Quantum Dragon Solutions For Electron Transport Through Single-Layer Planar Rectangular, Godfred Inkoom
Quantum Dragon Solutions For Electron Transport Through Single-Layer Planar Rectangular, Godfred Inkoom
Theses and Dissertations
When a nanostructure is coupled between two leads, the electron transmission probability as a function of energy, E, is used in the Landauer formula to obtain the electrical conductance of the nanodevice. The electron transmission probability as a function of energy, T (E), is calculated from the appropriate solution of the time independent Schrödinger equation. Recently, a large class of nanostructures called quantum dragons has been discovered. Quantum dragons are nanodevices with correlated disorder but still can have electron transmission probability unity for all energies when connected to appropriate (idealized) leads. Hence for a single channel setup, the electrical conductivity …
Race, Drugs, And Sentencing: A Quantitative Analysis Of Sentencing Outcomes For Federal Cocaine And Methamphetamine Drug Offenses, Makeela Johari Wells
Race, Drugs, And Sentencing: A Quantitative Analysis Of Sentencing Outcomes For Federal Cocaine And Methamphetamine Drug Offenses, Makeela Johari Wells
Theses and Dissertations
For decades, the United States has fought a “War on Drugs” with no success. This war has led to substantial increases in the number of individuals incarcerated in the United States prison system. The following dissertation investigates the impact of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 (FSA 2010) on sentencing decisions for crack and powder cocaine offenders sentenced in the federal system. The FSA 2010 is a federal policy that reduced the crack-to-powder cocaine quantity from 100-to1 to 18-to-1 in an effort to reduce racial/ethnic disparity in sentencing associated with harsh penalties. Specifically, I examined federal crack cocaine and powder …

Impacts Of Immigration Policy Changes On Employment Of Foreign Born Doctorate Recipients, Jun Cheng
Impacts Of Immigration Policy Changes On Employment Of Foreign Born Doctorate Recipients, Jun Cheng
Theses and Dissertations
The H-1B visa program was initiated in 1990 to temporarily hire highly-skilled foreign workers. The H-1B visa program has changed several times since its initiation. One of the most important changes occurred in 2001 when the 21st Century Act exempted individuals employed by institutions of higher education and nonprofit and government research organizations from the H-1B visa cap increasing the number of visas available for foreign high-skilled immigrants. To analyze the impact of policy changes affecting the H-1B program on highly-skilled workers, we study the behavior of foreign-born Ph.D. students who graduated from institutions in the United States over the …

In Vitro And In Vivo Effects Of An Encapsulated Butyric Acid And A Lactic Acid Producing Bacteria Used Alone Or In Combination, Dana Kristen Dittoe
Theses and Dissertations
Lactic acid producing bacteria (LAB) and organic acids have been proposed as effective alternatives to antibiotics, however there is limited literature concerning their combination. Thus, the objective of this thesis was to investigate the effects of LAB, encapsulated butyric acid (EBA), and their combination. Under challenged conditions, the in vitro study demonstrated that both EBA and LAB were capable of reducing pathogen proliferation over time, with greater efficacy at lower initial concentration. However, EBA demonstrated a greater effectiveness on pathogen reduction. Under challenged conditions, the results of the in vivo study indicated that birds fed LAB performed comparatively to that …

The Application And Exploration Of The City Biodiversity Index Through A Case Study Of The City Of Starkville, Mississippi, Leslie Rhea Moma
Theses and Dissertations
During the 21st century, more people will reside in cities than in rural areas for the first time in human history. As cities expand to accommodate their growing population, pressure is mounting on local biodiversity and the ecosystems they support. This prompted the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity - in collaboration with the City of Singapore - to develop a biodiversity index specifically for cities. In 2014, the final draft of the City Biodiversity Index was released. Twenty-three indicators comprise three categories that assess: native biodiversity, ecosystem services, and municipal support for local biodiversity. A case-study was designed for Starkville, …

