New Implementations For Tabulating Pseudoprimes And Liars, Wuyang Liu
New Implementations For Tabulating Pseudoprimes And Liars, Wuyang Liu
Honors Projects
Whether it is applied to primality test or cryptography, pseudoprimes are one of the most important topics in number theory. Regarding the study of strong pseudoprimes, there are two problems which mathematicians have been working on:
1. Given a, b, find all a-spsp up to b.
2. Given an odd composite n, find all a -n such that n is an a-spsp.
where n = a-spsp means n is a strong pseudoprime to base a, and a is a strong liar of n.
The two problems are respectively referred to as …
Accurate Determination And Application Of Local Strain For Studying Tissues With Gradients In Mechanical Properties, John Boyle
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Determination of the mechanical behavior of materials requires an understanding of deformation during loading. While this is traditionally accomplished in engineering by examining a force displacement curve for a whole sample, these techniques implicitly ignore local geometric complexities and local material inhomogeneities commonly found in biologic tissues. Techniques such as normalized cross correlation have been classically applied to address this issue and resolve deformation at the local level; however, these techniques have proven unreliable when deformations become large, if the sample undergoes a rotation, and/or if strain fields become incompatible (e.g. at or near failure).
Presented here is a toolbox …
System Characterizations And Optimized Reconstruction Methods For Novel X-Ray Imaging, Huifeng Guan
System Characterizations And Optimized Reconstruction Methods For Novel X-Ray Imaging, Huifeng Guan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In the past decade there have been many new emerging X-ray based imaging technologies developed for different diagnostic purposes or imaging tasks. However, there exist one or more specific problems that prevent them from being effectively or efficiently employed. In this dissertation, four different novel X-ray based imaging technologies are discussed, including propagation-based phase-contrast (PB-XPC) tomosynthesis, differential X-ray phase-contrast tomography (D-XPCT), projection-based dual-energy computed radiography (DECR), and tetrahedron beam computed tomography (TBCT). System characteristics are analyzed or optimized reconstruction methods are proposed for these imaging modalities. In the first part, we investigated the unique properties of propagation-based phase-contrast imaging technique …
System Optimization And Iterative Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography For Breast Imaging, Yang Lou
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photoacoustic computed tomography(PACT), also known as optoacoustic tomography (OAT), is an emerging imaging technique that has developed rapidly in recent years. The combination of the high optical contrast and the high acoustic resolution of this hybrid imaging technique makes it a promising candidate for human breast imaging, where conventional imaging techniques including X-ray mammography, B-mode ultrasound, and MRI suffer from low contrast, low specificity for certain breast types, and additional risks related to ionizing radiation. Though significant works have been done to push the frontier of PACT breast imaging, it is still challenging to successfully build a PACT breast imaging …
Image Reconstruction Of The Speed Of Sound And Initial Pressure Distributions In Ultrasound Computed Tomography And Photoacoustic Computed Tomography, Thomas Paul Matthews
Image Reconstruction Of The Speed Of Sound And Initial Pressure Distributions In Ultrasound Computed Tomography And Photoacoustic Computed Tomography, Thomas Paul Matthews
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) and photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) are two emerging imaging modalities that have a wide range of potential applications from pre-clinical small animal imaging to cancer screening in human subjects. USCT is typically employed to measure acoustic contrasts, including the speed of sound (SOS) distribution, while PACT typically measures optical contrasts or some related quantity such as the initial pressure distribution. Their complementary contrasts and similar implementations make USCT and PACT a natural fit for a hybrid imaging system. Still, much work remains to realize this promise. First, USCT image reconstruction methods based on the acoustic wave …
Reconstruction Algorithms For Novel Joint Imaging Techniques In Pet, Homayoon Ranjbar
Reconstruction Algorithms For Novel Joint Imaging Techniques In Pet, Homayoon Ranjbar
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Positron emission tomography (PET) is an important functional in vivo imaging modality with many clinical applications. Its enormously wide range of applications has made both research and industry combine it with other imaging modalities such as X-ray computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The general purpose of this work is to study two cases in PET where the goal is to perform image reconstruction jointly on two data types.
The first case is the Beta-Gamma image reconstruction. Positron emitting isotopes, such as 11C, 13N, and 18F, can be used to label molecules, and tracers, such …
Mechanics Of The Developing Brain: From Smooth-Walled Tube To The Folded Cortex, Kara Ellspermann Garcia
Mechanics Of The Developing Brain: From Smooth-Walled Tube To The Folded Cortex, Kara Ellspermann Garcia
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Over the course of human development, the brain undergoes dramatic physical changes to achieve its final, convoluted shape. However, the forces underlying every cinch, bulge, and fold remain poorly understood. This doctoral research focuses on the mechanical processes responsible for early (embryonic) and late (preterm) brain development.
First, we examine early brain development in the chicken embryo, which is similar to human at these stages. Research has primarily focused on molecular signals to describe morphogenesis, but mechanical analysis can also provide important insights. Using a combination of experiments and finite element modeling, we find that actomyosin contraction is responsible for …

