The Fear Of The Known : Horror Media And The Use Of Fear To Maintain Power, Dana Peterson Jan 2018

The Fear Of The Known : Horror Media And The Use Of Fear To Maintain Power, Dana Peterson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A new subgenre has begun emerging in the horror genre: "woke horror." Texts within this subgenre reflect the increased awareness of injustices against minority groups in American society. Prior research on horror has long connected the fears presented onscreen with real-life social anxieties of the time. Utilizing an intersectional framework that is concerned with racial, gender, and sexual orientation minorities, I engaged in a discourse analysis of three woke horror texts from 2017: American Horror Story: Cult, The Handmaid's Tale, and Get Out. Through multiple rounds of coding, I was able to uncover a variety of themes that distinguish who …

Easing Growing Pains: Supporting The Growth Of Small Businesses In The Philippines, Paulynne Castillo Jan 2018

Easing Growing Pains: Supporting The Growth Of Small Businesses In The Philippines, Paulynne Castillo

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

In explaining the 2015 survey findings that the Philippines has the second to the lowest existing business rate in the ASEAN region, the Philippine Entrepreneurship Report, 2015-16 stated that “business operations become more burdensome as they grow due to the more restrictive regulations on large enterprises” (Velasco et al., 2017, p. 40). Established businesses, particularly firms operating in the formal sector, shoulder higher taxes and are subject to social security contributions, minimum wage, and industry-specific regulations (Velasco et al., 2017; Auriol, 2014).

Strengthening early-stage entrepreneurial activities and supporting their quest for expansion, however, require access to financial, legal, and public …

Proteomic Effects Of Wet Cupping (Al-Hijamah), Amer A. Almaiman Jan 2018

Proteomic Effects Of Wet Cupping (Al-Hijamah), Amer A. Almaiman

Saudi Medical Journal

Wet cupping (Al-hijamah) is a therapeutic technique practiced worldwide as a part of the Unani system of medicine. It involves bloodletting from acupoints on a patient’s skin to produce a therapeutic outcome. A thorough review of research articles on wet cupping with relevance to proteomics field that are indexed by Google Scholar, PubMed, and/or Science Direct databases was performed. Eight original research articles were summarized in this paper. Overall, wet cupping did not have a significant effect on C-reactive protein, Hsp-27, sister chromatid exchanges, and cell replication index. In contrast, wet cupping was found to produce higher oxygen saturation, eliminate …

Homonymy And The Comparability Of Goods In Aristotle, Robert Duncan Jan 2018

Homonymy And The Comparability Of Goods In Aristotle, Robert Duncan

Dissertations

My dissertation will draw attention to an underexplored problem in Aristotle's theory of the good and advance two alternative proposals about how it can be solved. Aristotle endorses an inconsistent triad of premises concerning homonymy, comparability, and goodness. First, he argues that the good is homonymous: there is no single characteristic, goodness, which is shared by all good things. Rather, he argues that different kinds of good things require different accounts specifying what it is for them to be good. Second, he holds that homonyms are incomparable. If two things are homonymously F, then we are not entitled to claim …

Testosterone And The Adult Male, Alex Straftis Jan 2018

Testosterone And The Adult Male, Alex Straftis

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Abstract

In the last 15 years, prescription testosterone sales have increased almost threefold. Testosterone is a powerful hormone, which has both physiological and behavioral effects on the adult male. These effects vary over a man’s life course and social ecology. In a natural setting, testosterone reaches a peak during early adulthood, declines gradually over midlife, and has exponential drops after the age of 70. Increasing testosterone, through testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), past early adulthood, is an evolutionary novel circumstance for an adult male. To gauge these effects, and the motivations that initiated them, this study conducted a preliminary text analysis …

Increasing Chance-Based Uncertainty Reduces Heavy Drinkers’ Cognitive Reactance To Web-Based Personalized Normative Feedback, Sarah C. Boyle, Andrew M. Earle, Nate Mccabe, Joseph W. Labrie Jan 2018