Time Frame For Transitive And Reciprocal Inferences, Ross Allen Mccool
Time Frame For Transitive And Reciprocal Inferences, Ross Allen Mccool
Theses and Dissertations
In language, information is omitted for brevity. Comprehension requires inferences to be made, but do we make such inferences during encoding or later? Kintsch (1988) claimed that transitive inferences are made during reading and proposed transitive inferences are extracted from a constructed mental image. Two experiments were performed to test his ideas. Participants read sentences permitting a transitive or reciprocal inference, then immediately answered an inference based question. Data included reaction time and accuracy. By comparing verification against inferential sentences, it is possible to determine if the inference is made during encoding or later. A further manipulation was to compare …
Toward A Molecular Mechanism Of Phase Separation In Disordered Elastin-Like Proteins, Yue Zhang
Toward A Molecular Mechanism Of Phase Separation In Disordered Elastin-Like Proteins, Yue Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Since the last decade, an increasing number of proteins have been shown to be capable of undergoing reversible liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in response to an external stimulus, and the resulting protein-rich phase (coacervate) is considered as one of the main components of membrane-less organelles. Most of these proteins are intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) or contain intrinsically disordered regions. More importantly, LLPS often plays an important role in cellular signaling and development of cells and tissues. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying LLPS of proteins remain poorly understood. Elastin-like proteins (ELPs), a class of IDPs derived from the hydrophobic domains of …
Transcriptome-Wide Prevalence Of Selection Among Wild Populations Of Helianthus Annuus (Common Sunflower), Michael Emmett Kartje
Transcriptome-Wide Prevalence Of Selection Among Wild Populations Of Helianthus Annuus (Common Sunflower), Michael Emmett Kartje
Theses and Dissertations
In the present study, I used transcriptomic data to elucidate the role of selection in maintaining genetic cohesion and promoting divergence among wild populations of the annual sunflower Helianthus annuus. I observed that nearly half of the loci displaying high levels of population structure (44%) show allele frequency spectrum skew consistent with recent exposure to natural selection. Among transcriptomic regions at which allele frequency divergence is lowest, fewer loci maintain strong signals of selection (34%). Additionally, I find evidence supporting the maintenance of evolutionarily complex haplotype structure within populations at loci showing high levels of among-population allele frequency divergence.
Use Of Formative Research To Develop A Healthy Eating Social Marketing Campaign For Low Resource Families In Mississippi, Rahel Mathews
Use Of Formative Research To Develop A Healthy Eating Social Marketing Campaign For Low Resource Families In Mississippi, Rahel Mathews
Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi leads the nation in chronic disease, obesity, poverty, and food insecurity. Preventing further growth in disease rates, requires a cultural shift towards a ‘healthy eating’ environment. Healthy patterns of food consumption along with physical activity can prevent and reduce these rates. A state-wide ‘healthy eating’ social marketing campaign could motivate voluntary population behavioral change. Three different methodologies were used to develop a strategy for Mississippi: a systematic review of the literature, a state-wide phone survey (quantitative), and focus groups (qualitative). A systematic review of articles published since January 2007 was conducted, using PRISMA guidelines. Five databases were searched with …

Using Deuterium And Oxygen-18 Stable Isotopes To Understand Mechanisms Of Stemflow Generation As A Function Of Tree Species And Climate, Mercedes Siegle-Gaither
Theses and Dissertations
Stemflow creates biogeochemical hotspots at tree bases. Few studies examine bark structure effects on stemflow generation via stable isotopes. Stemflow volume and isotopic composition (δD, δ18O) were measured over 15 months to address three main objectives: to determine origins and pathways of stemflow, to identify differences in stemflow generation mechanisms between tree species, and to identify differences in stemflow generation mechanisms between meteorological events. Laser ablation spectroscopy showed that, compared to throughfall and precipitation, stemflow was isotopically enriched, signifying isotopic fractionation. A bark-wetting experiment showed bark water storage capacity to be greatest in species with thick, continuous bark. Isotopic composition …

