On The Interaction Between Gravity Waves And Atmospheric Thermal Tides, Ryan Matthew Agner Jan 2017

On The Interaction Between Gravity Waves And Atmospheric Thermal Tides, Ryan Matthew Agner

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Gravity waves and thermal tides are two of the most important dynamical features of the atmosphere. They are both generated in the lower atmosphere and propagate upward transporting energy and momentum to the upper atmosphere. This dissertation focuses on the interaction of these waves in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region of the atmosphere using both observational data and Global Circulation Model (GCMs). The first part of this work focuses on observations of gravity wave interactions with the tides using both LIDAR data at the Star Fire Optical Range (SOR, 35_N, 106.5_W) and a meteor radar data at the …

Cross-Scale Energy Transport And Kinetic Wave Properties Associated With Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability, Thomas W. Moore Jan 2017

Cross-Scale Energy Transport And Kinetic Wave Properties Associated With Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability, Thomas W. Moore

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In the Earth’s magnetosphere, the magnetotail plasma sheet ions are much hotter than in the shocked solar wind. On the dawn-sector, the cold-component ions are more abundant and hotter by 30-40 percent when compared to the dusk sector. Recent statistical studies of the flank magnetopause and magnetosheath have shown that the level of temperature asymmetry of the magnetosheath is unable to account for this (Dimmock et al., 2015), so additional physical mechanisms must be at play, either at the magnetopause or plasma sheet, that contribute to this asymmetry. This thesis focuses on ion heating across the magnetopause boundary separating the …

Gravity Wave And Turbulence Transport In The Mesopause Region, Yafang Guo Jan 2017

Gravity Wave And Turbulence Transport In The Mesopause Region, Yafang Guo

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Vertical transport due to dissipating gravity waves and turbulence in the mesopause region (85-100 km) are analyzed with observational data obtained from a narrow-band sodium wind/temperature lidar located at Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO), Cerro Pach´on (30.25 S, 70.73 W), Chile. The Na lidar at ALO has been in regular operation since 2010. The upgrade of the lidar system in May 2014 resulted in great improvements of the signal levels, which enabled data acquisition of high temporal and vertical resolutions reaching 6 s and 25 m. Traditional data processing utilizes signals at lower resolutions, typically at 60 s and 500 m, …

Variable Structure Feedback Control With Application To Spacecraft With Small Thrust Propulsion Systems, Samuel J. Kitchen-Mckinley Jan 2017

Variable Structure Feedback Control With Application To Spacecraft With Small Thrust Propulsion Systems, Samuel J. Kitchen-Mckinley

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Small spacecrafts requiring small propulsion systems are becoming more popular for low Earth orbit. It is important for these research satellites to have accurate guidance and control systems. Small propulsion systems will also be beneficial for multiple small spacecrafts used future exploration expeditions beyond low Earth orbit. These small spacecrafts benefit from the simplicity of low thrust cold gas propulsion systems. Additionally, large spacecrafts using low thrust, high specific impulse propellants for main propulsion systems, such as ion engines, allow longer and more flexible missions, including Earth orbiting spacecraft and interplanetary spacecraft.

In order to extend the life of future …

This objective focuses on: 1) formulating agent utility functions for ABM, based on discrete choice theory; 2) applying ABM to account for the effect of information diffusion on community acceptance; and 3) explaining the relationship between initial conditions, topology, and rate of interactions, on one hand, and community acceptance on the other …

The Effect Of Testing Conditions On Lost Circulation Materials' Performance In Simulated Fractures, Montri Jeennakorn Jan 2017

The Effect Of Testing Conditions On Lost Circulation Materials' Performance In Simulated Fractures, Montri Jeennakorn

Doctoral Dissertations

"Lost circulation (LOC) problems increase costs of drilling significantly. It is not only the cost of the drilling fluid that is lost into the formation but also the costs of subsequent problems that can be higher than the cost of the drilling fluids. LOC also possibly leads to a serious risk of blowout incident.

Lost circulation materials (LCM) are regularly added to the drilling fluids with an expectation of plugging the flow path. Due to the difficulties of testing and monitoring LCM sealing processes in the field, LCM evaluation in the laboratory is often used to prove and assure successful …

Pillar Design For St. Peter Sandstone Formation, Francis Anohomah Arthur

Doctoral Dissertations

"Silica sands produced primarily from St. Peter Sandstone are used for hydraulic fracturing in the petroleum industry, glassmaking, chemicals, ceramics, filtration and the foundry industry in the US. The recent high demand for silica sands for hydraulic fracturing has triggered increased production and commissioning of new silica sand mines to support natural gas production from shale and tight gas deposits in the US. Most mines use surface mining methods to extract St. Peter Sandstone. The room and pillar mining method has been successfully used for St. Peter Sandstone mining in a few US locations, however, no one has proposed a …

Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony Jan 2017

Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this dissertation is to give an analytic disc approach to the CR extension problem. Analytic discs give a very convenient tool for holomorphic extension of CR functions. The type function is introduced and showed how these type functions have direct application to important questions about CR extension. In this dissertation the CR extension theorem is proved for a rigid hypersurface M in C2 given by y = (Re ω)m(Im ω)n where m and n are non-negative integers. If the type function is identically zero at the origin, then there is no CR extension. …

Beyond Behaviors, Needs, And Seeking: A Qualitative Investigation Of Information Practices Among Individuals, Vanessa Kitzie

Faculty Publications

This dissertation examines the information practices of individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ+). It responds to two significant problems in current Library and Information Science (LIS) studies examining these populations. First, there exist a paucity of research studying how these individuals act toward and interact with information related to their LGBTQ+ identities. Second, extant research focuses on almost exclusively on gay and lesbian sexualities, imposing a liminal, psychological model of identity development on these actions and interactions. This imposition results in a myopic view of the unique issues, concerns, barriers, and achievements of individuals with LGBTQ+ …

© 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. To account for dynamic cross-coupling of structures via the soil, a computational model must be accurate enough to provide the correct overall behaviour of the scattered wave field. However, simplicity is also important when a model should be used for design purposes, especially in the early design stages and feasibility studies. The paper addresses the accuracy of simple models in which an array of structures is simplified into blocks placed on the ground surface or embedded within the soil. Comparisons are made between models that account or do not account, in a …

Explanation of Title and Show

After lists and lists of adjectives, verbs, and nouns that describe the ideas and pieces in my show, I finally realized: 1) That I want my title to be inviting. 2) It is okay to use the argument against mine to get people interested. What do I mean by these? One of the biggest (if not the biggest) arguments against inclusion and diversity of gender, sex, and sexual minorities in the United States, is based on interpretations of scriptures from various religions. It is the fear of the unknown and of change that also keeps …

An Introduction To The Lebesgue Integral, Ikhlas Adi Jan 2017

An Introduction To The Lebesgue Integral, Ikhlas Adi

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The Riemann integral is the simplest integral to define, and it allows one to integrate every continuous function. It is really important to have a definition of the integral that allows a wider class of functions to be integrated. However, there are many other types of integrals, the most important of which is the Lebesgue integral. The Lebesgue integral allows one to integrate unbounded or discontinuous functions whose Riemann integral does not exist, and it has mathematical properties that the Riemann integral does not. The definition of the Lebesgue integral requires the use of measure theory since picking out a …
