Margin Matters: How To Live On A Simple Budget And Crush Debt Forever, Jason Brown
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
According to NerdWallet, 75 percent of Americans do not live off a budget and half of them cannot produce $400 in an emergency. But how much you make isn’t the main concern—it’s your margin that matters most. This capstone, which includes several chapters from the book Margin Matters: How to Live on a Simple Budget and Crush Debt Forever, provides practical strategies for creating and sticking to a simple budget, eliminating debt permanently, and managing expenses to create the most margin at any income level. It describes how the author erased nearly $75,000 of debt in just under three …

In Ghana, iodine deficiency was first reported in 1994 among 33% of the population. A nationwide Universal Salt Iodization (USI) program plus other complementary interventions were subsequently implemented as a response. Our paper reviews the current risks of excess iodine status in Ghana and identifies policy and research gaps. A mixed methods review of 12 policies and institutional reports and 13 peer‐reviewed articles was complemented with consultations with 23 key informants (salt producers and distributors, food processors, regulatory agency officials, and healthcare providers) purposively sampled between May and August 2017. The findings show a strong policy environment indicated by regulations …
Commons: Can This Be The Name Of ‘Thirdness’? (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann
Commons: Can This Be The Name Of ‘Thirdness’? (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In 1995, a journal article asked if 'commons' might be the name of 'thirdness'. In this revision of that article the question is renewed and reintroduced. The concept of the commons and common goods still offer satisfactory ways to label and characterize voluntary action outside markets, states and households. Theory is said to be a problem of language. Language creativity, including the coining of various new terms is a characteristic part of the commons theory of voluntary action. The remaining challenge is how the concept of the commons can relate to the other side of the third sector - the …

Multi-Metric Conservation Assessment For The Imperiled Clinch Dace, Michael James Moore, Donald J. Orth, Eric M. Hallerman
Multi-Metric Conservation Assessment For The Imperiled Clinch Dace, Michael James Moore, Donald J. Orth, Eric M. Hallerman
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
Planning frameworks allow managers to spatially prioritize actions to promote species conservation. Traditional aquatic conservation planning frameworks are often organized at the ecological community or ecosystem level, which often neglect imperiled taxa occupying species-poor assemblages. In this study, we develop a multi-metric conservation assessment for the 15 geographically distinct candidate conservation areas (CCAs) occupied by the imperiled Clinch Dace (Chrosomus sp. cf. saylori). Clinch Dace habitat is threatened by anthropogenic landscape alterations, especially for coal mining and timber harvest. Our framework used four metrics to assess the conservation value of each subpopulation of Clinch Dace namely: “habitat …

The Desensitizing Role Of Media Violence And Emotion Dysregulation In Emotional And Behavioral Responses To A Violent Game, Suji Park
Doctoral Dissertations
Previous video game research has not focused on personality variables that may result in variations within aggression after playing a violent game as much. This study is to investigate the role of emotion dysregulation, trait empathy, and previous exposure to violent media in explaining the effects of game play on emotional and behavioral responses, including immersion, guilt, enjoyment, and physically aggressive intentions. In addition, this study examines potential links among violent media use and psychological variables: previous violent TV viewing, previous violent game play, emotion dysregulation, and empathy. The theoretical explanation of the General Aggression Model—specifically, desensitization effects of media …

It is often hypothesized that intra-sexual competition accelerates actuarial senescence, or the increase in mortality rates with age. However, an alternative hypothesis is that parental investment is more important to determining senescence rates. We used a unique model system, the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), to study variation in actuarial senescence. In this species, genetically determined morphs display discrete mating strategies and disassortative pairing, providing an excellent opportunity to test the predictions of the above hypotheses. Compared to tan-striped males, white-striped males are more polygynous and aggressive, and less parental. Tan-striped females receive less parental support, and invest more into parental …

