Sense Of Place In Military Children's New Community And School Environment, Myriam C. Imhoff Dec 2017

Sense Of Place In Military Children's New Community And School Environment, Myriam C. Imhoff

Education

Relocation, or permanent change of station (PCS) is one of the constants of the military lifestyle. Thus, every two to three years, dependent children of enlisted military are uprooted from a place and forced to call a new place home. The goal of this research project is to provide a resource for teachers who have transient military children in their classroom and help them develop a sense of place in their new community and school environment. Scholarly literature on geographic mobility, stress and coping, education, sense of place, and place attachment as well as existing educational resources for military families …

Experimental And Numerical Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing, Mohammad Hoveidafar Dec 2017

Experimental And Numerical Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing, Mohammad Hoveidafar

Engineering

Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) has many applications in different fields such as stimulation of oil and gas reservoirs, in situ stress measurements, stress relief for tunneling projects as well as in underground mining applications such as block caving mining. In the HF process, high pressure fluid is injected into a well to generate fractures in tight rock formations. This technique is particularly suitable for developing hydrocarbon energy resources in tight rock formations such as shale with very low permeability. An experimental setup was designed and developed to simulate the HF process in the laboratory. Cubic plaster specimens were molded and HF …

Meta-Analysis Of Hydraulic Fracture Conductivity Data, Mohammed Rashnur Rahman Dec 2017

Meta-Analysis Of Hydraulic Fracture Conductivity Data, Mohammed Rashnur Rahman

Engineering

Previous empirical models of propped fracture conductivity are based either on data sourced from single investigations or on data not in the public domain. In this work, statistically rigorous models of propped fracture conductivity are developed using a database of fracture conductivity experiments reported in technical literature over the last 40 years. The database contains the results from about 2700 experimental runs. Propped fracture conductivity is the dependent variable and proppant types, mesh size, proppant concentration, formation hardness, closure stress, formation temperature, and polymer concentration are the independent variables. The mother database is partitioned into subsets; that is different databases …

Assessing Receptivity To Empirically Supported Treatments In Rape Crisis Centers, Tonya Edmond, Rachel Voth Schrag

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

Survivors of sexual violence are at risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety. There are several empirically supported treatments (EST) that are effective for addressing these trauma symptoms; however, uptake of these ESTs among Rape Crisis Center (RCC) counselors is low. This research project sought to determine counselors’ attitudes toward evidence-based practices (EBPs); their perceptions of the intervention characteristics of three specific ESTs: Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy; and differences in attitudes and perceptions based on agency setting (urban/rural) and counselor education. The Consolidated Framework for Advancing Implementation Science (CFIR) was used …

Integrating Herbivore Population Dynamics Into A Global Land Biosphere Model: Plugging Animals Into The Earth System, Shree R. S. Dangal, Hanqin Tian, Chaoqun Lu, Wei Ren, Shufen Pan, Jia Yang, Nicola Di Cosmo, Amy Hessl

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Mammalian herbivores are an essential component of grassland and savanna ecosystems, and with feedbacks to the climate system. To date, the response and feedbacks of mammalian herbivores to changes in both abiotic and biotic factors are poorly quantified and not adequately represented in the current global land surface modeling framework. In this study, we coupled herbivore population dynamics in a global land model (the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model, DLEM 3.0) to simulate populations of horses, cattle, sheep, and goats, and their responses to changes in multiple environmental factors at the site level across different continents during 1980–2010. Simulated results show …

Natural Histories Of Yup'ik Memoirs, Caroline R. Crecelius

Anthropology

This thesis explores how cultural knowledge is committed to textual form and circulated within and outside of linguistically marginalized communities. Working within a Central Yup'ik context, I have focused my research on collections of Yup'ik elders' memoirs housed within the Alaska Native Language Archive. Published Yup'ik elders' memoirs offer rich descriptions of Yup'ik cultural histories, epistemologies and statements about language, the expression and inclusion of which varies based on the interactional contexts, participant frameworks and funding institutions through which they were produced. This study incorporates both Indigenous and non-Indigenous theoretical frameworks related to the process of entextualization, or text creation, …

Recycled Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites Incorporated In Mortar For Improved Mechanical Performance, Harry Rodin, Somayeh Nassiri, Karl Englund, Osama Fakron, Hui Li

CESTiCC Project Reports

Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) recycled from retired wind turbines was implemented in mortar as a volumetric replacement of sand during the two phases of this study. In Phase I, the mechanically refined GFRP particle sizes were sieved for four size groups to find the optimum size. In Phase II, the select GFRP size group was incorporated at three different volumetric replacements of sand to identify the optimum replacement content. The mixtures were tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, toughness, and the potential for alkali-silicate reaction. Incorporation of GFRP in mortar proves promising in improving flexural strength and toughness in …