Increasing Chance-Based Uncertainty Reduces Heavy Drinkers’ Cognitive Reactance To Web-Based Personalized Normative Feedback, Sarah C. Boyle, Andrew M. Earle, Nate Mccabe, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

Objective: Despite its prominence in the health communication literature, psychological reactance has rarely been considered as a factor that may undermine web-based Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) alcohol interventions for college students. This study built on recent gamification work to examine how chance-based uncertainty, a popular game mechanic associated with motivation and attention in digital games for learning, might be leveraged to reduce the psychological reactance experienced by heavy drinking students receiving alcohol PNF, thereby leading to larger reductions in their alcohol consumption. Method: Psychological reactance, perceptions of norms, and drinking behaviors were assessed during a 3-week period following random assignment …

Wordnet-Feelings: A Linguistic Categorisation Of Human Feelings, Advaith Siddharthan, Nicolas Cherbuin, Paul J. Eslinger, Kasia Kozlowska, Nora Murphy, Leroy Lowe Jan 2018

Wordnet-Feelings: A Linguistic Categorisation Of Human Feelings, Advaith Siddharthan, Nicolas Cherbuin, Paul J. Eslinger, Kasia Kozlowska, Nora Murphy, Leroy Lowe

Psychological Science Faculty Works

In this article, we present the first in depth linguistic study of human feelings. While there has been substantial research on incorporating some affective categories into linguistic analysis (e.g. sentiment, and to a lesser extent, emotion), the more diverse category of human feelings has thus far not been investigated. We surveyed the extensive interdisciplinary literature around feelings to construct a working definition of what constitutes a feeling and propose 9 broad categories of feeling. We identified potential feeling words based on their pointwise mutual information with morphological variants of the word `feel' in the Google n-gram corpus, and present a …

The Children Of The East, Richard M. Davidson Jan 2018

The Children Of The East, Richard M. Davidson

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"The tradition is widespread in the Arab world which associates Ishmael and his descendants with Arabs in general and Muslim Arabs in particular. The esteemed Arab genealogist Ibn al-Kalbi (A.D. 737-818?) made popular the supposed genealogical link between Muhammad and Ishmael, largely through oral tradition. Whether this link is valid or not, clear and even older written records link the ancient nomadic tribes of northern Arabia with Ishmael, as we have noted above (Diorodus of Sicily, the book of Jubilees, Josephus, et al.). Arab genealogists generally trace the Arabians to two main ethnic stocks, the original Arabian Arabs from south …

Heavy Episodic Drinking Is Associated With Poorer Bone Health In Adolescent And Young Adult Women, Hawley Almstedt, Joseph W. Labrie, Sarah C. Boyle Jan 2018

Heavy Episodic Drinking Is Associated With Poorer Bone Health In Adolescent And Young Adult Women, Hawley Almstedt, Joseph W. Labrie, Sarah C. Boyle

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Objective: Osteoporosis is a costly bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) that primarily affects postmenopausal women. One factor that may lead to osteoporosis is a failure to reach peak bone mass (PBM) in early adulthood. In older adults and animal models, heavy episodic drinking (HED) has been found to predict failure to reach PBM. However, this relationship has yet to be investigated in adolescent human females. Method: Female college students (N = 87; 60% White) reported age at menarche, hormonal contraceptive use, physical activity, smoking habits, and HED history via an online survey and then received a …

Intellectual Virtue, Jason Baehr Jan 2018

Intellectual Virtue, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

With the advent of contemporary virtue epistemology, many philosophers of knowledge have turned their attention to intellectual virtues and their role in the life of the mind. This entry examines two general concepts of intellectual virtue and the theoretical uses to which they have been put. It is shown that “reliabilist” and “responsibilist” approaches to virtue epistemology, while emphasizing different aspects of cognition, are more closely aligned than they initially appear to be. The ethical significance of intellectual virtues is also considered. In particular, intellectual virtues are shown to occupy an important role in moral perception and practical reasoning.

