On Variance Balanced Designs, Dilip Kumar Ghosh, Sangeeta Ahuja
On Variance Balanced Designs, Dilip Kumar Ghosh, Sangeeta Ahuja
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Balanced incomplete block designs are not always possible to construct because of their parametric relations. In such a situation another balanced design, the variance balanced design, is required. This construction of binary, equal replicated variance balanced designs are discussed using the half fraction of the 2n factorial designs with smaller block sizes. This method was also extended to construct another variance balanced design by deleting the last block of the resulting variance balanced designs. Its efficiency factor compared with randomized block designs was compared and found to be highly efficient.
Performance Evaluation Of Confidence Intervals For Ordinal Coefficient Alpha, Heather J. Turner, Prathiba Natesan, Robin K. Henson
Performance Evaluation Of Confidence Intervals For Ordinal Coefficient Alpha, Heather J. Turner, Prathiba Natesan, Robin K. Henson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of the Fisher, Feldt, Bonner, and Hakstian and Whalen (HW) confidence intervals methods for the non-parametric reliability estimate, ordinal alpha. All methods yielded unacceptably low coverage rates and potentially increased Type-I error rates.
A Monte Carlo Study Of The Effects Of Variability And Outliers On The Linear Correlation Coefficient, Hussein Yousif Eledum
A Monte Carlo Study Of The Effects Of Variability And Outliers On The Linear Correlation Coefficient, Hussein Yousif Eledum
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the effect of two factors, the amount of variability and an outlier, on the size of the Pearson correlation coefficient. Some simulation algorithms are developed, and two theorems for increasing or decreasing the amount of variability are suggested.
Parameter Estimation In Weighted Rayleigh Distribution, M. Ajami, S. M. A. Jahanshahi
Parameter Estimation In Weighted Rayleigh Distribution, M. Ajami, S. M. A. Jahanshahi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A weighted model based on the Rayleigh distribution is proposed and the statistical and reliability properties of this model are presented. Some non-Bayesian and Bayesian methods are used to estimate the β parameter of proposed model. The Bayes estimators are obtained under the symmetric (squared error) and the asymmetric (linear exponential) loss functions using non-informative and reciprocal gamma priors. The performance of the estimators is assessed on the basis of their biases and relative risks under the two above-mentioned loss functions. A simulation study is constructed to evaluate the ability of considered estimation methods. The suitability of the proposed model …

Bayesian Hypothesis Testing Of Two Normal Samples Using Bootstrap Prior Technique, Oyebayo Ridwan Olaniran, Waheed Babatunde Yahya
Bayesian Hypothesis Testing Of Two Normal Samples Using Bootstrap Prior Technique, Oyebayo Ridwan Olaniran, Waheed Babatunde Yahya
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The most important ingredient in Bayesian analysis is prior or prior distribution. A new prior determination method was developed under the framework of parametric empirical Bayes using bootstrap technique. By way of example, Bayesian estimations of the parameters of a normal distribution with unknown mean and unknown variance conditions were considered, as well as its application in comparing the means of two independent normal samples with several scenarios. A Monte Carlo study was conducted to illustrate the proposed procedure in estimation and hypothesis testing. Results from Monte Carlo studies showed that the bootstrap prior proposed is more efficient than the …

Post-translational modification of proteins plays a significant role in the regulation of cellular processes. During the translation, process proteins undergo different modifications, which are known as post-translational modifications (PTMs). Due to their low abundances, PTM analysis presents several challenges; therefore, efficient and sensitive PTM detection methods are required. Arginine is an essential amino acid in a cell, which undergoes several kinds of PTMs. Finding these functional arginine residues in a protein is a challenging task. The task was successfully addressed, and the findings are not only reported herein, but an assessment was recently reported covering the new chemical labeling methods …

Service providers serving business customers face some unique challenges in assessing and building customer satisfaction. These challenges arise when service providers have to deal with a team or a group of people within the client’s organization. Each of these individuals, depending on their role in the service provision, go through a unique customer journey and have a distinctive service experience. Imagine yourself in a situation with several bosses with different expectations and evaluations. Not only is it challenging to meet their expectations, but it is also hard to know if they are truly satisfied with you. This dissertation explores the …
Stakeholder-Specific Reputation And Organizational Performance: Comparing The Effects Of Overall And Employer Reputation, Michael A. Kimmel
Stakeholder-Specific Reputation And Organizational Performance: Comparing The Effects Of Overall And Employer Reputation, Michael A. Kimmel
Management Dissertations - Archive
Corporate reputation scholars largely agree that reputation is an asset related to the competitive advantage of firms. However, there is far from universal agreement about whether corporate reputation is best characterized as a single, global assessment that is common to all stakeholders, or as many assessments made by different stakeholder groups. Scholars developing corporate reputation theory have recently focused on the idiosyncratic expectations of different stakeholders, and the consequences of meeting or failing to meet those expectations. This dissertation extends this analysis to employee stakeholders by drawing on social exchange and instrumental stakeholder theory frameworks to develop hypotheses around 1.) …
Success Towards Sustainable Development In Lagging Us Cities? A Grounded Study, Larry Clay Jr.
Success Towards Sustainable Development In Lagging Us Cities? A Grounded Study, Larry Clay Jr.
Student Scholarship
By 2030, it is projected that 7 out of 10 people will be urban dwellers. However, as more people migrate to cities in search of a better life and urban populations grow, housing, food, water, air, transportation, energy, and human well-being issues intensify. Issues of climate change, energy use, agricultural land and watershed protection, and transportation, among others, already stretch beyond the budget frames, municipal geography, and election cycles of most local government managers. Pressures from non-governmental organizations and society as whole are forcing the local business community as well as government officials to work together in solving some the …

