Multiple Perpetrator Sexual Assault: The Relationship Between The Number Of Perpetrators, Blame Attribution, And Victim Resistance, Yi Jin Genevieve Lim
Multiple Perpetrator Sexual Assault: The Relationship Between The Number Of Perpetrators, Blame Attribution, And Victim Resistance, Yi Jin Genevieve Lim
Student Theses
Sexual assault has been and continues to be a prevalent public health and social problem that can lead to severe ramifications for the victim. There has been growing research on multiple perpetrator sexual assault (MPSA) and how it qualitatively differs from single assailant offenses. However, there is a paucity of studies investigating the differences between sexual assault perpetrated by duos versus three or more individuals and how it affects victim behavioral responses and blame attribution. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the perceived level of victim blame and the number of perpetrators in MPSA cases contingent on the …
Nowcasting Philippine Economic Growth Using Midas Regression Modeling, Cesar C. Rufino
Nowcasting Philippine Economic Growth Using Midas Regression Modeling, Cesar C. Rufino
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Among the most anticipated data releases of the Philippine statistical system is the quarterly real gross domestic product. This all-important variable provides the basis for deriving the economic growth performance of the country on a year-on-year basis. Official publication of this statistics, however, comes at a significant delay of up to two months, upsetting the planning function of various economic stakeholders. Under this backdrop, data scientists coined the term “nowcasting,” which refers to the prediction of the present, the very near future, and the very recent past, based on information provided by available data that are sampled at higher frequencies …

Immigrant Status And Its Impact On Access To Health Care, Ignacio Navarro, Juan Ibarra, Andrew Anglemyer
HHS Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper explores disparities in health care access for undocumented immigrants in the United States. Using the case of California, we find that less than half of undocumented immigrants in this state report having health insurance. Additionally, our estimates show that, among the insured, US-born and naturalized citizens are significantly more likely to have a doctor visit in the previous year when compared to undocumented immigrants (aOR = 1.53%; 95% CI 1.15 - 2.04, aOR = 1.40%; 95% CI 1.05 - 1.87, respectively). Further, we find that US-born citizens are significantly more likely to use the ER in the previous …

The Impacts Of Interbank Connections: Evidence From Mergers And Acquisitions, Christina Zhang
The Impacts Of Interbank Connections: Evidence From Mergers And Acquisitions, Christina Zhang
College of Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
The paper identifies the difference between connected and unconnected deals and examines the impact of the interbank connections among M&A deals. Deals with connected advisors are generally more complex and larger than the ones without. In addition, target valuation is significantly higher for deals with connected advisors than the ones without. However, the completion rate is generally indifferent between the two types of deals, but the completion time is typically shorter for the deals with connected advisors. Moreover, targets' announcement returns are significantly positive when connected advisors are hired. Overall, it appears that interbank connections benefit the target firms.
Examining Movement Dynamics Of The Gulf Menhaden Fishery Using An Individual-Based Model, Robert D. Trigg Iii
Examining Movement Dynamics Of The Gulf Menhaden Fishery Using An Individual-Based Model, Robert D. Trigg Iii
Master's Theses
This study investigates the movement and harvest dynamics of the Gulf Menhaden Brevoortia patronus fishery. The fishery-dependent data collected by NOAA (years 2006-2009 and 2011) describe vessel-specific information on catch locations (latitude and longitude) and magnitude of harvest in metric tons (mt). A series of probability distribution functions (PDFs) were fit to the frequency distributions of number of harvests per day (Poisson), between-harvest distances (gamma), and harvest magnitude (log-normal). These analyses were used to inform an individual-based model (IBM). The IBM was run under several different spatial restriction regimes, including (1) current regulations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama; (2) …
Combined Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen And Temperature On Aerobic Respiration And Respiratory Recovery Responses Of The Spioniform Polychaete, Streblospio Gynobranchiata, In Relation To Body Size, Alyssa Bennett
Master's Theses
Elevated surface temperatures exacerbate the threat of hypoxia within coastal ecosystems. These two primary stressors likely interact as they elicit opposing physiological responses from marine organisms. Metabolic depression is typically associated with hypoxia, while metabolic rates increase with temperature. Moreover, physiological effects of combined stressors may not be additive. In light of increasing pressures from hypoxia, elevated ocean temperatures, and other stressors within coastal regions, studies need to examine effects of multiple stressors on physiology of coastal organisms.
Mass-specific aerobic respiration (VO2) was characterized as a proxy for metabolic cost of Streblospio gynobranchiata, at combined levels of …

Enterprise Social Media Use And Impact On Performance: The Role Of Workplace Integration And Positive Emotions, Murad Moqbel, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Organizations struggle to find ways to improve employees’ performance. To date, little research has empirically examined the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. Using social capital theory and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions as our theoretical framework, we investigate the relationship between enterprise social media use and knowledge workers’ performance. We tested our research model by collecting data from employees working for a large information technology firm in the Midwestern United States and analyzing the data using a structural equation modeling approach. The results suggest that enterprise social media use can increase workplace integration, which …

Arrow Of Time For Continuous Quantum Measurement, Justin Dressel, Areeya Chantasri, Andrew N. Jordan, Alexander N. Korotkov
Arrow Of Time For Continuous Quantum Measurement, Justin Dressel, Areeya Chantasri, Andrew N. Jordan, Alexander N. Korotkov
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We investigate the statistical arrow of time for a quantum system being monitored by a sequence of measurements. For a continuous qubit measurement example, we demonstrate that time-reversed evolution is always physically possible, provided that the measurement record is also negated. Despite this restoration of dynamical reversibility, a statistical arrow of time emerges, and may be quantified by the log-likelihood difference between forward and backward propagation hypotheses. We then show that such reversibility is a universal feature of nonprojective measurements, with forward or backward Janus measurement sequences that are time-reversed inverses of each other.

