Let’S Talk: Training Anxiety Out Of New Tutors, Nichelle Pomeroy
Tutor's Column
This paper focuses on the author’s experience becoming a new tutor at Utah State University’s Writing Center. The author gives suggestions on what can be done to ease anxiety in new tutors during their first few sessions. Additional training is suggested with collaborative efforts between new and experienced tutors along with familiarization with logistical aspects.

In a standard tutoring session, positive reinforcement in commonly used to bolster a student’s confidence, as well as point out good aspects of the writing. This paper explores the use of Behavioral Skills Training (BST) in tutoring, an Applied Behavioral Analysis procedure in which instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback are used to teach proficiency in a skill. This paper examines the benefits of using BST in difficult sessions where standard protocol would be of little value to the student’s writing ability. Behavioral skills training is an intuitive and simple procedure, but proves to be an effective way to structure a …

Reading Hospital Interventional Radiology
BACKGROUND: The post-thrombotic syndrome frequently develops in patients with proximal deep-vein thrombosis despite treatment with anticoagulant therapy. Pharmacomechanical catheter-directed thrombolysis (hereafter "pharmacomechanical thrombolysis") rapidly removes thrombus and is hypothesized to reduce the risk of the post-thrombotic syndrome.
METHODS: We randomly assigned 692 patients with acute proximal deep-vein thrombosis to receive either anticoagulation alone (control group) or anticoagulation plus pharmacomechanical thrombolysis (catheter-mediated or device-mediated intrathrombus delivery of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and thrombus aspiration or maceration, with or without stenting). The primary outcome was development of the post-thrombotic syndrome between 6 and 24 months of follow-up.
RESULTS: Between 6 and 24 …

Honors Capstones
This thesis features ten creative works, depicting a nonfictional account of life with various disabilities. Six of these are creative nonfiction prose stories, and four of them are Tordsen 4 poems. By writing these stories and poems, I write for consolation and to console those who harbor their traumas within themselves. I follow the stories of my own life, starting and ending chronologically, with the poems that follow each theme working as a retrospective reflection.
The first prose story begins during the middle of high school with the theme following through the stories until the end of college, or currently. …

We present X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on the iron L-edge of 0.5 mM aqueous ferricyanide. These measurements demonstrate the ability of high-throughput transition-edge-sensor (TES) spectrometers to access the rich soft X-ray (100–2000 eV) spectroscopy regime for dilute and radiation-sensitive samples. Our low-concentration data are in agreement with high-concentration measurements recorded by grating spectrometers. These results show that soft-X-ray RIXS spectroscopy acquired by high-throughput TES spectrometers can be used to study the local electronic structure of dilute metal-centered complexes relevant to biology, chemistry, and catalysis. In particular, TES spectrometers have a unique ability to characterize …

The Retainer-Based Model Of Financial Planning, Savannah Stone
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Through attending my classes and working part-time at a financial planning firm, I have learned about many different types of compensation for financial planners, the most common being commissions and fees. Western Kentucky University allowed me to travel to San Diego in January of 2017 to attend the TD Ameritrade LINC 2017 conference, and it was there that I was introduced to the concept of a monthly retainer model of compensation. This grabbed my attention because it was a relatively new and unusual form of payment for financial planning services. Through curiosity, this topic encouraged my study of the past, …

ENGR 333
Previously, Calvin College had a cogeneration system with the purpose of generating electricity and heat, through the combustion of natural gas, for Calvin’s campus. The original co-gen system was removed in 2017 due to high costs associated with maintenance and operations. Without a co-gen system, Calvin College is fully dependent on the grid. To save money and help in the President’s Carbon Commitment, PCC, the mechanical engineering students of ENGR 333 (section B) propose the implementation of a new co-gen system.

As water researchers, we challenge ourselves to see water-related issues from a fresh perspective in our quest to find new and better solutions. Often this means either taking a much closer look or backing off to view things in a broader frame of reference. In this issue, we look at projects on both ends of the spectrum, from the microscopic to the regional.

Wearing The Collaborator Hat, Jessica Hahn
Tutor's Column
Writing tutors take on several roles when working with students, which range from coaches to counselors. However, one of the most important roles of writing tutors is the collaborator. Collaboration encourages both the tutor and the student to draw on each of their strengths, rather than only relying on the knowledge of the tutor alone. Some roles that restrict tutors as collaborators are roles such as editors and experts. Tutors avoid being editors of papers because they are only able to address surface level issues in writing rather than global issues. Being an expert is too much of a burden …
Tutors—Writing Myth Busters, Stephanie Pointer
Tutors—Writing Myth Busters, Stephanie Pointer
Tutor's Column
The purpose of this essay is to help tutors understand that myths about the writing process are hurting students and their writing. Peer tutors are in a unique position to teach students the truth about the writing process. Many students feel incapable of writing well because they struggle with the writing process. Helping students recognize false beliefs about writing and understand the truth will do more to improve student writing and confidence than teaching writing mechanics. When students have a deeper understanding of the importance of having a focused audience, writing bad drafts, and allowing for their limited time frame, …

Tutors: “Theses” The Problem: Students And Thesis Statements, Jackson Bylund
Tutor's Column
Although it is a common element of academic writing, the thesis statement is woefully misunderstood and misused by many new college students. The Writing Center staff spends too much time reexplaining this principle and helping visiting students construct a solid thesis; time that could be better spent on other key aspects of their essays, like content and organization. This essay strives to explain what a thesis statement is, how it is crafted, how and why students have such a poor understanding of the concept, and what can be done to fix this obnoxious issue.

Myeloid-biased hematopoietic stem cells (MB-HSCs) play critical roles in recovery from injury, but little is known about how they are regulated within the bone marrow niche. Here we describe an auto-/paracrine physiologic circuit that controls quiescence of MB-HSCs and hematopoietic progenitors marked by histidine decarboxylase (Hdc). Committed Hdc+ myeloid cells lie in close anatomical proximity to MB-HSCs and produce histamine, which activates the H2 receptor on MB-HSCs to promote their quiescence and self-renewal. Depleting histamine-producing cells enforces cell cycle entry, induces loss of serial transplant capacity, and sensitizes animals to chemotherapeutic injury. Increasing demand for myeloid cells via lipopolysaccharide (LPS) …
