The Use Of Culturally Sensitive Education On Organ Donation And Its Impact On Attitudes And Willingness To Donate Organs, James Winters Dec 2017

The Use Of Culturally Sensitive Education On Organ Donation And Its Impact On Attitudes And Willingness To Donate Organs, James Winters

Doctoral Projects

In regards to transplantation, ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by the donor shortage. The high morbidity rates and decreased willingness to donate commonplace among these demographics has created a devastating imbalance. Increasing minority donor presence will make the allocation process more favorable for minority candidates. The current study entailed the provision of a culturally sensitive educational intervention to sixty-five (n=65) students at the University of Southern Mississippi. Surveys were administered pre/post intervention to assess knowledge and attitudes towards donation. Pre-intervention data reflected findings from prior research, post-intervention data showed that the intervention was able to mitigate these findings and that …

Spatial Analysis Of Ethnic And Racial Segregation In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, 2000–2014, Roy Yao Dec 2017

Spatial Analysis Of Ethnic And Racial Segregation In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, 2000–2014, Roy Yao

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Racial segregation has long been a great concern in the United States. Scholars study and measure racial segregation over different time periods to trace the changing patterns of racial segregation. Chicago, as the nation’s third largest city, also ranked on top of the most segregated cities. Previous studies measured racial segregation in Chicago only numerically; few studies have used geospatial statistic methods to identify racial segregation patterns in the Chicago metropolitan area. This study uses “Hotspot Analysis” (Getis Ord Gi*) to identify Chicago’s most recent segregation patterns among four major ethnic and racial groups: White, African American, Hispanic and Asian. …

Strategic Culture In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Divergent Paths Of Uganda And Tanzania, Kevin Frank Dec 2017

Strategic Culture In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Divergent Paths Of Uganda And Tanzania, Kevin Frank

Dissertations

Strategic culture is a concept accepted by scholars and practitioners, but with problematic applicability to states newly independent or emerging from conflict. The elements that comprise strategic culture in the developed world are not always present in emerging states. This research addresses the pertinency of strategic culture in Uganda and Tanzania, and then tests the operationalization of the concept using the case of participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The African Union and the international community expected Uganda and Tanzania to contribute troops to AMISON in 2007. In the event, Uganda did and Tanzania chose another path. …

Making The Most Of Cooperative Federalism: What The Clean Power Plan Has Already Achieved, Gabriel Pacyniak Dec 2017

Making The Most Of Cooperative Federalism: What The Clean Power Plan Has Already Achieved, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

The fate of the EPA's Clean Power Plan-the signature Obama Administration action to reduce greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions from existing power plants under the Clean Air Act-is uncertain at best given pending litigation and the opposition of President Donald Trump. Despite this uncertainty, the development of the Clean Power Plan provides an important case study of how rulemaking under a cooperative federalism statutory structure can prompt broad, beneficial policy engagement by states and stakeholders, even in a contentious regulatory action. In the development of the Clean Power Plan, active state and stakeholder engagement and an iterative process of "trying on" …

Understanding Parents’ Attitudes Towards Complexity In Children's Books, Dorit Aram, Deborah Bergman Deitcher, Gali Adar Dec 2017

Understanding Parents’ Attitudes Towards Complexity In Children's Books, Dorit Aram, Deborah Bergman Deitcher, Gali Adar

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Experts in children's literature and child development value complexity in the language, socio-emotional content, and structure of books, yet little is known regarding parents’ attitudes towards these aspects. The study thus examined how parents’ gender, education, and profession, children's age and gender, and frequency of parent-child reading interactions predict parents’ support for complexity in children’s books. Participants were 104 parents to children aged 4-7. Parents completed questionnaires measuring frequency of shared book reading and levels of support for complexity of children’s narrative books in three areas: language, socio-emotional content, and structure. Results showed that parents supported complexity of socio-emotional content, …

Fostering Effective And Engaging Literature Discussions, Kayla Lewis Dec 2017

Fostering Effective And Engaging Literature Discussions, Kayla Lewis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Literature discussion groups are a widely used practice in many classrooms. Creating literature discussions that are both effective and engaging can be a rewarding experience for both the students and the teacher. As a part of a larger study examining the scaffolding that took place during literature discussions, this article focuses on the strengths of three teachers implementing literature discussion groups within their fifth grade classrooms. Through an analysis of these teachers’ strengths, a scale was developed to help other teachers as they reflect on their own literature discussions.

