Teucrium species have been used in traditional medicine for treatment of different diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate polyphenolic contents by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the genotoxic effect of methanolic extracts of Teucrium polium and Teucrium scordium using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from healthy donors. The HPLC analysis showed that extracts consist of phenolic acid (gallic, vanillic, caffeic, chlorogenic, p-coumaric, sinapic) and flavonoids (catechin, rutin, myricetin, luteolin, quercetin and apigenin). Cultures were treated with extracts of both plants separately and in combinations with mitomycin C (MMC). In separate treatments, …

Research on longevity is important to both prolong lifespan and support healthy aging. Natural products are widely being utilized and used as new resources for drug molecules. Caenorhabditis elegans is an advantageous organism for longevity research and age-related diseases. In this study, we tested a number of plant extracts for their effects on C. elegans longevity. In lifespan assays, age- synchronized wild-type C. elegans specimens were treated with different concentrations of plant extracts. Plant extracts were prepared as either infusions or decoctions, similar to their traditional utilization. Hedera helix L. (Araliaceae) extended lifespan in worms in a concentration-dependent manner. The …

Aging is a main risk factor for development of cardiovascular diseases associated with the impairment of endothelial function in both sexes. In the present study, age-related changes in vascular responsiveness, epigenetic modifications of vessel wall, and blood biomarkers related to endothelial functions were examined in an age- and sex-dependent manner. Acetylcholine (ACh)-induced relaxations of the aorta were decreased in 3-, 6-, and 12-month-old rats compared to those in 1-month-old female rats. In males, maximum relaxations related to ACh were higher in 1- and 6-month-old rats than in 3- and 12-month-old rats. Plasma levels of nitric oxide (NO) and asymmetric dimethylarginine …

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Effects Of Capsaicin On Normal And Cancerouscells Of Human Cartilage, Nagi̇han Helvaci, Sabahatti̇n Cömertpay
Turkish Journal of Biology
Chondrosarcoma is a common form of bone cancer which affects the fibrous connective tissue around a joint. It most commonly develops in legs, arms, shoulder blades, rib cage, and pelvis. Capsaicin is an active bitter compound found in red pepper, the fruit of the species Capsicum annuum, and it has been shown to have a lethal effect on different types of cancer. However, to date, investigation of its effect on human chondrosarcoma cells has remained limited. In the study presented here, we determined IC50 values of capsaicin for chondrosarcoma and chondrocyte cells in both fetal bovine serum (FBS)-containing and FBS-deprived …

Oxidative Stress Upregulates The Transcription Of Genes Involved In Thiaminemetabolism, Burcu Kartal, Ahmet Akçay, Bedi̇a Palabiyik
Turkish Journal of Biology
Thiamine is a major vitamin that acts as a cofactor in energy metabolism in all organisms, as well as in lipid and amino acid metabolisms, and is associated with many diseases. It is known that glucose starvation decreases the intracellular thiamine pool while increasing oxidative stress tolerance. Earlier, in whole genome analysis, we detected major differences in the expression of genes related to thiamine pathway against oxidative stress in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We investigated the effects of oxidative stress and glucose repression to thiamine pathway in S. pombe by comparing some genes encoding key enzymes of each related pathway at the …

