Where The Weather Comes From, Morgan Vanek Sep 2018

Where The Weather Comes From, Morgan Vanek

The Goose

When Andreas Malm observed that “not even the weather belongs fully to the moment,” he was looking forward from 2016, considering the cumulative impact of present emissions on “generations not yet born.” The reverse is also true: present storms have their origins in past consumption. Up to this point, though, analysis of how human activity will intensify future weather has focused on change in a limited set of quantifiable conditions, like precipitation and temperature – and in this respect, too, the weather of the present is the weather of the past. Both this set of variables and its status as …

Astrocyte Activation And The Calcineurin/Nfat Pathway In Cerebrovascular Disease, Susan D. Kraner, Christopher M. Norris Sep 2018

Astrocyte Activation And The Calcineurin/Nfat Pathway In Cerebrovascular Disease, Susan D. Kraner, Christopher M. Norris

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Calcineurin (CN) is a Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase with high abundance in nervous tissue. Though enriched in neurons, CN can become strongly induced in subsets of activated astrocytes under different pathological conditions where it interacts extensively with the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFATs). Recent work has shown that regions of small vessel damage are associated with the upregulation of a proteolized, highly active form of CN in nearby astrocytes, suggesting a link between the CN/NFAT pathway and chronic cerebrovascular disease. In this Mini Review article, we discuss CN/NFAT signaling properties in the context of vascular disease and …

W.E.B. Dubois For The Twenty‐First Century: On Being A Scholar‐Activist In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels Sep 2018

W.E.B. Dubois For The Twenty‐First Century: On Being A Scholar‐Activist In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

W.E.B. Du Bois began his work as a scholar-activist at the dawn of the twentieth century, and this paper argues that his example has much to teach contemporary scholar-activists in the twenty-first century. In order to publish The Crisis, the magazine of the activist organization he co-founded, DuBois purchased a printing press. This meant he could own the means of his own knowledge production and foretold both the promise of what it means to be a scholar-activist in the twenty-first century and the limitations built into the current systems of knowledge production. Du Bois was also prophetic when he …

Effect Of Larval Starvation On Lipid Content Of Drosophila Melanogaster Over 15 Days, Fabian Leija, Allen Gibbs Sep 2018

Effect Of Larval Starvation On Lipid Content Of Drosophila Melanogaster Over 15 Days, Fabian Leija, Allen Gibbs

LSAMP Poster Presentations

Starvation-resistant Drosophila melanogaster, common fruit flies, deriving from 121 generations of starvation selection, have resulted in genetically, behaviorally, and physiologically different individuals compared to non-resistant counterparts. Starvation-resistant Drosophila are more obese, containing twice as much lipids as control flies. This is a result of starvation-resistant fly larva feeding for 5 days and then entering the pupa stage while non-resistant flies only feed for 4 days.

In this experiment, we hope to answer the question of whether the starvation-resistant flies are genetically predisposed to be substantially more obese than wild populations or if it is a result of this alternate behavior …

Systematic Review On The Effects Of Climate On Auditory Bullae Size In Geographically Overlapping Perognathus Species, Sirima Lavangnananda, Sean Neiswenter Sep 2018

Systematic Review On The Effects Of Climate On Auditory Bullae Size In Geographically Overlapping Perognathus Species, Sirima Lavangnananda, Sean Neiswenter

LSAMP Poster Presentations

The purpose of our summer research is to compile results and trends observed in previous studies to better understand the function of auditory bullae, the variations in size and shape throughout the overlapping geographic distribution of Perognathus species, and the relationship between bullar size and climatic patterns. Our research found that there is a negative correlation between auditory bullae size and the amount of moisture in the habitat. Large and inflated auditory bullae are observed in arid and open habitats. Although there are conflicting evidence on whether or not auditory bullae inflation is directly driven by the lack of precipitation, …

Continuous Theta Rhythm During Spatial Working Memory Task In Rodent Models Of Streptozotocin-Induced Type 2 Diabetes, Stephanie Hernandez, Ryan A. Wirt, James M. Hyman