Fracture Study On 2014-T6 (Lt) Aluminum Alloy Sheet Using Critical-Crack-Tip-Opening Angle Criterion, Sara Himmiche
Theses and Dissertations
A two-parameter fracture criterion (TPFC), relates the linear-elastic stress intensity factor KIe and net-section stress Sn at failure with two-material parameters, KF and m. The objective of this work was to validate the TPFC. Two-dimensional elastic-plastic finite-element analyses (FEA) were used with the critical crack-tip-opening-angle fracture criterion and a plane-strain-core height to match failure loads on middle-crack-tension, M(T), specimens made of 2014-T6 (LT) aluminum alloy. The same analyses were used on single-edge-crack-tension, SE(T), and-single-edge-crack-bend, SE(B), specimens. A wide range in specimen widths (w = 0.75 to 24 in.) were considered. The finite-element code, ZIP2D, was used to calculate critical stress-intensity …
Listeria Monocytogenes Response To Sublethal Sodium Hypochlorite Induced Oxidative Stress On Its Biofilm Forming Ability And Antibiotic Resistance, Mohit Bansal
Theses and Dissertations
Listeria monocytogenes response to oxidative stress by sublethal sodium hypochlorite was investigated in this study. Continuous exposure of sublethal chlorine influenced biofilm formation and stress adaptation (homologous and heterologous) in L. monocytogenes. The biofilm forming ability of oxidative stress adapted and control cells were investigated on polystyrene surface at 22°C and 37°C. The oxidative stress adapted cells were found to form less biofilm in the presence of chlorine (p < 0.10) when compared to non-treated control cells at both the temperatures. In addition, the biofilm forming ability of L. monocytogenes was reduced significantly at higher sublethal chlorine concentrations (p < 0.10). In conclusion, oxidative stress adapted L. monocytogenes has developed tolerance to chlorine and some of the antibiotics. However, oxidative stress those cells did demonstrate an antibiofilm effect. This demonstrates that oxidative stress reduces L. monocytogenes biofilm formation but can also increase antibiotic resistance.
Long-Term Effects Of Post-Fire Forest Structure On Understory Vegetation In Larch Forests Of The Siberian Arctic, Homero Pena
Long-Term Effects Of Post-Fire Forest Structure On Understory Vegetation In Larch Forests Of The Siberian Arctic, Homero Pena
Theses and Dissertations
Climate warming is increasing fire severity in boreal forests and can alter forest structure and carbon (C) dynamics in Cajander larch (Larix cajanderi) forests of Siberia, which occur over C and ice-rich yedoma permafrost. Altered forest structure may impact understory vegetation through changing canopy cover, permafrost thaw depth, and soil temperatures. The primary objective of this study was to assess the long-term impacts of fire-driven changes in tree density on understory composition, diversity, and C pools and the underlying soil organic layer (SOL). Shrubs dominated low density stands, likely from reduced canopy cover and thaw depth, while mosses dominated high …
Management Practices For Corn Producers Implementing Early Planting As A Production Strategy, Matthew W. Hock
Management Practices For Corn Producers Implementing Early Planting As A Production Strategy, Matthew W. Hock
Theses and Dissertations
Producers choosing to implement an early corn planting management strategy often experience several yield limiting biotic and abiotic factors. Field variability, flooding, sub-optimal soil temperatures which leads to poor nutrient uptake, delayed emergence and reduced root growth can limit grain production. Three separate experiments were conducted to address some of the negative effects associated with early corn planting. Experiment 1 evaluated flooding effects on several morpho-physiological traits including root system architecture during early crop development. Hybrids (DKC 6208, Pioneer 1197) were flooded at planting (V0) and growth stages V1, V2, V3 for 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96 hours. Plants …
Understanding Molecular Mechanisms Of Host-Edwardsiella Ictaluri Interaction, Nawar Hadi Al-Janabi
Understanding Molecular Mechanisms Of Host-Edwardsiella Ictaluri Interaction, Nawar Hadi Al-Janabi
Theses and Dissertations
Catfish, the "king" of the U.S. aquaculture, is threatened by a severe, systemic bacterial disease known as enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC). This disease causes high mortality and massive economic losses in cultured channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in the United States. E. ictaluri penetrates catfish intestinal epithelia quickly and establishes a systemic infection rapidly. However, our knowledge on catfish intestine and E. ictaluri interaction is very limited. In Particular, catfish intestinal immune responses and virulence genes needed by E. ictaluri to evade host defenses are not well understood. Hence, our long-term goal is to identify the molecular mechanisms of E. …
Classroom Responsibility In Transitioning Teachers: What Drives It When Self-Efficacy Is Lacking?, Shameeka Renee Deanes
Classroom Responsibility In Transitioning Teachers: What Drives It When Self-Efficacy Is Lacking?, Shameeka Renee Deanes
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has linked self-efficacy to classroom responsibility noting that teachers take on more classroom responsibility when they have confidence in themselves and their abilities. However, the gap to be addressed is with transitioning teachers who transitioned from other careers and those who entered alternate route programs. Previous research has found that these teachers lack self-efficacy because of lack of preparation and classroom experience, yet they still must take on the responsibilities of the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the internal factors that drive classroom responsibility for transitioning teachers who have low self-efficacy. In addition …
The Effects Of Cover Crops And Tillage Method On Sweetpotato [Ipomoea Batatas (L.) Lam.] In North Mississippi., Jeffrey Len Main
The Effects Of Cover Crops And Tillage Method On Sweetpotato [Ipomoea Batatas (L.) Lam.] In North Mississippi., Jeffrey Len Main
Theses and Dissertations
Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is a major food resource of much of the world. Sweetpotato production is damaging to the soils in which it is grown due to the nature of production and the condition the soil is left to overwinter. There is potential for future regulation on the production of sweetpotato as related to runoff and nonpoint source pollution as the sediment from runoff erosion is easy to pinpoint in nearby waterways. Two studies were carried out to determine the effect of a reduced tillage practice and cover crops on the accumulation of nutrients in cover crops and …
