‘There Must Be More Than This Provincial Life:’ An Analysis Of The Construction Of Femininity Of Princesses In Disney Animated Films, Kelsey Grace Mcdougall

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

"In this thesis, I analyze three eras of princesses in Disney animated films in terms of how gender and femininity are portrayed in each era, and investigate whether each era parallels the goals/issues addressed by the first, second, third, and/or fourth-wave feminism movements. I also investigate how increasing numbers of women in filmmaking roles have changed the ways female characters are portrayed in Disney films. I analyze Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Cinderella (1950), and Sleeping Beauty (1959) for the first era; The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Aladdin (1992) for the second era; …

Disparate Impact And Voting Rights: How Objections To Impact-Based Claims Prevent Plaintiffs From Prevailing In Cases Challenging New Forms Of Disenfranchisement, Jamelia Morgan Jan 2018

Disparate Impact And Voting Rights: How Objections To Impact-Based Claims Prevent Plaintiffs From Prevailing In Cases Challenging New Forms Of Disenfranchisement, Jamelia Morgan

Faculty Articles and Papers

As this article will show, the reluctance of courts to accept evidence of "impact plus" stems in part from a concern that the remedies required by impact-based claims under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act will involve essentialism and an affront to individual dignity. These concerns are animated in the vote dilution context where, in cases challenging the dilution of the minority vote, and not involving intentional vote dilution, objections have centered on the notion that Section 2's results test requires courts to make essentialist claims regarding minority and non-minority voting patterns and election choices. Such objections are misplaced …

Self-Knowledge For Lawyers: What It Is And Why It Matters, Thomas Morawetz Jan 2018

Self-Knowledge For Lawyers: What It Is And Why It Matters, Thomas Morawetz

Faculty Articles and Papers

Anyone who has taught in law schools for three decades or more has witnessed a paradigm shift in legal education. From the 1960s through the 1980s, it was common to ask how law school differs from the kind of practical training that might be acquired in, say, apprenticeship to a practitioner. A frequent answer was to compare law schools with graduate schools in arts and sciences and to argue that the law students were taught similar skills of reasoning, normative evaluation, cultural contextualization, and self-examination. For the most part it was taken for granted that academic scholars aspired to these …

Determination Of In Situ Degradation Kinetics Of Some Legume Waste Not Used For Human Consumption, Şevket Evci̇, Mehmet Aki̇f Karsli Jan 2018

Determination Of In Situ Degradation Kinetics Of Some Legume Waste Not Used For Human Consumption, Şevket Evci̇, Mehmet Aki̇f Karsli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the chemical composition, in situ ruminal degradation kinetics, and protein fractions of subsieve dry beans (DB), chickpeas (CCP), red lentils (RL), and green lentils (GL). Four samples of those legumes were utilized as replicates and were incubated for up to 48 h in the rumen of 3 rams. RL and CCP had higher organic matter (OM) than DB and GL. Crude protein (CP) was the highest in GL (P < 0.05). Ether extract (EE) concentrations were higher in CCP and DB compared to those of RL and GL (P < 0.05). Crude fiber (CF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents were the highest in RL (P < 0.05). The acid insoluble nitrogen (ADIN-N) content was similar in all samples evaluated. While RL had the lowest OM and CP degradability and water-soluble OM and CP concentrations, DB and CCP had the highest potentially degradable OM and CP contents at the end of the 48 h incubation period (P < 0.05). Escaped protein content was the highest in RL and the lowest in DB (P < 0.05). In conclusion, some of the pulse species that are produced locally and not suitable for human consumption can be used in the diet of ruminant animals as a source of protein based on OM and CP degradabilities and escape protein contents.

The Origin Of Dark Mats At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408) Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, Sean Stcherbinine Jan 2018

The Origin Of Dark Mats At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408) Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, Sean Stcherbinine

All Master's Theses

The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site is a precontact archaeological site located in the upland forest soils of Mount Rainier National Park. Site stratigraphy is complicated, consisting of tephra deposits from mostly known origins that are intercalated with dark sediments of unknown origin, referred to here as dark mats. Precontact occupation has been split previously into two components based on the ambiguous depositional history of the dark mats, notably their unknown parent material, depositional environment, and relationship with adjacent tephra strata. Stratigraphic samples from excavation units, features, and one off-site excavation unit was used to investigate these data gaps. Grain …

Sino Evil − See No Evil: Graphic Violence In Octave Mirbeau And Judith Gautier, Juliana Starr Jan 2018

Sino Evil − See No Evil: Graphic Violence In Octave Mirbeau And Judith Gautier, Juliana Starr