An Analysis And Performance Guide Of Steve Reich’S Mallet Quartet, Francisco S. Perez
An Analysis And Performance Guide Of Steve Reich’S Mallet Quartet, Francisco S. Perez
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Steve Reich’s music has had a profound effect on the contemporary percussionist’s repertoire. More recently, his Mallet Quartet (2009) has been one of the most performed works in the rising genre of mallet-keyboard quartets, which was featured in Third Coast Percussion’s 2017 Grammy-winning album Third Coast Percussion | Steve Reich. With Mallet Quartet, Reich codified this type of ensemble into the contemporary repertoire of percussion as evidenced through current commissions in progress by groups such as Sō Percussion and Third Coast Percussion.
The purpose of this document is to delineate the trajectory (past and present) of the mallet-keyboard …
Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph
Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph
Theses and Dissertations--Music
In this dissertation, I analyzed Max Neuhaus’s (1939-2009) and R. Murray Schafer’s (b. 1932) commentary and work regarding noise, its control, and its relationship with the environment from the 1960 to the 1980s. Both Neuhaus and Schafer as well as those more directly involved with noise abatement research and policy were responding to the challenges and possibilities that noise posed in the latter twentieth century. In this project, I delved into these substantial links and argued that responding to and engaging with noise abatement policies was a key impetus to much of their work, which scholarship has yet to critically …
"Think Of The Children!”: Gender And Sexuality In Nickelodeon Cart And Designoons, Rebecca Grenier
"Think Of The Children!”: Gender And Sexuality In Nickelodeon Cart And Designoons, Rebecca Grenier
Whittier Scholars Program
The world of television cart and designoons has historically been, and largely remains, a space dominated by stories of straight male characters. Cart and designoons are written about boys, for boys, and even as live-action television is making dedicated strides toward on-screen gender equity, these animated programs continue to fall short. At least, that’s the theory. ‘Think of the Children!’: Gender and Sexuality in Nickelodeon Cart and designoons examines the amount and quality of representation of genders and sexualities in five culturally-significant cart and designoons that premiered on children’s television network Nickelodeon between 1991 and 2001: Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, SpongeBob …
Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak
Providing Metrics-Based Results To Student Pilots For Critical Phases Of General Aviation Flights, Kelton Karboviak
Theses and Dissertations
This work details the development of the Critical Phase Analysis Tool (CPAT), a tool for analyzing and grading the quality of approach and landing phases of flight for the National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID). General Aviation (GA) accounts for the highest accident rates in Civil Aviation, and the approach and landing phases are when a majority of these accidents occur. Since GA aircraft typically lack most of the sophisticated technology that exists within Commercial Aviation, detecting phases of flight can be difficult. Moreover, because of the high variability in GA operations and abilities of the pilot, detecting unsafe …
Using Citizen Scientists To Inform Machine Learning Algorithms To Automate The Detection Of Species In Ecological Imagery, Marshall Mattingly
Using Citizen Scientists To Inform Machine Learning Algorithms To Automate The Detection Of Species In Ecological Imagery, Marshall Mattingly
Theses and Dissertations
Modern data collection techniques used by ecologists has created a deluge of data that is becoming increasingly difficult to store, filter, and analyze in an efficient and timely manner. In just two summers, over 65,000 unmanned aerial system (UAS) images were collected, comprising the several terabytes (TB) of data that was reviewed by citizen scientists to generate inputs for machine learning algorithms. Uncontrolled conditions and the small size of target species relative to the background further increase the difficulty of manually cataloging the images. To assist with locating and identifying snow geese in the UAS images, a citizen science web …
American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross
American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross
Theses and Dissertations
A time in American history existed when Native Americans were not allowed to express, much less retain their traditions, culture, language, and livelihood. Today, Natives are thriving in various fields at many different professional levels and have not only mastered majority cultureâs ways, but have integrated them, on their own terms, into their lives. Warfare was declared upon Native Americans in the educational arena beginning in the late 1800âs, resulting in many indigenous individuals not only meeting the educational challenge posed to them, but excelled beyond expectation. Thus, in contemporary society, many Native Americans have retained their traditional ways and …
The Mobility Of Semi-Volatile Trace Elements From Size Segregated Fly Ash Particles Generated During Pulverized Coal Combustion, Prasanna Seshadri
The Mobility Of Semi-Volatile Trace Elements From Size Segregated Fly Ash Particles Generated During Pulverized Coal Combustion, Prasanna Seshadri
Theses and Dissertations
Fly ash generated from pulverized coal (PC) combustion has a wide size range, including some fine aerosols. Of particular concern is the abundance and mobility of elements present in the smaller size fractions of the ash, commonly referred to as PM2.5. These particles are usually enriched with toxic trace species which are classified as hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) under the amended clean air act (CAA). Interest in the control of PM2.5 is motivated mainly by health considerations and also due to their role impacting the performance of air pollution control devices such as selective catalytic reducers (SCRs).
The three trace …
The Interpretation And Effect Of Permissive Forum Selection Clauses Under U.S. Law, Hannah L. Buxbaum
The Interpretation And Effect Of Permissive Forum Selection Clauses Under U.S. Law, Hannah L. Buxbaum
Articles by Maurer Faculty
A forum selection clause is a form of contractual waiver. By this device, a contract party waives its rights to raise jurisdictional or venue objections if a lawsuit is initiated against it in the chosen court. The use of such a clause in a particular case may therefore raise a set of questions under contract law. Is the waiver valid? Was it procured by fraud, duress, or other unconscionable means? What is its scope? And so on. Unlike most contractual waivers, though, a forum selection clause affects not only the private rights and obligations of the parties, but something of …
Disney’S Magical Moments: Animated Vs Live Action, Mauricio Romero
Disney’S Magical Moments: Animated Vs Live Action, Mauricio Romero
Whittier Scholars Program
What I hope to accomplish within my senior project is the actual progress within the Disney company. Will these changes to these films actually bring a different perspective to the audience about the Disney company. Or will they create new problems that they will be branded for once again. By looking at the originals critics and choices within the actual film and the advertisement I will see which has more critical success to the general public and if they were successful with the changes they tried to make. Specifically looking at their Princess films since those are most of the …
The Many Sins Of Nepa, Richard A. Epstein
The Comparative Institutions Approach To Wildlife Governance, Dean Lueck
The Comparative Institutions Approach To Wildlife Governance, Dean Lueck
Texas A&M Law Review
This Article develops a comparative institutions approach to wildlife governance by examining the property rights to the habitat and the stocks of wild populations. The approach is based on the transaction cost and property rights approach and lies primarily in the traditions of Coase, Barzel, Ostrom, and Williamson. The approach recognizes the often-extreme costs of delineation and enforcement of property rights to wild populations and their habitats; thus, all systems are notably imperfect compared to the typical neoclassical economics approach. These costs arise because wildlife habitat and wildlife populations are part of the land which has many attributes and uses—most …
Drought And Public Necessity: Can A Common-Law "Stick" Increase Flexibility In Western Water Law?, Robin Kundis Craig
Drought And Public Necessity: Can A Common-Law "Stick" Increase Flexibility In Western Water Law?, Robin Kundis Craig
Texas A&M Law Review
Drought is a recurring—and likely increasing—challenge to water rights administration in western states under the prior appropriation doctrine, where “first in time” senior rights are often allocated to non-survival uses such as commercial agriculture, rather than to drinking water supply for cities. While states and localities facing severe drought have used a variety of voluntary programs to reallocate water, these programs by their very nature cannot guarantee that water will in fact be redistributed to the uses that best promote public health and community survival. In addition, pure market solutions run the risk that “survival water” will become too expensive …
Regulatory Carrots And Sticks In Climate Policy: Some Political Economic Observations, Jason S. Johnston
Regulatory Carrots And Sticks In Climate Policy: Some Political Economic Observations, Jason S. Johnston
Texas A&M Law Review
This Article sets out an informal political economic theory which explains the relative permanence of regulatory carrots—legislative subsidies and mandates for product use—versus the transience of regulatory sticks—traditional costly regulatory requirements. After setting out the elements of this theory, I illustrate it with the dramatic rise in the Obama Administration and abrupt cessation in the Trump Administration of attempts to use conventional U.S. environmental regulatory sticks to end the U.S. coal industry. The Article turns then to describe a concrete example of a regulatory carrot—the U.S. corn ethanol mandate—that has survived despite overwhelming evidence that its environmental benefits, if any, …
Collaborative Management As A Mechanism For Incentivizing Private Landowners And Protecting Endangered Species, Ashley Graves
Collaborative Management As A Mechanism For Incentivizing Private Landowners And Protecting Endangered Species, Ashley Graves
Texas A&M Law Review
Currently, the Endangered Species Act is falling short of its potential. Even though the Endangered Species Act has provided protection for endangered and threatened species and helped some species to recover and even thrive, the fact that most listed species’ habitat is on private land remains a hurdle that has not yet been overcome. In fact, the stringent requirements imposed upon private landowners often put endangered and threatened species at risk as some private landowners will use any means possible to stop the government from finding endangered or threatened species on their land. Because of this, the United States Fish …
Agency Coordination Of Private Action: The Role Of Relational Contracting, Karen Maire Bradshaw Schulz
Agency Coordination Of Private Action: The Role Of Relational Contracting, Karen Maire Bradshaw Schulz
Texas A&M Law Review
This Article explores the previously overlooked role of relational contracting in forming and maintaining public-private partnerships. Relational contracting generally describes firms using formal but legally non-binding agreements to collaborate on shared objectives. Why do parties invest in forming elaborate contracts that they do not—and cannot—enforce in court? Contract theory suggests that the very act of contracting is relationship-building; it generates commitment, trust, cooperation, a win-win philosophy, and strengthened communication. Writing down goals and intentions allows parties to clarify expectations while maintaining flexibility for unforeseen conditions. This Article demonstrates that agencies also use relational contracting— creating unenforceable written agreements to build …

