Angle-Resolved Observation Of X-Ray Second Harmonic Generation In Diamond, Björn Senfftleben Dec 2017

Angle-Resolved Observation Of X-Ray Second Harmonic Generation In Diamond, Björn Senfftleben

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis reports angularly-resolved observation of X-ray second harmonic generation (XSHG) in diamond at several phase-matching geometries. The XSHG signal was produced by ultra-short, highly intense X-ray pulses with a photon energy of 9.831 keV generated by a free-electron laser. In some geometries for high pulse energies more than 10 second harmonic photons per pulse were generated.

Different phase-matched geometries were used for XSHG to investigate the angular dependence of the efficiency of the process. Furthermore, for each phase-matching condition, the quadratic dependence for second harmonic generation at each geometry was verified and the crystal rocking curves were measured. The …

Design And Construction Of A High-Current Femtosecond Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction Setup, Omid Zandi Dec 2017

Design And Construction Of A High-Current Femtosecond Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction Setup, Omid Zandi

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We designed and constructed a state-of-the-art high current ultrafast gas electron diffraction experimental setup, which resolved two main challenges that constraint temporal resolution in previous setups. These aforementioned bottlenecks were: the space charge effect due to the Coulomb expansion, and the velocity mismatch between the sub-relativistic electrons (probe) and the exciting laser pulse (pump). In our setup, the problem of space charge effect was ameliorated by compressing 90 keV photo-emitted electron pulses using a radio-frequency electric field. The compression allowed us to increase the beam current by almost two orders of magnitude higher than previously reported. We developed a laser-activated …

A Measurement Of The Wy Cross Section At √S = 8 Tev In Pp Collisions With The Cms Detector, Ekaterina Avdeeva Dec 2017

A Measurement Of The Wy Cross Section At √S = 8 Tev In Pp Collisions With The Cms Detector, Ekaterina Avdeeva

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A measurement of cross section of the Wγ → lνγ production in proton-proton collisions using 19.6 fb − 1 of LHC data collected by CMS detector at the center- √ of-mass collision energy of s = 8 TeV is reported. The W bosons are identified in their electron and muon decay modes. The process of Wγ production in the Standard Model (SM) involves a pure gauge boson coupling, a WWγ vertex, which allows one to test the electroweak sector of the SM in a unique way not achievable by studies of other processes. In addition to the total cross section, …

Pattern-Based Systems Engineering (Pbse) - Product Lifecycle Management (Plm) Integration And Validation, Rajat Gupta

Open Access Theses

Mass customization, small lot sizes, reduced cost, high variability of product types and changing product portfolio are characteristics of modern manufacturing systems during life cycle. A direct consequence of these characteristics is a more complex system and supply chain. Product lifecycle management (PLM) and model based system engineering (MBSE) are tools which have been proposed and implemented to address different aspects of this complexity and resulting challenges. Our previous work has successfully implemented a MBSE model into a PLM platform. More specifically, Pattern based system engineering (S* pattern) models of systems are integrated with TEAMCENTER to link and interface system …

Computational Analysis Of Spray Jet Flames, Utsav Jain Dec 2017

Computational Analysis Of Spray Jet Flames, Utsav Jain

Open Access Theses

There is a boost in the utilization of renewable sources of energy but because of high energy density applications, combustion will never be obsolete. Spray combustion is a type of multiphase combustion which has tremendous engineering applications in different fields, varying from energy conversion devices to rocket propulsion system. Developing accurate computational models for turbulent spray combustion is vital for improving the design of combustors and making them energy efficient. Flamelet models have been extensively used for gas phase combustion because of their relatively low computational cost to model the turbulence-chemistry interaction using a low dimensional manifold approach. This framework …

Ultrafast Laser-Induced Damage Threshold Of The Optical Materials In Near Infrared Region, Yun Jo Lee

Open Access Theses

Ultrafast optics is widely used in nowadays for optical communication, tomography, remote sensing and ranging, and even fabrication methods. In order to generating the ultrafast optical signals from such applicable devices, we need to understand the threshold that the material consisting the devices can bear without any damages. Materials’ Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds (LIDT) are varying with the laser’s characteristics that irradiated onto the material and the materials’ band gap energy. Abundant journals and papers had been published with this topic, however, it was not well studied in optical communication wavelength range. In this thesis, existing widely-accepted LIDT theory will be …

