Women Approaching Death And Dying, Victoria Rue Jan 2017

Women Approaching Death And Dying, Victoria Rue

Faculty Publications, Social Sciences

My mother died in 2008 at the age of 84 surrounded by her eight children and our father. As I turn 68, I wonder about the length of my own life and about how I will face my own death. In a feminist body-affirming theology, how do I embrace fear and my body in the death and dying process? At the bedside of hospice patients, I saw the gap in Christian feminist theology between affirming the body and embracing its decay. From these narratives, I suggest that what is needed is a Christian feminist approach to death and dying focused on …

Relationship Of Religiosity And Spirituality To Hazardous Drinking, Drug Use, And Depression Among Sexual Minority Women, Laurie Drabble, Cindy Veldhuis, Barth Riley, Sharon Rostosky, Tonda Hughes Jan 2017

Relationship Of Religiosity And Spirituality To Hazardous Drinking, Drug Use, And Depression Among Sexual Minority Women, Laurie Drabble, Cindy Veldhuis, Barth Riley, Sharon Rostosky, Tonda Hughes

Faculty Publications

Using data from Wave 3 of the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women (CHLEW) study (N = 699), we explored whether religiosity and spirituality were associated with risk of hazardous drinking, drug use, and depression among sexual minority women (SMW; i.e., lesbian, bisexual) and possible differences by race/ethnicity. Participants were more likely to endorse spirituality than religiosity, and endorsement of each was highest among African American SMW. We found no protective effect of religiosity or spirituality for hazardous drinking or drug use. An association initially found between identifying as very spiritual and past-year depression disappeared when controlling for help-seeking. …

The Sluggs Survey: Revisiting The Correlation Between X-Ray Luminosity And Total Mass Of Massive Early-Type Galaxies, Duncan Forbes, Adebusola Alabi, Aaron Romanowsky, Dong-Woo Kim, Jean Brodie, Giuseppina Fabbiano

Faculty Publications

Here we utilize recent measures of galaxy total dynamical mass and X-ray gas luminosities (LX,Gas) for a sample of 29 massive early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey to probe LX, Gas–mass scaling relations. In particular, we investigate scalings with stellar mass, dynamical mass within 5 effective radii (Re) and total virial mass. We also compare these relations with predictions from Λ cold dark matter simulations. We find a strong linear relationship between LX, Gas and galaxy dynamical mass within 5Re, which is consistent with the recent cosmological simulations of Choi et al. that incorporate mechanical heating from AGN. We conclude …

Extensive Globular Cluster Systems Associated With Ultra Diffuse Galaxies In The Coma Cluster, Pieter Van Dokkum, Roberto Abraham, Aaron Romanowsky, Jean Brodie, Charlie Conroy, Shany Danieli, Deborah Lokhors, Allison Merritt, Lamiya Mowla, Jielai Zhang

Faculty Publications

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of two ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) with measured stellar velocity dispersions in the Coma cluster. The galaxies, Dragonfly 44 and DFX1, have effective radii of 4.7 kpc and 3.5 kpc and velocity dispersions of km s−1 and km s−1, respectively. Both galaxies are associated with a striking number of compact objects, tentatively identified as globular clusters: for Dragonfly 44 and for DFX1. The number of globular clusters is much higher than expected from the luminosities of the galaxies but is consistent with expectations from the empirical relation between dynamical mass and globular cluster …

Human-Centered Authentication Guidelines, Jeremiah Still, Ashley Cain, David Schuster Jan 2017

Human-Centered Authentication Guidelines, Jeremiah Still, Ashley Cain, David Schuster

Faculty Publications

PurposeDespite the widespread use of authentication schemes and the rapid emergence of novel authentication schemes, a general set of domain-specific guidelines has not yet been developed. This paper aims to present and explain a list of human-centered guidelines for developing usable authentication schemes.Design/methodology/approachThe guidelines stem from research findings within the fields of psychology, human–computer interaction and information/computer science.FindingsInstead of viewing users as the inevitable weak point in the authentication process, this study proposes that authentication interfaces be designed to take advantage of users’ natural abilities. This approach requires that one understands how interactions with authentication interfaces can be improved and …

