Functionalizing Titanium Implants With Bioactive Peptides To Increase Osseointegration, Neil Bernard
Functionalizing Titanium Implants With Bioactive Peptides To Increase Osseointegration, Neil Bernard
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Orthopedic surgeries have continued to increase, but the material of choice remains constant: titanium. Titanium has become the benchmark implant material due to its durability and non-immunogenic properties. However, while high rates of success are correlated with joint replacement surgery, certain patients with predisposed diseases such as diabetes or arthritis may have increased complications.1 This can be due to lack of osseointegration due to decreased bone formation and mineralization,2 which will lead to increased rates of infection or aseptic loosening of the implant from the bone. 3 Current methods to alleviate these complications include invasive revisional surgeries, which …
Analysis Of Ocular Changes In A Cyp1b1-/- Mouse, Emily Arison
Analysis Of Ocular Changes In A Cyp1b1-/- Mouse, Emily Arison
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal of this research is to develop a mouse model with a mutation in the CYP1B1 gene that would result in a phenotype similar to that seen in Primary Congenital Glaucoma (PCG) human patients. Using this mouse model, structural changes in eyes and upregulation of certain proteins were observed compared to a normal mouse. Examination of the cornea, iris, retina, ciliary body, and iridocorneal angle showed structural changes in CYP1B1 mice compared to wild type mice. These results were similar to those described in studies using other animal models. Furthermore, the current study confirmed earlier findings in other animal …

Long-Term Outcome And Complications Of 32 Distal Femoral Osteotomies Performed For Correction Of Mpl In Dogs Without Cranial Cruciate Disease, Nicholas Crawfis
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Many canines suffer severe, grade I-IV, medial patella luxation causing a persistent lameness, severely reducing the quality of life for the dog (Linney et al 2011). For these patients surgical intervention is recommended to alleviate these symptoms. The procedure used to do so is a distal femoral osteotomy (DFO). This procedure allows for correction of torsion in the femur and quadriceps mechanism, and frontal plane abnormalities at the same time. The present study aims to describe the long-term outcome and related complications of 32 DFOs, without concomitant Cranial Cruciate Ligament rupture (CCLR), in a large private practice referral hospital based …
"Before The Rain Came" (Poems), Alizabeth Christian
"Before The Rain Came" (Poems), Alizabeth Christian
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Poetry is often perceived as an unfamiliar form of expression. With misconceptions of poetry being as something driven by pure epiphany, poetry is lost amongst many individuals. This misconception is challenged throughout this collection and encourages readers to embrace vulnerability through the speaker’s passage to self acceptance. In my piece, “For the Big Horns,” vulnerability is encompassed when the speaker says that “The mountain told me that we are all animals without blueprints. That people are no longer people without fear, and that fear is a root.” These lines encapsulate the speaker’s persistence to show readers an experience of humanness, …
The Kinematics Of Salamander Underwater Walking On Smooth And Rough Substrate, Sophie Cressman
The Kinematics Of Salamander Underwater Walking On Smooth And Rough Substrate, Sophie Cressman
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The transition from aquatic to terrestrial locomotion was a landmark event in the evolutionary history of vertebrates. In order to better understand how early tetrapods were able to transition to land, salamanders have proven to be a useful animal model. With current research focusing heavily on the anatomy, physiology, and kinematics defining salamander terrestrial walking capabilities, this experiment was designed to extract information about the kinematics of salamander walking underwater. Underwater walking of salamanders was analyzed on smooth and rough substrates to provide more insight into the early vertebrate water-to-land transition. Average salamander stride duration, time in stance phase, time …
Car-Less Cities, Maryam Moeinian
Car-Less Cities, Maryam Moeinian
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The rapid growth of world population along with the sprawl growth of towns and suburbanization, has affected the human life and its surrounding nature dramatically. The fact is this level of growth is not sustainable with the current patterns of development. Most cities all around the world are designed in a way that encourages car dependency which is harming the environment and human health.
During the past decade, urban planners formulate new principles of land use development to preserve the environment and protect public health, safety and general welfare of the citizens. These concepts are characterized by some movements such …

Multiple Antibodies Are Effective At Labeling S-Opsin Cones, Jenna Jamil
Multiple Antibodies Are Effective At Labeling S-Opsin Cones, Jenna Jamil
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Cones are a type of photoreceptor found in the retina that initiates visual processes. Cones can respond to different wavelengths of light and therefore allow for color vision. They are also responsible for high acuity and daylight vision (Ueno et al 2018). Immunohistochemistry is a technique that can be used to label and visualize specific types of cones in the mouse retina. A primary antibody is used to bind to a specific antigen, such as s-opsin in cones. A secondary antibody with a fluorescent marker then binds to the primary antibody to allow for amplification and visualization. Through effectively labeling …
Understanding Black Rat Predation On Hawaiian Petrels And Newell’S Shearwaters Through Stable Isotope Analysis, Megan Munyon
Understanding Black Rat Predation On Hawaiian Petrels And Newell’S Shearwaters Through Stable Isotope Analysis, Megan Munyon
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
On the island of Kauai, black rats (Rattus rattus) are an invasive species that have been recorded by the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Program (KESRP) to prey upon the federally endangered Hawaiian Petrels (Pterodroma sandwichensis) and threatened Newell’s Shearwaters (Puffinus auricularis newelli). The black rats were studied in order to determine whether the seabirds make up a significant portion of the black rat’s diet. Stable isotopes of d13C, d34S, and d15N in the black rat’s whiskers were analyzed to look at whether their diet was mainly terrestrial based or …