Effects Of Flood Control Strategies On Long-Term Flood Resilience Under Socio-Hydrological Disturbances, Kyungmin Sung Dec 2017

Effects Of Flood Control Strategies On Long-Term Flood Resilience Under Socio-Hydrological Disturbances, Kyungmin Sung

Open Access Theses

Human societies typically depend on hard engineering infrastructure such as dams and levees to protect themselves from floods. However, in this era of global change, this conventional approach is being increasingly challenged for its lack of adaptiveness. A growing number of studies suggest that an alternative strategy of flood control is needed to build long-term flood resilience. This study tackles this challenge by developing a conceptual model of the interplay between flood control strategies and long-term human-flood interaction. Our model development is motivated by a case of community-based flood protection system in coastal Bangladesh. We used the model to examine …

Physical Aggressiveness And Gray Matter Deficits In Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex, David S. Chester, Donald R. Lynam, Richard Milich, C. Nathan Dewall

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

What causes individuals to hurt others? Since the famous case of Phineas Gage, lesions of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) have been reliably linked to physically aggressive behavior. However, it is unclear whether naturally-occurring deficits in VMPFC, among normal individuals, might have widespread consequences for aggression. Using voxel based morphometry, we regressed gray matter density from the brains of 138 normal female and male adults onto their dispositional levels of physical aggression, verbal aggression, and sex, simultaneously. Physical, but not verbal, aggression was associated with reduced gray matter volume in the VMPFC and to a lesser extent, frontopolar cortex. Participants …

The Work Ethic Gap: Comparing Perceptions Of Students, Educators, And Employers, Joseph Routhier

All NMU Master's Theses

Work ethic has been a constant, but elusive topic for decades. This study sought to identify the differences in perception of work ethic in between students, educators, and employers. Seventy-two participants observed videos of workers in various tasks and rated the perceived work ethic of the person in the video by using a sliding Likert scale. Additionally, participants were asked to comment as to why they rated the worker the way they did. Quantitative analyses were used to determine differences in the participant’s work ethic ratings. Qualitative analyses interpreted respondents’ comments to better understand the results. Results indicated that while …

Delayed Effects Of Sub-Lethal Lampricide, 3-Trifluoromethyl-4-Nitrophenol (Tfm), Exposure On The Metabolic Physiology Of Juvenile Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser Fulvescens), Matthew J. Symbal

All NMU Master's Theses

The lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) can be lethal to juvenile lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) at high concentrations used to control invasive sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). Little is known about how TFM would affect juvenile lake sturgeon (age-0) at the sub-lethal concentrations encountered during routine lampricide treatments; specifically, its effects on growth, stress response, and metabolism. Age-0 lake sturgeon were exposed to TFM concentrations at levels 0.0x, 0.5x, and 1.0x the minimum lethal concentration (mlc) of TFM required to kill 99.9% of sea lamprey larvae during a routine stream treatment. The mlc was estimated based on pH and alkalinity …

A Road Out Of Naknek Part One: The Tide Turns, Keith Wilson

All NMU Master's Theses

I make an annual summertime return to Naknek, a town on Bristol Bay where the salmon have made their own annual summertime return for thousands of years. My thesis is a series of nonfiction essays about my background there, both as a commercial fisherman and my upbringing. It is something I consider the “Part One” of a book still under the process of writing. It is a series of essays, alternating these two motifs of the salmon and of my experiences growing up somewhere like Naknek.

I constructed this thesis to read like the tide. Bristol Bay salmon go out …

A Comparison Of Mean Age Theory And Residence Time Distributions In Mixed Systems., Nolan Theaker Dec 2017

A Comparison Of Mean Age Theory And Residence Time Distributions In Mixed Systems., Nolan Theaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparison between mean age theory and conventional residence time distributions over a range of quantified mixing levels was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The system was a stirred tubular reactor. The model was validated by comparing computationally derived RTD curves with experimentally obtained RTD curves, with quantified differences less than 3%. Mixing was quantified using the Tanks-in-Series model. Mixing levels were set by varying flow rate and impeller rpm. Mean age distributions at the outlet, where experimental RTD’s were measured, were very narrow for all levels of mixing studied. RTD’s showed expected characteristics; a wider distribution and long …