Teachers’ Experiences Providing One-On-One Instruction To Struggling Readers, Meghan D. Liebfreund, Steven J. Amendum

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined the experiences of 12 kindergarten, first-, and second-grade classroom teachers who provided one-on-one intervention instruction for struggling readers within the general classroom context. Teachers were interviewed at the end of the project. Interview statements clustered into four themes: Managing One-on-One Intervention, Observing Student Growth, Acquiring Knowledge about Teaching Reading, and Discovering Specific Characteristics of Good Teaching. Results indicated that positioning the classroom teacher at the center of a reading intervention with support may be a beneficial form of professional development. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Multilevel Modeling Of Single-Case Data: An Introduction And Tutorial For The Applied Researcher, Emily Rodabaugh, Mariola Moeyaert Dec 2017

Multilevel Modeling Of Single-Case Data: An Introduction And Tutorial For The Applied Researcher, Emily Rodabaugh, Mariola Moeyaert

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Two- and three-level hierarchical linear modeling is introduced and demonstrated as a meta-analysis technique to estimate treatment effects across cases and studies. Multilevel modeling techniques have been empirically validated and are promising (Moeyaert, Ugille, Ferron, Beretvas, & Van den Noortgate, 2013a, 2013b). However, detailed instruction is needed to bridge the gap between methodologists and applied researchers. An empirical illustration estimating the effectiveness of choice-making interventions on decreasing students with special needs’ problem behaviors is discussed. Step-by-step formulations of equations and R code for applied researchers are provided in order for researchers to conduct multilevel analyses using their own SCED data.

Can Brief, Evidence-Based Measures Be Effective Rti Screens In Urban Schools? A Preliminary Study, Cheryl C. Durwin, Dina Moore, Deborah A. Carroll Dec 2017

Can Brief, Evidence-Based Measures Be Effective Rti Screens In Urban Schools? A Preliminary Study, Cheryl C. Durwin, Dina Moore, Deborah A. Carroll

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Inefficient response-to-intervention (RTI) screening in urban schools where many students read below grade-level may under-identify students needing intervention or over-identify students, over-burdening a limited-resource system. In a first-grade sample from one urban school, we evaluated the classification validity of two research-based screening measures—the Test of Silent Reading Efficiency and Comprehension and the Word Test-3 (WT3) Synonym subtest—as alternatives to the school’s screening measure, the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). The WT3 yielded high classification accuracy in identifying students who were receiving intervention services, and it outperformed the BAS. Practical implications for RTI screening are discussed.

Students considered the same ethical dilemma for each digital or non-digital condition, then made a decision.

Cognitive Complexity Through Collaboration In Argumentative Student Blogs, Maria Pesce Stasaitis, Patricia Irene Mulcahy-Ernt Dec 2017

Cognitive Complexity Through Collaboration In Argumentative Student Blogs, Maria Pesce Stasaitis, Patricia Irene Mulcahy-Ernt

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

In order to investigate instructional planning strategies that impact student improvement in argumentative writing the teacher-as-researcher implemented an Integrated Writing intervention (MacArthur, Graham, & Schwartz, 1993) in a seventh grade urban school classroom. Utilizing a mixed methods action research study the teacher-researcher collected both qualitative and quantitative data during two four-week instructional units that involved status checking, mini-lessons, student writing, peer and teacher conferences, and group sharing of published student writing. Two iterations of data were analyzed for the inclusion of argumentative elements in the students’ writing, and data samples were coded for cognitive complexity through analysis of their levels …

Development And Validation Of An Instrument To Measure Attitude Of Undergraduate Students Towards Statistics, Debrishi Bose

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Owing to the recent increase in the number of Statistics classes across colleges, there has been a rise in fear for Statistics or Statistics' Anxiety among students, as a result of which attitude of students towards Statistics has received considerable attention from researchers. All the existing Instruments have overlooked the impact of Environmental Influence towards learning Statistics, which motivated the development of Attitude towards Statistics Instrument. An analysis of 107 responses (mostly female) revealed the hypothesized 4 factor structure of the Instrument.

Effect Of Small Sample Size On Parameter Estimation In A Three-Level Organizational Framework: A Simulation Study Using M-Plus, Debrishi Bose Dec 2017

Effect Of Small Sample Size On Parameter Estimation In A Three-Level Organizational Framework: A Simulation Study Using M-Plus, Debrishi Bose

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

The use of Multilevel Modeling has become extremely popular in Social Science research owing to the natural hierarchy which often exists in the dataset. As has been pointed out by most researchers, number of units (sample size) at upper levels of hierarchy becomes extremely crucial. The current study employs a Random-Intercept model (using M-Plus) to study the effect of level-3 sample size on parameter estimation in a three level organizational framework. Number of sampling units at the third level was varied to check the impact on fixed effects, variance components, and their associated standard errors.

Creating And Piloting An Instrument To Measure The Relationship Between Parenting Style And College Student Grit, Kelly Dunn Dec 2017

Creating And Piloting An Instrument To Measure The Relationship Between Parenting Style And College Student Grit, Kelly Dunn

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Parents are extremely involved in the lives of their college students. Research has explored how parenting style affects college student success such as academic achievement, transition, and wellness. Grit, defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals, has been linked to college student success; however, little research investigates the relationship between parenting style and college student grit. This paper details the creation of an instrument that measured the relationship between parenting style and grit. Early results of the instrument demonstrated significant relationships between certain parenting styles and grit.