Ultimately, Veterans Affairs (VA) officials have boosted their mental health personnel and suicide hotline …

Extending The Lattice-Based Smoother Using A Generalized Additive Model, Gulfaya Rakhmetova Dec 2017

Extending The Lattice-Based Smoother Using A Generalized Additive Model, Gulfaya Rakhmetova

Mathematics and Statistics

The Lattice Based Smoother was introduced by McIntyre and Barry (2017) to estimate a surface defined over an irregularly-shaped region. In this paper we consider extending their method to allow for additional covariates and non-continuous responses. We describe our extension which utilizes the framework of generalized additive models. A simulation study shows that our method is comparable to the Soap film smoother of Wood et al. (2008), under a number of different conditions. Finally we illustrate the method's practical use by applying it to a real data set.

Detection, Source Location, And Analysis Of Volcano Infrasound, Kathleen F. Mckee Dec 2017

Detection, Source Location, And Analysis Of Volcano Infrasound, Kathleen F. Mckee

Geosciences

The study of volcano infrasound focuses on low frequency sound from volcanoes, how volcanic processes produce it, and the path it travels from the source to our receivers. In this dissertation we focus on detecting, locating, and analyzing infrasound from a number of different volcanoes using a variety of analysis techniques. These works will help inform future volcano monitoring using infrasound with respect to infrasonic source location, signal characterization, volatile flux estimation, and back-azimuth to source determination. Source location is an important component of the study of volcano infrasound and in its application to volcano monitoring. Semblance is a forward …

Bayesian Methods In Glaciology, Douglas Brinkerhoff Dec 2017

Bayesian Methods In Glaciology, Douglas Brinkerhoff

Geosciences

The problem of inferring the value of unobservable model parameters given a set of observations is ubiquitous in glaciology, as are large measurement errors. Bayes' theorem provides a unified framework for addressing such problems in a rigorous and robust way through Monte Carlo sampling of posterior distributions, which provides not only the optimal solution for a given inverse problem, but also the uncertainty. We apply these methods to three glaciological problems. First, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to infer the importance of different glacier hydrological processes from observations of terminus water flux and surface speed. We find that …

Arctic Landscape Dynamics: Modern Processes And Pleistocene Legacies, Louise M. Farquharson Dec 2017

Arctic Landscape Dynamics: Modern Processes And Pleistocene Legacies, Louise M. Farquharson

Geosciences

The Arctic Cryosphere (AC) is sensitive to rapid climate changes. The response of glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost-influenced landscapes to warming is complicated by polar amplification of global climate change which is caused by the presence of thresholds in the physics of energy exchange occurring around the freezing point of water. To better understand how the AC has and will respond to warming climate, we need to understand landscape processes that are operating and interacting across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This dissertation presents three studies from Arctic Alaska that use a combination of field surveys, sedimentology, …

Satellite Remote Sensing Of Active Wildfires In Alaska's Boreal Forest, Christine F. Waigl Dec 2017

Satellite Remote Sensing Of Active Wildfires In Alaska's Boreal Forest, Christine F. Waigl

Geosciences

This research addresses improvements to the detection and characterization of active wildfires in Alaska with satellite-based sensors. The VIIRS I-band Fire Detection Algorithm for High Latitudes (VIFDAHL) was developed and evaluated against existing active fire products from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This new algorithm is based on VIIRS 375 m spatial resolution imagery and was tuned using fires in Alaska's boreal forest. It provides improved fire detection of low-intensity fires, especially during daytime and at sensor zenith angles smaller than approximately 50° off nadir. Low-intensity active fires, which represent residual …

Bringing Twygs To Life: Pace Based Lessons In An Adult Esl Classroom, Erica Harris Dec 2017

Bringing Twygs To Life: Pace Based Lessons In An Adult Esl Classroom, Erica Harris

Linguistics

English grammar is a daunting subject for language learners and teachers alike. Traditionally, grammar is taught in an explicit manner in a teacher-fronted classroom. Rules are given and explained to students, who then practice with drills and example problems. As an alternative approach to teaching grammar, this project incorporates the PACE model (Presentation, Attention, Co-Construction, Extension) and task-based language teaching (TBLT). This method of teaching is a departure from traditional explicit-style teaching, and focuses more on the learner's role in the classroom than on the teacher's role. The PACE model uses stories to teach grammar, in this case English prepositions. …