Intellectual Virtues And Truth, Understanding, And Wisdom, Jason Baehr Jan 2018

Intellectual Virtues And Truth, Understanding, And Wisdom, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

This chapter addresses the proper end or aim of intellectual virtues. After distinguishing between two fundamentally different conceptions of intellectual virtue, the author considers the plausibility, with respect to each conception, of the “binary thesis,” according to which the proper aim of intellectual virtues is true belief and the avoidance of cognitive error. The author goes on to argue that if one understands intellectual virtues (as many virtue epistemologists do) as admirable traits of personal character—for example, as traits like curiosity, open-mindedness, intellectual courage, and intellectual humility—then sophia or theoretical wisdom presents itself as a plausible way of understanding their …

Material Recycling And The Myth Of Landfill Diversion, Trevor Zink Jan 2018

Material Recycling And The Myth Of Landfill Diversion, Trevor Zink

Management Faculty Works

Proponents of material recycling typically point to two environmental benefits: disposal (landfill/incinerator) reduction and primary production displacement. However, in this paper we mathematically demonstrate that, without displacement, recycling can delay but not prevent any existing end-of-life material from reaching final disposal. The only way to reduce the amount of material ultimately landfilled or incinerated is to produce less in the first place; material that is not made needs not be disposed. Recycling has the potential to reduce the amount of material reaching end of life solely by reducing primary production. Therefore, the “dual benefits” of recycling are in fact one, …

Representing Native Peoples: Native Narratives Of Indigenous History And Culture, Nicolas G. Rosenthal Jan 2018

Representing Native Peoples: Native Narratives Of Indigenous History And Culture, Nicolas G. Rosenthal

History Faculty Works

Together, the articles in this special issue of the American Indian Culture and Research Journal offer a discussion of how Indigenous peoples have represented themselves and their communities in different periods and contexts, as well as through various media. Ranging across anthropology, art history, cartography, film studies, history, and literature, the authors examine how Native people negotiate with prominent images and ideas that represented Indians in the dominant culture and society in the United States and the Americas. These essays go beyond the problems of cultural appropriation by non-Indians to probe the myriad ways Native Americans and Indigenous people have …

Transborder Speech, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr. Jan 2018

Transborder Speech, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Articles

In an increasingly globalized marketplace of ideas First Amendment theory and practice must recognize that the freedom of speech does not end at the water's edge The foreign or domestic origin of speech and speakers alike cannot serve as a constitutionally permissible basis for government censorship of speech because as Alexander Meiklejohn explained "to be afraid of ideas any idea is to be unfit for selfgovernment" Thus the locus of expressive activity should not prefigure the government's ability to engage in censorship Nevertheless under current First Amendment law and practice the accident of geography can and does serve as a …

Detection Of Semi-Polar Vitamins And Nutrients In Biological Samples, Jennifer Janovick Jan 2018

Detection Of Semi-Polar Vitamins And Nutrients In Biological Samples, Jennifer Janovick

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Metabolomics is used to examine metabolite fluctuations in biological systems and enables the diagnosis of metabolic disorders and the identification of new therapeutic targets.1 Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was utilized to develop a new method using a T3 column to separate small molecule nutrients and vitamins in a tissue sample. Initial tests of column performance used standard solutions; the amount of metabolites identified and the elution profile of these metabolites was examined. Both the standard solution and sample of brain tissue were tested with the final method developed. Six metabolites were identified in the standard and 31 were identified …

Preserved Consciousness In The Absence Of A Cerebral Cortex, The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Redefining Consciousness And Its Neural Correlates: A Case For A Subcortical System Generating Affective Consciousness, Shadia Kawkabani Jan 2018