Foreign Languages Faculty Publications

"I Call Alexa To The Stand": The Privacy Implications Of Anthropomorphizing Virtual Assistants Accompanying Smart-Home Technology, Christopher B. Burkett Jan 2018

"I Call Alexa To The Stand": The Privacy Implications Of Anthropomorphizing Virtual Assistants Accompanying Smart-Home Technology, Christopher B. Burkett

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Note offers a solution to the unique privacy issues posed by the increasingly humanlike interactions users have with virtual assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa, which accompany smart-home technology. These interactions almost certainly result in the users engaging in the cognitive phenomenon of anthropomorphism--more specifically, an assignment of agency. This is a phenomenon that has heretofore been ignored in the legal context, but both the rapidity of technological advancement and inadequacy of current applicable legal doctrine necessitate its consideration now. Since users view these anthropomorphized virtual assistants as persons rather than machines, the law should treat them as such. To …

Disproportionate Realities: The Climate Justice Implications Of Mitigation Policies Across Scales, Tinuviel Carlson Jan 2018

Disproportionate Realities: The Climate Justice Implications Of Mitigation Policies Across Scales, Tinuviel Carlson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Global climate change will have disproportionate effects on low-income and minority communities around the world producing important justice challenges. As national governments increasingly rely on local governments, civil society, and private transnational actors to establish and implement climate actions policies, it is important to assess whether and how these newly emergent actors can address these justice challenges. First this thesis examines concepts of justice in relation to climate change across different scales in order to develop a comprehensive conceptual framework of climate justice. This conceptual framework expands the scale of the international climate justice movement address local concerns. Further, the …

The Meaning Of Rights, 51 J. Marshall L. Rev. 503 (2018), Anuj Puri Jan 2018

The Meaning Of Rights, 51 J. Marshall L. Rev. 503 (2018), Anuj Puri

UIC Law Review

In an increasingly inward-looking world governed by populist governments, existing theories of rights are struggling to protect and expand individual rights. This failure can be attributed both to the present conception of rights as well as the absence of a unifying theme to address the existence and conflict of rights. In the present paper I argue that this unifying theme, which is necessary for protection and expansion of individual rights, is provided by “meaning” in an existential and linguistic sense. I assert that the greatest challenge faced by individual rights is in form of a faceless populist doctrine called “public …

Electron Nuclear Dynamics Simulations Of Proton Cancer Therapy Reactions: Water Radiolysis And Proton- And Electron-Induced Dna Damage In Computational Prototypes, Erico S. Teixeira, Karthik Uppulury, Austin J. Privett, Christopher Stopera, Patrick M. Mclaurin, Jorge A. Morales Jan 2018

Electron Nuclear Dynamics Simulations Of Proton Cancer Therapy Reactions: Water Radiolysis And Proton- And Electron-Induced Dna Damage In Computational Prototypes, Erico S. Teixeira, Karthik Uppulury, Austin J. Privett, Christopher Stopera, Patrick M. Mclaurin, Jorge A. Morales

Chemistry and Occupational Health Science

Proton cancer therapy (PCT) utilizes high-energy proton projectiles to obliterate cancerous tumors with low damage to healthy tissues and without the side effects of X-ray therapy. The healing action of the protons results from their damage on cancerous cell DNA. Despite established clinical use, the chemical mechanisms of PCT reactions at the molecular level remain elusive. This situation prevents a rational design of PCT that can maximize its therapeutic power and minimize its side effects. The incomplete characterization of PCT reactions is partially due to the health risks associated with experimental/clinical techniques applied to human subjects. To overcome this situation, …

Hymnody Of Change: A Study Of Classical African Orature In A Social Justice Context, Keith L. Royal Jan 2018

Hymnody Of Change: A Study Of Classical African Orature In A Social Justice Context, Keith L. Royal

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Communal music has been and is still a prominent method of cultural expression for generations, in particular for the generations of displaced Africans on American soil. The roots of this music, an amalgam of African tradition and a forced Christianity, have remained a constant companion to African American cultural response to inequity. Thus, it is imperative that communication tools be developed that allow analysis of this music, collections of communally sung works that communicate the destruction and continual reconstruction of a colonized culture. The purpose of this study is to explicate communally sung hymns, those sung in a social justice …

The Constitutional Conundrum: Commerce And The Tenth Amendment, Jennifer Marie Walker Jan 2018

The Constitutional Conundrum: Commerce And The Tenth Amendment, Jennifer Marie Walker

Capstones and Honors Theses

Since the drafting of the United States Constitution, the power of both the federal government and the individual state governments has been a topic of controversy. The Constitution's strong focus on federal powers ultimately threatened to derail ratification. To secure the ratification of the Constitution, a Bill of Rights was added to the document. Comprised of ten amendments, the Bill of Rights generally elaborated on individual rights. The Tenth Amendment, however, dealt more specifically with the federal-state relationship. Several early federal court cases established the federal judiciary's power to answer important Constitutional questions. This power thus granted the federal judiciary …