McNair Poster Presentations

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder altering memory loss thought to be due to neuropathological symptoms such as the buildup of beta amyloid plaques (Ab) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). The etiology of Alzheimer’s is still unknown; however, potential risk factors such as diabetes may lead to its development. The most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes known for persistent insulin resistance leading to a state of hyperglycemia. Insulin resistance has been shown to affect cognitive abilities such as learning, memory and also alters synaptic plasticity. Neural connections between the hippocampus (HC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are known …

Investigation Of Mexican-American Attitudes Towards Pet Dogs, Deisy Landeros, Shelly Volsche Sep 2018

Investigation Of Mexican-American Attitudes Towards Pet Dogs, Deisy Landeros, Shelly Volsche

McNair Poster Presentations

From wild wolves to ‘fur babies,’ dogs have transcended their relationships with humans after years of domestication and evolved pet keeping dynamics. This research study explores human and dog relationships through cultural perspectives. My research specifically targets the Mexican-American population in Las Vegas in order to understand diverse attitudes towards dogs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether there are more positive attitudes towards pet dogs within Mexican communities, or if negative attitudes are still present like they have been in past Mexican traditions. While previous studies have presented increasing dog attachment bonds within Americans, I will instead …

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Background: Social isolation in the elderly is one of the principal health risks in an aging society. Physical environmental enrichment is shown to improve sensory, cognitive, and motor functions, but it is unknown whether environmental enrichment can protect against brain impairments caused by social isolation.

Methods: Eighteen-month-old mice were housed, either grouped or isolated, in a standard or enriched environment for 2 months, respectively. Behavioral tests were performed to evaluate cognitive functional and social interaction ability. Synaptic protein levels, myelination, neuroinflammation, brain derived neurotrophic factor, and NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome signaling pathways were examined in the medial prefrontal cortex …

North African Regular And Irregular Migration: The Case Of Libya, Mustafa O. Attir Sep 2018

North African Regular And Irregular Migration: The Case Of Libya, Mustafa O. Attir

New England Journal of Public Policy

Because of its geographical size and location, Libya has for centuries been a transit county for human movement across the region. Thus, its experience with immigrants has a long history. In the early 1970s, Libya became a destination for foreigners seeking jobs. Some entered the country legally, others illegally. All came to work, live, and send remittances back to their families. During the 1990s, when many migrants used Libya as a transit country for crossing the sea to Europe, the European Union started negotiating with the Libyan government to curb the flow of irregular migrants. In 2011, the country joined …

Clinical Perspective On Passive Audio Vocal Measurement In The Evaluation Of Selective Mutism., Helen Y Xu, Jacob Stroud, Renee K. Jozanovic, Jon Clucas, Jake Jungwoo Son, Bonhwang Koo, Juliet Schwarz, Arno Klein, Rachel Busman, Michael P. Milham Sep 2018

Clinical Perspective On Passive Audio Vocal Measurement In The Evaluation Of Selective Mutism., Helen Y Xu, Jacob Stroud, Renee K. Jozanovic, Jon Clucas, Jake Jungwoo Son, Bonhwang Koo, Juliet Schwarz, Arno Klein, Rachel Busman, Michael P. Milham

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder often diagnosed in early childhood and characterized by persistent failure to speak in certain social situations but not others. Diagnosing SM and monitoring treatment response can be quite complex, due in part to changing definitions of and scarcity of research about the disorder. Subjective self-reports and parent/teacher interviews can complicate SM diagnosis and therapy, given that similar speech problems of etiologically heterogeneous origin can be attributed to SM. The present perspective discusses the potential for passive audio capture to help overcome psychiatry's current lack of objective and quantifiable assessments in the context of …

What Can Computational Modeling Tell Us About The Diversity Of Odor-Capture Structures In The Pancrustacea?, Lindsay D. Waldrop, Yanyan He, Shilpa Khatri Sep 2018

What Can Computational Modeling Tell Us About The Diversity Of Odor-Capture Structures In The Pancrustacea?, Lindsay D. Waldrop, Yanyan He, Shilpa Khatri

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

A major transition in the history of the Pancrustacea was the invasion of several lineages of these animals onto land. We investigated the functional performance of odor-capture organs, antennae with olfactory sensilla arrays, through the use of a computational model of advection and diffusion of odorants to olfactory sensilla while varying three parameters thought to be important to odor capture (Reynolds number, gap-width-to-sensillum-diameter ratio, and angle of the sensilla array with respect to oncoming flow). We also performed a sensitivity analysis on these parameters using uncertainty quantification to analyze their relative contributions to odor-capture performance. The results of this analysis …

