Puf Proteins: Regulation Of Condition-Specific Mrna Decay And Contributions To Ribosome Biogenesis In Yeast, Anthony Fischer Nov 2018

Puf Proteins: Regulation Of Condition-Specific Mrna Decay And Contributions To Ribosome Biogenesis In Yeast, Anthony Fischer

Dissertations

Regulation of protein expression is critical to organism survival. Multiple disease states arise from aberrant accumulation/aggregation of proteins or reduced production of key enzymes. Cells have many ways to manipulate protein levels, including transcription factors, chromatin modification, modification of messenger RNA (mRNA), and manipulation of proteolytic protein decay. Cells can indirectly control protein volume by controlling mRNA lifespan, which is directly correlated with protein output. Often, sequence-specific elements in mRNA contribute to this lifespan. The Puf family of RNA-binding proteins is ubiquitous throughout eukarya, and plays important cellular and developmental roles through mRNA lifespan regulation. Puf proteins contain a C-terminal …

Recent advances in genomic sequencing technology and computational assembly methods have allowed scientists to improve reference genome assemblies in terms of contiguity and composition. EquCab2, a reference genome for the domestic horse, was released in 2007. Although of equal or better quality compared to other first-generation Sanger assemblies, it had many of the shortcomings common to them. In 2014, the equine genomics research community began a project to improve the reference sequence for the horse, building upon the solid foundation of EquCab2 and incorporating new short-read data, long-read data, and proximity ligation data. Here, we present EquCab3. The count of …

Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Juan J. Villalba, Fred Provenza, Ashley Longmore Nov 2018

Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Juan J. Villalba, Fred Provenza, Ashley Longmore

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)

Learning from mother begins early in the developmental process and can have lifelong effects when it comes to foraging behavior. Pregnancy is not just an incubation period but a starting point for animal well-being and disease later in life. A better understanding of the effects that early exposure to unpalatable feeds impinges on their use later in life may help create management plans that utilize grazing animals to their full potential as landscape manipulators.

Thus, the objective of this research was to explore how experience in utero and early in life with sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata spp. tridentata) -a …

Human Body Motions Optimization For Able-Bodied Individuals And Prosthesis Users During Activities Of Daily Living Using A Personalized Robot-Human Model, Dimitrios Menychtas Nov 2018

Human Body Motions Optimization For Able-Bodied Individuals And Prosthesis Users During Activities Of Daily Living Using A Personalized Robot-Human Model, Dimitrios Menychtas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current clinical practice regarding upper body prosthesis prescription and training is lacking a standarized, quantitative method to evaluate the impact of the prosthetic device. The amputee care team typically uses prior experiences to provide prescription and training customized for each individual. As a result, it is quite challenging to determine the right type and fit of a prosthesis and provide appropriate training to properly utilize it early in the process. It is also very difficult to anticipate expected and undesired compensatory motions due to reduced degrees of freedom of a prosthesis user. In an effort to address this, a tool …

Naturalizing Knowledge: The Project Of Evolutionary Epistemology, Dmitriy Cherchenko Nov 2018

Naturalizing Knowledge: The Project Of Evolutionary Epistemology, Dmitriy Cherchenko

University Honors Theses

Traditional epistemology deals with questions about the possible sources of knowledge, the conditions which make a belief an item of knowledge, and the extent to which we can know, as well as the nature of justification and what can make a belief justified for someone. Evolutionary epistemology (EE) breaks from TE to avoid its perceived shortcomings by both dismissing some traditional questions and emphasizing new, related questions that are more readily answerable given what we know about the biology and phylogenetic history of humans. The new questions assume that we are physical, naturally evolved beings and that cognition can be …

Social Transmission Of Ethanol Preference In A Sign-Tracking Paradigm, Pat Severino Nov 2018

Social Transmission Of Ethanol Preference In A Sign-Tracking Paradigm, Pat Severino

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Observer/ Demonstrator Effect suggests that rats can socially obtain preferences for novel foods/drugs by interacting with experienced conspecifics. Sign-tracking is a paradigm which uses a conditioning procedure to evoke compulsive-like behaviors directed towards a tangible conditioned stimulus (CS) paired with a motivating unconditioned stimulus (US). The present study investigated the possibility that increased alcohol use results from the combination of socially transmitted cues and the kind of conditioning effect seen in sign-tracking procedures. Therefore, it was hypothesized that social exposure to an alcohol-experienced conspecific would summate with the conditioning experience and increase the sign-tracking of a bottle CS containing …

Plantes: A Plant Electrophysiological Multi-Source Data Online Analysis And Sharing Platform, Chao Song, Xiao-Huang Qin, Qiao Zhou, Zi-Yang Wang, Wei-He Liu, Jun Li, Guiliang Tang, Et Al.

