional approach to manage bio-invasions. As the coordinating body for maritime shipping affairs and protection of the marine environment, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been working with member states to adopt and ratify global conventions aimed at preventing invasive species transfer through shipping. As a major shipping hub and port-of-call in Southeast Asia, Singapore faces multiple challenges in managing marine bio-invasions including managing the transit …
