We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the first Advanced LIGO observing run. This search investigates the low frequency range of Advanced LIGO data, between 20 and 100 Hz, much of which was not explored in initial LIGO. The search was made possible by the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population, corresponding to a sensitivity depth of 48.7 …

Background: According to the CDC, the medical cost for falls was approximately $30 billion in 2012. When a patient falls, and gets serious injury, these costs could sum up to $14,056 per patient. As a result, hospital stays per patient are observed to increase by approximately 6.3 days longer than those patients who haven’t encountered falls.

This study focused on identifying high fall risk patients, and developing a plan of care to reduce the occurrence of falls in a hospital setting. Nurses using safe fall interventions techniques have been proven to inspire fall preventions.

The intention of this quality improvement project is to improve the process of staff development in a 16-bed, acute rehabilitation unit by implementing a mentor-based orientation program. Rehabilitation nursing is a specialty that requires knowledge of the rehab philosophy and milieu. The lack of a rehab-specific educational component of the orientation process causes the new nurses anxiety and dissatisfaction which negatively impacts nurse retention. Each year, 700,000 to 1,000,000 people in the United States fall in hospitals; 30%–35% of those sustain injuries, and 20% of falls will cause serious traumatic injuries. Yet, research shows that close to one-third of these falls could be prevented. This paper presents the analyses of two fall-risk tools, Hendrich II fall risk model (HFRM II) and PMAT, in a local community hospital. The facility has 54-bed capacity with an average daily census of 35 to 40 specializing in cancer, end-stage diseases, cardiac issues, HIV/AIDS, sepsis, palliative and comfort care, diabetes, respiratory diseases, psychiatric and placement patients. The objective of this nurse-driven process improvement project was to implement a cost-effective and practical decolonization protocol to improve outcomes for high-risk veteran populations undergoing surgery at a large veteran’s hospital in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to the implementation, a decolonization protocol was used for cardiac and orthopedic preoperative patients. A baseline prevalence study on Hendrich II Fall Risk Assessment Tool was conducted per the request of the fall committee of a community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hendrich II assessments were completed on 106 patients (n = 106) between September 2017 and November 2017. In addition, assessments by registered nurses on those same patients were obtained via retrospective chart review. Central lines are frequently used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the administration of medications and total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) have the potential to cause harm in the vulnerable neonate. Current evidence shows that having a CLABSI bundle compliance rate of 95 percent or greater correlates with a reduction in CLABSI occurrences. On May 13, 2016, the Obama Administration issued a guidance document entitled “Dear Colleague Letter on Transgender Students,” which interpreted federal law as requiring that transgender students be permitted to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity in schools receiving federal funding. Considerable litigation ensued. Less than a year later, on February 22, 2017, the Trump Administration rescinded this guidance document. The Trump Administration asserts that it should be up to individual states to decide what bathrooms transgender children may use in schools.

After receipt of the Department of Education’s 2011 “Dear Colleague” letter, colleges and universities were impelled to review how their institutions were implementing Title IX.