Automatic Detection Of Sensor Calibration Errors In Mining Industry, Rambabu Pothina Dec 2017

Automatic Detection Of Sensor Calibration Errors In Mining Industry, Rambabu Pothina

Engineering

Sensor errors cost the mining industry millions of dollars in losses each year. Unlike gross errors, "calibration errors" are subtle, develop over time, and are difficult to identify. Economic losses start accumulating even when errors are small. Therefore, the aim of this research was to develop methods to identify calibration errors well before they become obvious. The goal in this research was to detect errors at a bias as low as 2% in magnitude. The innovative strategy developed relied on relationships between a variety of sensors to detect when a given sensor started to stray. Sensors in a carbon stripping …

Circulation And Dynamics On The Northeastern Chukchi Sea Shelf, Ying-Chih Fang Dec 2017

Circulation And Dynamics On The Northeastern Chukchi Sea Shelf, Ying-Chih Fang

Oceanography

The circulation on the northeastern Chukchi Sea shelf is controlled by the poleward pressure gradient between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Local winds modulate the upper ocean and can rapidly alter the flow field. Present understanding of the circulation is largely based on subsurface measurements, but the response of near-surface currents to the slowly-varying secular pressure gradient and rapidly-varying local winds has not been addressed. I analyzed surface current data, extending more ~150 km offshore in the northeastern Chukchi Sea, collected from shore-based high-frequency radar systems (HFR) during the open water season. I find three wind-induced circulation regimes. Two of …

Baseline Data Of Bird Populations In The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Mexico: A Citizen Science Approach, Teresa S. Anderson Dec 2017

Baseline Data Of Bird Populations In The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Mexico: A Citizen Science Approach, Teresa S. Anderson

Natural Resources

This project tested the viability of converting a local environmental education group, "Eco Chavos" into a team of citizen scientists. In rural biosphere reserves in Mexico, with few resources and large resident populations, community-based biological inventory and monitoring has the potential to increase the impact of Mexican biosphere reserves by generating scientific information and engaging local residents in hands-on environmental education. To test this, I formed a citizen science birding group and trained them in bird identification, survey techniques, data collection, and data management. The project began in January 2016 and in December 2016 I stopped mentoring the program and …

Perceptions Of Success: A Case Study Of Planning For Climate Change In Shaktoolik, Alaska, Stefan G. Tangen Dec 2017

Perceptions Of Success: A Case Study Of Planning For Climate Change In Shaktoolik, Alaska, Stefan G. Tangen

Natural Resources

Climate change planning is increasingly used in places like northwest Alaska where people are dealing with the effects of global climate change in dramatic and life altering ways. Planning for climate change often involves multiple actors from all levels of government working together with various goals, motivations, and perceptions of success. This research provides a perspective on what compelled the community of Shaktoolik to formally plan for climate change, documenting who they worked with throughout the process, the dynamics involved, and the outcomes created. I used a case study approach and qualitative methods in the form of participant observation, semi-structured …

Evaluation Of Growth And Migration Trends On The Survival And Recruitment Of Chinook Salmon In Southeastern Alaska Rivers, Stephanie Berkman Dec 2017

Evaluation Of Growth And Migration Trends On The Survival And Recruitment Of Chinook Salmon In Southeastern Alaska Rivers, Stephanie Berkman

Fisheries

Highly variable recruitment and declines in productivity and abundance of Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha have created economic and cultural hardships for communities throughout Alaska. Although pre- and post-smolt growth are important for determining brood-year (BY) survival and productivity for Pacific salmon through size-mediated mortality, these relationships remain unclear for Chinook Salmon. As a result, it is necessary to better understand the relationships between environmental and biological factors that influence freshwater and marine growth, smolt outmigrations, and recruitment success. This study used retrospective growth to identify the importance of annual growth in determining BY survival and recruitment, determine if growth dependency …

Interdisciplinary Assessment Of The Skate Fishery In The Gulf Of Alaska, Thomas J. Farrugia Dec 2017

Interdisciplinary Assessment Of The Skate Fishery In The Gulf Of Alaska, Thomas J. Farrugia

Fisheries

Skates are common bottom-dwelling fishes and valuable non-target species in Gulf of Alaska fisheries. Although there is little demand for skates in the United States, markets in Europe and Asia are fueling desires for additional fishing opportunities on skates in Alaska. Management agencies, however, have been hesitant to allow increased harvests due to the lack of information on the ecology and population dynamics of skates, and the bioeconomics of skate fisheries. Specifically focusing on the two most commonly landedskate species in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA), the big skate (Beringraja binoculata) and the longnose skate (Raja rhina), I conducted an …