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

At present, plant electrophysiological data volumes and complexity are increasing rapidly. It causes the demand for efficient management of big data, data sharing among research groups, and fast analysis. In this paper, we proposed PlantES (Plant Electrophysiological Data Sharing), a distributed computing-based prototype system that can be used to store, manage, visualize, analyze, and share plant electrophysiological data. We deliberately designed a storage schema to manage the multi-source plant electrophysiological data by integrating distributed storage systems HDFS and HBase to access all kinds of files efficiently. To improve the online analysis efficiency, parallel computing algorithms on Spark were proposed and …

Actinomycin D And Telmisartan Combination Therapy Targets Lung Cancer Stem Cells, Ryan Green Nov 2018

Actinomycin D And Telmisartan Combination Therapy Targets Lung Cancer Stem Cells, Ryan Green

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The failure of lung cancer treatments has been attributed partly to the development of drug resistance, however the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. It has been suggested that a very small group of specific cells within the heterogeneous tumors, cancer initiating stem cells (CSC), develop resistance to treatment, survive and later initiate the growth of new tumors. Due to their pivotal role in maintenance and relapse of tumors following the acquisition of drug resistance, we reasoned that novel drugs targeting cancer cells and CSC might provide the most effective treatments, if not a cure. To this end, …

Fatty Acid Amides And Their Biosynthetic Enzymes Found In Insect Model Systems, Ryan L. Anderson Nov 2018

Fatty Acid Amides And Their Biosynthetic Enzymes Found In Insect Model Systems, Ryan L. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A fatty acid amide is precisely as the name suggests: A fatty acid (CHn-COOH), in which the hydroxyl group of the carboxylic acid is displaced by an amine functional group from a biogenic amine (R-NH2), ultimately forming an amide bond. Furthermore, these fatty acid amides can be composed of a variety of different acyl chain lengths donated by the fatty acid and a myriad of different biogenic amines. Thus, these molecules can be subdivided in a number of different ways including the separation of short chain (acetyl to heptanoyl) and long chain (palmitoyl to arachidonoyl) and also based off the …

Stavrogin: The Anti-Christ Of Demons, Drake Deornellis Nov 2018

Stavrogin: The Anti-Christ Of Demons, Drake Deornellis

The Kabod

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Demons is much more than the story of a political murder; it describes the clash of ideas in 1860s Russia as Russia battles between retaining its past national identity, rooted loosely in Eastern Orthodoxy, and Western ideas, rooted in atheism. It is a clash of politics, but even more it is a clash of religion. However, the opposing sides in the battle of religion appear far from balanced, for even Shatov, who supports Russian Orthodoxy, does not truly believe in God. Atheism seems to win out as all characters reject real, vital faith in God in some …

Dennis Littky, The Educational Activist: Can His Model Revamp The Public Educational System?, Dana Mitchell Barnes

School Leadership Review

When an individual observes a classroom of today, he will see many elements that are recognizable to anyone who attended school during the last one hundred years, students working from textbooks, repetitive worksheets, and rows of desks holding students completing tasks directed by the teacher. Even though societal and technological advancements are increasing rapidly, our school system has stayed stagnant. What this means for students is the lack of individuality, teachers’ non acceptance of personal interests, lack of personal voice, and in many cases, a non relationship between teacher and student beyond the classroom assignment (Castleman & Littky, 2007).

Holistic, Ethical Leadership For The 21st Century, David C. Barrett Nov 2018

Holistic, Ethical Leadership For The 21st Century, David C. Barrett

School Leadership Review

The New Oxford American Dictionary (2001) delineates two definitions for a leader: “1) The person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country; a person followed by others. 2) A short strip of nonfunctioning material at each end of a reel of film or recording tape for connection to the spool.” How often does the latter definition seem more applicable for many of our educational leaders than the former? What are the philosophical foundations of leadership? What does a modern, ethical leader look like? These are just a few questions that will be explored in this article. The challenge …

The Role Of Arginyltransferase Ate1 In Prostate Cancer Progression, Michael D. Birnbaum Nov 2018

The Role Of Arginyltransferase Ate1 In Prostate Cancer Progression, Michael D. Birnbaum

Open Access Dissertations

Prostate cancer is a major disease affecting millions of men every year, with hundreds of thousands of new diagnoses and tens of thousands of deaths per year. Most deaths from prostate cancer result from metastasis of the disease. However, the causes for metastasis of prostate cancer (PC) remain poorly understood, making its prediction and treatment a major challenge. Recently, a significant reduction of Arginyltranferase1 (Ate1) was observed in prostate cancer remote metastatic sites, suggesting Ate1 may be involved in the progression of PC. However, the exact role of Ate1 in PC remains unknown. Ate1 is the enzyme that mediates arginylation, …

Cut The Sky, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2018-2019 Borders and Boundaries

Is it a rock concert? Modern dance? A plea for environmental action and the rights of Indigenous peoples? Cut the Sky by Marrugeku, Australia’s preeminent dance theater ensemble of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, is all three. As soul singer Ngaire belts out tunes ranging from Nick Cave to Buffalo Springfield Australian “post-soul” music, Marrugeku’s “incredibly expressive and visceral” dancers (The Guardian) form a band of climate change refugees struggling to survive another extreme weather event. Moving backward and forward in time, Cut the Sky meditates on humanity’s frailty in the face of its own actions.
