Availability Of Fermentable Nutrients Affect Gut Microbiota Composition, Trupthi Mehta
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies have increasingly established the role of gut microbiota in human health and disease. Diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, cardiovascular disease and many neurological disorders have been linked to specific gut microbiota composition and disturbances. There have also been attempts in recent years to modulate gut microbial composition with the use of prebiotics and probiotics to promote healthy gut and prevent diseases. This thesis investigates whether the availability of fermentable nutrients high in fiber and antioxidants such as found in green coffee, roasted coffee, and salami infused with various prebiotics altered the composition and abundance of …

3d Visualization And Interactive Image Manipulation For Surgical Planning In Robot-Assisted Surgery, Mohammadreza Maddah
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Robot-assisted surgery, or "robotic" surgery, has been developed to address the difficulties with the traditional laparoscopic surgery. The da Vinci (Intuitive Surgical, CA and USA) is one of the FDA-approved surgical robotic system which is widely used in the case of abdominal surgeries like hysterectomy and cholecystectomy. The technology includes a system of master and slave tele-manipulators that enhances manipulation precision. However, inadequate guidelines and lack of a human-machine interface system for planning the ports on the abdomen surface are some of the main issues with robotic surgery. Unreachable target and mid-surgery collisions between robotic arms are the major problems …

When presented with many search results, finding information or patterns within the data poses a challenge. This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a visualization enabling users to browse through voluminous information and comprehend the data. Implemented with the JavaScript library Data Driven Documents (D3), the visualization represents the search as clusters of similar documents grouped into bubbles with the contents depicted as word-clouds. Highly interactive features such as touch gestures and intuitive menu actions allow for expeditious exploration of the search results. Other features include drag-and-drop functionality for articles among bubbles, merging nodes, and refining the search …

Exercise And Cancer: A Summary Of Therapeutic Intervention, Cassandra Gillespie
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Background: There is strong evidence to support the benefits of exercise for cancer patients. However, there are few literature reviews that summarize exercise as it plays a role in all aspects of the cancer diagnosis including during cancer prevention, prehabilitation in surgical cancer patients, cancer treatment, and cancer recovery. This review serves to provide a comprehensive resource for students and health care professionals for research based findings related to the interactions between exercise and cancer.
Purpose: To summarize the current research findings involving the relationship between cancer and exercise.

Development Of Entubulation Strategies For Treating Central Nervous System Injuries, Ivy Brosch
Development Of Entubulation Strategies For Treating Central Nervous System Injuries, Ivy Brosch
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
According to the McKnight Brain Institute, at least 10,000 people annually in the USA suffer from a central nervous system (CNS) injury. These injuries can cause serve disabilities including paralysis. Due to the complexity of the spinal cord, it is common that potential CNS treatments are first applied to an optic nerve crush (ONC) model in rats. Two proposed treatments were employed; one where nerve growth factor (NGF) was immobilized to a chitosan substrate to stimulate axonal regeneration, and the other using pentadecafluorooctanoyl chloride modified methacrylamide chitosan (MAC(Ali15)F) hydrogel to enhance local oxygenation. The two different treatments were formed into …

The eight major subtopics primarily focused on include: what is dyslexia; how dyslexia affects students; and how teachers and parents can help students in their classroom preference. This can be done by using proper teaching techniques, including appropriate accommodations, and by meeting the academic needs of their students and including activities that are proven to help dyslexic students …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to utilize media relations and strategic communication to address a challenge that the local non-profit shelter Haven of Rest has with attracting and retaining volunteers. Haven of Rest struggles to maintain a consistent volunteer pool in the 15-45 age range.