Effects Of Cutting Angle And Processing Methods On Quality Factorsand Volatile Flavor Compounds Of Steak, Meng Xiangren, Wu Peng, Wang Hengpeng, Chen Wenyu, Tu Mingliang
Food and Machinery
The chilled beef of Horqin West was used to cut in three angles of parallel, vertical and 45 degrees, with the muscle fibers, and cooked by the ways of roasting, decocting and microwave heating. The quality factors (color, texture, cooking loss), and the etermination and analysis of volatile flavor substances in different cutting angles and ripening methods were carried out. The results showed that the ripening method had a significant influence on the color difference of the steak, and the steak with the mature and vertical muscle fiber cutting showed the lowest in the cooking water loss rate. In physical …

Effect Of Oxidized Tallow On The Flavor Of Natural Beef Flavor, Fan Xiaopan, Liu Jingjing, Liang Liya, Wu Chenyan, Ma Lizhen
Food and Machinery
Beef flavor were manufactured from minced beef-bone using the hot-pressure extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis and Maillard reaction control integration technology in this study. Fat moderate oxidation were used to further enhance their flavor. The different oxidized tallows were added during the Maillard reaction, and the oxidation degree of tallow were analyzed. Thereafter, the flavor of oxidized beef flavor was analyzed by electronic nose, electronic tongue and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The addition of oxidized tallow could increase the content of aroma compounds in oxidized beef flavor. When the oxidation time was 2 h, it would have the greatest contribution to the aroma …

Effect Of Ultrafine Grinding On Particle Structure, Effective Compositionsand Antioxidant Activity Of L. Macranthoides, Wu Zhen, Zhan Yong, Li Hong, Yang Yong, Tan Hongjun, Huang Xiaoping, Wang Haiyan
Food and Machinery
In order to explore the comprehensive utilization value of L. macranthoides, investigated the particle structure, effective compositions contents, dissolution rate and antioxidant activity of L. macranthoides processed ultrafine and common grinding. It was found that the ultrastructure of L. macranthoides was changed by ultrafine grinding, and its cell wall and crude fiber structure were destroyed. The dissolution contents of chlorogenic acid, Macranthoidin B, Dipsacoside B, Luteolin 7-glucoside and caffeic acid were increased after ultrafine grinding. The dissolution rate of chlorogenic acid from ultra-fine griding powder was significantly higher than that of common griding power of L. macranthoides. Furthermore, scavenging ability …

Background: Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation (tUS) is an emerging technique that uses ultrasonic waves to noninvasively modulate brain activity. As with other forms of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), tUS may be useful for altering cortical excitability and neuroplasticity for a variety of research and clinical applications. The effects of tUS on cortical excitability are still unclear, and further complications arise from the wide parameter space offered by various types of devices, transducer arrangements, and stimulation protocols. Diagnostic ultrasound imaging devices are safe, commonly available systems that may be useful for tUS. However, the feasibility of modifying brain activity with diagnostic tUS …
Racialized Rescue Narratives In Public Discourses On Youth Prostitution And Sex Trafficking In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
Racialized Rescue Narratives In Public Discourses On Youth Prostitution And Sex Trafficking In The United States, Carrie N. Baker
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This article presents an analysis of how activists, politicians, and the media framed youth involvement in the sex trade during the 1970s, the 1990s, and the 2000s in the United States. Across these periods of public concern about the issue, similar framing has recurred that has drawn upon gendered and racialized notions of victimization and perpetration. This frame has successfully brought attention to this issue by exploiting public anxieties at historical moments when social change was threatening white male dominance. Using intersectional feminist theory, I argue that mainstream rhetoric opposing the youth sex trade worked largely within neoliberal logics, ignoring …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since miRNAs discovery, evidence keeps accumulating on their role in human physiology for homeostasis and implications during disease development. Upon the discovery that miRNAs could be encapsulated in exosomes and provide protection, evidence keeps accumulating on the possibility for miRNAs to be transferred between distant cells and elicit gene expression changes, and clinical trials are being developed to identify miRNAs in body fluids that could predict disease outcomes based on miRNA encapsulation in exosomes making them stable in body fluids. Recently, studies have shown that dietary miRNAs encapsulated in exosomes can be absorbed in mice and humans, and on the …