Translanguaging: Definitions, Implications, And Further Needs In Burgeoning Inquiry, Luis E. Poza Jan 2017

Translanguaging: Definitions, Implications, And Further Needs In Burgeoning Inquiry, Luis E. Poza

Faculty Publications

The term translanguaging has appeared with growing frequency in research about the education of linguistic minority students. Amid increasing application of the term, concern emerges regarding the consistency of its definitions and characterizations, specifically with respect to the term’s social justice implications, which risk dilution. Early instances (García, 2007, 2009a) position the term as both a pedagogical strategy for supporting multilingual learners and a critique of existing conceptualizations of language and bilingualism that have historically marginalized particular speech communities. In this review of recent literature, I analyze 53 texts published between 1996 and 2014 for their definitions, exemplifications, and attributed …

Grammars And Rhetorics, Ian Cornelius Jan 2017

Grammars And Rhetorics, Ian Cornelius

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Grammar and rhetoric were the disciplines charged with teaching correct and effective use of language in antiquity. In the Middle Ages, these disciplines served to maintain Latin as a language of culture, religion, and administration over much of Europe. Grammatical studies flourished in medieval England following the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Subsequent developments in grammatical and rhetorical studies in Britain in the Middle Ages track deep changes in the social conditioning of literacy and social demands upon literacy. Among the medieval English innovations in these disciplines were the teaching of Latin as a foreign language, the cultural accommodation …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Enterococci concentration variability at Escambron Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico, was examined in the context of environmental conditions observed during 2005–2015. Satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST), turbidity, direct normal irradiance, and dew point were combined with local precipitation, winds, and mean sea level (MSL) observations in a stepwise multiple regression analyses (Akaike Information Criteria model selection). Precipitation, MSL, irradiance, SST, and turbidity explained 20% of the variation in observed enterococci concentrations based upon these analyses. Changes in these parameters preceded increases in enterococci concentrations by 24 h up to 11 days, particularly during positive anomalies of turbidity, SST, and 480–960 …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Given today's complex societal challenges, academia should work better with government, industry and others in offering innovative solutions that benefit our society, economy and environment. Researchers across disciplines must work together and with decision-makers to understand how science can have better on-The-ground impacts toward longer-Term, resilient societal outcomes. This includes, for example, by working with end-users in problem formation and throughout research projects to ensure decision-making needs are being met, and by linking physical science to additional fields like economics, risk communication or psychology. However, persistent barriers to collaborating across disciplines and with external decision-makers remain. Despite decades of studies …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Children’S Experiences Of Role-Play In Two Pack-Away Early Childhood Settings., Zenna Mary Kingdon Jan 2017

A Qualitative Exploration Of Children’S Experiences Of Role-Play In Two Pack-Away Early Childhood Settings., Zenna Mary Kingdon

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

In this thesis, I explored children’s experiences of role-play in relation to notions of self. The research took place in two pack-away settings in the Private, Voluntary and Independent (PVI) sector of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). The experiences of eight children, aged between three-year-three months and four-years one month, were investigated over a period of seven months. I used an adaptation of The Mosaic Approach (Clark and Moss 2001) combined with a reflective lenses approach (Brookfield 1995) to create a three-dimensional view of the children’s experiences. The children and I used a range of tools to gather data …

Underground Britain: Public Perceptions Of The Geological Subsurface, Hazel Laura Gibson Jan 2017

