Public Health And Well-Being Innovation In The Natural Environment Sector: Lessons From The Uk And Finland, J Tredinnick-Rowe, T Taylor, A Tuohino Sep 2018

Public Health And Well-Being Innovation In The Natural Environment Sector: Lessons From The Uk And Finland, J Tredinnick-Rowe, T Taylor, A Tuohino

Peninsula Medical School

Thirty-one ethnographic interviews were conducted with health and well-being sector businesses to examine the dynamics of innovation in the UK (Cornwall) and across Finland. The Nordic countries are at the leading edge of these types of public health nature-based interventions, consequently, Finland was chosen as a comparator to the UK. We found that the construction of natural environment based services for health and well-being follows a five-step model: (1) Services are specifically designed for individuals’ needs; (2) These services are based around routine behaviours of that individual and their personal and social habits; (3) This creates a process of normalisation …

As-860-19 Resolution On Senior Project Policy, Dawn Janke Sep 2018

As-860-19 Resolution On Senior Project Policy, Dawn Janke

Academic Senate Resolutions

The current designation for senior project courses is non-standardized; therefore, be it that the attached policy supersedes AS-562-01, AS-594-03, and AS-683-09; and be it further that the university adopt a standard designation for senior project courses across the curriculum, either by returning to the former practice wherein the second course digit of 6 or 7 indicates a senior project course or by requiring that every senior project course has "Senior Project" in its title.

Antitrust's Unconventional Politics, Daniel A. Crane Sep 2018

Antitrust's Unconventional Politics, Daniel A. Crane

Articles

Antitrust law stands at its most fluid and negotiable moment in a generation. The bipartisan consensus that antitrust should solely focus on economic efficiency and consumer welfare has quite suddenly come under attack from prominent voices calling for a dramatically enhanced role for antitrust law in mediating a variety of social, economic, and political friction points, including employment, wealth inequality, data privacy and security, and democratic values. To the bewilderment of many observers, the ascendant pressures for antitrust reforms are flowing from both wings of the political spectrum, throwing into confusion a conventional understanding that pro-antitrust sentiment tacked left and …

A Requirement For Slc15a4 In Imiquimod-Induced Systemic Inflammation And Psoriasiform Inflammation In Mice, Alexis D. Griffith, Asifa K. Zaidi, Ashley Pietro, Matthew Hadiono, Jessica S. Yang, Rachel Davis, Daniel L. Popkin Sep 2018

A Requirement For Slc15a4 In Imiquimod-Induced Systemic Inflammation And Psoriasiform Inflammation In Mice, Alexis D. Griffith, Asifa K. Zaidi, Ashley Pietro, Matthew Hadiono, Jessica S. Yang, Rachel Davis, Daniel L. Popkin

Faculty Publications

There is competing evidence that plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC), the most potent source of IFN-I, may initiate psoriasis. We targeted pDC function using the slc15a4 loss-of-function mouse whose pDC are unresponsive to TLR agonists. slc15a4 treated with the topical TLR7-agonist imiquimod (IMQ) demonstrated decreased epidermal thickening 24 hours post-treatment which was more pronounced by day 5 as compared to wildtype mice. These findings were specific to the acute IMQ model and not the protracted IL23 model that drives inflammation downstream of TLR activation. Systemically, slc15a4 was required for IMQ-induced weight loss and cutaneous accumulation of CD4+ and Siglec H+, but …

Forage Potential Of Summer Annual Grain Legumes In The Southern Great Plains, Gurjinder S. Baath, Brian K. Northup, Alexandre C. Rocateli, Prasanna H. Gowda, James P. S. Neel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and perennial warm-season grasses are the primary forage resources for grazing yearling stocker cattle (Bos taurus) in the US Southern Great Plains (SGP). However, low nutritive value of perennial grasses during mid to late summer limits high rates of growth by stocker cattle. In response, there has been a continued search for plant materials with the potential to provide forage high in crude protein (CP) and digestibility during August through September. A broad range of under-utilized legume species that are grown as grain crops in Africa, India, and South and Central America may have some …

The Effect Of Nr4a3 On Functional Beta Cell Mass, Jeffery S. Tessem Sep 2018

The Effect Of Nr4a3 On Functional Beta Cell Mass, Jeffery S. Tessem

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The academic objectives of this Mentoring Environment Grant (MEG) were to 1) train undergraduate students in the scientific process to prepare them in careers as physicians and scientists, and 2) to determine if the in vitro phenotypes observed in Nr4a3 deficient beta cell lines are translatable to the Nr4a3 KO mouse. . We were successful in accomplishing these objectives, as evidenced by the training of four undergraduate students, presentation of research and local and national meetings, and initial preparation of a manuscript reporting our findings. While we did have difficulty breeding these mice, this study gives us the basis of …

Neuroprotective Role Of Phytochemicals., Bharath Kumar Velmurugan, Baskaran Rathinasamy, Bharathi Priya Lohanathan, Varadharajan Thiyagarajan, Ching-Feng Weng

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Neurodegenerative diseases are normally distinguished as disorders with loss of neurons. Various compounds are being tested to treat neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) but they possess solitary symptomatic advantages with numerous side effects. Accumulative studies have been conducted to validate the benefit of phytochemicals to treat neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). In this present review we explored the potential efficacy of phytochemicals such as epigallocatechin-3-galate, berberin, curcumin, resveratrol, quercetin and limonoids against the most common NDs, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). The beneficial potentials of these phytochemicals have been demonstrated by evidence-based but more …

Ecological Priming Of Artificial Aquaculture Structures: Kelp Farms As An Example, Am Walls, Md Edwards, Lb Firth, Mp Johnson Sep 2018

Ecological Priming Of Artificial Aquaculture Structures: Kelp Farms As An Example, Am Walls, Md Edwards, Lb Firth, Mp Johnson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Copyright © Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 2018. The continued development of the aquaculture industry is contributing to the proliferation of artificial structures in the marine environment. Observations of seaweed farms (infrastructure and biomass) suggest they act as a habitat for associated species. Seaweed farms differ from other forms of artificial infrastructure as the material deployed already has marine organisms (i.e. culture species) growing on it. This 'priming' of ropes with juvenile sporophytes may affect future development of communities by facilitating colonizing species or suppressing competitors. We call this process 'ecological priming': the provision of a biological platform …