Diets Of Four Eelpout Species (Genus Lycodes) In The U.S. Beaufort Sea Based On Analyses Of Stomach Contents And Stable Isotopes Of Nitrogen And Carbon, Sarah J. Apsens Dec 2017

Diets Of Four Eelpout Species (Genus Lycodes) In The U.S. Beaufort Sea Based On Analyses Of Stomach Contents And Stable Isotopes Of Nitrogen And Carbon, Sarah J. Apsens

Fisheries

Eelpouts of the genus Lycodes are an abundant group of demersal fishes in the U.S. Beaufort Sea. Currently eelpout diet and the exact role of eelpouts in the Arctic food web are poorly understood. Additionally, if and how eelpouts avoid intra- and interspecific competition for resources is unknown. In this study, diets of four common Beaufort Sea eelpout species were analyzed with respect to along-shelf (longitude) gradients, across-shelf (depth) gradients, and ontogeny (fish body length) to determine diet composition and patterns of resource partitioning. Diets of the four most numerous eelpout species were analyzed using a combination of stomach contents …

Straying, Stress, And Potential For Reproductive Interactions Between Hatchery-Produced And Wild Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) In Southeast Alaska, Casey John Mcconnell Dec 2017

Straying, Stress, And Potential For Reproductive Interactions Between Hatchery-Produced And Wild Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) In Southeast Alaska, Casey John Mcconnell

Fisheries

Approximately 1.5 billion juvenile hatchery-produced Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are currently released each year into Alaskan waters with goals of enhancing important fisheries and minimizing detrimental impacts on wild stocks. As the abundance of hatchery-produced salmon has increased, so have concerns about hatchery-origin strays entering wild systems and interactions with wild individuals on the spawning grounds. The influx of non-native strays and their associated fitness-related traits can reduce the resilience and productivity of recipient wild stocks, and is likely to be most deleterious when disparities in population sizes and heritable phenotypic characteristics between wild and hatchery fish exist. Thus, understanding …

Pacific Sleeper Sharks In The Northeast Pacific Ocean: Relative Abundance, Plausible Incidental Exploitation Rates, Trophic Ecology, And Habitat Use, Dean Louis Courtney Dec 2017

Pacific Sleeper Sharks In The Northeast Pacific Ocean: Relative Abundance, Plausible Incidental Exploitation Rates, Trophic Ecology, And Habitat Use, Dean Louis Courtney

Fisheries

Pacific sleeper shark relative abundance indices in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were developed from sablefish longline surveys and the sustainability of a plausible range in Pacific sleeper shark incidental exploitation rates in the Gulf of Alaska was evaluated with a risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulation for use in fisheries management. A significant increase in Pacific sleeper shark relative abundance was identified in the Gulf of Alaska during the years 1989-2003. The aggregate risk of ending in an overfished condition in the Gulf of Alaska increased from 0% under a low exploitation rate scenario to 59% …

Estimating Sizes Of Fish Consumed By Ice Seals Using Otolith Length-Fish Length Relationships, Kelly Walker Dec 2017

Estimating Sizes Of Fish Consumed By Ice Seals Using Otolith Length-Fish Length Relationships, Kelly Walker

Fisheries

Arctic fishes and ice seals are key components of the Alaskan Arctic ecosystem. Bearded (Erignathus barbatus), spotted (Phoca largha) and ringed (Pusa hispida) seals are consumers of Arctic marine fishes. Little is known about the sizes of fish that ice seals consume because prey items are digested quickly once exposed to stomach acids. Otoliths, fish ear bones, are often the only parts of a fish that remain in a seal stomach. Otolith length relates directly to fish length, making size estimations of consumed fish possible for piscivore diet studies. Otoliths were measured from fishes collected from cruises in the Beaufort …

Migration Patterns And Energetics Of Adult Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawystcha In Alaska Rivers, Kristin R. Neuneker Dec 2017

Migration Patterns And Energetics Of Adult Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawystcha In Alaska Rivers, Kristin R. Neuneker

Fisheries

Adult Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha undertake extensive and energetically costly migrations between food resources in the ocean and their freshwater spawning habitats, requiring them to adapt behavioral and physiological traits that allow them to successfully reach their spawning streams and reproduce. Such adaptations may be shaped by physical factors in the environment and individual- and population-specific biological characteristics. Chinook Salmon in North America are important resources for both United States and Canadian stakeholders, but relatively little is known about their freshwater migration patterns and energetic status in many rivers across their range. This research explored variation in migration timing and …