Preserved Consciousness In The Absence Of A Cerebral Cortex, The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Redefining Consciousness And Its Neural Correlates: A Case For A Subcortical System Generating Affective Consciousness, Shadia Kawkabani

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Historically, the scientific and medical communities have taken a corticocentric view on consciousness, emphasizing the need for a cortex in producing the conscious experience. The preserved consciousness observed in hydranencephalic children and decorticated rats suggests that some form of consciousness may be produced by a subcortical network. The brainstem, a phylogenetically ancient and conserved brain structure, could serve as the major integrative machinery to produce this form of consciousness, which is called affective consciousness—the evolutionary antecedent to the reflective consciousness that allows humans to reflect on their experiences. The functional convergence of the brainstem with the amygdala, motor system, and …

It's A Goodyear For Innovation, Nathaniel Rellinger, Erin Horstman, Miranda Radesic, Layne Mckinley, Nash Smalley, Rachel Starvaggi

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Innovation is nothing new to The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The near future will bring another phase of evolution as the focus of tires sales will shift with the growing popularity of ride sharing, car sharing, and autonomous vehicles. For the scope of our project, it initially seemed obvious to use Goodyear’s good name as a selling point for a partnership with car sharing companies. We surveyed students at several colleges across Ohio that have car sharing fleets on campus and asked them about how they utilize the vehicles. After discovering through these interviews that ride sharing was more …

Analysis Of Ocular Changes In A Cyp1b1-/- Mouse, Kylie Barto Jan 2018

Analysis Of Ocular Changes In A Cyp1b1-/- Mouse, Kylie Barto

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of the research is to investigate the structural changes seen in Primary Congenital Glaucoma using a mouse model. Eye sections of a Cyp1b1-/- mouse were compared to eye sections of a healthy normal mouse (wild type, WT). Initial examination of the cornea, iris, and irodocorneal angle showed structural changes in Cyp1b1-/-. These changes were similar to those described in the literature using other animal models. This suggests that a mutation in Cyp1b1-/- in a mouse results in a phenotype similar to that seen in PCG human patients and this model could be used to investigate the pathophysiology of …

Exploring Adolescent Grief, Mental Health/Illness, Coping Mechanisms, And Recovery Through Young Adult Literature ‘Problem’ Novels, Kailey Gabriel Jan 2018

Exploring Adolescent Grief, Mental Health/Illness, Coping Mechanisms, And Recovery Through Young Adult Literature ‘Problem’ Novels, Kailey Gabriel

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Since the turn of the century, mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and self-harm have been on the rise in teenagers. A teen’s first confrontation with a traumatic event, such as violence or grief, often exacerbates symptoms of mental illness in those already susceptible. The problem novel, a subcategory of Young Adult literature, has emerged as a potentially therapeutic cultural form for teenagers coping with illness and/or trauma. In a world that still heavily stigmatizes mental afflictions, it can be helpful and affirming to read about characters dealing with similar issues through the comfortable distance of fiction. Readers can identify …

A Correlation Study Of The Nest Incubation Period And Hatchling Development And Success Rate For Olive Ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidocheyls Olivacea) Turtle Conservation: Playa Junquillal, Costa Rica, Natalie O'Brien Jan 2018

A Correlation Study Of The Nest Incubation Period And Hatchling Development And Success Rate For Olive Ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidocheyls Olivacea) Turtle Conservation: Playa Junquillal, Costa Rica, Natalie O'Brien

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) the Olive Ridley sea turtle contributes to the stability of an ecosystem by transferring nutrients and energy to both the terrestrial and oceanic environment [1]. Costa Rica holds some of the most prominent nesting beaches for Olive Ridley sea turtles in the World. Collection and relocation of surveyed nests to monitored hatcheries increases the success rate significantly [2]. Realistically, nest and hatchling protection against land-based threats such as poaching, predation and beach erosion is a practical and accessible conservation measure. Facilitated by access to the sea turtle …