Underground Britain: Public Perceptions Of The Geological Subsurface, Hazel Laura Gibson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Geoscience operates at the boundary between two worlds; the visible and the invisible. Increasingly, new geological technologies such as hydraulic fracturing, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and radioactive waste disposal are drawing the public’s attention to the ‘invisible’ world of the geological subsurface. This presents unique communication challenges because these technologies exist in a realm that can never be physically seen. This thesis addresses this issue by examining the psychological perceptions of residents in three villages in the south west of England. A representative sample from each village was qualitatively interviewed and mental models were constructed from the resultant data …

Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Offshore Benin Basin, Sw Nigeria, Israel Aruoriwo Abiodun Etobro Jan 2017

Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Offshore Benin Basin, Sw Nigeria, Israel Aruoriwo Abiodun Etobro

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis presents an evaluation of the tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the offshore Benin Basin based on the analysis of 2D and 3D seismic data, in addition to exploration well data of four closely-spaced wells. To date, little has been published on this part of the African Equatorial Atlantic margin because of the lack of publicly available datasets, and this is the first academic study to be provided with 3D seismic data from this basin. The aims of the study were to establish a tectono-sequence stratigraphic framework for the basin, and to establish the timing, distribution, and nature of …

Social Resilience In Cornish Fishing Communities, Huw Thomas Jan 2017

Social Resilience In Cornish Fishing Communities, Huw Thomas

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Rural Cornish coastal fishing communities express, and have expressed, varying degrees of ability to develop and retain social resilience capacity, or the ability to withstand ‘shock’ over both ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ onset events in social, political, economic and natural domain terms (Wilson, 2012a). Endogenous and exogenous influences may include natural changes in resources and resource dependency resulting in the loss or depletion of community livelihoods associated with a decline in fishing activities (Brookfield, 2005; Marshall, 2007a), issues of tourism driven change and notions of ‘community’. Four capitals are initially conceptually considered, those of natural, political, social and economic capitals driving …

The Role Of Sound Recordings In The Revitalisation Of Minority Languages Of The Ainu People (Japan) And The West Frisians (The Netherlands), Malgorzata Fryzlewicz Jan 2017

The Role Of Sound Recordings In The Revitalisation Of Minority Languages Of The Ainu People (Japan) And The West Frisians (The Netherlands), Malgorzata Fryzlewicz

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis explores the use of sound recordings in the revitalisation of two minority languages – the Ainu (Japan) and the West Frisian (the Netherlands). Over the last few decades, a growing concern about linguistic diversity in the world has led to an increasing awareness of minority languages, which are endangered by loss. The concept of language revitalisation calls for work which will affect the vitality of these languages. The nature of these revitalisation efforts is inscribed into place-related processes and the interpretations of the relationships between language speakers and the place they live in. Sound recordings can afford language …

Testing The Late-Holocene Climate Signal From Ombrotrophic Bogs In Southernmost Chile And The Falkland Islands: A Multi-Proxy, Multi-Profile And Multi-Site Approach, Emma May Rice Jan 2017

Testing The Late-Holocene Climate Signal From Ombrotrophic Bogs In Southernmost Chile And The Falkland Islands: A Multi-Proxy, Multi-Profile And Multi-Site Approach, Emma May Rice

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Peatlands in Southern South America (SSA), in the path of the Southern Westerly Wind belt (SWW), offer the potential of reliable palaeoclimate archives. This investigation aimed to test the late-Holocene climate signal related to variability of the SWW. Three sites were investigated: San Juan and Karukinka bog, southernmost Chile and San Carlos, a Sphagnum dominated bog, discovered in the Falkland Islands, to form a regional comparison. A multi-proxy approach was used, combining both palaeoecological and stable isotopic methods. At one site, Karukinka, intra-site replicability was tested across three profiles located along a microtopographical gradient. A low number of statistically significant …

North Atlantic Deep Water Formation Inhibits High Arctic Contamination By Continental Perfluorooctane Sulfonate Discharges, Xianming Zhang, Yanxu Zhang, Clifton Dassuncao, Rainer Lohmann, Elsie M. Sunderland

