Field Day Success Loop, Jacqueline Comito, Brandy Case Haub, Nathan Stevenson Dec 2017

Field Day Success Loop, Jacqueline Comito, Brandy Case Haub, Nathan Stevenson

Journal of Extension

Field days continue to be useful for Extension professionals conducting outreach with farmers, so long as those events incorporate an interpersonal, farmer-led instructional style and are followed up with an evaluation strategy that documents the long-term influences field day attendees have on their peers. At Iowa Learning Farms, we have formulated a successful method for conducting field days that has led to a set of progressive impacts we refer to as the "field day success loop." By drawing on the multifaceted approach to evaluation that contributes to the success loop, Extension professionals can strengthen their own field days and track …

A Web-Based Chill Hours App For Fruit Growers, Eric T. Stafne, Kelli Alexander Dec 2017

A Web-Based Chill Hours App For Fruit Growers, Eric T. Stafne, Kelli Alexander

Journal of Extension

Many fruit plants have a chill hour requirement for breaking dormancy. Various models estimate chilling, but two models are commonly used for fruit crops. From 2000 to 2016, chill hour data were collected by Mississippi State University experiment station employees as well as by local fruit producers; however, the number of participants in the process dwindled over time. To address this issue, we developed a mobile-friendly web application to interface with Weather Underground data. From these data, fruit growers can assess growing conditions that affect plant physiology and prepare for events in the upcoming season. Extension professionals can introduce the …

Understanding Predictors Of Nutrient Management Practice Diversity In Midwestern Agriculture, Hanna Bates, J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr. Dec 2017

Understanding Predictors Of Nutrient Management Practice Diversity In Midwestern Agriculture, Hanna Bates, J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr.

Journal of Extension

Agriculture's negative effect on water quality has become increasingly well documented. Farmers have a range of conservation practices available, yet rate of adoption is not optimal. Extension and other agricultural stakeholders play a key role in promotion of conservation practice adoption. We used survey data to examine relationships between farmers' integration in agricultural social networks and diversity of conservation practices used. Farmers who were more engaged in agricultural organizations and social networks tended to report greater diversity in nutrient best management practices. Conversely, less "connected" farmers reported less management practice diversity. Opportunities for Extension to engage with both groups exist.

Drones In Extension Programming: Implementation Of Adult And Youth Activities, Jason P. De Koff

Journal of Extension

The use of unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), or consumer drones, in agriculture has the potential to revolutionize the way certain farm practices are conducted and the way science, technology, engineering, and math principles can be taught. Currently, there is need for UAS training for both adults and youths, and that need will increase with the expected growth of the UAS industry. This article addresses the need to include UASs in Extension programming, the associated legalities, and the best types of UASs to use in such programming.

Establishing A Common Language: The Meaning Of Research-Based And Evidence-Based Programming (In The Human Sciences), Debra M. Sellers, Lisa M. Schainker, Peggy Lockhart, Hsiu Chen Yeh

Journal of Extension

This article describes the development, implementation, and exploratory evaluation of a professional development series that addressed educators' knowledge and use of the terms research-based and evidence-based within Human Sciences Extension and Outreach at one university. Respondents to a follow-up survey were more likely to select correctly the commonly accepted standard for each term, and they reported asking more questions, talking with others, examining programs' evidence bases, and placing more value on fidelity and evaluation following participation in the professional development series. Educator reactions to the series were generally positive, although researchers interested in designing like programs might consider engaging educators …

Women On Boards Of Philippine Publicly Traded Firms: Does Gender Diversity Affect Corporate Risk-Taking Behavior?, Michelle Kris A. Ong Yiu, Louie Angelo Ricafrente, Angelo A. Unite, Ailyn A. Shi, Michael J. Sullivan Dec 2017

Women On Boards Of Philippine Publicly Traded Firms: Does Gender Diversity Affect Corporate Risk-Taking Behavior?, Michelle Kris A. Ong Yiu, Louie Angelo Ricafrente, Angelo A. Unite, Ailyn A. Shi, Michael J. Sullivan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The idea that more women belong on corporate boards is attracting increased attention around the world. Some scholars argue that gender diversity on boards improves firm performance and induces more prudent corporate decision-making. This rationale is based on the hypothesis that women are less overconfident and are innately more risk-averse than men. Alternatively, other researchers argue that firms having more female directors are associated with greater corporate risk-taking as the profile of women making it to the board level has proven to be open to greater challenges and risks. Still another strand of literature argues that risk-aversion does not vary …

Small Open Economy Dsge Model With Natural Disaster And Foreign Aid, Dickson A. Lim Dec 2017

Small Open Economy Dsge Model With Natural Disaster And Foreign Aid, Dickson A. Lim

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The Philippines is one of the countries in the ASEAN region to be regularly hit by natural disasters. In an analysis of natural disaster hotspots, the Philippines is one among several countries where large percentages of the population reside in disaster-prone areas (Hazard Management Unit of the World Bank, 2005). Consequently, these catastrophic events also entail adverse macroeconomic impacts to the economy (Bergeijk & Lazzaroni, 2015). Raddatz (2007) estimated that climate-related disasters reduce real GDP per capita by 0.6%. In the Philippines, Benson (1997) reported a reduction in GDP growth rate forecast by 3.3% following the Luzon earthquake in July …

Acetobacter Fabarum Genes Influencing Drosophila Melanogaster Phenotypes, Kylie Makay White Dec 2017

Acetobacter Fabarum Genes Influencing Drosophila Melanogaster Phenotypes, Kylie Makay White