Innate Chemical Resistance Of Virginia Big-Eared Bats (Corynorhinus Townsendii Virginianus) To White-Nose Syndrome, Daniel S. Danford, Leah Shriver, Hazel A. Barton Jan 2018

Innate Chemical Resistance Of Virginia Big-Eared Bats (Corynorhinus Townsendii Virginianus) To White-Nose Syndrome, Daniel S. Danford, Leah Shriver, Hazel A. Barton

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is an emergent epidemic disease of bats in North America. Caused by the novel fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans, with a mortality rate of >75%, in the last decade WNS has led to the local extinction of numerous bat species. Despite this high mortality, one species, the Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus) remains unaffected. Virginia big-eared bats (VBEs) are commonly found covered in a yellow, oily substance, with a pelage commensal population dominated by the yeast, Debaryomyces udenii. As D. udenii is an oleaginous yeast that produces yellow colonies, the fungus may be responsible …

Inferring Species Origin Through Virtual Histology: A Comparison Of Third Metapodials From Homo Sapiens And Ursus Americanus Using Micro-Computed Tomography, Hannah Stephen Jan 2018

Inferring Species Origin Through Virtual Histology: A Comparison Of Third Metapodials From Homo Sapiens And Ursus Americanus Using Micro-Computed Tomography, Hannah Stephen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Human and black bear metacarpals and metatarsals, or the hand and foot bones and bear paws, are well documented on a gross anatomical level. The macrostructural data comparing the two species is useful in distinguishing the species unless fragmented bone is found. In this case, histological data is used for clearer and more accurate comparisons but, research that compares the metapodials of black bears and humans on a microstrutural level is scarce. This study aimed to aid in forensic science identification scenarios where fragmented bone is discovered by providing the differences between black bear and human metacarpals and metatarsals on …

Varying Water Stress In Mimulus Ringens, Sara Stiles Jan 2018

Varying Water Stress In Mimulus Ringens, Sara Stiles

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A wetland plant’s ability to tolerate flooding is important to determining where that plant can grow. Previous studies have shown the optimal flood tolerance of Mimulus ringens is between -2cm and -6cm (Fraser & Karnezis, 2005). This experiment expands on these previous experiments by testing variation in water levels instead of maintaining the water levels at one height throughout the experiment. The hypothesis of the experiment is that Mimulus ringens that have variation in water levels will show signs of better growth than plants with a constant water level. Contrary to predictions, the results showed the final height, number of …

Preliminary Investigations Into Endospanin Expression In Zebrafish, Brittany Gray Jan 2018

Preliminary Investigations Into Endospanin Expression In Zebrafish, Brittany Gray

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study investigated endospanin expression in zebrafish by performing western blots to identify which tissues expressed endospanin. A feeding study was also conducted to see if endospanin expression varied in fed versus unfed fish. After tissues were dissected, protein assays were performed on homogenized tissues and then gels were run using gel electrophoresis. The primary antibody rabbit anti-endospanin peptide was used on the finished blots. Chemiluminescence was then used to visualize the blots using GeneSnap software. Endospanin expression was evident in heart, liver, and ovary tissues. The feeding study showed that endospanin expression in liver tissue was not significantly different …

Modification Of Bacterial Cellulose Using Organosilanes To Enhance Cell Adhesion And Growth, Kristi Ferrato Jan 2018

Modification Of Bacterial Cellulose Using Organosilanes To Enhance Cell Adhesion And Growth, Kristi Ferrato

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In this project, drying bacterial cellulose (BC) to maintain its structural integrity, and treating BC with organosilanes 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) as well as with various concentration of gelatin to increase the cells per area was studied. Drying BC with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) by soaking the BC in ascending concentrations of ethanol and HMDS did not protect the structural integrity of the BC grown in lab but did for the BC grown in Dr. Siriporn Taokaew’s lab. Freeze drying also did not fully protect the structural integrity as the BC was placed in a freezer for several hours at -20oC …