Emotional Reactions In Non-Human Animals And Social-Functional Theories Of Emotion, Gerben A. Van Kleef
Emotional Reactions In Non-Human Animals And Social-Functional Theories Of Emotion, Gerben A. Van Kleef
Animal Sentience
The debate about animal emotions relies heavily on empirical evidence, which is often open to multiple interpretations. This ambiguity allows researchers at either end of the spectrum to perceive support for their positions in study results. Thus, evidence reported by Cook and colleagues (2018) – that dogs’ trait aggression is associated with their amygdala activation when watching their caregivers feed a fake dog – may be interpreted by some as neural evidence for jealousy in dogs and by others as an artefact of the study design. I argue that the discussion should be complemented with a greater consideration of theoretical …

Not Just The Playground: Adult Bullying In The K-12 Workplace, Cynthia J. Kleinheksel
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This non-experimental, explanatory, quantitative research study surveyed K-12 educators and other K-12 school employees to gather data about negative school workplace climate using the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R). Through the NAQ-R and other demographic survey questions, the researcher studied the prevalence and characteristics of adult-on-adult bullying in the K-12 workplace. Categories of Emotional Intimidation, Workplace Intimidation, and Physical Intimidation were identified and regressions were completed to analyze results against a study by Einarsen, Hoel, and Notelaers (2009). Using R. J. Bies's four categories of interactional justice, the characteristics of adult bullying in the K-12 workplace were identified and analyzed to …
The Historical Significance Of Judge Learned Hand: What Endures And Why, Edward A. Purcell Jr.
The Historical Significance Of Judge Learned Hand: What Endures And Why, Edward A. Purcell Jr.
Articles & Chapters
The 100th anniversary of Judge Learned Hand's opinion in Masses Publishing Co. v. Patten' invites us to look back on its author's long career and to consider his contributions to American law and his significance in the nation's history. Spanning more than fifty years from the presidency of William Howard Taft to the presidency of John F. Kennedy, Hand's judicial career presents an exceptionally rich subject for such reflection.