School of Medicine Publications

Ras/Raf/MEKs/ERKs and PI3 K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathways have key roles in cancer development and growth processes, as well as in cancer malignance and chemoresistance. In this study, we screened the therapeutic potential of magnolin using 15 human cancer cell lines and combined magnolin sensitivity with the CCLE mutaome analysis for relevant mutation information. The results showed that magnolin efficacy on cell proliferation inhibition were lower in TOV‐112D ovarian cancer cells than that in SKOV3 cells by G1 and G2/M cell cycle phase accumulation. Notably, magnolin suppressed colony growth of TOV‐112D cells in soft agar, whereas colony growth of SKOV3 cells in …

A large body of evidence indicates that evolutionary innovations of novel organs have facilitated the subsequent diversification of species. Investigation of the evolutionary history of such organs should provide important clues for understanding the basis for species diversification. An Asian natricine snake, Rhabdophis tigrinus, possesses a series of unusual organs, called nuchal glands, which contain cardiotonic steroid toxins known as bufadienolides. Rhabdophis tigrinus sequesters bufadienolides from its toad prey and stores them in the nuchal glands as a defensive mechanism. Among more than 3,500 species of snakes, only 17 Asian natricine species are known to possess nuchal glands or …

Rights In A Cloud Of Dust: The Value And Qualities Of Farm Data And How Its Property Rights Should Be Viewed Moving Forward, Zachary R. Trail Sep 2018

Rights In A Cloud Of Dust: The Value And Qualities Of Farm Data And How Its Property Rights Should Be Viewed Moving Forward, Zachary R. Trail

Arkansas Law Review

Historically, technology growth has been slower in agriculture than other industries. However, a rising demand for food and an increase in efficient farm practices has changed this, leading to a rise in precision farming technologies. Now, entities that provide services or information to farmers need precision farming technologies to compete, and more farmers are adopting precision farming technologies. These technologies help farmers, but questions still remain about ownership rights in the data that farmers create.

What Does Law Have To Do With It? The Jury's Role In Cases Alleging Violations Of Law, Custom And Standards, Barbara Kritchevsky Sep 2018

What Does Law Have To Do With It? The Jury's Role In Cases Alleging Violations Of Law, Custom And Standards, Barbara Kritchevsky

Arkansas Law Review

Rules telling people how to act come from many sources. Statutory law governs a wide range of conduct—driving an auto-mobile, operating a business, building a home. Non-governmental standards reach just as far. Individuals run their businesses in accordance with the law, but also by observing professional standards and industry customs. A hotel owner might look to state or local law to determine how to fence the hotel pool or whether to have a lifeguard on duty. The owner might also decide what to do by looking to industry customs or non-govern-mental safety guidelines, such as those a private body has …

Application And Prospect Of Molecular Module-Based Crop Design Technology In Maize Breeding, Hao Huaiqing, Liu Lili, Yao Yuan, Feng Xue, Li Zhigang, Chao Qing, Xia Ran, Liu Hongtao, Wang Baichen, Qin Feng, Xie Qi, Jing Haichun

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Maize is one of the most important food crops and plays a decisive role in the people's livelihood and national economy in China. Its sustained and stable production is of great strategic significance for ensuring food security and supply-side structural reform. Although traditional hybrid breeding technology has made a great contribution to increasing maize production, it can no longer satisfy the demand for a better life of current society. With the rapid development of modern biotechnology, molecular breeding has become an important direction and an inevitable choice for maize breeding, and the molecular module-based crop design technology, by combining multiple …

A Field Guide For Weathering: Embodied Tactics For Collectives Of Two Or More Humans, Jennifer Mae Hamilton, Astrida Neimanis

The Goose

In our inherited meteorological practices and frameworks, weather conditions are managed for us in a range of ways (for example, through architecture, technology, commodity culture, infrastructure, economic rationale). This field guide brings the weather back to the body. A traditional field guide provides tools for the individual sovereign human subject to observe and document nature “over there”. In contrast, through a range of different activities, our field guide not only invites investigation and cataloguing of the field that we also comprise, but also challenges what counts as a noteworthy observation regarding the weather and also climate.