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is an aliphatic fluorinated compound with eight carbon atoms that is extremely persistent in the environment and can adversely affect human and ecological health. The stability, low reactivity, and high water solubility of PFOS combined with the North American phase-out in production around the year 2000, make it a potentially useful new tracer for ocean circulation. Here we characterize processes affecting the lifetime and accumulation of PFOS in the North Atlantic Ocean and transport to sensitive Arctic regions by developing a 3-D simulation within the MITgcm. The model captures variability in measurements across biogeographical provinces (R2 …

An Intergenerational Perspective On Migrant Senses Of Identity And Belonging: The Case Of Greek-Cypriot Families In South West England, Uk, Gina Kallis Jan 2017

An Intergenerational Perspective On Migrant Senses Of Identity And Belonging: The Case Of Greek-Cypriot Families In South West England, Uk, Gina Kallis

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis takes an intergenerational perspective to investigate how senses of identity and belonging are constructed in a Greek-Cypriot community in the UK. This aim is particularly necessary given increasing rates of migration and mobility worldwide, which has resulted in growing acknowledgment across a number of disciplines of the need to explore the everyday lives of migrants and how ethnic identities are reconstituted across all generations. Despite this acknowledgment, research on the third-generation remains limited. This thesis addresses this gap by exploring how three generations of Greek-Cypriot migrants express feelings of identity and belonging and engage with translocal spaces. It …

Holocene Sea-Level Changes In The Falkland Islands: New Insights Into Accelerated Sea-Level Rise In The 20th Century, Thomas Lee Newton Jan 2017

Holocene Sea-Level Changes In The Falkland Islands: New Insights Into Accelerated Sea-Level Rise In The 20th Century, Thomas Lee Newton

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis investigates sea-level changes in order to test the hypothesis that the main contribution to early 20th century sea-level rise was Northern Hemisphere land-based ice melt. Multiproxy sea-level reconstructions were established for the Falkland Islands, a location where models suggest sea-level rise from Northern Hemisphere ice melt produces the largest signal. The Falklands reconstruction indicated sea levels in the early 20th century accelerated compared to the long-term rate, synchronous with accelerations observed globally. The magnitude of the acceleration in the Falklands reconstruction was greater than Northern Hemisphere rates, consistent with the spatial pattern from a Northern Hemisphere melt source, …

Copper And Zinc Speciation In The Tamar Estuary, Holly Beverley Clare Pearson Jan 2017

Copper And Zinc Speciation In The Tamar Estuary, Holly Beverley Clare Pearson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The chemical speciation of trace metals controls their potential bioavailability and therefore toxicity to exposed organisms. Despite previous studies demonstrating the ameliorative effects of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on metal toxicity, the effectiveness of ligands from varying sources and of potentially variable composition in controlling speciation has not been studied in detail in estuarine waters. In addition, the effect of DOC on radionuclide contaminants in combination with trace metals has not been investigated in any waters. This is of particular interest in the estuarine environment, where both anthropogenic and natural ligands, and contaminants that pose a potential threat to ecosystem …

Stratigraphic And Geochemical Expression Of Early Cretaceous Environmental Change In Arctic Svalbard, Madeleine Larissa Vickers Jan 2017

Stratigraphic And Geochemical Expression Of Early Cretaceous Environmental Change In Arctic Svalbard, Madeleine Larissa Vickers

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The Arctic is climatically sensitive to global change and therefore climate records from this region are of key importance. Little, however, is known of the state of the Arctic in the traditionally “greenhouse” period of the Cretaceous. Climate conditions are often assumed to have been warm-temperate as evidenced by the presence of conifers and dinosaur trackways on Svalbard and other Arctic localities. However, isotopic evidence for cooling episodes, sequence stratigraphic evidence for interpreted glacio-eustatic sea-level falls, and the presence of more enigmatic deposits such as dropstones and glendonites has led to a re-evaluation of the question of climatic dynamism during …
