The Impact Of Integrative Programs And Services On International Students’ Transitions At Three Regional State Colleges, Patriece Campbell Dec 2017

The Impact Of Integrative Programs And Services On International Students’ Transitions At Three Regional State Colleges, Patriece Campbell

All Theses And Dissertations

Over one million international students study at colleges and universities across the U.S. each year. Yet, some international students struggle academically, not because they do not have the cognitive intelligence to excel but they find it difficult to adapt into the American academic culture that is oftentimes significantly different from their own. The study sought to understand the use of integrative programs and services at three select Pennsylvania state institutions and their impact on international students’ successful transition as a part of their campus community. The intent of this study was to understand the complexities that international students face as …

Cenozoic Sedimentary Records Of Climate-Tectonic Coupling In The Western Himalaya, Peter D. Clift Dec 2017

Cenozoic Sedimentary Records Of Climate-Tectonic Coupling In The Western Himalaya, Peter D. Clift

Faculty Publications

© 2017, The Author(s). ᅟ: Sedimentary archives in the Himalayan foreland basin and Indus submarine fan provide the most detailed records of how changing monsoon strength may have affected erosion and the development of tectonic structures in the western Himalaya during the Neogene. Muscovite Ar-Ar ages show that fast exhumation of the Greater Himalaya was earlier in the west (20–35 Ma) than in the central Himalaya (10–25 Ma), probably driven by progressive lithospheric slab tearing that caused both rock uplift and an intensified summer monsoon to start earlier in the western Himalaya. Rates of exhumation reduced after ~ 17 Ma …

Knowledge about the incorporation and role of carbon in silicate magmas is crucial for our understanding of the deep mantle processes. CO bearing silicate melting and its relevance in the upper mantle regime have been extensively explored. Here we report first-principles molecular dynamics simulations of MgSiO melt containing carbon in three distinct oxidation states - CO , CO, and C at conditions relevant for the whole mantle. Our results show that at low pressures up to 15 GPa, the carbon dioxide speciation is dominated by molecular form and carbonate ions. At higher pressures, the dominant species are silicon-polyhedral bound carbonates, …

More Than Seals And Sea Otters: Opa Causation And Moratorium Damages, Allan Kanner Dec 2017

More Than Seals And Sea Otters: Opa Causation And Moratorium Damages, Allan Kanner

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

Following the 2010 BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Federal Government issued a drilling and permitting moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico that resulted in significant economic losses for many businesses that serve the oil and gas industry. The Oil Pollution Act should have covered these economic damages; however, the Eastern District of Louisiana held otherwise. This article details how the Oil Pollution Act should have been applied to those who suffered economic loss as a result of the oil spill following the six month moratorium in the Gulf.

Minimalist Solution To Williamson County, Raymond J. Nhan Dec 2017

Minimalist Solution To Williamson County, Raymond J. Nhan

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

Williamson County Regional Planning Commission v. Hamilton Bank of Johnson County relegated Fifth Amendment takings claims to a second-class of federal rights. Before a takings plaintiff can sue in federal court, she must first seek compensation through an “adequate state procedure.” Many federal courts have held that requirement to mean a takings litigant must first seek compensation through state courts if that state provides an inverse condemnation proceeding. However, if a takings litigant sues in state court, she will be unable to sue in federal court because of issue preclusion. This effectively shuts the federal courthouse door to many property …

Evidence For Aposematic Coloration Of The Sea Urchin Astropyga Pulvinata, December 2017, Nathan Howell

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Astropyga pulvinata is a brightly colored urchin found in some tropical pacific waters including the coast of Costa Rica. The aim of this study was to test a possible explanation for the coloration of A. pulvinata. I tested the hypothesis that the coloration of A. pulvinata is aposematic. I tested this by poking A. pulvinata and another species of urchin, the uniformly black Diadema mexicanum, then comparing their reactions. The results indicated that A. pulvinata were more likely to move as a response to the poking stimulus than D. mexicanum, which was contrary to the predicted hypothesis. 100% of A. …

Growing Trichoderma Asperellum, A Natural Fungicide, On Coffee Pulp And Husks, December 2017, Amber Devries, Georgia Van Tyne

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Coffee farms often rely on chemical fungicides to control fungal crop diseases such as ojo de gallo (Mycena citricolor) and red rust (Hemileia vastatrix). Trichoderma is a genus of fungus known to parasitize other fungi and it can be used to treat these crop diseases. Research has already proved that Trichoderma spp. can be cultivated on various organic substrates. Our goal was to help coffee farmers discover which coffee waste products could grow Trichoderma asperellum best. To do this, we collected three coffee by-products from Café de Monteverde: “young” coffee pulp, “old” coffee pulp, and coffee husks. We mixed these …

Species Abundance Of Fungi Is Greater In Landslide Areas Compared To Undisturbed Areas Of The Forest In Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, December 2017, Sunshine Lopez Dec 2017

Species Abundance Of Fungi Is Greater In Landslide Areas Compared To Undisturbed Areas Of The Forest In Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, December 2017, Sunshine Lopez

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Fungi plays an important role in the ecosystem by decomposing dead plants, and other organic matter. Without this process, there would be an accumulation of organic material in the forest which would go un-decomposed. Fungi which are saprotrophic macrofungi from the phyla Basidioycota and Ascomycota have the vital job of recycling nutrients from dead plant material in the forest back into the soil. The abundance of organic material created by the landslides on the reserve behind Estación Biológica in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica may have given rise to nearly twice the amount of different species of fungi (n=31) compared to …

