Investigating How Anticipation Of Object States Drives Event Comprehension, Kyra Krass Dec 2017

Investigating How Anticipation Of Object States Drives Event Comprehension, Kyra Krass

Master's Theses

Previous literature has suggested that, when given change of state events in a visual world paradigm task, individuals anticipate either the object that can be acted upon or the goal. This study investigated under what circumstances an individual anticipates one over the other. We used reversible action verbs (e.g. open/close), destruction verbs (e.g., eat), and creation verbs (e.g., knit) in the past and future tense to investigate how anticipation differs across these conditions. Individuals heard sentences such as "The woman will open the umbrella" while seeing four objects on a screen: the initial state (e.g., a closed umbrella), the end …

Do You Still Love Me? A Meta-Analysis Of Perceived Social Support For People Who Are Hiv-Positive, Yesenia J. Gutierrez Dec 2017

Do You Still Love Me? A Meta-Analysis Of Perceived Social Support For People Who Are Hiv-Positive, Yesenia J. Gutierrez

Open Access Theses

The current study examined the perceived social support of people who are HIV positive. The study compared whether perceived social support differed by the source of social support (i.e., family [mother, father, sibling], friend, and significant others). A total 46 effect sizes extracted from nine primary studies (i.e., 8 published manuscripts and 1 unpublished dissertation) were used in the current meta-analysis. The primary effect size was the odds ratio (OR), which quantified the difference in the odds of perceived social support level between two sources of social support. Studies reporting sufficient information computing Cohen’s d or Correlation Coefficient were converted …

Moving Myths: A Heuristic Inquiry Into The Role Of Jungian Concepts In The Theoretical Framework Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Student, Maura Reagan

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this heuristic study was to develop a personal dance/movement therapy approach and interventions that utilize the Jungian concepts of myth and archetypes. The researcher, a 24-year-old graduate student, is grounded in a humanistic-existential therapy approach and is interested in bringing additional symbolism and metaphor to my theoretical lens by examining how these specific elements of Carl Jung’s psychoanalytic theory can enhance my current framework. Data collection and analysis took place over five Authentic Movement Skype sessions with the researcher and research collaborator participating from private rooms in their respective homes in Chicago, IL and Seattle, WA. The …

Speech Codes Theory, Tabitha Hart Dec 2017

Speech Codes Theory, Tabitha Hart

Faculty Publications

Rooted in the ethnography of communication and based on empirical research, speech codes theory is a theoretical/methodological tool for studying situated communication practices. Two important applications of speech codes theory are to reveal local cultures and to examine the ways in which people make use of communication to accomplish important goals pertaining to communal life. Speech codes theory offers researchers a systematic approach to describing, interpreting, analyzing, and comparing local communicative practices and the cultures which they instantiate.

The War On Science Grows Deeper, Aldemaro Romero Jr. Dec 2017

The War On Science Grows Deeper, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

In 2005, journalist Chris Mooney pub- lished a book titled “The Republican War on Science,” which documented the persistent tendency among many conservatives to reject any science that runs contrary to their ideological principles, whether it is climate science, evolutionary biology, or health-related findings that challenge industry interests.

Since then, things have gone worse in cases that remind us of the evilest experiences from recent authoritarian regimes.

The Behavioural Response Of Migrating Humpback Whales To A Full Seismic Airgun Array, Rebecca A. Dunlop, Michael J. Noad, Robert D. Mccauley, Eric Kniest, Robert Slade, David Paton, Douglas H. Cato

Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection

Despite concerns on the effects of noise from seismic survey airguns on marine organisms, there remains uncertainty as to the biological significance of any response. This study quantifies and interprets the response of migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) to a 3130 in3 (51.3l) commercial airgun array. We compare the behavioural responses to active trials (array operational; n = 34 whale groups), with responses to control trials (source vessel towing the array while silent; n = 33) and baseline studies of normal behaviour in the absence of the vessel (n = 85). No abnormal behaviours were recorded …

Fifa: Exploring A Focally Induced Fault Attack Strategy In Near-Threshold Computing, Prabal Basu, Chidhambaranathan Rajamanikkam, Aatreyi Bal, Pramesh Pandey, Trevor Carter, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this letter, we explore the emerging security threats of near-threshold computing (NTC). Researchers have shown that the delay sensitivity of a circuit to supply voltage variation tremendously increases, as the circuit's operating conditions shift from traditional super-threshold values to NTC values. As a result, NTC systems become extremely vulnerable to timing fault attacks, jeopardizing trustworthy computing. Inspired by the operation of a polymorphic virus, we propose a novel threat model for NTC, referred to as a focally induced fault attack (FIFA). FIFA employs a machine learning framework to ascertain the circuit vulnerabilities and generates targeted software modules to cause …

Pharmacogenomics Guided-Personalization Of Warfarin And Tamoxifen, Theodore J. Wigle, Laura E. Jansen, Wendy A. Teft, Richard B. Kim Dec 2017

Pharmacogenomics Guided-Personalization Of Warfarin And Tamoxifen, Theodore J. Wigle, Laura E. Jansen, Wendy A. Teft, Richard B. Kim

Paediatrics Publications

The use of pharmacogenomics to personalize drug therapy has been a long-sought goal for warfarin and tamoxifen. However, conflicting evidence has created reason for hesitation in recommending pharmacogenomics-guided care for both drugs. This review will provide a summary of the evidence to date on the association between cytochrome P450 enzymes and the clinical end points of warfarin and tamoxifen therapy. Further, highlighting the clinical experiences that we have gained over the past ten years of running a personalized medicine program, we will offer our perspectives on the utility and the limitations of pharmacogenomics-guided care for warfarin and tamoxifen therapy.

Effect Of Counter Ions On The Self-Assembly Of Polystyrene-Polyphosphonium Block Copolymers, Benjamin Hisey, Jasmine V. Buddingh, Elizabeth R. Gillies, Paul J. Ragogna Dec 2017

Effect Of Counter Ions On The Self-Assembly Of Polystyrene-Polyphosphonium Block Copolymers, Benjamin Hisey, Jasmine V. Buddingh, Elizabeth R. Gillies, Paul J. Ragogna

Chemistry Publications

The ability to manipulate block copolymers on the nanoscale has led to many scientific and technological advances. These include nano-scale ordered bulk and thin films and also solution phase components, these are promising materials for making smaller ordered electronics, selective membranes, and also biomedical applications. The ability to manipulate block copolymer material architectures on such small scales has risen from thorough investigations into the properties that affect the architectures. Polyelectrolytes are an important class of polymers that are used to make amphiphilic block copolymers. In this context the authors synthesized polystyrene-b-polyphosphonium block copolymers with different anions coordinated to …
