Bud Management Affects Fruit Wood, Growth, And Precocity Of Cherry Trees, İdri̇s Maci̇t, Gregory A. Lang, Hüsnü Demi̇rsoy
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
As the production benefits of pruning fruit trees have been realized, growers have begun pruning periodically and, accordingly, various canopy training systems have begun to be developed. Following the genetic development of dwarfing rootstocks, interest has grown in the creation of modern training systems for smaller, more efficient orchards. During the formation of these training systems, it became apparent that branches of a certain size can alter the partitioning of growth resources (nutrients and carbohydrates) within the tree, delaying the formation of the target canopy structure as well as fruit bearing. In recent years, studies have focused on management of …

Sulphured and unsulphured sun-dried apricots of Alkaya, a new variety of Prunus armeniaca L. grown in the Malatya region of Turkey, were compared to study the effects of sulphur treatment on their physicochemical characteristics and aroma compounds. Colour, texture, moisture, pH, total soluble solids, sugars, organic acids, and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural contents were determined. Aroma compounds were quantified and identified by GC-MS-FID. Sulphuring treatment before sun-drying had significant effects on some physicochemical properties (pH, titratable acidity, total acids, and colour parameters) and aroma compounds of Alkaya apricots. Colour parameters showed that browning was higher in the unsulphured apricots than in the …

Introduction and aims: The etiology of ALS remains unknown despite the identification of mutated genes in familial and/or sporadic ALS. It is thought that aggregates of disease-causing mutant proteins and RNAs disrupt the normal cellular functions that leads to dying back neuropathy and motor neuron degeneration. Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to play a major role in the pathology of ALS (1–3). Therefore, restoration of mitochondrial function is likely to cause beneficial effects for the survival of ALS model mice (4).
The objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of oxaloacetate for the neuromuscular function and lifespan of the …

Homo Humanus: An Installation Investigating The Omnipresence Of Self-Documentation, Ashley Elizabeth Jones
Honors Program Theses
Historically, human beings have always been interested in documenting themselves and the world around them. Early humans left hand prints on cave walls, marking their presence for the future; royalty throughout history have commissioned portraits of themselves to leave their immortal mark on the world; Polaroid pictures and letters kept in parents’ closets record the earlier days of their lives. Today, humans document their daily lives digitally through social media platforms like Snapchat and Facebook. Images posted to these sites pervade our lives: they are constant, everywhere, and range from photographs of meals to quick snapshot self-portraits – “selfies” – …
Electrically Small Antenna With Switchless Pattern Reconfiguration, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
Electrically Small Antenna With Switchless Pattern Reconfiguration, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
Conference Papers
An electrically small pattern reconfigurable antenna is proposed. It allows adjustment of the radiation pattern by applying a phase shift between its two ports. The structure is a cylinder with λ/5 diameter. Simulated results show good operation at 2.44 GHz and three different radiation patterns are demonstrated by applying three different phase shifts. The antenna's principles of operation and limitations are explained based on the theory of spherical modes.

Compact Antenna For Digital Beamforming With Software Defined Radios, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Marek Plotka, Lukasz Kulas, Krzysztof Nyka, Mateusz Rzymowski
Conference Papers
An adaptive radio system combining compact switchless reconfigurable antenna with Software Defined Radio is proposed. The system allows control of the direction of the transmitted signal solely by adjusting the baseband I and Q components of the modulated signal, while maintaining small antenna size through the use of compact multiport antenna. The system is demonstrated in a line-of-sight configuration with QPSK modulation. Experimental results demonstrate good received power and low error vector magnitude of the demodulated signals.

Easy-To-Deploy Lc-Loaded Dipole And Monopole Antennas For Cubesat, Korbinian Schraml, Adam Narbudowicz, Suramate Chalermwisutkul, Dirk Heberling, Max Ammann
Conference Papers
This paper proposes a new approach to reduce weight and complexity of VHF/UHF cubesat antennas by utilizing a dual band antenna, rather than standard two-antenna system routinely implemented in cubesats. Three systems are compared: A standard system with separate transmit/receive dipoles, a dual-band dipole for both transmit and receive and a dual-band monopole, which uses the body of 1U cubesat (10 × 10 × 10cm) as a “groundplane”. Additionally it is demonstrated that with appropriate feed the dipole might be used in monopole configuration in case of deployment system malfunction.
Directional Modulation For Compact Devices, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
Directional Modulation For Compact Devices, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
Articles
A new directional modulation system which uses radiation pattern data for modulation encoding is proposed. The approach allows compact multiport antennas (e.g. MIMO capable antennas) to be used for directional modulation, replacing extensive arrays. The modulation weighting coefficients are calculated with a fixed, antenna specific equation, thus reducing computational complexity. The solution is intended to enhance privacy in small, battery-operated wireless devices, required for “Internet of Things” applications.