Communication can be hard enough when you’re speaking in your native tongue, but throw in a second language and something’s sure to get lost in translation. In this creative nonfiction piece, I trace my real-life journey from tongue-tied homebody to bilingual voyageuse over the stepping stones of four chapters, with each chapter linked by the themes of language and communication. In the first half of the project, a unique job offer brings love, friendship, and plenty of misunderstanding into my humdrum life, and inspires me to pick up a language that broadens my personal and academic horizons. In the …
A Comparison Of Gecko Adhesion On Soft Substrates, Alexis Schnarrenberger
A Comparison Of Gecko Adhesion On Soft Substrates, Alexis Schnarrenberger
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Gecko adhesion has been studied for years, and geckos must navigate among a variety of surfaces in their natural environment. Previous work investigating gecko adhesion on soft substrates suggested that geckos cannot stick to soft surfaces, although only one soft material was tested. This study, using tokay geckos (Gekko gecko), explored gecko adhesion on other soft substrates than those previously studied, including natural rubber, neoprene rubber, and nitrile rubber. The study found that geckos can, in fact, adhere to soft surfaces, although they stick to some better than others. To investigate these differences, the tested surfaces were characterized based …

Discriminant-Based Study Of The Shell Morphometric Relationships Of Patella Caerulea (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia) Of The Western Mediterranean Sea, Zoheir Bouzaza, Karim Mezali
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Our work is a contribution to the study of the morphometric dissimilarity of the limpet Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) inhabiting the seashore of the western Mediterranean Sea. For this study, 438 individuals of this species were sampled in 24 stations and separated into 2 groups of individuals: the first group (G1) originating from the upper infralittoral and the lower mediolittoral areas, and the second group (G2) originating from the upper mediolittoral area. The biometry of P. caerulea has been studied by considering the total length (L), the total width (W), and the total height (H) of the shell. These parameters …
The Effect Of Early Life Photoperiod Manipulation On Cocaine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization In Male And Female Japanese Quail, Shannon Elizabeth Eaton
The Effect Of Early Life Photoperiod Manipulation On Cocaine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization In Male And Female Japanese Quail, Shannon Elizabeth Eaton
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Estrogens seem to play a role in the locomotor activating effects of cocaine. Japanese quail provide a good model for hormonal manipulation as alterations of their photoperiod controls hormone levels. The current study aims to examine the role of early life photoperiod manipulation in cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization in quail. It was expected that if quail were raised on a short photoperiod, they would have a reduction in gonadal hormones and this reduction in hormones would affect the acquisition of cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization. Quail were raised on an 8L:16D or a 16L:8D light cycle. Following 2 days of habituation, quail were …
Cocaine Choice: A Novel Procedure For Investigating Neuronal Activation Mediating Cocaine Preference, Jonathan Jenn-Sheng Chow
Cocaine Choice: A Novel Procedure For Investigating Neuronal Activation Mediating Cocaine Preference, Jonathan Jenn-Sheng Chow
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Cocaine use disorder is a significant health problem, negatively impacting individuals afflicted. While preclinical self-administration research has provided invaluable insight into the neurobehavioral mechanisms that underlie cocaine abuse, cocaine use outside of the laboratory occurs within an environment where other goods are also available ubiquitously. Although there is an ever-increasing literature investigating drug vs. non-drug choice in rodent models and how alternative goods can compete with the subjective value of cocaine, the neurobiological mechanisms that are associated with cocaine preference remains largely unknown. Additionally, current drug vs. non-drug choice studies use procedures that confound preference with intake, such that preference …