Zwitterionic Polymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Yang Lu Jan 2018

Zwitterionic Polymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Yang Lu

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the applications of zwitterionic polymer materials in drug delivery. In one project, zwitterionic polymer was used to construct micelle surfactants. The zwitterionic micelles were found to have an ultralow critical micelle concentration (CMC). Potential mechanism for zwitterionic micelles achieving the ultralow CMC property has been studied. Based on the ultralow CMC feature, zwitterionic micelles were used to prepare a formulation of commercial antitumor drug docetaxel, and the resulting formulation showed excellent antitumor performance. In another project, zwitterionic polymer was used to modify protein drug insulin via conjugation reaction. Compared with current protein modification methods, such as …

Study Of Mri Signal In The Presence Of Discrete Spherical Magnetic Particles, Paul Kokeny Jan 2018

Study Of Mri Signal In The Presence Of Discrete Spherical Magnetic Particles, Paul Kokeny

Wayne State University Dissertations

Simulating signal behavior in Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) is often a necessary step in being able to understand how signal relates to certain physiological parameters. One such parameter of interest in the body is magnetic susceptibility since it is related to iron content. The bulk magnetic susceptibility of an object is a property that describes how magnetized it becomes when placed in an external magnetic field. When the bulk susceptibility of an object arises from the presence of discrete magnetic inclusions, the MRI phase signal inside the object can no longer be determined analytically by assuming it has a continuous …

Addressing The Threat Of Multidrug Resistant Infectious Diseases By Synthesis Of Novel Aminoglycoside Antibiotics, Girish Chandra Sati Jan 2018

Addressing The Threat Of Multidrug Resistant Infectious Diseases By Synthesis Of Novel Aminoglycoside Antibiotics, Girish Chandra Sati

Wayne State University Dissertations

The ever-growing increase in multidrug resistant infectious diseases is one of the major cause of human mortality, and there is an inherent need for the development of new antibiotics. Since the discovery of streptomycin, AGAs have been playing a very important role in human therapy as highly potent broad-spectrum antibiotics and are listed as one of the critically important antimicrobials by WHO. AGAs act by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis and by targeting the A-site present in the small subunit of bacterial ribosome. The clinical use of AGAs is somewhat restricted due to their toxic effects (ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity) and …

Proteolipid Protein 1 Regulates Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Whitney Hoff Jan 2018

Proteolipid Protein 1 Regulates Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Whitney Hoff

Wayne State University Theses

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) results from mutations in the proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) gene including PLP1 duplications and deletions. The absence of PLP is preferable to PLP1/Plp1 duplication in PMD patients and rodents as lifespan of PLP1/Plp1 null mammals is nearly normal. The reason for this is not entirely understood. However, because of this, less attention has been placed on Plp1 null mutations than on classical PMD mutations. However, data show that PLP levels must be properly titrated to ensure normal brain function. Specifically, changes in PLP1/Plp1 expression can result in massive microglia activation in animal models of PMD and likely …

The Effect Of Short-Term Supplementation Of Potato Starch And Vsl#3 On The Large Intestines Of Male C57bl/6 Mice, Kaitlyn R. Merz

Wayne State University Theses

The microbiome is extremely complex and presumed to be involved in several biological processes. Dysbiosis is associated with development of several diseases, therefore, eubiosis is essential for prevention and treatment, possibly achieved through prebiotic or probiotic supplementation. The objective of this study was to establish effects of short-term supplementation on large intestine microbiota, pH and inflammatory cytokines. Large intestines of 21 day old C57BL/6 male mice that were given a control diet or supplemented with 10% potato starch or VSL#3 short-term, were analyzed for shifts in bacteria, pH, and inflammatory cytokine concentration. Large intestine digesta bacteria concentration differed from feces …

Utopian Thinking For Progressive Constitutionalists, Mark Tushnet Jan 2018

Utopian Thinking For Progressive Constitutionalists, Mark Tushnet

Indiana Law Journal

The opening pages of Rousseau’s Social Contract have two striking phrases. The more celebrated is, “[m]an was born free, and everywhere he is in chains.” That, though, is preceded by this: “I want to inquire whether, taking men as they are and laws as they can be made to be, it is possible to establish some just and reliable rule of administration in civil affairs.” I take this second sentence as my guide: Taking the textual Constitution as it is and with the interpreted Constitution as it could be, can there be a constitutionalism that progressives could wholeheartedly endorse?

I …