Zooplankton Morphospecies And Abundance In Relation With Tide In Mangroves Of Cuajiniquil, Costa Rica, December 2017, Stephanie Li

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In two decades, at least 35% of the world’s mangroves have been lost, which is more than both tropical rain forests and coral reefs (Valiela et al. 2001). Mangroves act as an important habitat and feeding grounds for fish (Sasekumar et al. 1992). Zooplankton are abundant in the mangroves and are important organisms to study to get an understanding of the foundation of ecosystem’s food chain. Zooplankton eat phytoplankton and get eaten by small fish and other sea animals, providing a food source and extending the food chain. I aimed to ask and answer the following question: is there a …

Optimized Thruster Allocation Utilizing Dual Quaternions For The Asteroid Sample Return Mission (Osiris-Rex), Asher Smith Dec 2017

Optimized Thruster Allocation Utilizing Dual Quaternions For The Asteroid Sample Return Mission (Osiris-Rex), Asher Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

As spacecraft require higher positional accuracy from the attitude control systems, new algorithm developments, along with sensor and actuator resolution and range improvements are necessary to achieve the desired science accuracies. For agile 6-Degrees of freedom (6-DOF) spacecraft with redundancy, the actuators are usually oversized or overpopulated to meet the desired slew requirements. Currently, most spacecraft utilize an over-actuated thruster system to produce 6-DOF control. This thesis presents a simulation of the OSIRIS-REx mission during the descent phase to the asteroid Bennu, with a focus on utilizing dual quaternion dynamics and a newly developed thruster allocation method. The dual quaternion …

Mechanical And Electrical Characterization Of Carbon Fiber/Bucky Paper/Zinc Oxide Hybrid Composites, Suma Ayyagari Dec 2017

Mechanical And Electrical Characterization Of Carbon Fiber/Bucky Paper/Zinc Oxide Hybrid Composites, Suma Ayyagari

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The quest for multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) expedited the use of several nano reinforcements such as zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Zinc oxide is semi-conductor with good piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. These properties could be transmitted to CFRPs when a nanophase of ZnO is embedded within CFRPs. In lieu of ZnO nanorods, Bucky paper comprising mat of multiwall-carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) could be sandwiched in-between laminae to construct a functionally graded composite with elevated electrical and thermal conductivities. In this study, a low temperature ( 90_C) hydrothermal synthesis method was utilized to grow ZnO nanorods on …

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is a congenital condition where an infant’s hip socket is either loose or otherwise unstable. DDH causes a joint instability where the femoral head is not properly situated inside the acetabulum. Etiology of the condition is in part congenital and developmental, with a difference of DDH prevalence between ethnicities. Incidence of DDH is also in some part dependent on cultural practices and activities of the mother and child. The exact nature of this cultural incidence is not clearly understood. A computational approach is hypothesized to identify the impact of babywearing position on the healthy …

Aviation Propulsive Lithium-Ion Battery Packs State-Of-Charge And State-Of-Health Estimations And Propulsive Battery System Weight Analysis, Jingsi Lilly Dec 2017

Aviation Propulsive Lithium-Ion Battery Packs State-Of-Charge And State-Of-Health Estimations And Propulsive Battery System Weight Analysis, Jingsi Lilly

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Aviation propulsive battery pack research is in high demand with the development of electric and hybrid aircraft. Accurate inflight state-of-charge and state-of-health estimations of aviation battery packs still remain challenging. This thesis puts efforts on estimating the state-of-charge, state-of-health, and remaining energy of a lithium- ion propulsive battery pack with a recursive least squares based adaptive estimator. By reading the system measurements (discharging currents and terminal voltages) with persistent excitation, the proposed estimator can determine the present internal parameters of the battery cells and further interpolate them into state-of-charge, state-of-health, and the remaining energy information. The validation results indicate that …

A Study On The Control, Dynamics, And Hardware Of Micro Aerial Biomimetic Flapping Wing Vehicles, Siara Hunt

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Biological flight encapsulates 400 million years of evolutionary ingenuity and thus is the most efficient way to fly. If an engineering pursuit is not adhering to biomimetic inspiration, then it is probably not the most efficient design. An aircraft that is inspired by bird or other biological modes of flight is called an ornithopter and is the original design of the first airplanes. Flapping wings hold much engineering promise with the potential to produce lift and thrust simultaneously. In this research, modeling and simulation of a flapping wing vehicle is generated. The purpose of this research is to develop a …

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Faculty are encouraged to use a variety of teaching/learning strategies to engage nursing students. While simulation and games are now common, there were no reports in the nursing literature using an “escape room” concept. Escape rooms use an entertainment approach as teams engage in critical thinking to solve puzzles and find clues to escape a room. In the classroom setting, this concept is modified to solve a mystery by finding various objects through a series of puzzles to locate clues. Some of these games involve finding numerical clues to open locks on a box, such as a toolbox. The …

American Gun Culture Encounters Christian Ethics: A Clash Of Narratives, Mark Ryan Dec 2017

American Gun Culture Encounters Christian Ethics: A Clash Of Narratives, Mark Ryan

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

The ethical debate about guns in America pivots around the themes of harmful consequences and individual liberty. Gun control advocates argue for greater legal control of guns on the grounds that such a policy would save lives. They envision a society ruled by an enlightened policy that seeks to minimize harm and maximize benefit for all. On the other hand, proponents of gun control shift the focus in the debate from consequences to individual liberty, which they elevate to a position of overriding value. The government’s primary aim should be to protect individual liberty rather than promote the good of …