Binding Affinity And Specificity Of Sh2 Domain Interactions In Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Signaling Networks, Tom Ronan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling mechanisms play a central role in intracellular signaling and control development of multicellular organisms, cell growth, cell migration, and programmed cell death. Dysregulation of these signaling mechanisms results in defects of development and diseases such as cancer. Control of this network relies on the specificity and selectivity of Src Homology 2 (SH2) domain interactions with phosphorylated target peptides. In this work, we review and identify the limitations of current quantitative understanding of SH2 domain interactions, and identify severe limitations in accuracy and availability of SH2 domain interaction data. We propose a framework to address some …
The Applications Of The Internet Of Things In The Context Of The Smart City. Selected Security Issues, Artur Rot
European Management Studies
Wishing to be more friendly to their citizens and to be managed more efficiently, cities are using a variety of modern ICT solutions for their needs. In this way, the smart city concept is being implemented, using, among others, the Internet of Things (IoT), which will become a key tool to improve the functioning of urban agglomerations. This idea develops very dynamically and creates tremendous opportunities for smart cities. But in addition to the benefits it brings, it also creates serious threats, primarily for privacy and personal data protection. Its applications improve our lives but also create new forms of …

Beyond A Zero-Sum Federal Trust Responsibility: Lessons From Federal Indian Energy Policy, Monte Mills
Beyond A Zero-Sum Federal Trust Responsibility: Lessons From Federal Indian Energy Policy, Monte Mills
American Indian Law Journal
The federal government’s trust relationship with federally- recognized Indian tribes is a product of the last two centuries of Federal Indian Law and federal-tribal relations. For approximately the last 50 years, the federal government has sought to promote tribal self-determination as a means to carry out its trust responsibilities to Indian tribes; but the shadows of prior federal policies, based largely on notions of tribal incompetence and federal paternalism, remain. Perhaps no other policy arena better demonstrates the history, evolution, and promise for reform of the federal trust relationship than Federal Indian energy policy, or the range of federal statutes …
Understanding Behavioral Health And Treatment Engagement With Former Users Of Prenatal Substances: A Strengths-Focused Mixed Methods Inquiry, Jennifer G. Benson, Peggy Maclean, Andrew Hsi, Sarah J. Erickson
Understanding Behavioral Health And Treatment Engagement With Former Users Of Prenatal Substances: A Strengths-Focused Mixed Methods Inquiry, Jennifer G. Benson, Peggy Maclean, Andrew Hsi, Sarah J. Erickson
Psychology ETDs
Accessible services for users of prenatal substances are lacking, and treatment engagement is poor with services that are available. Furthermore, legal consequences are often punitive, which ultimately damages the well-being of mother and child. Milagro and FOCUS are two New Mexico programs that provide comprehensive, coordinated care, including medication-assisted treatment, to former users of prenatal substances during pregnancy (in the Milagro Program) and for three years post-birth (in the FOCUS Program). This mixed methods study explored the lived experiences of women from this complex, high-risk population, using a high-engagement sample of women who utilized services at both Milagro and FOCUS. …

When the government investigates a crime, do citizens have a duty to assist? This question was raised in the struggle between Apple and the FBI over whether the agency could compel Apple to defeat its own password protections on the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters. That case was voluntarily dismissed as moot when the government found a way of accessing the data on the phone, but the issue remains unresolved.
Because of advances in technology, software providers and device makers have been able to develop almost impenetrable protection for their customers’ information, effectively locking law enforcement out …

The Fourth Amendment Disclosure Doctrines, Monu Bedi
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
The third party and public disclosure doctrines (together the “disclosure doctrines”) are long-standing hurdles to Fourth Amendment protection. These doctrines have become increasingly relevant to assessing the government’s use of recent technologies such as data mining, drone surveillance, and cell site location data. It is surprising then that both the Supreme Court and scholars, at times, have associated them together as expressing one principle. It turns out that each relies on unique foundational triggers and does not stand or fall with the other. This Article tackles this issue and provides a comprehensive topology for analyzing the respective contours of each …

The Investigative Dynamics Of The Use Of Malware By Law Enforcement, Paul Ohm
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
The police have started to use malware—and other forms of government hacking—to solve crimes. Some fear coming abuses—the widespread use of malware when traditional investigative techniques would work just as well or to investigate political opponents or dissident speakers. This Article argues that these abuses will be checked, at least in part, by the very nature of malware and the way it must be controlled. This analysis utilizes a previously unformalized research methodology called “investigative dynamics” to come to these conclusions. Because every use of malware risks spoiling the tool—by revealing a software vulnerability that can be patched—the police will …
Carpenter V. United States And The Fourth Amendment: The Best Way Forward, Stephen E. Henderson
Carpenter V. United States And The Fourth Amendment: The Best Way Forward, Stephen E. Henderson
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
We finally have a federal ‘test case.’ In Carpenter v. United States, the Supreme Court is poised to set the direction of the Fourth Amendment in the digital age. The case squarely presents how the twentieth-century third party doctrine will fare in contemporary times, and the stakes could not be higher. This Article reviews the Carpenter case and how it fits within the greater discussion of the Fourth Amendment third party doctrine and location surveillance, and I express a hope that the Court will be both a bit ambitious and a good measure cautious.
As for ambition, the Court …