Perceptions Of Macro Social Work Education: An Exploratory Study Of Educators And Practitioners, Katherine Hill, Christina L. Erickson, Linda P. Donaldson, Sondra J. Fogel, Sarah M. Ferguson
Social Work Faculty Publications
Social work graduate education is responsive to and reflective of larger environmental forces, including economic and job market trends, regulations by diverse organizations, and student interests. A national online survey of macro social work educators (n=208) and macro social work practitioners (n=383) explored their perceptions of the intersections between these forces and graduate social work education. Findings indicate that while there remains a consistent level of support for and inclusion of macro social work within MSW programs from both groups, macro practitioners identified a concurrent experience of negative perceptions, attitudes, and experiences toward macro social work education while in their …

Criminal Law, Bernadette C. Crucilla
Criminal Law, Bernadette C. Crucilla
Mercer Law Review
The adversarial nature between prosecutors and those charged with crimes makes criminal law, in particular, be in a constant state of transformation. Thus, as in prior years, this year's survey of criminal law will include only a few of the most significant cases and statutory amendments. Due to this constant evolution, it is simply not practical to attempt to make note of every single legal development. Therefore, the discussion this period has been limited to the changes that will have the widest application or interest to criminal law practitioners from June 1, 2016 through May 31, 2017.

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Maren R. Cave, Stephen M. Schatz
Mercer Law Review
During this survey period, the Georgia state and federal courts decided questions of first impression related to uninsured motorist (UM) coverage holding that, although umbrella policies are no longer required to provide UM coverage, the statutory notice requirements must be strictly followed before such coverage can be dropped in a renewal and that the "vertical exhaustion requirements" contained in excess policies do not violate the UM statute. Another first impression decision involved the correct interpretation of the statute providing for pre-suit offers in motor vehicle injury cases and whether timely payment may be a condition of acceptance. Other cases decided …

Zoning And Land Use Law, Newton M. Galloway, Steven L. Jones
Zoning And Land Use Law, Newton M. Galloway, Steven L. Jones
Mercer Law Review
This year and volume, the sixty-ninth, mark the phoenix flight of the Zoning and Land Use Law survey. The survey last appeared in the sixty-first volume of the Mercer Law Review, just as the Great Recession was taking its toll on real estate development. The Great Recession shifted development activity away from constructing new buildings to protecting the value of investment in existing structures from the ravages of the landslide of foreclosures. At the height of the Great Recession, there was virtually no demand for new residential or commercial construction, and new construction and development ground to a halt. …

Blood Pressure Responses To Dietary Sodium Association With Autonomic Cardiovascular Function In Normotensive Adults, Evan Matthews, Michael S. Brian, David G. Edwards, Sean D. Stocker, Megan M. Wenner, William B. Farquhar
Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works
Blood pressure responses to dietary sodium vary widely person-to-person. Salt sensitive rodent models display altered autonomic function, a trait thought to contribute to poor cardiovascular health. Thus, we hypothesized that increased salt sensitivity (SS) in normotensive humans would be associated with increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), decreased high frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), and decreased baroreflex sensitivity. Healthy normotensive men and women completed 1 week of high (300 mmol·day− 1) and 1 week of low (20 mmol·day− 1) dietary sodium (random order) with 24 h mean arterial pressure (MAP) assessed on the last day of each diet to assess …

An Innovative Fuzzy Backstepping Sliding Mode Controller For A Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Shiqian Wang, Jingjuan Zhang, Qian Zhang, Chaoying Pei
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The dynamical model of a Tri-Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is presented in this paper. The Tri-Rotor has three rotors with two fixed-pitch propellers and a tiltable propeller to control the yaw displacement. The model is obtained via the Newton–Euler approach and a nonlinear control strategy called fuzzy backstepping sliding mode control is proposed for the attitude stabilization and altitude tracking of the vehicle. The designed controller consists of a backstepping sliding mode controller and a fuzzy logic controller. For the problem of determining the backstepping sliding mode control coefficients, an optimization method of gradient descent algorithm has been used. …
Horticulture For Pollinator Conservation, Carter M. Westerhold
Horticulture For Pollinator Conservation, Carter M. Westerhold
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pollinators worldwide are declining. Consequently, the agricultural and ecological services these insects provide are in danger of being lost. Land use intensification, via urbanization, has greatly influenced this decline in pollinators. Luckily, through targeted horticultural practices, stable populations of pollinators can be sustained within urban areas. The horticultural practices of planting diverse floral resources and managing pollinator habitat in urban areas can sustain these populations. Two studies were conducted with the intent to identify horticultural knowledge gaps that could be reduced to aid in pollinator conservation efforts. First, a study to compare Nebraska native and non-native ornamental plants was conducted. …
Let Them Eat Lunch: The Impact Of Universal Free Meals On Student Performance, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Michah W. Rothbart
Let Them Eat Lunch: The Impact Of Universal Free Meals On Student Performance, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Michah W. Rothbart
Center for Policy Research
This paper investigates the impact of extending free school lunch to all students, regardless of income, on academic performance in New York City middle schools. Using a difference-in-difference design and unique longitudinal, student level data, we derive credibly causal estimates of the impacts of “Universal Free Meals” (UFM) on test scores in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics, and participation in school lunch. We find UFM increases academic performance by as much as 0.059 standard deviations in math and 0.083 in ELA for non-poor students, with smaller, statistically significant effects of 0.032 and 0.027 standard deviations in math and ELA …