Design Of A Compact, Fully-Autonomous 433 Mhz Tunable Antenna For Wearable Wireless Sensor Applications, John Buckley, Kevin Mccarthy, Domenico Gaetano, Loizos Loizou, Brendan O'Flynn, Cian O'Mathuna
Articles
The authors present the design of a tunable 433 MHz antenna that is tailored for wearable wireless sensor applications. This study first presents a detailed analysis of the measured impedance characteristics of a chosen antenna under test (AUT) in varying proximity to a human test subject. Instead of limiting the analysis to the head and hand only, this analysis measures the AUT impedance at varying distances from 11 different body positions. A novel antenna equivalent circuit model is then developed that enables both the free-space and total on-body AUT impedance variation to be rapidly computed using a circuit simulator instead …

Hamiltonian Dynamics Of Cosmological Quintessence Models, Rossen Ivanov, Emil Prodanov
Hamiltonian Dynamics Of Cosmological Quintessence Models, Rossen Ivanov, Emil Prodanov
Articles
The time-evolution dynamics of two nonlinear cosmological real gas models has been reexamined in detail with methods from the theory of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. These examples are FRWL cosmologies, one based on a gas, satisfying the van der Waals equation and another one based on the virial expansion gas equation. The cosmological variables used are the expansion rate, given by the Hubble parameter, and the energy density. The analysis is aided by the existence of global first integral as well as several special (second) integrals in each case. In addition, the global first integral can serve as a Hamiltonian for …

Cervical dystonia is a common neurological movement disorder characterised by muscle contractions causing abnormal movements and postures affecting the head and neck. The neural networks underpinning this condition are incompletely understood. While animal models suggest a role for the superior colliculus in its pathophysiology, this link has yet to be established in humans. The present experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that disrupted superior collicular processing is evident in affected patients and in relatives harbouring a disease-specific endophenotype (abnormal temporal discrimination). The study participants were 16 cervical dystonia patients, 16 unaffected first-degree relatives with abnormal temporal discrimination, 16 unaffected …
Why The State?, Joseph Raz
Why The State?, Joseph Raz
Faculty Scholarship
I offer two questions for the price of one: Why do so many jurisprudential theories focus on the state? And what is it about the State that gives it a special place in our social arrangements? I do not mean these to address all aspects of states. They are questions about the law or legal systems of states.
We have to be open to a negative answer to the second question, thus being critical of jurisprudential theories that focus more or less exclusively on the state. That need not deny that states have their own legal systems. It could merely …

Risk Mitigation Through Diversified Farm Production Strategies: The Case In Northern Mozambique, Olivia C. Caillouet, Lawton L. Nalley, Amy L. Farmer
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Mozambique, like many other parts of the low-income world, faces perennial challenges with food security. With a rapidly growing population and arable land on the decline, sustainable agriculture is vital to managing the already depleted natural resources of Sub-Saharan Africa more effectively while increasing food security. Food security issues for subsistence farmers in most low-income countries are a product of endogenous (crop yields) and exogenous (currency fluctuations as many agricultural inputs are imported) factors. In Mozambique the value of the local currency, meticals, has decreased by approximately 50% since January 2015 compared to the U.S. dollar. While this makes exporting …

The Choice Theory Of Contracts – Preface & Introduction, Hanoch Dagan, Michael Heller
Faculty Scholarship
This concise landmark in law and jurisprudence offers the first coherent, liberal account of contract law. "The Choice Theory of Contracts" answers the field's most pressing questions: What is the “freedom” in “freedom of contract”? What core values animate contract law and how do those values interrelate? How must the state act when it shapes contract law? Hanoch Dagan and Michael Heller show exactly why and how freedom matters to contract. They start with the most appealing tenets of modern liberalism and end with their implications for contract law. This readable, engaging book gives contract scholars, teachers, and students a …

Proper vertebrate development is controlled by a tightly regulated sequence of gene activation and repression. Exposure to both endogenous (hormones, gene products) and exogenous (environmental chemicals, toxins, etc.) substances during development can have profound effects on morphology by altering growth, cell fate, cell differentiation, and cell migration. Waterways have long been hot-spots for chemical and toxin accumulation, due to runoff and waste dumping. Growing concern is being paid to endocrine disruptors, like estrogen (17β-estradiol), which are found in increasing levels in rivers and streams. Endocrine disruptors are known to cause a varied number of defects in fish species, but the …

Under the prevailing interpretation of the Eighth Amendment in the lower courts, a defendant who causes a death inadvertently in the course of a felony is eligible for capital punishment. This unfortunate interpretation rests on an unduly mechanical reading of the Supreme Court’s decisions in Enmund v. Florida and Tison v. Arizona, which require culpability for capital punishment of co-felons who do not kill. The lower courts have drawn the unwarranted inference that these cases permit execution of those who cause death without any culpability towards death. This Article shows that this mechanical reading of precedent is mistaken, because the …
China's And India's Differing Investment Treaty And Dispute Settlement Experiences And Implications For Africa, Won Kidane
Faculty Publications
This Article examines China’s and India’s differing investment treaty and dispute settlement experiences and the resulting implications for Africa.