Bioremoval Of Toxic Dye By Using Different Marine Macroalgae, Hanan Omar, Adel El-Gendy, Khairia Al-Ahmary
Turkish Journal of Botany
The removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solution by Ulva lactuca, Sargassum crassifolium, and Gracilaria corticata has been demonstrated in order to examine their potential use as low-cost adsorbents. The optimum pH (8.0), temperature (25 °C), contact time (150 min), and biomass (2.0 g) for removal of dye by algae are reported. The maximum removal percentage of the dye ranged between 95.6% and 98.3% by using Sargassum crassifolium at the optimal conditions. Minimum removal of dye by algae (69%-77.1%) was observed with the high dye concentration of 35 mg L-1 at the optimal conditions. Adsorption of the dye by …
Differential Decomposition Rates Of Non-Human Remains With The Facilitation Of Sodium Hydroxide In Dissimilar Deposition Environments, Hayley Savage
Differential Decomposition Rates Of Non-Human Remains With The Facilitation Of Sodium Hydroxide In Dissimilar Deposition Environments, Hayley Savage
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Dissolving bodies is a contemporary method of disposing human remains and has been practiced throughout the years. In popular media, criminals attempt to dispose of their victims by using various chemicals to dissolve the corpses. There is an immense gap in the literature pertaining to this research, so this present study aims to combat the lack of information on the topic. This research investigates the effects of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), generally known as lye or caustic soda, a common household chemical, on human tissues and bone by using an animal analogue (domestic pig, Sus scrofa domesticus). Four dissimilar deposition environments …
Rape, Revenge, Reclamation: An Analysis Of Female Agency In American Rape-Revenge Films, Marissa Connell
Rape, Revenge, Reclamation: An Analysis Of Female Agency In American Rape-Revenge Films, Marissa Connell
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis, I will analyze five films that have a rape-revenge narrative: Ms. 45 (1981), M.F.A. (2017), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), I Spit on Your Grave (2010), and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). I will argue that the violent actions taken by the female protagonist during her revenge against her rapist(s) serve to allow her to reclaim her agency that was stolen from her during the rape(s). I will show that the rape-revenge narrative is more diverse than it might seem, as the five films I analyze deal with rape, and responses to rape, in …
Fear And (Non) Fiction: Agrarian Anxiety In “The Colour Out Of Space”, Antonio Barroso
Fear And (Non) Fiction: Agrarian Anxiety In “The Colour Out Of Space”, Antonio Barroso
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This literary and sociological study examines H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space” alongside New England agricultural societies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as their members faced socio-political change. Anxieties expressed in the short story reflect fears of communities facing erasure at the hands of a reservoir project. Patterns of historical American rural communities facing destruction in the name of progress as well as modern communities facing similar threats show the endurance of Lovecraft’s specific brand of fear.
Regulatory Issues Concerning The Preclinical Testing Of Synthetic Peptides, Vamsi Vardhan Niraghatam
Regulatory Issues Concerning The Preclinical Testing Of Synthetic Peptides, Vamsi Vardhan Niraghatam
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Any new drug or biological product undergoes rigorous testing in animals and humans for review by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before it becomes available for human use. A sponsor files an investigational new drug (IND) application with the FDA with supporting animal data, after which testing is continued with humans. There is sufficient guidance from the FDA on new small molecules and biological products as to which preclinical studies are to be conducted. Synthetic peptides present a unique scenario in which a case-by-case approach is needed for the conduct of preclinical studies. For peptides containing components …

Renouncing Citizenship As Protest: Reflections By A Jewish Israeli Ethnographer, Irus Braverman
Renouncing Citizenship As Protest: Reflections By A Jewish Israeli Ethnographer, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
The events of summer 2014 and the painful realizations that they invoked have led me to consider renouncing my Israeli citizenship. Contemplating what may seem like a straightforward stance of resistance, I have come to realize how complex it actually is. This short essay considers renunciation as an act of protest from the standpoint of a Jewish Israeli legal ethnographer and geographer... [The essay] foregrounds the following questions: aren’t all modern states founded upon bloodshed? And, if so, shouldn’t all citizens be renouncing their citizenship? Or from the opposite angle: why bother replacing one flawed citizenship with another? In my …

Climate Change Challenges For Land Conservation: Rethinking Conservation Easements, Strategies, And Tools, Jessica Owley, Federico Cheever, Adena R. Rissman, M. Rebecca Shaw, Barton H. Thompson Jr., W. William Weeks
Journal Articles
Climate change has significant consequences for land conservation. Government agencies and nonprofit land trusts heavily rely on perpetual conservation easements. However, climate change and other dynamic landscape changes raise questions about the effectiveness and adaptability of permanent conservation instruments like conservation easements. Building upon a study of 269 conservation easements and interviews with seventy conservation-easement professionals in six different states, we examine the adaptability of conservation easements to climate change. We outline four potential approaches to enhance conservation outcomes under climate change: (1) shift land-acquisition priorities to account for potential climate change impacts; (2) consider conservation tools other than perpetual …
What Authorizes The Image? The Visual Economy Of Post-Secular Jurisprudence, Richard Sherwin
What Authorizes The Image? The Visual Economy Of Post-Secular Jurisprudence, Richard Sherwin
Articles & Chapters
In law’s visual economy our commitment to justice grows out of a renewed encounter with an interior libidinal source whose ongoing collective investment binds us to the nomos in which we live. We experience this corporeal bond in paintings, films, and video images on screens large and small. In the ethically inflected aesthetic of post-secular jurisprudence, justice is to law as beauty is to art. As distant as an abstract expressionist canvas, as close as any neighbor, or indeed any screen on which the neighbor becomes real to us. That is where we behold the source and instantiation of law’s …