Theses and Dissertations

Research in our lab has predicted hundreds of bacterial genes that influence nine different traits in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. As a practical alternative to creating site-directed mutants for each of the predicted genes, we created an arrayed transposon insertion library using a strain of Acetobacter fabarum DsW_054 isolated from fruit flies. Creation of the Acetobacter fabarum DsW_054 gene knock-out library was done through random transposon insertion, combinatorial mapping and Illumina sequencing. Successful mapping of transposon insertion was achieved for 6418 mutants with hits within 63% of annotated genes within Acetobacter fabarum DsW_054. Insertion sites were verified in …

"It's Not Me, It's /U/: An Acoustic Analysis Of Target-Language Immersion's Effect On L1 English Speakers' Spanish Vowel Production" And "Tener: ¿Lo Tenemos Entendido?", Tanner Charles Linton

Theses and Dissertations

Within the field of second language acquisition of phonology, the role of immersion experiences on language learners' pronunciation has recently become a topic of greater interest. While students of a foreign language with study abroad experience (one to six months) have shown relatively little progress in pronunciation gains, language learners group with extended immersion experience—approximately 24 months abroad—have demonstrated more native-like pronunciation. This study compares the pronunciation of L2 Spanish /u/ among native English speakers enrolled in the same third-year Spanish course who belong to two different groups based on the context of their previous language learning: extended immersion in …

Specific Learning Disability Assessment Of English Language Learners: An Investigation Of The Current Assessment Practices Of Utah School Psychologists, Jesika Lee Forbush Dec 2017

Specific Learning Disability Assessment Of English Language Learners: An Investigation Of The Current Assessment Practices Of Utah School Psychologists, Jesika Lee Forbush

Theses and Dissertations

The landscape of education and the students served in schools has changed over the last few decades and is becoming more diverse (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017). Methods of special education evaluation in schools are also changing to meet the needs of a dynamic population. Best practices for specific learning disability (SLD) identification recommend the use of effective evaluation methods that inform educational decisions. Many models of SLD identification have been proposed throughout the history of SLD classification. Though many school psychologists have relied on the discrepancy model of learning disability identification, many alternative evaluation methods are coming into …

Mineral Royalties: Historical Uses And Justifications, Jayni Foley Hein, Caroline Cecot Dec 2017

Mineral Royalties: Historical Uses And Justifications, Jayni Foley Hein, Caroline Cecot

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

Governments and private landowners have collected royalties on mineral resources for centuries. When comprehensive measures to account for the environmental externalities of mineral extraction are politically or practically unavailable, federal and state governments may consider adjusting royalty rates as an expedient way to account for these externalities and benefit society. One key policy question that has not received attention, however, is whether a royalty rate can and should be manipulated in this way, assuming statutory discretion to do so. This article fills that gap by evaluating the argument for increasing federal or state fossil fuel royalty rates through historical, theoretical, …

Navigating The Confluence: Sources Of Reconciliation Flowing Between The Human Right To Water And Economic Efficiency, Brett A. Miller Dec 2017

Navigating The Confluence: Sources Of Reconciliation Flowing Between The Human Right To Water And Economic Efficiency, Brett A. Miller

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

The purpose of this research is to identify the confluence of the law and economics disciplines, using these distinct channels of scholarship not as an empirical vessel to determine the “value” or “valueless” nature of water, but rather as a means to reconcile externalities among interested parties and to identify management strategies that embrace sentiments of economic efficiency throughout the arena of global hydrocommerce. The various perspectives on water, particularly with regards to an increasing global population and demand for freshwater, elicits an intricate mosaic of tensions concerning the availability, accessibility, provision, and protection of this fundamental natural resource.

Support Groups, Wise Advice, Gloria Martinez Dec 2017

Support Groups, Wise Advice, Gloria Martinez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The need for parents to attend programs such as the Parent Project and understand the effectiveness of parent education classes is important, especially for those raising troubled or out of control youth. At Partners For Peace they provide just that, parent education through the Parent Project program. It has been stated that support groups help parents alleviate stress (Armenta and Huerta, 2015) therefore, the project consisted of bringing former Parent Project graduates together to continue supporting each other by reconnecting them in a barbeque, providing free food and games for them and their families, and hosting an enrichment workshop facilitated …

Addressing Social Issues Affecting Vulnerable Populations In San Benito County Through Community Events, Lucila Alvarez Dec 2017

Addressing Social Issues Affecting Vulnerable Populations In San Benito County Through Community Events, Lucila Alvarez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In San Benito County there is a high concentration of Triqui community members. They originate from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico and flee their homeland due to political prosecution and violence. Many times, Triqui community members arrive in the United States speaking and understanding only their native Triqui language. Their customs and traditions clash with those of the United States and due to fear they isolate themselves and do not seek any community services. Community Solutions addressed these issues by organizing the first ever Indigenous Cultures Day in Hollister, CA on May 21, 2017. The event consisted of a …

Empowering Families To Achieve Secondary Education, Guadalupe Flemate

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many high school students in Monterey County are not pursuing secondary education. Through the Department of Community Services within Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association (CHISPA) a workshop to educate students and parents on the importance of education and the A-G high school requirements was implemented. The workshop’s purpose was to educate and empower parents to become familiar with high school A-G requirements and a support system towards their children’s education. By educating parents and students on the A-G high school requirements, more high school students will be on the right path to achieve a secondary education. The expected …

Amazonia contains a vast expanse of contiguous tropical forest and is influential in global carbon and hydrological cycles. Whether ancient Amazonia was highly disturbed or modestly impacted, and how ancient disturbances have shaped current forest ecosystem processes, is still under debate. Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs), which are anthropic soil types with enriched nutrient levels, are one of the primary lines of evidence for ancient human presence and landscape modifications in settings that mostly lack stone structures and which are today covered by vegetation. We assessed the potential of using moderate spatial resolution optical satellite imagery to predict ADEs across the …