The issue of sexual assault on college campuses has emerged in the national spotlight in recent years. Advocacy groups, higher education officials, and the federal government are engaged in an ongoing conversation about best practices regarding prevention and response. Jesuit institutions have the unique challenge of engaging their students in conversations about consent and bystander intervention while also encouraging principles of good practice, particularly challenging students to high standards of personal behavior and responsibility through the formation of character and virtue. Through LMU CARES, Loyola Marymount University launched the “Live the Lion’s Code” campaign to engage the university community in …
Our Students’ Search For Meaning, Andrew Rohm
Our Students’ Search For Meaning, Andrew Rohm
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article offers a reflection on the role of faith, reason, and meaning as part of students’ educational experience. By intermixing elements of his personal journey with the development of course projects designed to infuse meaning within the classroom, the author examines the challenges that teachers often face when reconciling the idea of faith- and purpose-based learning as compared with a purely skills-based, vocational approach. The three course projects discussed highlight ways in which students apply course content and skills to higher-level outcomes that lead them to better understand their sense of connectedness, sense of community, and service. By overcoming …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And High School Students' Perceived Level Of Satisfaction Of Needs In Selected Southeast Tennessee Schools, Michael Caraccio
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
“Lack of motivation is a real and pressing problem. Upwards of 40 percent of high school students are chronically disengaged from school” (Crotty, 2013, para. 3). This problem highlights the purpose of this research, which was twofold. First, the research was designed to develop an assessment to measure students’ level of needs satisfaction using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Secondly, the assessment instrument was used to investigate the relationship between the level of satisfaction of needs and the academic achievement of high school students. The theoretical basis for this research was Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which was classified as an aspect …

Childhood Animal Cruelty Motives And Their Relationship To Recurrent Adult Interpersonal Crimes, Joseph Ketron
Childhood Animal Cruelty Motives And Their Relationship To Recurrent Adult Interpersonal Crimes, Joseph Ketron
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Although research investigating the link between childhood animal cruelty and adult interpersonal violence dates back to the early 1960s, few scholars have examined the predictive ability of childhood animal cruelty motives and their relationship to later violence toward humans. Based on a sample of 257 male inmates, the present study examines the relationship between four retrospectively identified motives for childhood animal cruelty and later adult interpersonal violence. Almost half of the inmates reported engaging in childhood animal cruelty for fun. Over one-third of the respondents reported committing acts of childhood animal cruelty out of anger. Approximately 20% of the inmates …
A Physics-Based Adaptive Point Distribution Method For Computational Domain Discretization, Philip W. Fackler
A Physics-Based Adaptive Point Distribution Method For Computational Domain Discretization, Philip W. Fackler
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Two algorithms are presented which together generate well-spaced point distributions applied to curves, surfaces, and the volume of a computational domain. The first is a force equilibrium simulation which applies a simplified direct solution of the equations of motion at each node. Inter-nodal pair forces are computed based on the desired spacing between nodes and summed to provide a net force on each node. The nodes are allowed to travel a restricted distance with each locally distinct time step. The motion of the point distribution is stabilized by applying friction to each node from its neighboring nodes as well as …
Higher Order Mesh Curving Using Geometry Curvature Extrapolation, Kristen Karman
Higher Order Mesh Curving Using Geometry Curvature Extrapolation, Kristen Karman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A higher order mesh curving method is developed which uses information from the geometry to determine the appropriate curvature of edges in the interior of the mesh. Edges are represented using four point Bézier curves to determine the positions of higher order edge points. Higher order face and volume points are positioned using the basis functions for serendipity face and volume elements. Parameters are defined which allow user specified control over element quality and the propagation of curvature in the mesh. Curved higher order meshes are shown for test cases in both two and three dimensions.

Gender Differences In Policing: A Consideration Of Care Ethics, Whitney Harvey
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Current research on gender differences in policing is somewhat limited. Research studies that examine the relationship between police officers and ethics of care theory are further limited. This study evaluated gender differences in policing to determine whether ethics of care theories apply to female police officers. For the purposes of this study, approximately 400 sworn officers were sampled via survey. The anticipated results were: female officers are more likely to employ ethics of care in their policing methods as opposed to their male counterparts.
Post-Fledging Habitat Use And Movements Of Worm-Eating Warblers In The Tennessee River Gorge, Holland Youngman
Post-Fledging Habitat Use And Movements Of Worm-Eating Warblers In The Tennessee River Gorge, Holland Youngman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Declines in Neotropical migratory birds have been observed over the past several decades. Species with particular habitat needs, termed ‘specialists’, are especially at risk given continual habitat loss. These downward trends have prompted researchers to investigate species’ life histories and associated habitats to better understand the necessary components for successful life stages. The Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum; WEWA) is an interior specialist with little known regarding its post-fledging habitat needs. I used harness-attached radio transmitters to track fledgling WEWAs in the Tennessee River Gorge to study habitat components and daily movements. Results between fledgling location and random points indicate that …
